Chapter Text
“I win again. As always.” Sonic cheered in a tone that slightly annoyed Shadow.
“I let you win, don’t get too cocky.” Shadow grumbled.
“Whatever you say, Shads.” Sonic retorted back.
“And I’ve already told you, stop calling me that.” Shadow said, folding his arms as he glared at the blue hedgehog.
“Well, that was fun. Wanna head back to my place? Tails is making chilli dogs tonight.” Sonic said happily.
“Why would I want to go into that mess of a house and eat those disgusting things you call food?” Shadow answered.
Sonic however, ignoring Shadows answer, grabbed him by the wrist and started happily dragging him towards his house.
“Tails I’m back!” Sonic yelled as he closed the front door behind him.
“Hmp.” Shadow grumbled as Sonic continued to drag Shadow into the kitchen.
When Tails turned and saw Shadow he jumped a little, not expecting Shadow's presence.
“What’s he doing here?” Tails asked, caught off guard.
“I just thought he might enjoy eating some chilli dogs with us. Everyone loves chilli dogs.” Sonic replied, smiling.
“Well I don’t. I already told you that. And you can let go of me now.” Shadow said to Sonic in an annoyed tone.
“Oh yea, sorry.” Sonic shrugged letting go of Shadows wrist, to which Shadow instantly went back to folding his arms.
“Well, the chilli dogs are done now.” Tails said, setting them down on the table.
Tails tried to sit as far away from Shadow as possible. Shadow noticed this and made a threatening face at Tails, making Tails look away, slightly threatened.
“Great!” Sonic cheered, grabbing chilli dogs instantly as Tails set them on the table.
It didn’t take long before Sonic started shoving numerous chilli dogs in his mouth.
“Thdse chiwli dugs awre so goud Tawls.” Sonic said as he shoved chilli dog after chilli dog into his mouth.
“Don’t talk with your mouth full,” Shadow said, annoyed, “It’s disgusting.”
“Sorry.” Sonic shrugged, not really meaning it.
After sitting for quite a few minutes in silence a loud sound came from outside, making everyone jump. Shadow glared at Sonic who had clung onto him upon being startled. After Sonic saw Shadow glare at him he quickly let go of Shadow awkwardly.
“There must be a storm starting.” Tails suggested, then pulling out some kind of gadget from his utility belt, “If my calculations are right, which they of course always are, there should be a thunderstorm tonight, the high being 25 degrees outside. It’s expected to end at 5am tomorrow.” Tails said all matter of factly.
Tails took pride in how smart he was, he was only eight years old, however, he was a lot smarter than most adults were.
“Ugh.” Shadow grumbled knowing exactly what Sonic was about to suggest.
“I guess you’ll have to stay with us, Shads.” Sonic said in a rather perky tone.
“Stop calling me that. How many times do I have to tell you?” Shadow said in an annoyed tone, glaring at Sonic.
After Sonic and Tails finished eating thousands of chilli dogs like the biggies they are, Tails got up and went back to his room, which was actually originally two rooms. Upon moving into their house Sonic had broken a wall down so that Tails could have a giant room, making it to where he could invent things from his own bedroom.
Even after Tails left Sonic continued to consume chilli dogs like it was nothing, only stopping when he noticed Shadow giving him a disgusted look.
“I don’t know about you, but I am exhausted.” Sonic said to Shadow after finishing the last of the chilli dogs. “Come on.” Sonic said, grabbing Shadow by the wrist yet again.
Shadow just grumbled and let Sonic drag him through the house. Shadow didn’t know why he didn’t smack Sonic’s hand off of him, in all honesty, he didn’t care that Sonic had been dragging him around all day. He wanted to be annoyed by it, but he just somehow couldn’t. He couldn’t be annoyed by that stupid smile on the blue hedgehog's face, no matter how hard he tried to look annoyed.
“You can sleep on my bed.” Sonic said as they entered his room, “My bed is pretty big so I’m sure it won’t be a problem.”
“Ugh. Why would I want to sleep in the same bed as you?” Shadow glared at Sonic.
“It’s gonna be really cold tonight. But I guess I can sleep on the floor.” Sonic said, sounding slightly annoyed. Sonic quickly threw two blankets and a pillow on his floor, he put one blanket under him so that he wouldn’t have to lay on the hard floor.
Sonic then turned the lights off and stumbled around in the dark, trying to adjust to the new lighting.
After only a few moments Sonic tripped over a pile of clothes that he had been putting off taking care of for weeks
“Woooahhh!” Sonic said, tripping.
“Ugh. Maybe you wouldn’t trip if you kept your room clean.” Shadow said, annoyed by Sonic’s stupidity.
“I didn't know you cared about me so much.” Sonic teased, finally finding his way and laying down on the floor.
“Haha, so funny.” Shadow mocked him.
The next 30 minutes were silent. The only noise being the rain and thunder going on outside. Both hedgehogs laid, trying to sleep, however, the cold kept them awake.
Sonic shivered, being less warm because of him laying on the floor, the blanket he had wasn’t thick enough to keep him warm. Shadow also was cold, however not shivering like Sonic, he had a much thicker blanket and naturally didn’t feel as cold as the other hedgehog did.
After many moments of shivering in the cold Sonic pondered which would be worse; spending all night shivering, or risking trying to sleep on his bed where Shadow was. After pondering for a long 15 minutes he decided that he couldn’t take the cold anymore.
He quietly sat up and made his way over to where his bed was. He then got on his bed and quickly pulled the blanket over himself, instantly feeling slightly warmer.
“What exactly do you think you're doing?”
Shadow's voice made Sonic jump a little, “It’s too cold to sleep on the floor, I was practically freezing to death.” Sonic complained, to which Shadow only rolled his eyes at him, shaking his head.
After many awkward silent moments with nothing but the storm in the background, Sonic was still really cold. Sonic quickly, before he had time to rethink his decision, turned over and wrapped his arms around Shadow. Sonic felt Shadow tense up upon him doing this, however he felt a lot warmer than he had before.
“Sonic.” Shadow said in a slightly annoyed tone, although he could feel his face starting to get hot.
“You can’t tell me you weren’t also freezing.” Sonic replied, Shadow gave no response. “It’s a lot warmer this way. Just deal with it. And if you really want I won’t tell anyone about this.” Sonic told Shadow.
After a few minutes Sonic felt Shadow slightly start to relax under his grip. Sonic was glad that Shadow hadn’t thrown him onto the floor. It was cold. Sonic told himself that that’s why they both tolerated this. The only reason of course.
Shadow wanted to hate this. He wanted to yell at Sonic to lay back onto the floor, but it was cold. That’s what he told himself. That was the reason he let this go on. Not because he found Sonic’s grip on him to be slightly comforting. Definitely not.
Though deep down he knew that that was the real reason. He knew that he didn’t want this to end, that he was glad Sonic had dragged him to his house and that he had laid on the bed next to him.
There was something comforting about laying there with Sonic’s arms wrapped around him. He felt almost as if nothing would ever go wrong again, he hoped that this was true, wishing that this night would last a little longer.
After a few minutes he heard quiet snoring next to him, which he guessed meant that Sonic had finally fallen asleep. Shadow still felt quite cold, especially since he was near the window.
Shadow, knowing that Sonic couldn’t call him out or say anything because he was asleep, turned over, now facing Sonic.
Something about seeing Sonic laying there asleep next to him gave him great comfort. He still looked like the same overly cocky, annoying hedgehog. But he looked peaceful, and something about that brought Shadow peace. He didn’t know what it was, but something about this stupid blue hedgehog made his face get hot and his heart race. He knew what it was, but he couldn’t admit to it. He’d tell himself it was just the hatred he felt towards Sonic. But deep down he knew it was something else.
After squeezing himself closer to Sonic and allowing himself to be held by him, Shadow finally felt warm enough to trail off to sleep.
He never would have thought he would be where he was right now. However, laying there, in Sonic’s arms, Shadow wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
