Chapter Text
Flynn sat back in a chair at the long table in the Annex observing one of his favorite things: his Guardian. He was trying to figure out what was different about her. It was very subtle. A puzzle. He loved puzzles. He would figure it out.
“Let’s go,” Eve said to the Librarians, stretching her back as she stood, “it’s time.”
“I did it last week,” Jacob stated from where he was sitting reading a book on Egyptian architecture, “Ezekiel, it’s your turn.”
Cassandra clapped her hands excitedly at the idea of getting to watch but Ezekiel didn’t look very excited. “I want to watch!” She told them.
“I still don’t see why I need to do it,” argued Ezekiel, his hands on his hips.
Eve crossed her arms, “because you need to improve your skills.”
“Ah, but my skills are quite good,” he countered and pointed, “Cassandra can barely do it.”
Eve rubbed her forehead, “it doesn’t matter what Cass can or cannot do. It’s your turn to spar.”
All at once everything clicked for Flynn and the pieces fit.
“No!” Flynn shouted maybe a little louder than was necessary.
The rest of the Librarians and the Guardian turned to look at him, confused.
Flynn cleared his throat a little nervously not having meant to yell. “Um, sorry,” he stood, “maybe you just shouldn’t do that today.”
Eve narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously, “and why not?”
“Because you’re pregnant,” Flynn blurted, having solved his puzzle.
“Excuse me?” Eve countered.
Cassandra squeaked with happiness, doing a little bounce.
“What!?” Jacob asked.
Ezekiel’s mouth dropped, “she’s what?”
Flynn began his hyperobservant explanation moving around the table, “you’ve been more tired; you have had to pee more; your back has been sore; you have been having headaches; your sense of smell has increased because I definitely have never smelled Cal before; you were dizzy this morning; you are a little bloated,” this caused Eve to look down checking for herself before looking back at him, “you weren’t feeling too great the last few mornings and then you were fine the rest of the day; and your breasts are a little bigger,” he finished as he stood next to her.
Jenkins had entered the annex during Flynn’s explanation.
“Firstly,” Eve began, “never talk about my breasts around all of them,” she motioned to the 3 other Librarians and Jenkins, “again.”
Flynn nodded, “right. Right.”
“Second, how confident are you about this?”
“Can we go buy pregnancy tests?” Cassandra asked and started a side conversation with Jacob and Ezekiel about buying vs stealing the tests and if Jenkins could set a door to a store.
Flynn did his thinking face and calculated a few things. “Considering you’re also late I am pretty confident,” he nodded.
“I am not - what day is…” Eve looked around and then put her hands on Flynn’s shoulders. “Ever since the whole thing with Nicole, getting the library back, and tethering my internal calendar has been off.”
Flynn rested his hands on her hips, nodding, “it was a bit of an internal clock reset.”
“I should also be surprised you can track my cycle and yet I’m not,” Eve smiled.
“Well,” Flynn grinned, before kissing her softly.
“So do we need to go steal pregnancy tests or not,” Ezekiel asked, ready to go at that moment.
“We will buy them!” Cassandra corrected.
“Kids!” Eve warned, looking over her shoulder.
“If I may,” Jenkins interjected, raising a finger.
Eve and Flynn turned to look at him, an arm around the other.
Jenkins continued “have you heard about the Rabbit Test in regards to a pregnancy?”
The group looked at one another.
“Um, doesn’t that have to do with the discovery of human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG?” Cassandra asked, before continuing, “to determine the presence of hCG scientists injected a sample of the woman’s urine into an immature female mouse, frog, or rabbit. If hCG was present the animal would go into heat.”
Jenkins nodded, “yes but prior to that was an actual rabbit that diagnosed pregnancies. How do you think they got the idea?”
“As in…” Jacob said, “an artifact?”
Flynn laughed, “the Library has a pregnancy detecting artifact?”
“You mean besides you?” Eve replied.
“Let’s go find the rabbit!” Cassandra cheered.
The Librarians and The Guardian followed Jenkins to the Animals Wing.
“Didn’t you say Schrodinger’s Cat is here?” Ezekiel asked as they passed books and other artifacts.
“He is and he isn’t,” replied Jenkins plainly.
“What?” Ezekiel was confused.
The group paused for a moment.
“It’s a thought experiment,” Flynn explained. “Erwin Schrödinger put his cat in a box with some radioactive substance. Until the observer opens the box and sees the cat, the cat is both dead and alive.”
“Yes, however it worked too well and Mr. Schrödinger created a cat who could impose that experiment upon everyone around him,” stated Jenkins, “The cat ended up creating doubles of people around him who were both dead and alive.”
“Can we be around the cat?” Eve asked.
Jenkins nodded, “his enclosure is fortified and it is very safe. The rabbit is just down here.”
The group passed the cat, Pavlov’s Dog, a crocodile, Three Blind Mice, and a toad before getting to the rabbit.
Jenkins stopped on one side of the rabbit’s ’display’ with the Librarians and Eve on the other. “Here we are.”
“How does it work?” Jacob asked.
“You just ask me,” the rabbit told them, thumping one of her back feet.
Jenkins gestured to the rabbit, “Precisely.”
“It talks?!” Exclaimed Jacob.
“Woah!” Laughed Ezekiel
Cassandra leaned closer, her hands in fists under her chin, “that is amazing.”
“Still one of the least surprising things about today,” Eve said, more to Flynn.
The rabbit, appearing rather bored at the situation - but rabbits rarely seem excited about things - asked “who would like a diagnosis?”
“We would,” Flynn answered, stepping forward with Eve.
“Librarian, unless things have changed,” the rabbit said, “I do not believe it would be possible -“
“Oh no, no,” Flynn laughed.
Eve shook her head at him, “he meant me.”
“Humans are odd,” the rabbit’s nose twitched, “Guardian, you are indeed pregnant. Please leave before celebrating. Humans are loud.”
The group, respectful of the rabbit, left the Animal Wing before dissolving into a loud, babbling group hug.
“I’m so excited!” They heard from Cassandra
“Just think of what I can teach the kid,” was from Ezekiel.
“This is going to be the smartest kid,” Jacob said.
They could have sworn Jenkins said something about it being prophesied. But it’s possible he mentioned baby sized - Eve and Flynn weren’t able to hear him clearly over the other three.
