Chapter Text
Subaru's Biography:
Subaru is a 56-year-old witcher. He was born in 1216.
By 1272, he was four years younger than Geralt, but didn't know him personally. Although he was friends with Eskel, whom he considered a brother, Eskel didn't mind and treated Subaru similarly.
He also knew Lambert and enjoyed teasing and bickering with him. Lambert himself never said so, but he liked Subaru.
In 1226, at the age of 10, he was taken to the Griffin School by witchers.
Why was this? He doesn't like to talk about it, but whenever the question comes up, he always answers the same thing.
"Subaru": It doesn't matter.
After the herbal experiment, he, like Geralt, underwent additional mutations: half of his long hair lost its black color, the top half became ash-white, and the bottom half remained black.
He also prefers to keep himself clean; his fellow witchers often remarked on Subaru's excessive cleanliness, to which he responded.
"Subaru": I hate smelling like a corpse from the Oxenfurt sewers.
He seems to have some sort of tic about cleanliness, or even an injury, although this doesn't stop him from continuing to bury himself in filth for yet another corpse-eater or swamp woman. Apparently, his thirst for money is stronger than his disgust.
Furthermore, the irises of his eyes have become completely black, making it appear as if he has no pupils, unless you look very closely—his pupils are vertical, like all witchers. These eyes made his sinister gaze even more intimidating, making it difficult for him to find work. He was also the last of the four children to survive the medallion ordeal, leaving him psychologically scarred and having difficulty communicating with strangers. That was until he met Eskel.
Subaru was also gifted with magic; he could draw incredible amounts of chaos energy from the atmosphere, allowing his signs to take on a full-fledged form of sorcery. He could also blend all the verses, imbuing his signs with additional properties.
His swordsmanship was also excellent; not as good as Geralt's, but better than most witchers.
In the world of Re:zero, in pure swordsmanship without the use of magic, including the "flow" method, only members of the Astrea family, with the exception of Heinkel, could defeat him in swordsmanship. He's fairly mediocre in alchemy and hasn't shown much interest in it. He knows all the basic oils and a couple of elixirs: Swallow, Petri Potion, Neasit, and Raffar The White.
After turning 20, he was sent to Bolshak, where he began practicing his craft, which he hated with all his heart. Almost a year later, he returned to the school, but found only destruction.
According to my theory, the Griffin School was destroyed in the 13th century, not the 12th, that is, in 1237.
Although Subaru is 56 years old, he looks 23. Thanks to mutations and good genes, he retains his youth, unlike other witchers, but his gaze and the bags under his eyes betray his age, especially to those who pay close attention. His body is also adorned with numerous scars, but three of them speak of his experience and strength. The first is a triple claw scar directly on his chest, running from left to right. It was received from a royal griffin, whose belly Subaru subsequently ripped open.
The second is a burn on his back from a noonwraith, which no one could remove for decades, causing him to grow ever stronger.
The third scar is on his cheek, below his right eye, horizontally. He received it from Leo Bonnart, who tried to kill Subaru but, of course, failed. If not for Bonnart's tricks, Subaru would have been able to kill him, but the kill would have come at a high price, so he decided to retreat.
Subaru was a withdrawn person, without goals or desires, and this made life difficult for him.
But everything changed when he met Eskel, arguably the wisest person he had ever met.
Thanks to Eskel, over time, he became more open and self-confident, and most importantly, he wanted to find a purpose, but what exactly he didn't yet know.
After some time, they began to call each other brothers. His personality also changed after meeting Eskel and meeting Lambert: he began to make very sarcastic jokes, sometimes even more caustic than Ram's.
He began to appreciate what life gives him and treat people better.
As a witcher of the Griffin school, he understands chivalry, honor, duty, and bravery, although until recently he had categorically preferred to ignore these concepts.
His equipment includes a magnificent set of Griffin armor and swords, but he does not use a crossbow, considering it unnecessary due to his superior magical abilities.
