Things I wish I knew before entering college by Wynn Rainier
- Kung magd-dorm dapat matutong mag-luto
- Humanap ng dorm na malapit sa mga karinderya
- Never trust the quick bread breakfast if may 7:00 am class ka
- Free Soups at karinderya will be your hero.
With many more to add, kung bibigyan pa siya ng side quest ni papa God to learn things the hard way.
It’s Wynn’s sophomore year, kabilang siya sa hanay ng mga ekonomista, specifically BS economics.
For Wynn , Bull Shit Economics
His love-hate relationship toward his program with full of egoistic, major in kupal, and draining colleagues.
Pursuing such a degree at a State University was something else. Only the desperate and mighty men would take the risk, and Wynn's being both was even crazier. To the point na naging inner mantra na niya ang “ my pussy has taken me places I wouldn't go with a gun. ”
Limited facilities?
Super lawak na university na kailangan mong baybayin for two days dahil makiki room lang kayo sa ibang department?
No class cancellation despite 40 degree heat index to the point natutunaw na ang mga wires sa campus?
You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum that raised him.
Totoong totoo ang kasabihan na kaluluwa ang tuition fee sa mga State University. And for Wynn, he was fucking game— sign me the fuck up just to get that degree. #GagantiAngApi
Yet aside from the things that he despises, there are also some things that made him stay and make the most out of his college life.
Which, for him, was far greater than those things mentioned above.
First on the list would be his two dearest friends, Kwan and Yohan. His ride or die, lifeline— taga tolerate ng desisyon ng isa’t isa. Call them Power Puff Gays , the way they are filled with sugar, spice, and everything nice, but Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction– Chemical X, and made them baklang kanal.
“Alam niyo na ha, pag nag shift kayo mag shift din ako” Wynn uttered with the most serious face and tone.
“Alam mo talaga sa kaka-ganyan mo ako na lalayo, na para talagang siyang velcro baby” Kwan annoyingly replied.
“Wag mo kasi manifest, marinig ka ni Rudy Baldwin niyan gaga ka.” Pahabol ni Yohan, which made two of his friends laugh while waiting for their grades to be uploaded to the University’s portal.
Second will be his dorm and the stray animals around campus. The dorm, or he calls it his ‘minihome’ na awa ng diyos, he was also blessed with very kind and cooperative roommates, they even have general cleaning schedules dahil pare-parehas silang clean freak . The stray animals, aka the campus children— dahil kahit gaano man ka kupal ang campus nila , they never play with their stray animals, talagang alaga, stress free, stress reliever ng mga tao sa campus.
“Hnnnnnnngmm, napaka bochog!” Wynn said while containing his cuteness aggression. Hirap na pag nangigil at makagat mo sila huhu.
Lastly, or the thing he loves the most— the variety of foods. Dahil bilang diyosa na hindi biniyayaan ng talent portion sa pagluluto, the karideryas here are the most remarkable blessing from the universe. Hindi naman pwedeng puro delata at jollibee siya sa buong colllege life niya, awa na lang. The universe heard his prayers and literally said “Oh, eto mag-sawa ka” with the various option from point a to point z. Madaming food options dito sa lugar na kinatatayuan ng university niya, from fast food, street foods, and karinderya.
But his heart will always go to karinderya and their dear beloved precious free soup that goes through every meal.
Para sa kaniya na unlock na niya ang cheat code of being a broke college student by spending his money on meals that come with free soups.
And Wynn and his love for sabaw have brought him to the love of his life.

Tuesday in the afternoon, three dyosas were walking under the scorching sun. Over naman sa scorching sun na parang sila na talaga yung El Niño final boss — but kidding aside, it was hot af, sino ba namang sane person ang iikutin ang buong campus just to find the eatery they have been yapping since yesterday.
“Ba’t kasi kulang kulang yung post ni kuya” Yohan annoyingly uttered
“Sinisi mo pa talaga siya, Bobbie Salazar pasok!” Wynn replied
“Ba’t parang kasalanan ko pa?” Sambit ni Kwan habang ginagaya ang iconic gesture ni Bea Alonzo as Bobbie Salazar.
“Maaaaaah, I’m sorry” Yohan replied, mimicking Teddie Salzar’s voice.
“Eh, kung nag trese kusineros na lang tayo” Yohan added
“Ito naman akala mo talaga araw araw nilalakad buong campus eh” says Wynn
“Ay, hindi ba?” Kwan replied, which made his two friends laugh, totoo naman kasi.
After a few moments of walking, they finally reached their destination. For them, it was all worth it— hindi masiyadong maraming tao dahil hindi naman common vacant hour ang ala una ng tanghali, the ambiance was great— alam mo yung tipong subok na yung karinderya dahil sa interior, last and definitely not the least, the food choice; varying from vegetables, fish, beef, pork, and even chicken dishes, this karinderya is definitely something.
Just squint your eyes and the eatery gives off “if ever ‘ningnangan’ and ‘balay dako’ had a child”.
“Honey-glazed chicken akin.” Wynn already called dibs.
In their circle, ganiyan talaga. Your ulam is my ulam, and my ulam is your ulam— so avoid duplication dahil matitikman mo rin naman.
“Parang masarap orange chicken eh” Yohan added
“Iba na, puro manok te?” Wynn replied.
“Okay. Uhm, bicol express na lang sa akin” says Yohan
“Beef broccoli akin” Kwan added.
“Okay. Ako na mag order hanap na kayo upuan mga te, ano lahat tayo andito ganon?” Yohan jokingly said while listing down his friend’s meal.
“Magkano po isang meal, nay?”
“75 pesos with rice, toy”

“Thank you for the food!” Kwan joyfully uttered in front of their meals.
“Ay, sabaw te, meron ba?” Wynn questioned.
Siya pa ba? Never ever ever in his life makakalimutan ang existence ng free soups sa karinderya. Be it sinigang, bulalo, nilaga, tinola, papatusin niya yan. God forbid your Dyosa is a certified broth enthusiast, he even dedicates his whole fyp to #souptok.
“Ay oo nga pala, hingi ka na lang” Yohan replied
“Ako rin Wynn, Thankyou!” Kwan added.
Wynn walked toward the counter of the eatery, pero shet— no one dared to tell him na hindi lang ulam ang masarap today.
Across from him was this tall and moreno guy wearing a dark blue shirt with their campus ID lace. Helping his mother accommodate their customers with his rolled-up t-shirt sleeves, making his strong and big arms visible.
Hindi naniniwala si Wynn sa love at first sight pero shet, now it all make sense. Whoever came up with it must be onto something— cause damn, how do you explain to them the world pause, slow jazz music, and a wind that looks like a paid actor.
If only all of you could see the look on his face right now. Hindi pa siya kumakain ng proper meal for 8 hours pero parang busog na busog na ang kaniyang heart, soul, and eyes with the view he’s seeing right now.
“Uhm. Sa inyo po?’’ Miggy spoke, making Wynn snap out of his daydreaming agenda.
“Uh, makikihingi po sana ng sabaw” says Wynn
“Kinghinaaaaah ang pogi naman ng boses nito nakaka hiya mang-hingi ng FREE soup”
“Ay. Actually, ubos na po I’m sorry” Miggy apologetically replied.
Oh.
“I think you just broke my kasing kasing” Wynn thinks to himself trying to grasp what the latter had just said.
“Ay, okay, thanks.” Wynn replied flatly. He walked back to their spot with no soup on hand and a blank expression.
Ika nga ni baron “NASAAN ANG SABAW!!!”
“Nyare sa’yo teh?” Sambit ni Yohann
“Wala daw sabaw, ubos na” Tipid na sambit ni Wynn
“Ay sayang, paano ka niyan” dagdag ni Kwan
“Okay lang tangek, kala mo talaga hindi mabubuhay nang walang sabaw eh” Pabirong sambit ni Wynn.
Then the three of them enjoyed their meal.
But deep down, Wynn thought that the meal would be so much better if there were hot and free soup besides his meal.
“Ano ‘to, ito na lang? Walang aftercare?” Wynn thinks to himself. Dahil aanhin ang masarap na whole course meal chukchakan kung walang aftercare, AFTERCAREEEE??!
Wynn felt his 75 peso slip from his wallet just like that. “Aanhin ang pag ibig na wagas kung wala namang isasabaw sa meal kong budgeted hanggang kinsenas.”
Nevertheless, he enjoyed his meal still. He enjoyed his honey-glazed chicken with matching sarsa ng bicol express ni Yohan, wow remix.
Isama na rin yung kaniyang limang minutong pag-ibig, "see you when I see you. "

Wynn's soup deprivation made him cook lucky me chicken for his dinner tonight. With his papers on the side. Though wala naman silang pasok kinabukasan, kailangan niya pa ring pumunta sa campus because of his extracurricular activities.
11:00 pm, when he was just in the midst of doomscrolling on Facebook and TikTok, trying to make himself sleep.

7:00 freaking AM, what a great way to start your morning. Wynn doesn’t know what to feel.
50% embarrassment and 50% kilig, cause what the heck was that, feeling niya tuloy lalagnatin siya because of too much emotion rambling inside him. However, isolating himself was not an option, especially today when he has so much on his plate right now.
11:00 pm, and just like that, his errands were done. His Professors asked him to join lunch and sino ba naman siya para tumanggi.
“Nak, sabay ka na samin ni sir, mukhang di ka pa nag aalmusal” Nanay Ma’am Fel asked him.
Teacher’s pet allegations aside, he’s not like that— the lunch was just a simple act of kindness. Ikaw ba naman, asikasuhin mo ang list of graduatees this year, deserve mo naman ng free lunch.
His professors led the way kung saan sila kakain, tila may bago raw silang kabag na new eatery and they have to try.
Sounds familiar. The directions are familiar.
Shit.
“Don’t tell me sa Kim eatery kami what the freaaaaak!” Wynn says to himself, trying to find a way kung paano mag excuse sa kanyang mga professors na he’s not able to join them for lunch.
But it was too late, tama ang hula niya na dito ulit siya kakain ng lunch. Do you get Deja Vu, huh?
Unlike yesterday, the eatery was packed with students and professors today. But despite the large amount of people, hindi naman siksikan— may shortage lang sa upuan.
“Anak, okay lang ba sa two seaters kami ni Sir Kevin, and dun ka sa tapat namin na two seater din? Para makakain na rin tayo, wala naman ng group sized seats eh” says Ma’am Fel.
“Ay, okay lang po, Ma’am” Wynn agreed, like may magagawa pa ba siya?
It’s actually a big favor for him, not only did he not want to join his two professors’ business, he also wants to be alone today making himself reflect with the actions he did yesterday, shit nakaka hiya— thankyou na lang papa God kasi wala si Mr. Handsome today.
Or so he thought.
While Wynn was occupied with eating his lunch, a not-so-familiar voice caught his attention.
“One buko pie and soup for Wynn Rainier Jeon" Sambit ni Miggy habang hawak ang tray na may lamang isang meal, dalawang buko pie, and a bowl of soup.
Napa lingon na lamang si Wynn and was chocked by his own food.
Miggy put his tray down and reached for a glass of water to prevent Wynn from choking completely. Making their hands touch each other.
There was a spark.
Imagine you are on the verge of your own death pero nauna pang mag react yung katawan mo sa kilig, sakses or unsaksesn’t?
After the successful unchoke wynn agenda, Miggy broke the tension by saying
“Uh, anyway, pwede bang dito na rin ako umupo? Wala na kasing seats, jampacked kami today hehe”
“Oo naman, haha, of course” Wynn replied flatly
“Para namang hindi niyo toh eatery” Wynn thinks to himself.
Few minutes on the same table, Miggy broke the silence.
“We haven’t introduced each other properly” Miggy says
“I am Miggy Kim. MedTech. Ikaw?” pahabol ng binata
“Wynn Jeon De Jesus, from the Economics department” Wynn replied
“Uhm, what year ka na?” Wynn added, para naman hindi awkward
“Sophomore year, eh ikaw?”
“Same, ohmygod”
This is it, Wynn. Now or never.
“ Uhm, about pala sa kahapon— I’m sorry talaga, favorite ko kasi mga soups sa karinderya, and I thought it would be posted anonymously, hhuhuhuhu— Nonetheless, I enjoyed every bite of the meal, please don’t take my comment yesterday the wrong way.” Wynn uttered while his head lowered down, trying to hide from embarrassment.
“Eh yung pogi daw ako, was that true?” Miggy replied with his face resting on his arms, bringing his face closer to the latter.
“Huh. Tangina andami kong sinabi wala manlang dun sa nasabi yung nireply niya.” Wynn thinks to himself
“Tsaka pwede ba paki layo ng gwapong mukha at malalaking braso, baka ma kiss ko ya—”
“Huh.” Wynn confusingly replied.
Miggy could only respond with a teasing chuckle.

“Just kidding. Kalma Wynn, it’s okay”
“Wag mo nang masyadong isipin yun, Si nanay talaga yung naka basa ng comment at tuwang tuwa siya, thankyou for cracking such joke, it made her day” Miggy added.
“So.. Apology accepted?” Wynn confusingly asked.
“Wala ka namang dapat iapologize in the first place, but thank you for the kind gesture” Miggy replied with a matching wink, making Wynn blink rapidly, trying to process what the heck is happening right now.

“So, let us eat our meal, and after that, let’s get to know each other.” Sambit ng Miggy, reassuring Wynn that everything is fine.

After their lunch, dumiretso na si Wynn sa kanyang dorm.

Their lunch actually went smoothly, with an hour of talking and getting to know each other, mabilis na humupa ang awkwardness between the two, to the point na nauna nang umalis ang mga prof niya sa eatery.
The personalities, the humor, the political standing? Check na check, tila ba they were destined to meet each other.
Sa loob ng ilang oras nalaman niya na rin ang lore ng karinderya. The family business of the Kim’s na naipundar ng tatay niyang air force army. The karinderya was standing for almost 11 years, with two branches— sa labas ng campus at sa mismong campus. He also learned that bunso si Miggy sa kanilang tatlong magkakapatid.
Also, isa palang DOST scholar si Miggy, “what the heck?! pogi na smart pa? sign me the fuck up”

Ayan, love team na sila.
Several dates, yes, dates, plural— after several dates, mapa inside the campus, outside, karinderya, mall, or kahit saan, as long as they have each other. Who would've thought that a mere bowl of soup would start the most genuine love of all. Mahaba haba pa ang tatakbuhin at iikutin ng relationship nila but it’s okay, all is well as long as they have each other.
