Chapter Text
December.
Hannuka, Kwanza, Christmas, New years,
And snow. Lots of snow.
For the toons at gardenview, the cold wasn't a problem. The furnace was on at all times during the winter, even during off-days.
Until a cold front came through and pushed strong snowstorms over the city. The system responsible gave little time to prepare for the incoming storms.
Pretty quickly, the blackouts at Gardenview were happening more frequently. Increased demand and downed power lines were to blame. Without power going to the furnace, it got frigid. This left Gardenview FREEZING and dark for most of the time.
Unfortunately, Ginger was caught in a blackout while she was baking. She was peacefully mixing a batch of royal icing when the fluorescent lights started to flicker in waves. Ginger quickly her flashlight out before power went out completely.
"..well that's just..great" Ginger said to herself, fumbling with her flashlight before turning it on, showing the countertop in front of her.
"Don't think I could've said it better myself!" a second voice giggled.
Ginger jumped from the unexpected voice while turning her flashlight to see the speaker. She was met with a red ornament with a mint green down winter coat.
"Ah, it's just you Bobbette..." Ginger sighed in relief.
"Great to know you can still recognize me! I used my flashlight batteries for something at the shop, so uh.. I'm kinda lost right now," Bobbette turned her head nervously and laughed, trying to make the best of their predicament.
Ginger giggled with Bobbete. Everytoon had been forced to carry around flashlights and wear heavy coats. Most toons, specifically ones who didn't give off their own light, looked similar.
Bobbette sighed and looked back to Ginger's fuzzy outline.
"So.. you wanna come back to my room? I have hot chocolate powder and extra blankets. Plus... I have to.. uh.. check on coal? Maybe about the coal thing since sometimes she's there but.." Bobbette continued on her coal tangent, not noticing Ginger trying to conceal her amusement.
"hehe.. sure, I'll come over" Ginger said while giggling over Bobette's rambling.
"Oh! Well.. c'mon then!" Bobbette said playfully as she started to follow Ginger. Ginger couldn't walk as fast as Bobbette, but the ornament adopted a slower pace, putting her and Ginger next to each other.
"Ok so I was thinking that first, I could make some hot chocolate for us. Well technically first I gotta.." bobbette started rambling again. Ginger just smiled and nodded, she loved seeing bobbette so happy and entertained. A stark contrast to recent weeks.
Usually, topics run dry in September. Those weeks were always the worst. The holiday toons had nothing to talk about and nothing to hope for at that time. Most of them just sat around, drawing pictures in the dust.
"But anyway thats just- OH! were here!" Bobbette paused to grab her key and unlock the door. Stepping into the room, she turned around and held the door open while bowing to Ginger like a doorman. "after you, ma'am," Bobette said in a serious tone.
Ginger giggled, "Why thank you..!" she said in a mock posh tone while stepping into the room. (haha.. mock posh... sounds like modge podge) (killyourself past me/j)
Ginger couldn't fully make out Bobette's room, but it looked very.. homey. Posters were taped on the walls, currently illegible in the dark. In one corner, Bobette's bed with a knitted quilt decorated with holly plants on it. In the opposing corner, a plush couch on a plain circle carper under the couch. In another corner, a kitchenette was covered in various treats. Cocoa powder, bows, pens, even some of Ginger's cookies. Bobette grabbed Ginger's hand, leading her to the soft couch in the corner of the room.
------------------
"Wait here! I'll boil some water for you," Bobbette let go of Ginger and moved to her kitchenette to fill her battery-powered kettle. Ginger just stayed sitting on the couch, messing with the faux fur of her creme-colored parka.
The dripping faucet spurred to life as Bobette filled the kettle. She then turned the tap off. Making sure the faucet was still trickling, Bobette set the kettle down on the counter.
"Allrighty!!" bobbette announced, elongating the L. "Looks like we're set! Hot cocoa coming your way in err.. 10 minutes!"
Bobette walked back over to the couch. Ginger still hadn't moved yet, mostly because she didn't want to mess up Bobbette's room by knocking something down.
"Honestly, I don't think the snow's that bad! I know, I know, I sound insane but think about it! Most of these toons haven't experienced real snow and it's the perfect opportunity," Bobette once again, rambled on and on. Ginger didn't mind it though, enjoying the other girls' voices and personality and looks and.. everything Bobbette was.
Ginger decided to lay down on Bobette's lap, something that the two toons often do. The cookie's loving eyes encourage the other girl to contuine her ranting.
They stay like this for a while, enjoying the other's company. Eventually, the lights flicker back on. Showing the neglected kettle, not even turned on in the first place.
But the hot chocolate wasn’t important anymore. At least not to Ginger or Bobette, still comfortably situated with Ginger's head in Bobette's lap.
