Work Text:

"Hey, Eda, can I tell you something?"

"Eww, why are you saying it like that? You're not gonna get all sappy on me, are you?"

Eda's bright ginger hair bounced as she tilted her head. Raine had a serious look on their face.

It had only been a few months since Raine transferred to Hexside, and Eda had never seen this stern of a look coming from them before.

"What's wrong?" Eda's tone shifted.

"I know it's not a big deal, but..." Raine nervously rubbed the skin on their arm. "I just don't know who else to talk to about it."

"Talk to about what?" Eda spoke as softly as she could muster.

"I know that I'm naturally a pretty androgynous person, and I'm grateful for that, but... the older I get, the harder it is to forget about the body I was born in. It's really hard to handle sometimes. And bard magic can only get you so far."

Eda had never thought about it before. Raine had never been gendered in her eyes, at all. But of course that would feel different to them.

"What do you mean...?" Eda asked, unsure of how to respond, though she wanted them to continue.

"There's a disconnect," they began, "Between how I am perceived and what is actually me . My voice is too high. I hide my chest every day and it's really uncomfortable. I wish I could change it." Raine giggled pitifully. "Sometimes I wish I had joined the illusion track."

"I can help," Eda offered, speaking quickly. "I'm in the potions track. There's all kinds of potions that can do almost anything you can think of. I'm sure there's a potion out there that can help you!"

"You think so?"

"Definitely!" Eda stood up in excitement. "I can brew it up for you and everything! Potions tend to be temporary though, so... I can be your dealer!"

"Whoah, whoah, you're going way too fast!" Raine interrupted. "You don't even know if this is going to work."

She sat back down. "Sorry, I just..." she rubbed the back of her head. "...really want you to be happy."

"Eww," Raine stuck their tongue out. "Now you're the sappy one!"

A light blush tinted Eda's cheeks.

"Plus, I can ask the potions professor myself. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Guess I was so caught up in what I could do to fix it myself that I forgot about the resources available to me." They looked Eda in the eye and smiled softly.

"Thanks for your support."

The blush spread even further across Eda's face.

"No problem."

Notes:

"Raine ended up speaking to the potions professor who, like everyone else in the boiling isles, was understanding and able to point them in the right direction. They were prescribed a hormone replacement potion, and seemed much brighter and happier thanks to the newfound deepening of their voice and flattening of their chest."
