Wish Granted in the Wrong Way

Subaru shuffled into the dimly lit game store, the dim, flickering fluorescent lights casting long shadows across the worn linoleum floor. The air was thick with the scent of old cardboard and stale air, a fitting ambiance for the decrepit establishment. His eyes darted around, scanning the cluttered shelves lined with an eclectic mix of dusty, forgotten titles. And then he saw it: "Resident Evil: The Phoenix Tears."

The case stood out amidst the chaos, its glossy cover gleaming ominously in the low light. It was the Master Edition, promising not just a game but an escape, a sanctuary from the relentless gray of his existence.

His fingers trembled as he reached for the case, the cover art an intense tableau of chaos and darkness. It beckoned with the promise of hours lost in a digital world far removed from his own. Subaru's life had long been a series of lonely days and darker nights, an endless loop of gaming and solitude behind the heavy curtains of his small, cluttered apartment. The few memories he had of the outside world were tinged with sorrow and regret.

The inheritance he had received after his parents' tragic death had dwindled away, spent on games and junk food. Their deaths haunted him, a grim reminder of his own failure. He had been there, at the wheel, distracted and careless. The accident was his fault, and the guilt had consumed him, driving him deeper into his reclusive lifestyle.

Now, as he stood in the game store, Subaru was nearly penniless, without qualifications, without a job, and without a future. His days were a blur of meaningless hours, punctuated only by the moments he could lose himself in another virtual reality.

Should he work as a janitor? A—

The shopkeeper, a grizzled old man with a permanent scowl etched into his features, broke through his reverie with a barked command.

"Hey! We're closing! You buying that or not?"

Subaru jolted, his heart pounding in his chest. "Yeah, sorry," he mumbled, fumbling with shaking hands to pull his wallet from his pocket. The shopkeeper huffed impatiently, his scowl deepening as Subaru handed over the last of his cash. The transaction completed, Subaru clutched the game to his chest and stepped out into the cool night air.

The streets were deserted, the world around him eerily silent. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a ghostly pallor over the empty sidewalks and shuttered storefronts. Subaru's thoughts drifted, as they often did, to the darker corners of his mind. If he died, would anyone cry? Would anyone even notice? The answer, he knew, was no.

He wondered, not for the first time, what it would be like to die and be reborn. In his fantasies, he imagined a new life, a new world where he mattered. Perhaps he could come back as a prince, someone with a destiny. Or maybe as Rimuru Tempest, with a world to conquer, or Rudeus, with a chance to start over. Even Tanya, with a new life full of adventure and excitement. But who was he kidding? Even in his wildest dreams, he couldn't see himself as someone important. He didn't need superpowers or magic. Just a little love and respect, a single person who cared would be enough. A cute girl with silver hair, maybe. Someone to hold onto in this bleak existence.

He looked at both sides of the road. Perhaps he should wait for a truck?

His reverie was shattered by a strange noise, a soft "cressheh" behind him. Subaru spun around, heart racing. In the dim light, he saw something small and indistinct floating around him.

"Lia! Lia! Are you okay?" A frantic voice called out. Subaru's head began to spin, confusion and disorientation washing over him.

'Why does my head spin?'

The world tilted, and he stumbled, struggling to keep his balance.

"Lia! Wake up!" The voice was desperate, filled with panic.

Subaru's vision blurred, the night swirling into a vortex of shadows and light. He felt an inexplicable pull, as if the very fabric of reality was shifting around him. The ground seemed to dissolve beneath his feet, and he was falling, falling into an abyss.

'Am I dreaming? Who is Lia? Why do I feel so dizzy?'

As he regained consciousness, he found himself staring at the source of the voice. A small, floating cat hovered before him, its features barely discernible in the darkness.

"Sheesh, Lia," the figure spoke in a high-pitched voice, grinning slightly. "You nearly gave me a heart failure! Now, are you feeling okay? We still need to find your insignia, remember?"

Subaru gave it a blank look, his mind struggling to process the bizarre scene before him. Despite his depression, he had never resorted to drugs, never indulged in hallucinations. But this... this was something else entirely.

"Are you a VR Talking Tom from Outfit7? Is this a commercial prank?" he asked, his voice trembling.

The cat's ears perked. "Huh?"

"Isn't—" But then he froze. The voice that came out wasn't his own. Panic surged through him, and he looked around wildly, desperate to find something reflective.

He saw some strange, human-like creatures in the distance, but they weren't important right now. He needed to see his face. He needed to understand what was happening. He spotted a fountain nearby and sprinted towards it, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"No way..." he whispered, staring into the water. The reflection that stared back at him was not his own. He was in a different world, in a different body.

The face in the water was that of a young woman with silver hair, her eyes wide with shock. She had large, expressive eyes the color of amethysts, deep and luminous, framed by long, thick eyelashes. Her hair was a cascade of silver, falling in soft waves down to her waist, shimmering like moonlight against the dark water. Her skin was pale and flawless, giving her an ethereal, almost otherworldly appearance.

"Is this…a game world?"

Subaru's hands trembled as he touched his face—no, her face—in the reflection. The sensation was surreal, the weight of his new body foreign and disconcerting. He felt the unfamiliar heft of a chest, the way it shifted as he moved. Long hair brushed against his back and shoulders, a constant reminder of his transformed identity.

"I am in a different world? But as the... heroine?"

Then, he fainted.

Chapter 2: It's Got To Be A Game…Right

Chapter Text

It's Got To Be A Game…Right

Subaru regained consciousness. He blinked around, his vision slowly coming into focus. He felt something soft and persistent poking his cheek. It was an odd sensation, almost like a small paw.

"Lia?"

He blinked again as he sat up, feeling disoriented. The small cat was still floating beside him, its little paws waving frantically.

"This can't be real…" Subaru murmured, blinking rapidly as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. Then he looked down at the unfamiliar mounds on his chest. They were soft and round, a sensation that was alien and startling to him. With a mixture of curiosity and disbelief, he poked them experimentally. "Ahm!" The unexpected sensation made him gasp.

Driven by a mix of panic and curiosity, Subaru's hand moved lower. His fingers brushed against the empty crotch area where he had always felt something else. "What the…?" He felt a surge of confusion and disbelief. He poked around a bit more, just to be sure, and his face contorted into a look of utter bewilderment.

"Uh, Lia, what are you doing?" the cat asked nervously, its tiny eyes darting around as if expecting someone to come by and catch them in this awkward moment. Puck's voice was high-pitched and shaky, clearly unsettled by Subaru's actions.

Subaru jumped back, his face turning crimson with embarrassment. "I…I was just checking!" he stammered, his voice rising in pitch. "This is all just so weird! I mean, I'm a girl now? Really?"

Puck floated closer, his expression a mix of concern and irritation. "Yes, really. But poking and prodding isn't going to help. We have more important things to worry about right now."

"Lia, huh?" Subaru mused aloud, trying to wrap his mind around this new identity. So that's the name of this avatar. He had nothing against females, but he was a guy and had always wanted a cool, handsome avatar. Not some chick. "This commercial prank is too realistic." Then he yelled at the sky, frustration bubbling up. "Oi, Gamemasters! You there?"

Silence.

"Status!" he yelled, expecting a floating window to appear in front of him, something like a game menu.

Nothing.

"Uh… Show my status?" he tried again, his voice tinged with desperation.

Nothing.

"Lia," the cat said, drawing his attention. "People are watching."

Subaru looked around and noticed that quite a few people had stopped to stare at his bizarre antics. Some were whispering, others just gawking openly. He felt his face heat up even more, a mix of embarrassment and frustration boiling over.

"Okay, okay, this is reaaally happening," he muttered to himself, trying to regain some composure. "So, I'm stuck in this avatar, and there's no game menu to help. Fantastic."

Puck sighed, hovering closer. "Yes, it's happening. But we need to focus on finding the thief, remember?"

"Right, the thief," Subaru echoed, nodding as he tried to gather his thoughts. "Let's get do it, Cat. And maybe I'll figure out what the hell is going on along the way."

"Good idea. And maybe keep your hands to yourself for now, alright?"

Subaru couldn't help but laugh, the absurdity of the situation catching up to him. "Yeah, probably a gooood idea. Let's go find that thief."

Subaru looked around and sure enough, there were people—humans and demi-humans alike—staring at him with a mix of curiosity and amusement. He could feel their eyes on him, making him even more self-conscious. So, these were players too? If he was really stuck here for some time, he couldn't afford to make a fool out of himself. But if he was stuck here, he might as well make the most of it. Perhaps gaming here would distract him from his dreary reality back home…

He shook his head, clearing away the dark thoughts.

"Ooh, I haven't introduced myself yet," He looked at the cat and grinned, slipping into his usual bravado. He did his signature pose: left hand close to hips, hip bent a bit, right hand pointing at the sky, chest out and a confident smile plastered across his face. "Yo! I am Subaru Natsuki, clueless and broke beyooond comparison! Are you my guide?"

The cat narrowed its eyes, clearly unimpressed. "That thief… she really shouldn't have pushed you that hard." It suddenly floated behind his neck and disappeared, but he could still hear the cat's voice in his head, echoing strangely. "Your name is Emilia, a half-elf and candidate for the royal selection. A thief just stole your insignia and we gotta find her before taking you to a doctor."

"Insignia?" Subaru frowned, the word not making much sense to him. But then, an image of a golden-colored small object, like a fancy badge with intricate designs, popped into his mind. Subaru assumed it was the cat's doing. The insignia was oval-shaped with elaborate etchings and a small gemstone embedded in the center, radiating a soft glow. "Oh… so it is my quest? Great! Although I would reaaaly—" he paused, catching himself. Why was he speaking like that? "—like to change my avatar."

"Lia," the cat spoke again, its voice strict and authoritative. "We don't have time to waste. We better find your insignia lest you lose your position as a candidate for the royal selection."

"Okay, got it! Find the insignia!" Subaru declared with renewed determination. He began to walk, then abruptly stopped. "Uh… how are we supposed to find this insignia?"

"Ask people for a young girl with blonde hair and a slim figure."

"Okay!" he shouted enthusiastically before poking his left breast once more, unable to get over the strange new sensations of his body. "These things are reaaaly weird."

"Lia…" the cat's voice carried a note of warning, clearly growing impatient with his antics.

"Right! Insignia!" Subaru said, snapping back to attention. "Uh Neko-chan, what's your name again?"

"Puck,"

"Nice to meet you, Puck!"

"Yeah…likewise."

Subaru looked around, trying to figure out his next move. The street was bustling with activity, merchants shouting their wares, children running around playing, and various creatures—both human and otherwise—going about their business. The place had a medieval vibe, with cobblestone streets and buildings made of stone and wood, giving it an old-world charm that felt oddly comforting.

He approached a fruit vendor, a burly man with a bushy beard and a friendly smile. "Excuse me, have you seen a young girl with blonde hair and a slim figure around here?"

The vendor scratched his head, thinking for a moment. "Aye, I think I saw someone like that running towards the market square. Seemed in a hurry."

"Thank you!" Subaru said, giving a small bow. He turned and started towards the market square, his new body feeling strange but manageable.

As he walked, he couldn't help but notice how different everything felt. His balance was off, and he was constantly aware of the weight on his chest. His long silver hair swayed with every step, occasionally getting caught in the slight breeze. It was both beautiful and bothersome, a constant reminder of his transformed identity.

"Lia, we're on the right track," the cat's voice reassured him from within his mind. "Stay focused."

"Yeah, yeah," Subaru muttered, weaving through the crowd. The market square was even busier, filled with stalls selling everything from exotic spices to handmade jewelry. The air was thick with the mingling scents of exotic foods, incense, and a hint of sweat from the bustling crowd.

Subaru approached a bread vendor, a stout woman with flour-dusted hands and a warm smile. Her stall was piled high with various loaves, from crusty baguettes to soft rolls. "Excuse me, have you seen a young girl with blonde hair and a slim figure around here?"

The woman frowned, thinking. "Can't say I have, dear. Lots of folks pass through here, though. You might want to try asking around more."

"Thanks anyway," Subaru said, giving a slight bow. As he turned to leave, he felt an odd sensation, as if the woman's eyes were lingering on him with a mix of curiosity and unease. He brushed it off and moved on to a nearby wine seller, a tall man with a weathered face and a deep voice, arranging bottles of red and white wines on his table.

"Hello, sir. Have you seen a blonde girl, slim build, around here recently?" Subaru asked, trying to keep his tone casual.

The wine seller shook his head. "Nope, haven't seen anyone like that. You might have better luck near the alleyways. Those sorts tend to hang around there."

"Got it, thanks," Subaru replied, though he felt a bit deflated. As he walked away, he noticed the wine seller watching him warily, as if trying to make sense of something.

As he walked through the market, he noticed the odd languages on the signs and couldn't read any of them. The people were selling some strange items: odd trinkets, glowing stones, and various potions in colorful vials. The fruits and vegetables looked unfamiliar, vibrant colors and unusual shapes he'd never seen before. Meats hung from hooks, some recognizable and others looking like they came from creatures out of a fantasy game.

Just then, he saw a little girl with green hair crying in the corner of the market. She looked lost and scared, her small frame shaking with sobs. Subaru's heart went out to her, despite the cat in his mind telling him not to waste time.

"We should keep moving, Lia. This isn't our concern," the cat advised sternly.

"I can't just leave her like that," Subaru insisted. "Even if she's an NPC, she needs help."

He approached the little girl slowly, trying not to startle her. "Hey there, are you lost?" he asked gently, kneeling down to her level. The girl looked up at him with wide, teary eyes but didn't respond. She seemed hesitant, unsure whether to trust him.

Subaru thought quickly. He remembered a simple magic trick his dad had taught him. He found a coin in the pouch at his waist, a small piece of silver that glinted in the light. "Watch this," he said, smiling warmly. He held the coin between his fingers, showing it to the girl before making it 'disappear' with a quick sleight of hand.

The girl's eyes widened in amazement. Subaru then 'pulled' the coin from behind her ear, making her giggle through her tears. He grinned, pleased that he had managed to cheer her up.

"See? All better now," he said, handing her the coin. "Now, let's find your mom, okay?"

After walking around for about ten minutes, a woman saw them and came running over, her face filled with relief. "Oh, thank the gods! Eina, where have you been?" she cried, scooping the girl into a tight hug. When the woman's eyes met Subaru's, she flinched slightly but then reluctantly said, "Thank you for helping my daughter."

"No problem," Subaru replied, smiling softly. "Glad I could help."

As the woman walked away, Subaru couldn't shake the feeling that something about him was making people uneasy. But he brushed it off and continued his search for the blonde girl with the slim figure.

He asked a few more people with no luck, until he finally approached a blacksmith hammering away at a glowing piece of metal. The man was muscular, with a rugged beard and a stern expression.

"Excuse me," Subaru called out over the clanging of metal. "I'm looking for a young girl with blonde hair and a slim build. Have you seen anyone like that around?"

The blacksmith paused, wiping sweat from his brow. "You talking about Felt? She's a known thief around here. Lives in the slum area."

"Felt, huh?" Subaru nodded. "Thanks for the info."

"Be careful," the blacksmith warned. "She's got a sharp tongue and quicker hands. Watch your pockets."

"Will do," Subaru said, heading off toward the slums with the cat giving him directions in his mind.

As he walked, the buildings became more dilapidated, and the streets narrower and dirtier. He couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. This game world was strange and dangerous, but also thrilling in a way his old life never was.

"Alright, Puck," Subaru said, addressing the voice in his head. "Lead the way to Felt. Let's get that insignia back."

"Stay sharp, Lia," the cat replied. "We're almost there."

As Subaru made his way through the winding streets of the slum area, the air grew thick with the stench of decay and refuse. The buildings here were crumbling, their wooden frames sagging under the weight of neglect. Dark alleys branched off from the main path, each one seeming more ominous than the last. His nerves were on edge, every shadow and sudden movement catching his attention.

He saw a drunk man slumped against a wall, a bottle of some foul-smelling liquid clutched in his hand. The man's clothes were tattered, and his face was covered in grime. Subaru hesitated for a moment, then decided to approach him.

"Hey, man," Subaru called out, trying to keep his tone casual. "I'm looking for a girl named Felt. Blonde hair, slim build. Seen her around?"

The drunk man looked up, his eyes bloodshot and unfocused. He took a swig from his bottle before answering. "Felt, eh? She's a slippery one. If you're looking for the bitch, try the loot house down that way." He pointed a shaky finger down a narrow, twisting alley.

"Thanks, bro!" Subaru said, trying to sound upbeat.

"Yeah, yeah, fuck off, witch," the man muttered, taking another drink.

Subaru froze, the words hitting him like a punch to the gut. Witch? What did they mean by that? He felt a sudden rush of anxiety, his mind racing with questions.

"Pay them no heed, Lia," Puck, the cat, said reassuringly in his mind. "They don't know what they're talking about. Let's just find Felt and get your insignia back."

Subaru took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Right, right. Focus on the task. Got it."

He followed the drunk man's directions, heading down the narrow alley. The deeper he went, the more decrepit the surroundings became. The windows of the buildings were boarded up, and trash littered the streets. He saw a few rats scurrying about, and the occasional distant shout or crash echoed through the alleyways.

As he walked, he couldn't shake the unease that had settled over him. The word "witch" echoed in his mind. Why did people keep reacting to him like that? Was there something about this body, Emilia's body, that made them uneasy?

"Lia, we're getting close," Puck's voice interrupted Subaru's thoughts. "Just a bit further."

Subaru nodded to himself, picking up the pace. He turned a corner and saw a dilapidated hut that looked like it had seen better days, with a faded sign hanging precariously above the door. This must be the loot house.

He approached the hut cautiously and knocked on the door. A grumpy, heavy voice answered from inside, "For a rat."

"What?"

"For a whale?"

"Lia," Puck supplied. "I think he is asking for a password."

Subaru froze, his mind blank. "Uh, I don't know the password, but I'm looking for Felt. She stole my insignia."

There was a pause before the voice grumbled, "If you don't know the password, get lost."

Subaru hesitated. "Please, I reaaally need to see Felt. It's urgent."

The door creaked open, revealing a giant old man with a weathered face and a muscular build. His eyes narrowed as he studied Subaru. "Felt should be coming here soon. She's got something to sell to a client. That might be your insignia."

Subaru nodded, feeling a mix of relief and tension. "I'll wait then."

He stepped inside the hut, feeling the giant's watchful gaze on him. The interior was dimly lit, cluttered with various trinkets and items that looked like they had been scavenged from different places. Subaru found a spot to sit and waited, his mind racing with thoughts about what might happen next.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows inside the hut, Puck spoke up. "Lia, it's time for my nap. If anything happens, I'll act according to our contract."

"Uh, what contract?" Subaru asked, confused.

"...right. Forget it," Puck replied, his voice fading as he presumably went to sleep.

Moments later, someone knocked on the door. The giant asked, "For a rat?"

A high-pitched voice responded correctly each time, and the door swung open. Subaru was greeted by the sight of the girl who had stolen Emilia's insignia. She had blonde hair, bright green eyes, and a defiant look on her face.

"You!" Felt yelled, pointing accusingly at Subaru.

Subaru struck a dramatic pose and did his signature introduction, albeit awkwardly in his new body. "Yo! I am Emilia, clueless beyond comparison! Return the insignia or…uh… I'll curse you!"

Felt narrowed her eyes. "You're a liar. You can't do anything to me, PRINCESS."

Subaru raised his hand upwards, pretending to use magic. "Lightning Style: Chidori!"

Silence.

The giant and the girl, each raised an eyebrow. Unimpressed.

"Uh... Kaa—"

Suddenly, an ice spear shot out of nowhere, hitting the ceiling with unbelievable speed. Felt and the giant both looked stunned.

"I should have known better…" the giant said worriedly, taking out a club. "Silver hair, amethyst eyes, and pointy ears…"

Subaru was confused. Was this body a criminal character? Before he could say anything, a seductive female voice spoke from the entrance of the hut.

"Ara~ ara~," the voice cooed. "Are we fighting here? And I thought it was supposed to be a normal deal." A woman stepped into the light, revealing her long black hair, pale skin, and crimson eyes. She wore a revealing outfit that accentuated her curves, and a dangerous smile played on her lips.

"Well, no problem," The woman continued. "I was supposed to kill everyone anyway…"

Before anyone could react, the woman vanished from her spot and reappeared behind the giant, slicing his throat in one swift motion. Blood sprayed, and the giant crumpled to the floor.

"Gramps!" Felt screamed, pulling out a knife, but the woman was too fast. She appeared in front of the girl and sliced her midsection with a fluid motion, leaving her to fall to the ground in pieces.

Subaru was shaking, his mind reeling from the gruesome scene. This game was too realistic! Too much gore!

He backed away, his heart pounding in his chest. "Stay back!" he yelled, though his voice trembled. "I-I'll curse you!"

The woman merely licked her blades, her eyes glinting with sadistic pleasure. She vanished again, reappearing right in front of Subaru.

Before he could react, he felt a sharp pain in his stomach.

'This is…'

He looked down to see his lower half standing while he was falling to the ground.

'...not a game.'

"How magnificent your bowels are!" The woman exclaimed, her voice filled with twisted delight.

Subaru's vision blurred as he lay on the cold, dirty floor. His life flashed before his eyes, and he felt a wave of despair and helplessness.

With that, Subaru Natsuki died.

oOo

"Sheesh, Lia," the figure spoke in a high-pitched voice, grinning slightly. "You nearly gave me a heart failure! Now, are you feeling okay? We still need to find your insignia, remember?"

Subaru gave the cat a blank look. His mind struggled to process the bizarre scene before him.

Then he recalled what had just happened. He was…killed. Everyone died. The memory was vivid and gruesome. He could feel the cold steel slicing through his flesh, the pain searing through him.

With that, he threw up. His body convulsed with each heave, the trauma overwhelming him. The taste of bile burned in his throat. He fell to his knees, gasping for breath.

"Lia! Lia! Are you okay?!" Puck's voice was filled with panic. The little cat darted around in concern.

Subaru was not okay. This wasn't a game. He clearly remembered being sliced in half like a cucumber. Yet, here he was—alive. Alive at the point when he first arrived here.

His heart pounded as the realization set in. Was his wish to be cared for by a silver-haired maiden fulfilled in this way? What an irony. He himself was the maiden now.

The absurdity of the situation almost made him laugh, but it was too much to process. It wasn't a dream. Hallucination was out of question. So…does this mean that what he saw was a vision?

The image of the woman in the loot house flashed in his mind—her sadistic smile, her deadly grace.

She said she was assigned to kill everyone there. So if he avoids going there, the old giant and Felt will surely be killed.

Whatever the reason, he knows that he needs to save that giant and Felt. He can't let anyone die…because of him

"I am okay," he replied. "Let's get our insignia back, Puck."

Chapter 3: Uh…yes. Behold, I am the Witch!

Chapter Text

Uh…yes. Behold, I am the Witch!

Puck was genuinely concerned about his daughter's mental health after she got that nasty whack on the head. She'd been acting super strange ever since. Seriously, she even threw up. And, okay, it was gross, but she had a knack for knowing where that thief was.

But the weirdest thing? She POKED her own boobs.

Is this puberty? God, he hoped not. He definitely didn't want to have the TALK anytime soon.

Right now, they were sprinting through the slum area of Luginica, dodging trash piles and jumping over stray cats.

"Daaamn!" Lia panted. "This chick has no stamina at all!"

Chick? Puck glanced around. There wasn't any poultry in sight.

"And these things are reaaaly troublesome." She POKED them again.

"Lia, are you sure this is the right direction?" Puck asked, trying to keep up.

"What? Oh yeah, cat," she said, not even looking back.

That one stung a bit. He wouldn't mind if anyone else called him a 'cat,' but Lia? Ouch.

They finally reached an old, beat-up hut. Lia started banging on the door like a madwoman.

"Oi! Open the door, old man!" she yelled, her voice echoing in the narrow alley.

"For a rat?" came a gruff voice from the other side.

"Just open the door!"

"No password, no entry."

"What the f—"

"Lia!" Puck snapped. "Language."

"Tch," she rolled her eyes so hard Puck thought they might fall out. "Oi! If you don't open this door right now, I'm calling the police!"

"What?! Who're you, lady?" The voice sounded confused and a bit scared.

"Alright, here it goes—" she said, backing up a few feet. She stretched out her hand at the door and yelled, "Kaaaamehaamehaaaa—!"

Puck was regretting letting her decide their next move after she got hurt. This was getting way out of hand.

"Lia," he began calmly. "I think you sh—"

But his eyes widened when he sensed the energy building inside her. He hadn't noticed it earlier, but her Gate was almost shattered. She should be dead right now, but somehow, energy was coursing through her gate.

The amount of energy she was about to release could obliterate an entire army.

At this rate, she'd end up in the dungeon prison of the castle before nightfall. Becoming the queen? Yeah, right.

"O-okay!" The person on the other side, a giant by the sound of it, was smart enough to open the door quickly. He eyed her warily. "Now talk."

"Great!" she exclaimed. "Get out of here!"

The giant blinked. Puck blinked.

"Are you robbing me?" The giant's voice was laced with confusion.

"What? No, of cooourse not!" she said hurriedly. "Now, get away from this place or death awaits you!"

Was Lia actually threatening to kill someone?

The giant froze, his eyes wide with fear. Without another word, he stepped aside and then bolted, his heavy footsteps echoing down the alley.

"Lia," Puck said, his voice steady but strained. "After we get our insignia back, we're going to have a long talk."

"Yeah, yeah," she shrugged, brushing him off. Was this some kind of rebellious phase? "Now listen, here's what we're going to do."

Subaru or whatever she was calling herself now, was definitely losing it. But at least she had a plan. Puck could only hope it wouldn't involve more magical outbursts or threats of police intervention.

oOo

Subaru grinned to himself, feeling a surge of confidence. This should do it. He settled by the counter, trying to strike a pose that screamed nonchalant coolness. He leaned his elbow on the wooden table, his chin resting in his palm. He tried to channel his inner Ayanokouji Kiyotaka—calm, collected, and in control.

Meanwhile, the cat, Puck, was hidden just behind the door, ready to back him up if things went south.

Moments later, there was a knock on the door.

"It's open," Subaru said, trying to lower his voice a bit. He aimed for a mysterious, sage-like tone but ended up sounding more like he had a sore throat.

The door creaked open, and Felt stepped in, eyes darting around suspiciously.

"Who the fuck are you?" she demanded, her voice full of attitude.

Subaru tried not to flinch. "I am Subaru Natsuki, the Great… Sage."

"Great Sage—my ass," Felt snorted, clearly unimpressed. "Talk business. Where's old man Rom?"

"He, uh, went to fetch… tea," Subaru improvised, mentally cursing his lame excuse.

"Tea? Like 'tea-tea'?" Felt echoed, her disbelief clear.

Subaru cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. "Now, I believe you have something that belongs to me."

Felt's expression turned wary. She took a step back, her hand moving to her chest protectively.

"The Insignia," Subaru clarified, his eyes narrowing. He knew the killer was prowling around, and he wanted to wrap this up quickly.

"How do you know I stole an insignia?" Felt asked, her tone defensive. "I don't imagine the one who requested it would have leaked it, and I only just stole it. It certainly isn't the sort of thing you'd just happen to hear."

Subaru smirked, deciding it was time for the big reveal. He pulled off his cloak with a flourish, trying to channel his inner Light Yagami. His face was smooth, his smile calculated.

Felt's eyes widened, and she took another step back, clearly thrown off by his sudden transformation.

"...Because," Subaru said, pausing for dramatic effect, "I am the witch." He placed his silver hair above his pointy ears, showing them off.

There was a moment of stunned silence. Subaru could almost hear Puck facepalming behind the door. Felt's expression shifted from confusion to something more guarded.

"The witch, huh?" she said, trying to mask her fear with bravado. "You're crazy, you know that?"

"Crazy or not," Subaru replied, trying to keep his smirk from turning into a full-blown grin, "you're going to give me that insignia."

"Psh," Felt snorted, crossing her arms. "You're all just talk."

"Really?" Subaru shot back, his face lighting up with a mischievous grin. He brought his palm in front of her, eyes narrowing as he focused. "Rasengan."

A moment of silence passed, and then, to Subaru's surprise and Felt's bewilderment, a ball made of ice appeared on his hand. It wobbled precariously, almost slipping off.

"...Are you supposed to throw that at me?" Felt inquired, one eyebrow raised in disbelief.

"Uh…no," Subaru stammered, trying to keep the ice ball steady. "But the point is, I can curse you so bad that you wouldn't want to mess with me. If you want to know how bad, you'll have to see for yourself. So, give me my insignia back."

Felt's eyes flicked to the door, then back to Subaru. "And if I don't?"

Subaru's mind raced. He hadn't exactly planned this far ahead. Desperation fueled his next move. He grinned widely, making a Tiger seal with his hands. "Domain Expansion: Malevolent Sh—"

Before he could finish, a seductive female voice interrupted from the entrance of the hut.

"Ara~ ara~," the voice cooed, dripping with menace. "Are we fighting here? And I thought it was supposed to be a normal deal."

A woman stepped into the light, revealing her long black hair, pale skin, and crimson eyes. She wore a revealing outfit that accentuated her curves, and a dangerous smile played on her lips.

"Well, no problem," the woman continued, her tone chilling. "I was supposed to kill everyone anyway…"

Subaru's heart leapt into his throat. He knew they were in serious trouble. "Puck, now!"

Puck sprang into action, appearing from behind the door with a burst of energy. The small cat transformed into his larger, more formidable form, a great spirit exuding an aura of icy power. He launched a barrage of ice crystals at the woman, who merely smiled and dodged with inhuman speed, her movements a blur.

The woman's eyes gleamed with excitement. "Oh, a spirit! How delightful!" She lunged at Puck, her blade flashing in the dim light.

Puck met her attack head-on, summoning a wall of ice that rose between them. The woman's blade sliced through it effortlessly, but Puck was already on the move, flanking her with a flurry of ice shards aimed at her vitals.

The woman twisted gracefully, dodging most of the shards, but a few grazed her skin, drawing thin lines of blood. She licked her lips, her smile widening. "Impressive, little cat. But you'll need more than that to stop me."

Puck hissed, his eyes glowing with determination. "You'll regret underestimating me!" He summoned a massive ice spear and hurled it at her with incredible force.

The woman's reflexes were lightning-fast. She sidestepped the spear, which embedded itself deeply into the wall behind her. Without missing a beat, she closed the distance between them, her blade aimed at Puck's heart.

But Puck was ready. He summoned a protective barrier of ice around himself, the blade shattering against it with a resounding crash. He retaliated with a wave of freezing energy, enveloping The woman in a blizzard.

The woman laughed, the sound eerie and chilling. "So cold! I love it!" She broke free from the icy prison with a burst of power, her movements more frenzied and aggressive.

Subaru watched the fight, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew he had to do something. He couldn't just stand there. Summoning every ounce of courage, he focused on the insignia in his hand, willing it to activate. A faint glow emanated from it, but nothing more.

The woman noticed the glow and her eyes narrowed. "Oh? What do we have here?" She changed her trajectory, aiming for Subaru.

"Lia, look out!" Puck shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

Subaru's instincts kicked in. He ducked just in time as the woman's blade slashed through the air where his head had been moments before. He rolled to the side, clutching the insignia tightly.

Puck seized the opportunity. He unleashed a powerful blast of icy wind that caught the woman off guard, sending her crashing into the wall. Ice formed around her limbs, holding her in place.

"Oh!" The woman smiled, struggling against the icy restraints. "I want to see your bowels!"

Puck floated down to Subaru's side, his form shimmering with residual energy. "Lia, we need to go. My time is almost up Now."

Subaru nodded, still shaken but determined. He glanced at Felt, who was pale and trembling. "Come on, we're leaving."

She dumbly nodded and followed them.

They hurried out of the hut, leaving the woman trapped but not defeated. The night was dark and full of dangers, but for now, they had survived. As they ran through the slums, Subaru couldn't help but feel a strange mix of fear and exhilaration. This world was deadly, but he wasn't alone. And with allies like the cat— Puck, maybe, he had a fighting chance.

"Ara~ ara~ leaving so soon?"

Sybaru froze. This is...

Before he could react, he felt a cold sensation on his back.

I Am Not Insaaane!

“Sheesh, Lia—”

Subaru’s body convulsed a he threw up once again. This time, it wasn’t just yellow bile—it was blood, dark and alarming. The sight of it made his heart race faster than it already was.

“Lia?!” Puck’s voice was high-pitched and filled with worry as he floated closer to her. His usually calm demeanor was completely shattered by the sight of Subaru’s distress. “What’s happening to you?”

“I-I was soooo careless… so ooooverconfident…!” Subaru muttered through chattering teeth, his voice barely above a whisper. His whole body was trembling as if he were caught in a fierce winter storm.

Puck’s confusion was palpable. “One moment you were fine, and now this? Lia, please, you need to tell me what’s going on!”

“It—it isn’t a game…” Subaru’s voice was rising in pitch, bordering on hysteria. “It wasn’t a vision. It was too real… I FUCKIN’ DIED—Twice!” His eyes darted around the room, unable to focus. He grabbed onto Puck with a desperate grip, clutching the small spirit like a lifeline. “We need to saaave them! She'll kill them!”

Puck’s eyes widened in shock, his worry turning into a sharp, cold anger. “What are you talking about, Lia? You’re not making any sense!” He slapped Subaru’s cheek with his tiny paw, a surprising amount of force behind it. “What is it? Tell me everything.”

“You won't—”

“I will believe you,” Puck interupted, his voice firm and unwavering. “We are family. We stick together, no matter what. Just tell me.”

Subaru's eyes widened, a flood of memories crashing over him.

‘Listen, boy. If you ever need anything, just tell me—we're like friends. We even look alike!’

‘We are directly blood-related, of course we’d look the same.’

‘Ha-ha, can't beat ya in logic. But champ, if you need anything, we'll be there. After all—’

“Lia!” Puck’s voice pulled him back to the present. “What were you thinking about? Now tell me what is the matter?”

“I…am not from this—” Subaru gasped, the words choked off as he fell to his knees, his hands clutching his throat as if an invisible force were strangling him.

‘I love you, Fūgal, but…I hate her,’ a voice that felt oddly familiar, whispered into his ear. ‘So, please, don't say anything…’

“Lia?!”

Subaru sat up suddenly, his mind reeling with the implications of what was happening. He was summoned to this world as a weak girl who could only do pathetic ice magic. And every time he died, he would return to a certain point in time. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks: he couldn’t tell anyone about this, because that woman—whoever she was—would… hurt him… badly.

Puck floated closer, his expression a mix of worry and determination. “Lia, whatever it is, we’ll face it together. I promise. You’re not alone. We’re family, remember?”

Subaru looked at Puck, his eyes brimming with tears. He felt a sudden surge of emotion, a desperate need to confide, but the fear of the unseen threat held him back. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. “Puck… I can’t explain it all, but I need you to trust me. I think I’m cursed.”

Puck opened his mouth to protest, but Emilia raised a hand. “No, Puck. It’s not that I don’t want to tell you. It’s that I literally can’t. Please, believe me.”

Puck’s eyes softened. “Alright, Lia. If you say so. But we’ll figure it out together.”

Subaru sat on the ground, cross-legged, and buried his face in his hands, his silver hair falling around him like a curtain. Inside, he felt a whirlwind of emotions.

‘In my world, in my life, I was considering killing myself. It was because I was too afraid to face the reality that they died in order to save me. I was there; I could have saved them if I wanted. But I…I was frozen. Now, in this new world, every time I die, I come back to life at the point where I was brought into this world. So is this a second chance? Or a punishment? Either way, I don’t care. I don’t have anything or anyone waiting for me back in my world. I will make the most of it and I won’t let anyone die. I will start from zero—once again and become the k…queen and make some friends and family. That is a promise!’

Subaru then began to laugh, a sound that started as a low chuckle and grew into a full-blown, mad cackle. It was a laugh tinged with desperation and a hint of madness. His shoulders shook, and tears streamed down his face, mixing with the remnants of blood on his lips. There was no point in denying it. Subaru was now Emilia.

Puck looked at her worriedly, his little face creased with concern. He hovered around her, unsure of what to do. “Lia, talk to me. What’s happening?”

Emilia looked at Puck and winked through her tears. “Puck! I’m afraid I can’t tell you what’s wrong with me. Not because I don’t trust you—but because it will probably end up killing me. But… I think I’m cursed!”

Puck tried to say something, but Emilia raised a finger, silencing him. “Shush! Now, tell me where I can find a police officer!”

“Uh, you mean Knights?” Puck asked, still looking very confused.

“Yeah! A person who can swing a blaaade and stuff,” Emilia said, trying to inject some humor into her voice, though it came out more strained than she intended.

“There should be some patrolling around here,” Puck informed her, his worry not entirely dissipating. “But there is the Knight station where we can find them easily. Uh, but why are you asking this? Don’t you know it already?”

“That’s the funny part… I don’t remember toooo much…” Emilia admitted, rubbing her temples as if trying to jog her memory.

“What?!”

“Can’t you read my mind?” Emilia inquired, looking at Puck with a hint of desperation.

“Only the things that are not restricted.” Puck's eyes widened. “There’s a new restriction!”

“Bingo! Apparently, I may have had a vision where I saw something catastrophic happening in a few hours. In order to prevent it, I need someone skilled enooough to help.”

“So—” Puck was cut off as a man approached them.

Reinhard van Astrea was a sight to behold. Tall and imposing, with vibrant red hair that seemed to glow in the sunlight, he had a sharp, chiseled jawline and blue eyes that sparkled with a mixture of curiosity and concern. His armor clinked softly with each step, and he carried himself with the grace and confidence of a seasoned warrior.

“Emilia-sama! Are you okay?” he asked, his voice gentle but firm.

Emilia’s eyes widened at the sight of him. She quickly assessed him from top to bottom, her gaze lingering on his muscular build. The man blushed under her intense scrutiny, his cheeks reddening even more as she unabashedly checked out his muscles. Without warning, she lifted his shirt to inspect his abs, her fingers grazing over his well-defined six-pack. Her touch was light but deliberate, and she nodded in satisfaction.

“Tell me, you a swordsman?” She casually asked him, her eyes still admiring his physique.

Puck gasped while Reinhard remained silent, feeling both embarrassed and confused. She was asking the SWORD SAINT if he was a swordsman?!

“Are you or not?” She nagged, her impatience growing.

“Uh…yes,” he replied, feeling somewhat insignificant. Was he not as famous as he thought he was?

“So, you know some cool moves?” She continued, her eyes now meeting his with a challenging glint.

Was she implying—no, no, keep your head clear. No impure thoughts.

“I know some combat moves if you are—”

“Great!” She then grabbed his arm and began to drag him through the streets. “Come on, champ, we've got stuff to do!”

“But, Emilia-sama!” Reinhard protested, his voice laced with confusion.

“No buts!” she shot back, her grip firm and unyielding.

Reinhard’s head was spinning as he was dragged along by this eccentric girl. “Emilia-sama, where exactly are we going?”

“To save some lives, of course! Did I not make that clear?” Emilia's eyes were alight with a mix of excitement and determination. “We’re headed to a place where a really bad lady is about to do some really bad things.”

Puck, who was still floatingaround nervously, chimed in, “Lia, maybe you should slow down a bit and explain?”

“There’s no time to slow down!” Emilia retorted, her pace not faltering. “Every second we waste, someone could be dying!”

“How do you know all this?” Reinhard asked, struggling to keep up.

“I s-saw it…” Emilia replied, her voice faltering slightly.

Reinhard, now jogging to keep up, tried to process everything. “Emilia-sama, you’re saying you had a vision?”

“A vision!” Emilia nodded. “Or something like that. “Doesn’t matter. What matters is that we get there in time to stop that killer lady.”

“The killer lady?” Reinhard repeated, trying to make sense of her words.

“Yes, the killer lady!” Emilia emphasized, her voice rising with urgency. “She’s got black hair, red eyes, and a smile that says ‘I’m gonna cut you up for fun.’”

Reinhard frowned, his grip tightening on his sword hilt. “That sounds serious. And you’re certain this isn’t a misunderstanding?”

Emilia slowed down slightly, turning to face him. Her eyes were wide and earnest. “I saw it. I saw her kill people, and I can’t just stand by and let it happen. I need your help.”

The sincerity in her voice struck a chord with Reinhard. He nodded firmly. “Alright, Emilia-sama. I’ll help you. Lead the way.”

Emilia’s face lit up with relief. “Thank you! I knew I could count on you.”

Puck floated closer, his eyes still full of concern. “Lia, remember, we’re here with you. You’re not alone.”

“I know, Puck. Thanks,” Emilia replied, giving him a small, grateful smile. “Now, let’s get to work.”

They entered the hut cautiously, the air inside thick with the smell of old wood and dust. As soon as they crossed the threshold, a massive figure loomed out of the shadows. It was an old giant, his towering frame nearly scraping the ceiling. His eyes widened in alarm, and he raised a huge, worn club threateningly.

"Who goes there?" he bellowed, his voice like rolling thunder.

Reinhard stepped forward, his presence commanding and serene despite the tension in the room. The giant’s eyes flicked to the sword at Reinhard’s side, and his grip on the club faltered. Recognizing the Sword Saint, he quickly lowered his weapon, fear replacing the initial aggression in his eyes.

“What are you doing in my loot house?” the giant asked, his tone now cautious and deferential.

Reinhard’s expression remained calm but firm. Subaru had already told him about the girl Felt. “We’re looking for information about a girl named Felt. Do you know anything about her?”

The giant hesitated, his massive shoulders tensing. For a moment, it seemed like he might refuse to answer, but Reinhard’s unwavering gaze bore into him, demanding truth. With a reluctant sigh, the giant nodded.

“I know a girl named Felt,” he admitted, his voice low.

Subaru, still on edge, interjected urgently, “Is she coming here?”

“Y-yes,” the giant replied, a hint of confusion in his voice at Subaru’s intensity.

Emilia looked around the room. “We should wait for her here,” she suggested, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “It’s the best way.”

Puck and Reinhard exchanged glances, silently agreeing to Emilia’s proposal. They did not question her apparent certainty about Felt’s arrival.

Minutes ticked by slowly. The tension in the air was palpable as they waited. To distract herself and gather more information about this world she was thrust into, Subaru began to ask questions.

“So, who’s the current king?” Subaru asked, trying to sound casual.

“There isn’t one right now,” the swordsman replied. “The throne’s empty, waiting for the next ruler.”

“And magic? What kind of magic can people do here?” Subaru continued, her curiosity genuine.

The man eyed her suspiciously but answered, “Depends on the person. There are different types of magic—fire, water, earth, wind, and more. Each person has an affinity.”

“How long do humans and demi-humans live, on average?” Subaru pressed, trying to gather as much useful information as possible.

Reinhard’s eyes narrowed slightly at the seemingly mundane questions. “Why are you asking about such common things, Emilia-sama?” he asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.

Subaru met his gaze confidently, though inside she was trembling. “I’ve lost my memories,” she stated plainly.

Reinhard’s expression hardened, his blue eyes searching hers for any sign of deceit. “What possession of yours has been stolen?” he asked, his tone serious.

Puck, hovering nearby, mentally prepared to warn Emilia not to mention the insignia. But before he could intervene, Subaru spoke up.

“I’ve lost my insignia,” she said, her voice steady.

Reinhard nodded, taking her words seriously. “Then we must get it back,” he said firmly, but there was a hint of something else too.

They settled into a tense silence, each lost in their thoughts as they waited for Felt. The minutes seemed to stretch into hours, the anticipation weighing heavily on them.

Subaru glanced around the room, her mind racing with the implications of what she had learned. This world was vastly different from her own, and yet, it offered her a chance at redemption, a chance to make things right. As they waited, she vowed to herself that she would seize this opportunity, no matter the cost.

Finally, the sound of footsteps approaching the hut broke the silence. All eyes turned toward the door, anticipation and tension rising once again.

Reinhard opened the door cautiously, revealing a slender girl with wild blonde hair and sharp, alert eyes. Felt glanced around the room, her confusion evident. “Why was I let in without the password?” she muttered under her breath. But then, her eyes widened in recognition and fear as she spotted the Sword Saint. Instinctively, she turned to flee, but Reinhard was faster. He reached out, gripping her wrist firmly but gently.

“Return what you have stolen,” Reinhard commanded, his voice calm but authoritative.

Felt sighed in defeat, knowing she couldn’t escape this time. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, ornate object—the insignia. She extended it toward Reinhard, who noticed it glowing faintly in her hand. His eyes narrowed, sensing something unusual.

Instead of taking it, Reinhard handed the insignia back to Subaru. “Keep this safe,” he instructed, then turned to Felt and Rom. “Stay behind the counter.”

Half an hour passed, the tension in the room growing thicker with each passing minute. Subaru’s mind was in turmoil. The killer woman was supposed to have appeared by now, yet there was no sign of her. Subaru fidgeted, her anxiety mounting. She felt the weight of every second pressing down on her.

Reinhard, standing by the door, began to doubt the silver-haired girl’s sanity. Perhaps the pressure of the Royal Selection was too much for her. His thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock at the front door. Instantly, Reinhard took a defensive stance, ready for anything. He opened the door slowly, Subaru holding her breath, and Puck preparing for battle.

But instead of a dangerous-looking woman, an old woman entered. She wore aristocratic clothes, her demeanor calm and composed. She had blonde hair and green eyes. She looked at Reinhard and bowed respectfully.

“Who are you?” Reinhard asked, his tone guarded.

“Christina van Elsa,” she replied.

“Why are you here?”

The woman straightened up and replied, “I am here because I asked a girl— Felt to retrieve something for me.”

Reinhard’s eyes narrowed. “Why did you ask her to steal an insignia?”

The woman’s eyes widened in genuine surprise. “An insignia? No, I asked Felt to steal a necklace from a friend. My friend took the necklace without my permission, and I couldn’t ask for it back myself, so I hired Felt to retrieve it.”

Subaru interjected, her voice laced with skepticism. “That’s not true!”

Reinhard turned to Felt, his gaze questioning. “Is what she says true?”

Felt shrugged. “The woman didn’t specify what kind of jewelry she wanted. She just asked for something that belonged to her.”

The woman nodded. “My friend has white hair, so Felt must have mistaken her for this young lady,” she explained, pointing towards Emilia.

Subaru erupted, her voice rising in panic. “She’s lying! She’s the killer laaady in disguise!”

Reinhard frowned. "She isn't. My Divine Protection confirms it,"

Reinhard gave Subaru a hard look, then turned back to the old woman. “You should confront your friend yourself instead of asking others to steal for you,” he said firmly.

The woman bowed again and left without another word. As the door closed behind her, Reinhard turned to Subaru. “You need to leave, Enilia-sama. It’s night and not safe for you to stay here.”

Subaru retorted, her voice desperate. “But she is the killeeer woman!”

Reinhard’s patience wore thin. “Please leave” he said with slight anger, his frustration evident.

Subaru opened her mouth to argue, but Puck intervened, giving her a hard look. “It’s time to go, Lia,” he said softly.

Reinhard sighed deeply, watching them leave. “Perhaps Emilia-sama is under too much pressure,” he mused. “I must report this to the Council of Wise Men.”

“I am n-not insaaane,” Subaru whispered as she walked away with Puck.

Reinhard turned his attention back to Felt, a smile forming on his lips. The girl shivered under his gaze.

“We have much to discuss, Felt-sama,” he said, his voice gentle but firm.

Felt gulped, knowing that her life was about to change dramatically.

oOo

Emilia climbed into a carriage, pulling a cat-ear hoodie over her head to obscure her distinctive silver hair. The gentle clopping of the horse’s hooves and the soft sway of the carriage did little to calm her racing thoughts. She leaned back, her mind replaying the chaotic events that had just unfolded. Everything had changed so much in such a short amount of time. The relief of knowing no one had died was overshadowed by the overwhelming uncertainty of her situation.

As the carriage trundled along, Emilia tried to piece together what she had to do next. The weight of her new reality pressed down on her: gender swap, species swap, and a completely new world. It was almost too much to process. She hugged herself tightly, trying to find some semblance of comfort in the unfamiliar body she now inhabited.

Suddenly, a more immediate concern arose. Her bladder felt uncomfortably full. She blushed, realizing she hadn’t considered how she would deal with such a mundane necessity without... well, without Subaru Junior.

“Oh… maaaan!” she muttered under her breath, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

Emilia shifted uncomfortably, trying to distract herself from her pressing need. She glanced out the window, watching the scenery pass by in a blur. “Fooocus, Subaru,” she whispered to herself. “You’ve got bigger problems than needing to pee.”

Puck, who had been quietly observing her, floated closer. “Lia, are you alright?” he asked softly, his concern evident.

Emilia forced a smile, not wanting to worry him. “Yeah, Puck. Just... getting used to all of this.”

Puck tilted his head, studying her closely. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to tell me. We’re in this together.”

Emilia nodded, her heart warming at his words. Despite the bizarre and terrifying situation, she was grateful for Puck’s unwavering support. “Thanks, Puck. I’ll remember that.”

As the carriage rolled on, Emilia took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever challenges lay ahead. She knew the road ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, but she was determined to face it head-on. After all, she had already died twice. How much worse could it get?

oOo

The scene shifted to a tall, shadowy building silhouetted against the night sky. Inside, the old woman who had visited the hut earlier stood by a large window, the city lights casting a faint glow on her face. She smirked as she removed her wig, revealing a head of sleek, dark hair.

“I wonder why Roswaal changed the plan,” she mused, her voice a mix of curiosity and irritation. Her eyes glittered with a sinister light as she continued, “I really wanted to gut them.” She chuckled maniacally, the sound echoing eerily in the empty room.

Elsa’s mind continued to churn with malevolent thoughts. She paced the room, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “Soon,” she whispered to herself, a wicked smile spreading across her face. “Very soon.”

Serene Night…!

It was midnight when the carriage reached the mansion. The night sky was a deep, inky blue, dotted with stars that shimmered like tiny diamonds. The moon hung low, casting a silvery glow over the expansive Rodewall Domain. The mansion itself was a grand structure, with towering spires and intricate stonework, its windows aglow with the soft light from within. The surrounding grounds were lush, filled with meticulously maintained gardens that were now cloaked in shadows.

Ram was the one driving the carriage. Despite being a demon and having reserves of energy beyond that of an ordinary human, she was feeling slightly exhausted from the long journey. The cool night air was a welcome relief as it brushed against her skin, carrying the faint scent of blooming night flowers.

"Emilia-sama, we're here," Ram called out, her voice soft yet clear.

There was no response from inside the carriage. Ram slid open the small window between the driver's seat and the interior. She saw Emilia asleep, her silver hair cascading around her like a halo.

With a gentle smile, Ram climbed down from the driver's seat, her shoes crunching softly on the gravel path. She walked around to the carriage door and opened it carefully, trying not to disturb the sleeping girl. She was about to lift Emilia into her arms when she noticed Rem approaching from the mansion.

Rem had been waiting at the entrance, her eyes scanning the path for any sign of the carriage. The night was quiet, the only sounds being the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures. As soon as she saw the carriage arrive, she hurried over, her heart lifting at the sight of her sister.

"Nee-sama, how was the journey?" Rem greeted her warmly, her voice carrying a note of concern. "Why are you so late?"

Ram sighed lightly. "Emilia-sama lost her insignia. We spent the entire day searching for it."

Rem's eyes widened slightly. "That must have been stressful. You look exhausted. You should rest now, Ram. I'll take Emilia-sama inside."

Ram nodded, grateful for her sister's consideration. "Thank you, Rem." She handed over the responsibility and headed towards the mansion, the weight of the day's events finally starting to wear on her.

Rem turned her attention to Emilia, who was still fast asleep. She carefully lifted her into her arms, surprised at how heavy the girl was. Despite the weight, there was something undeniably cute about her, her delicate features softened in sleep.

As Rem started towards the mansion, she noticed something glistening at the corner of Emilia's eyes. She paused, her curiosity piqued. Gently, she touched the dampness and realized they were tears.

"Why is Emilia-sama crying?" Rem wondered aloud, her heart aching for the girl she admired so much.

"It…wasn't me-e… it wasn't… my fault…" Emilia muttered in her sleep, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with anguish.

Rem's heart clenched at the words. She held Emilia closer, whispering softly, "It's okay, Emilia-sama. You're safe now."

The mansion loomed ahead, its grandeur softened by the night. Rem entered the warm, welcoming foyer, her footsteps echoing softly against the polished marble floors. She moved quietly through the dimly lit hallways, the soft glow of wall sconces guiding her way.

Reaching Emilia's room, Rem gently laid her down on the plush bed. She pulled a blanket over her and brushed a strand of silver hair from Emilia's forehead. The room was filled with the soothing scent of lavender, which helped calm Rem's own nerves as well.

"Rest well, Emilia-sama," she whispered, her voice filled with a mix of tenderness and determination. "We'll protect you. I promise."

As Rem turned to leave, she couldn't shake the image of Emilia's tear-streaked face from her mind. What had caused such pain? She resolved to find out and do whatever it took to help Emilia through it.

The night outside continued to be serene_ opposite to the turmoil in Emilia's dreams…

New Faces

Subaru scratched his butt. It felt soft. Perhaps he had a nice sleep after so many years of his parents' death. Nah, it was pointless to ruin such a good morning thinking about stuff like that.

The bed was really soft too. But his bed was too old and rough. So why? Well, who cares? A late morning sleep after the entire night playing video games on PS7 is just what he needs. This is 2030, after all. No need to wake up so early. Besides, it's not like he has school or work.

He then shifted. Something on his chest moved. Perhaps he really was THERE. To the point where he died due to lack of sunlight and overweight. But last time he checked, he was only 60 kilos—not too much.

He grabbed his chest and pressed. Ugh. That felt good. He moaned.

He continued pressing his chest and moaning in his sleep when he heard someone say—

"Nee-sama, nee-sama, do you think Emilia-sama finally hit puberty?"

"Rem, Rem, I think Emilia-sama finally hit puberty."

Then it hit Subaru. The gender swap, species swap, isekai, and his curse of return by death...

Emilia jolted awake. She looked at the two people standing in front of her, holding hands together and sticking to each other's body symmetrically.

One had pink hair tied into a side bun and a cold, indifferent expression. Her uniform was pristine, with not a single wrinkle. Her eyes were half-lidded, giving her a perpetually sleepy or bored look.

The other had light blue hair styled similarly, with a gentle yet determined expression. She seemed more approachable, but her demeanor was equally professional. Their maid outfits were classic, with frilly aprons and skirts, exuding a kind of old-world charm that clashed hilariously with Subaru's modern sensibilities.

The first thing Emilia says is, "Wow, cute girls in maid outfits? Nice, nice." She nods. "Although I feel no rush of blood like before. Perhaps it's the gender swap?"

Both girls, completely ignoring the fact that Emilia was in front of them, began to say—

"I think Emilia-sama has finally lost it, Rem," The girl with red hair said with a deadpan expression.

"Indeed, Nee-sama. Perhaps it is the stress of the Royal Selection," Rem replied sympathetically.

"Hey, I'm right here, you know!" Emilia exclaimed, waving her hands in front of their faces.

The girl with red hair raised an eyebrow. "Did you have a good sleep, Emilia-sama?"

"Wait?! Did you see—?"

"Your… chest-grabbing performance was quite enlightening,"

Subaru's face turned beet red. "I-I was just… I thought it was a dream!"

"Emilia-sama, it's best not to grab yourself like that. It's unseemly."

Emilia sighed heavily. 'This is so confusing. Why did I end up in this girl's body? And what's with all these…?'

Emilia looked around, trying to gather her thoughts. The room they were in was lavish, with ornate furniture and intricate tapestries. The morning light filtered through the grand windows, casting a warm glow on everything.

"Okay, okay," Emilia said, rubbing her temples. "First things first. What are your names?"

Ram and Rem exchanged a look of concern.

"Emilia-sama, are you feeling well?" Rem asked gently.

Emilia quickly explained, "I've lost a lot of my memories. That includes your names too. I know it sounds strange, but please, can you tell me?"

The twins looked skeptical at first, but then Rem stepped forward. "I am Rem, and this is my sister, Ram."

Ram gave a curt nod. "We serve you here at the mansion, Emilia-sama."

"Thank you, Rem, Ram," Emilia said, trying to sound as sincere as possible. "I appreciate your help. And, um, could you assist me in getting dressed?"

The twins exchanged another look, this one filled with a mixture of disbelief and concern.

"Of course, Emilia-sama," Rem said. "Please follow us."

Emilia followed the twins to a grand dressing room filled with elegant clothes. The awkwardness of the situation was palpable.

"Alright, Emilia-sama," Ram said, picking out a dress. "Let's get you changed."

Emilia gulped. "Um, okay. But, could you… turn around or something?"

Ram raised an eyebrow. "Emilia-sama, we've done this many times before."

"Yeah, but…" Emilia stammered, "I just feel… a bit weird today."

The twins didn't budge. They waited patiently as Emilia reluctantly began to undress.

"Okay, just… make it quick," Emilia said, feeling her cheeks burn. 'But damn! Getting dressed by two cute girls…every shut-in's fantasy!'

Rem helped Emilia into the dress, her hands moving with practiced ease. "This will look lovely on you, Emilia-sama."

"No, no, just normal stuff. Not so frilly."

"Okay, Emilia-sama."

Emilia squirmed, trying not to think too much about the situation. "Thanks, Rem."

"It's Ram,"

"Oh, sorry 'bout that."

Ram adjusted the final details, smoothing out any wrinkles. "There, all done. How do you feel?"

"Like I've just survived the most awkward experience of my life," Emilia muttered.

The twins exchanged a small smile. "You look perfect, Emilia-sama," Rem said softly.

Emilia smiled. "Alright. Let's get on with the day. And, um, thanks for the help."

Subaru began to explore the mansion, marveling at its sheer size. It was gigantic yet eerily empty, the kind of place that made you feel small and insignificant. Long corridors stretched endlessly, decorated with intricate tapestries and grand chandeliers that cast a soft glow on the polished floors. She wandered from room to room, each more opulent than the last. The dressing rooms were filled with luxurious garments, the bathhouse boasted marble tubs and ornate fixtures, the storage rooms were packed with various supplies, and the study was a treasure trove of ancient tomes and elegant furniture.

Despite her growing fatigue, there was so much to explore that Subaru couldn't stop herself. Eventually, she opened a random door, only to find herself in a huge library. Shelves upon shelves of books lined the walls, reaching up to the high ceiling. In the center of the room, perched on a ladder, was a small girl with a striking appearance.

Beatrice, as Subaru would later learn, had long, curly blond hair tied with pink ribbons and wore a pink dress that contrasted with her sharp, blue eyes. She looked down at Subaru with a mix of curiosity and disdain.

"Naive girl, here to give my friend, I suppose?"

"'Naive girl'?" Subaru mused, puzzled. "So this Emilia is supposed to be an idiot or something?"

Beatrice gave her a puzzled look before asking, "What are you talking about, I wonder?"

Subaru, trying to keep her cool, asked, "What's your name?"

The girl's expression turned stern. "You should already know my name, and you should stop asking stupid questions, I suppose."

Subaru sighed. "I've lost some of my memories and—"

Beatrice cut her off, her voice cold. "Don't speak nonsense here and waste my time, or I'll throw you out of the library, I suppose."

Before Subaru could respond, Puck appeared from behind her neck and floated towards Beatrice. The girl immediately beamed and began to cuddle the flying cat.

"Pucky!" she exclaimed with genuine affection.

Puck, equally enthusiastic, replied, "Betty! Long time no see!"

Beatrice nuzzled Puck, her previously stern demeanor melting away. "Pucky, you're as fluffy as ever, I suppose."

Puck purred contentedly. "And you're as cuddly as always, Betty."

Watching this bizarrely adorable exchange, Subaru felt an odd mix of amusement and confusion. Before she could voice her thoughts, Beatrice approached her and touched her hand. Instantly, an excruciating pain surged through her body, starting from her hand and radiating outward. It felt as if her very essence was being probed and dissected. She fell to her knees, clutching her head tightly.

"What did you do?" Subaru asked furiously, her voice trembling from the pain.

Beatrice frowned, her previous warmth replaced with a clinical curiosity. "You have a smell about you, and I had a hunch, I suppose."

Subaru's vision blurred as she struggled to comprehend the sensation. "What smell? What are you talking about?"

Beatrice was about to elaborate when a voice from the hallway interrupted them. It was one of the twins, Ram, calling out, "The lord of the mansion has returned, and it's time for lunch."

Puck, still floating near Beatrice, gave Subaru a sympathetic look. "We can discuss your memory loss with Roswaal. He might know what's going on."

Subaru shuddered. She hadn't exactly lost her memories; instead, she was not Emilia at all. What if this Roswaal saw through her deception?

As they left the library, Beatrice gave Puck one last affectionate squeeze. "See you later, Pucky. Don't be a stranger, I suppose."

Puck winked at her. "Wouldn't dream of it, Betty."

With the echoes of their nicknames lingering in the air, Subaru followed the twins and Puck down the long corridors. The silence was heavy, each step echoing ominously, amplifying her anxiety. She glanced out the windows, noting the pristine gardens and the bright, sunny sky—such a stark contrast to her turbulent thoughts. The enormity of the mansion now felt more like a looming presence than an exciting adventure, a reminder of how far she was from everything she knew.

Approaching the main hall, Subaru took a deep breath. She had nothing to lose... right?

Jester-Sama!

Subaru poked her chest. Despite being a girl for more than a day, she still couldn't help but feel the urge to do it. The fact that the maid—Ram, was it?—was looking at her like she was some sort of alien didn't stop her from poking her marshmallow-soft boobs.

"These are irresistible!" Subaru grinned, cheeks flushed with excitement.

"Nee-sama, Nee-sama, I think Emilia-sama is a mono."

"Rem, Rem, indeed Emilia-sama is a mono."

"Speak all you want," Subaru said, still shamelessly groping her own chest. "But the fact that mine are bigger than—"

"Oooh, what dooo we have heeere~" A new voice sounded from the doorway.

Subaru looked up to see a man with mismatched eyes, dressed in an eccentric outfit that screamed 'court jester' but with an oddly menacing vibe. His lips were painted, and his eyes gleamed with a mischievous light.

"A clown?" Subaru mused aloud. "So, he is going to entertain us while we eat?"

The clown looked bewildered, a chuckle escaping his lips.

"Rosewall-sama," the pink-headed maid said, "Emilia-sama has finally hit puberty." Subaru shot the maid a glare. The maid remained unfazed.

"Hoo?" The clown looked curious.

"Apparently, Emilia-sama has been groping her privates," Rem informed.

The jester smirked playfully. "Am I correct to assuuume I need to tell her the story of birds aaaand bees~?"

"Hah?" Puck, who was being cuddled by Beatrice, said, his little voice indignant. "Don't you try to corrupt my little daughter, Rosewall."

"Oi, oi!" Subaru looked angry. "I aaam right here!" She shot the maid another glare. The maid still remained unfazed. "And I just…hey, we don't need a clown here!"

The clown looked confused.

Rem explained, "Emilia-sama has lost her memories."

Subaru frowned, saying, "Why tell him? A jester?"

Ram disclosed, "He is the lord of this mansion."

"Oh…" Subaru looked shocked. "...sooorry 'bout that, we cool…dude?"

Rosewall grinned before abruptly putting his hand on her forehead. She gasped when she felt a tickling sensation wash over her body.

"What…was that?"

"Emilia-sama," Rosewall said, "you are experiencing Dissociative Identity Disorder."

"Wait, what?!"

"It means you think you are someone else."

Oh…so, he didn't understand that Subaru was lying about memory loss? Thank god!

"Okay! So now let's eat!" She grinned, but Rosewall grabbed her shoulders.

He said, "In order to get healed from this disease, you must go through the trials."

"Rosewall," Puck spoke in a cold—literally cold—tone. "Why would Lia go through the trials?"

"Yeah!" Subaru chirped in. "What trials? You mean court stuff? But why?!"

Rosewall's grin widened. "Weeeell, we don't need to do it now~!"

"Really?" Subaru let out a breath she was holding. "All right then, let's eat!"

Rosewall watched 'Emilia-sama' as she happily praised Rem's cooking while taunting Ram. Everything was going right according to the plan. Of course, he had expected his Shishō's potion to work perfectly. Yet, it still mesmerized him how beautiful her witchcraft was.

Rosewall's mind drifted back to two days ago…

"Emilia-saaamaaa~"

"Oh, Rosewall?"

"I hope I am not interrupting your studies."

"No, no. But covering so many years of history is reaaaly hard."

"Give your best!"

"Thank you!"

"So….is your Great Spirit here?"

"Puck? No. He is with Beatrice."

"I must say~, they reaaally like each other's company~."

"Now~now~ Emilia-sama, I have a way that can help you memorize the contents of these books eeeeasily."

"Really?"

"Yes, indeed."

"It would be reaaally nice to finish these books… What is the way?"

Back in the present, in his dining room, Rosewall smirked. The potion made with the hair of the Great Sage himself. There are various dimensions, and each of them has a unique Great Sage. By making Emilia-sama drink the potion, he had successfully summoned a Great Sage. But why Emilia-sama?

"I would drink it, Shishō! I will gladly—"

"Ah, my dear pupil, you see, the vessel has to have elf blood."

"I…see."

"Don't be so disappointed, Rosewall-kun. The vessel will die anyway. Do you really want to leave me?"

Rosewall's eyes, back in the present, gleamed. "No I don't, Shishō. No I don't."

"Oi, Ros-chi!" The Great Sage, who was now inhabiting Emilia-sama's body, called him. "You there?"

"Why, of cooourse, Emilia-sama."

"Yeah, you kinda' spaced out. Aaanyway, so—"

'Soon, you will be back, Shishō…'

o—O—o

Emilia woke up feeling her hands being... restrained. She blinked, trying to clear her blurry vision. Slowly, she began to see clearly. It was a dark room...or place...a void? She had no words to describe this place. There were countless stardust particles dancing in the vast emptiness. Emilia tried to free her hands but failed to do so. These ropes were quite strong.

"Puck?" She tried to summon her contracted Great Spirit. Silence answered her. "Hello?"

Her mind raced. Why would someone trap her here? She was on her way back to the palace when that blonde girl...

Emilia tried to stand up but failed to do that too. Her legs were restrained as well.

"Hello?" She called out into the void. "Anybody?"

Silence once more. Not even her own echo was heard.

"Hello?" She tried again. Nothing.

Emilia gritted her teeth in frustration. The why or who was not her main concern now. She needed to get back.

"El Borafo!" She chanted, hoping for her ice magic to work.

Nothing?

Emilia tried once more. "Al Borafo!"

Nothing.

Why?!

"El Jomio!" "Al Jomio!" "Al Tandao!" "Al Shitto!"

None of her spells worked.

"Why?!" She yelled at particularly nobody. "Pleaaaase help me!"

Silence was not what answered her this time...

"You... shouldn't...speak...like...that..."

What answered her was a cold voice full of hatred and rage.

"W-who?" Emilia mustered all her courage to speak.

"It...doesn't...concern...you...for...you...have been...caged...for...eternity..."

Emilia froze.

"You...should...feel...honored...wretched...girl...for...my...Fūgel...inhabitates...your...body..."

"M-my body?"

"Soon...we...shall...reunite...and...Fūgel...will...free...me..."

The voice faded.

"N-no!" Emilia yelled. "Wait...!"

Silence.

"P-please wait..." She sobbed in the vast void.

o—O—o

Subaru woke up, completely soaked in sweat. She breathed heavily, trying to clear her mind.

"W-what was that?" she asked herself. "It felt so real..."

She looked outside the window where the moon could be seen between clouds.

"Must be a nightmare," with a yawn, she closed her eyes, grabbing her breasts and pressing gently with a smile, completely unaware of the horrors awaiting her.

Chapter 8: Chapter 08

Chapter Text

Villagers

In the grand hall of the Council of the Great Sage, an aura of solemnity filled the air. Ornate tapestries depicting the history of Lugnica adorned the walls, and a massive chandelier cast a warm, golden light over the room. Seated around a long, polished table were the councilmen, a group of venerable old men whose wisdom and experience were unparalleled in the kingdom. Reinhard van Astrea, the Sword Saint, stood before them, his posture straight and respectful.

Councilman Noa, a man with a long white beard and piercing blue eyes, was the first to speak. "Sir Reinhard, we have summoned you here today to discuss the state of peace and order in the capital. How are things faring under your watch?"

Reinhard inclined his head slightly. "The capital remains secure, Councilman Noa. Crime rates are at an all-time low, and our patrols are diligent. The people can go about their daily lives without fear."

Councilman Garf, a stout man with a serious expression, nodded approvingly. "Your efforts are commendable, Sword Saint. However, there is another matter we must discuss. It has come to our attention that you were seen with the King candidate Emilia, the half-elf, in the slums. Can you explain this?"

Reinhard's expression became more guarded, but he knew he had to answer. "Indeed, I was with Lady Emilia. She had lost her insignia, and we were searching for it."

Councilman Noa leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Lost her insignia? In the slums? That seems rather careless for a King candidate. What exactly transpired?"

Reinhard took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. "Lady Emilia was deeply concerned about the loss of her insignia. It is a vital symbol of her candidacy, as you know. In her desperation, she ventured into the slums, fearing that it had been stolen or misplaced there."

Councilman Garf frowned. "And how did you come to be involved?"

"She requested my assistance," Reinhard replied. "Given the importance of the insignia, I could not refuse."

The councilmen exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable. Councilman Noa spoke again, his tone more probing. "And what about the incident with the old woman? We've heard troubling reports."

Reinhard hesitated, then decided that honesty was the best course. "Lady Emilia believed that a woman in the slums, whom she suspected to be the infamous Elsa the Bowel Hunter in disguise, was a threat. She feared that this woman would harm those around her."

Councilman Garf's eyes widened slightly. "The Bowel Hunter? That is a grave accusation. Was there any truth to her suspicions?"

Reinhard shook his head. "It appears she was mistaken. The woman was not who Lady Emilia thought she was. It seems... she may have been imagining things."

A murmur ran through the council. Councilman Noa stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Imagining things, you say? That is quite concerning."

Reinhard could sense where this was leading. "Lady Emilia was under a great deal of stress. The loss of the insignia, coupled with the pressures of her candidacy, could have led to her misjudgment."

The councilmen conferred in hushed tones for a moment before Councilman Garf spoke again. "If Lady Emilia's mental state is indeed fragile, it raises questions about her suitability for the throne. Should she exhibit further signs of instability, we must consider the ramifications for the kingdom."

Reinhard's heart sank. "Lady Emilia is a kind and capable leader. She has the potential to bring great change to Lugnica. I urge you to consider her merits alongside any concerns."

Councilman Noa nodded slowly. "Your righteousness is noted, Sword Saint. However, we must act in the best interest of the kingdom. We will continue to observe her closely. Should she demonstrate any further signs of mental instability, we will have no choice but to reconsider her candidacy."

Reinhard bowed his head in acknowledgment. "I understand, Councilmen. Thank you for your time and consideration."

As he left the grand hall, Reinhard couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in his chest. The fate of the kingdom hung in the balance, and he could only hope that Lady Emilia would find the strength to prove her worthiness beyond any doubt.

o—O—o

Subaru emerged from the bathroom, her skin flushed and dewy from the hot shower. The sensation of the warm water cascading over her new body was still a novelty she relished. She couldn't help but grin, giving her crotch a playful pat, giggling perversely. The whole experience of being in a female body was bizarre yet amusing.

Just then, Ram appeared in the hallway, her expression as stern as ever. "Were you groping your own privates, Emilia-sama?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Subaru blinked, then burst into laughter. "Seriously? That's the first thing you say to me?"

Ram crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "Well, it's not every day we see our lady fondling herself in the hallway."

"Touché," Subaru admitted, smirking. "But you know, these are just too irresistible."

"Nee-sama, nee-sama," Rem appeared beside her sister, eyes wide. "I think Emilia-sama has gone mad."

"Rem, Rem," Ram responded, shaking her head. "Indeed, Emilia-sama has lost it."

"Hey, hey!" Subaru protested, throwing her hands up in mock indignation. "I'm right here! And for the record, I'm not mad. Just... curious."

Ram sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Curious or not, please conduct yourself with more decorum, Emilia-sama. We have a reputation to uphold."

"Yeah, yeah, Miss Prim and Proper," Subaru teased, rolling her eyes. "Let's get some breakfast. I'm starving."

The dining room was filled with the mouth-watering aromas of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon. The table was laden with an array of dishes: fluffy scrambled eggs, juicy sausages, golden pancakes, and an assortment of fruits. Subaru's stomach growled in anticipation.

Rosewall, with his eccentric attire and ever-present smirk, sat at the head of the table. His mismatched eyes gleamed with amusement as he observed Subaru.

"Good mooorning, Emilia-samaaaa," he greeted, his voice lilting. "I trust you had a pleasant shoooower?"

Subaru gave him a cheeky grin. "The best, thanks. And by the way, you're quite the clown. Entertain us while we eat, will you?"

Rosewall chuckled, shaking his head. "Always the joker, I see. But on a moooore serious note, I have a task for you tooooday."

Subaru raised an eyebrow, her fork halfway to her mouth. "Oh? What's that?"

"I'd like you to visit the village and build a stroooonger relatiooonship with the civiliaaaans," Rosewall said, his tone becoming more serious.

Subaru frowned, clearly reluctant. "Why do I need to do that? Can't we just send Rem or Ram?"

Puck, who was floating lazily by her side, chimed in. "Lia, it's a good idea. You've been cooped up in this mansion for too long. It'll do you good to get some fresh air and meet the people."

'But—"

"Naive Girl," Beatrice interjected. "If you go away, I'll get some time to spend with my best friend!" Puck giggled as she cuddled him.

Subaru sighed, clearly not thrilled with the idea. "Fine, fine. I'll go."

After finishing her breakfast, Subaru prepared to leave for the village, accompanied by Rem. She pulled her pointy-eared hoodie over her head, trying to avoid drawing too much attention.

"Hey, Rem," she said as they neared the village. "I…uh…want to interact with the villagers by myself."

Rem give her a questioning look.

"Basically, I want you to stay away from me so that I…uh…"

"Emilia-sama," Rem said, her voice gentle but firm, "you shouldn't be alone. Let me stay with you."

"I'll be fine, Rem," Subaru insisted, waving her off. "Just do the shopping by yourself. I'll stay out of trouble, I promise."

Reluctantly, Rem nodded and went on her way. Subaru, meanwhile, found a huge Banyan tree and hid behind it, avoiding the prying eyes of the villagers. She felt a pang of discomfort as she watched happy families going about their day.

The village was bustling with activity. It was a picturesque place, with cobblestone streets winding between quaint cottages. Flower boxes adorned windowsills, and the sound of children playing mingled with the chatter of adults. Vendors called out their wares, and the aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air. It was idyllic, the kind of place that felt like it was plucked from a fairy tale.

Subaru felt a pang of envy and sorrow. The sight of a boy playing with lambs, his father and mother tending to the cows nearby, brought a flood of painful memories. Subaru's mind drifted back to her life as Subaru Natsuki. Her parents had died in a car accident, and it was all her fault. She had distracted her father, who was driving, causing the fatal crash. She was so unlucky that she did not die. The guilt had haunted her ever since.

A wave of panic washed over her, making it hard to breathe. Her chest felt heavy—not from her new, ample bosom, but from the crushing weight of her past. The suffocation was unbearable, and her vision blurred as tears welled up in her eyes. "Can't…b-breathe…" She clutched her throat, trying to breathe.

"Hey!" A voice snapped her out of her panic attack. Subaru's eyes widened, startled, and turned to see a little blonde girl with wide, curious eyes. "Are you okay, nee-san?"

"I-I'm fine," Subaru stuttered, still trying not to lose her consciousness and to compose herself. "What's your name?"

"I'm Petra!" the girl chirped, smiling brightly.

Subaru did her best to hide her discomfort about the whole panic attack episode. Her breathing had returned to normal, but the residual tightness in her chest lingered. She noticed the children around her were curious, yet nervous about her presence. It wasn't surprising—silver-haired half-elves weren't exactly viewed favourably in Lugnica.

"Is everything okay, Miss?" one of the older boys asked, his wide eyes filled with concern.

Subaru forced a smile. "Yes, I'm fine. Just had a little scare, that's all."

The children exchanged uncertain glances, their curiosity piqued by her unusual appearance. However, despite their initial hesitation, they began to warm up to her. One brave little girl, her hair tied up in pigtails, stepped forward.

"Your hair is so pretty," she said, her voice filled with awe. "Like moonlight!"

Subaru chuckled softly, genuinely touched. "Thank you. What's your name?"

"Clara," the girl replied, smiling shyly.

"Well, Clara, and everyone else," Subaru said, addressing the group, "how about we play a game?"

The children's eyes lit up with excitement. Slowly but surely, Subaru began to feel more at ease. The initial awkwardness faded as they started to play. Laughter echoed around them as they chased each other and played simple games.

"You can call me Lia-nee-chan," Subaru said, her heart warming at the sound of their giggles.

"Lia-nee-chan! Lia-nee-chan!" the children chanted, their voices a joyful chorus.

"Alright, everyone, let's start with some exercises!" Subaru announced, clapping her hands together. "We need to get those muscles moving!"

The children gathered around her, eager to follow her lead. Subaru started with some basic stretches, demonstrating each move with exaggerated gestures to keep the kids entertained.

"Reach for the sky!" she instructed, lifting her arms high above her head. "Now, touch your toes!"

The children giggled as they tried to mimic her movements, some more successfully than others. Subaru couldn't help but laugh along with them, the exercise already helping to lift her spirits.

"Let's do some jumping jacks!" Subaru said, bouncing up and down. "One, two, three, four!"

The kids followed her lead, their laughter echoing through the village square. It was a simple activity, but it brought a sense of normalcy and joy that Subaru desperately needed.

"Now, who here has a special talent?" Subaru asked, looking around at the group. "Anyone want to show off their skills?"

One boy raised his hand shyly. "I can do a handstand."

"That's amazing!" Subaru exclaimed. "Show us!"

The boy grinned and flipped himself upside down, balancing on his hands with surprising ease. The other children clapped and cheered, and Subaru joined in enthusiastically.

"Great job! Anyone else?" she asked.

A little girl stepped forward, holding a piece of string. "I can do a cat's cradle."

Subaru watched as the girl deftly manipulated the string into intricate patterns, her fingers moving with practiced precision. "That's fantastic! You're all so talented."

As they continued to play and show off their skills, Subaru made a point to ask each child about their future goals.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" she asked a boy who had just shown off his impressive cartwheel.

"I want to be a knight!" he declared, puffing out his chest proudly.

"That's a noble dream," Subaru said, nodding. "Keep working hard and you might just achieve it."

She turned to another girl who was braiding flowers into a crown. "And what about you?"

"I want to be a gardener, like my mama," the girl said with a shy smile.

"That's wonderful," Subaru replied warmly. "Gardens bring so much beauty into the world."

The conversations continued, each child's dream a precious glimpse into their future. Subaru felt a growing sense of connection with these children, their innocence and optimism a balm for her troubled heart.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a golden hue over the village, Subaru led the children in a final series of fun exercises. They stretched their arms and legs, hopped around, and finally, Subaru had them strike a triumphant pose.

"Victory...!" she shouted, pumping her fist in the air.

"Victory!" the children echoed, mimicking her pose with enthusiastic grins.

Time flew by, and the twilight sky painted the village in hues of orange and pink. The sounds of the villagers winding down their day mixed with the children's laughter. Rem approached, her expression softening as she watched Subaru interact with the kids.

"Emilia-sama," Rem called gently, "it's time for us to return."

The children's faces fell, their disappointment evident. Subaru quickly crouched down to their level, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

"Don't worry," she reassured them. "I'll come back again. We'll have more fun next time, I promise."

The children reluctantly let her go, waving and calling out their goodbyes as Subaru and Rem began to walk back to the mansion.

As Subaru and Rem were making their way back to the mansion, the sounds of hurried footsteps and excited chatter reached their ears. Turning around, Subaru saw the group of children running towards them, their faces lit up with urgency. In their arms, they carried a small, bald puppy. Its fur had been patchy and scruffy, and it looked injured and in pain.

"Lia-nee-chan! Lia-nee-chan!" Clara called out, her eyes wide with worry. "We found this puppy in the woods! It's hurt really bad. Can you help it? We heard you can heal people!"

Subaru's heart went out to the little creature, but she felt a pang of anxiety. Healing magic wasn't her forte. She knelt down to get a closer look at the puppy, whose big, soulful eyes stared up at her, full of pain and confusion.

"Uh, well," Subaru stammered, scratching her head awkwardly. "I'm really sorry, but I can't heal anyone right now because I'm...uh...sick?"

The children looked crestfallen, their hopeful expressions fading. Just then, Rem stepped forward, her gentle demeanor calming the situation.

"I can help the puppy," Rem said softly, kneeling beside Subaru. "I have healing magic."

The children's faces brightened with renewed hope. Rem extended her hands over the puppy, her fingers glowing with a soft, blue light. Subaru watched in awe as Rem's healing magic began to work. The puppy's wounds started to close, its whimpers of pain quieting down.

Subaru, feeling a surge of affection for the little creature, gently petted its head. "There you go, little guy. You're going to be okay."

However, the puppy, still disoriented and scared, suddenly snapped its jaws and bit down on Subaru's arm. She yelped in pain and surprise, quickly pulling her hand back.

"Ouch! Hey, that hurt!" Subaru exclaimed, rubbing her arm.

Rem looked at her with concern. "Let me heal that for you, Emilia-sama."

Subaru nodded, wincing as Rem's magic enveloped her arm, soothing the pain and closing the bite marks. "Thanks, Rem. I guess the little guy was just scared."

The children, relieved to see the puppy getting better, gathered around Subaru and Rem with wide eyes and relieved smiles.

"Thank you, Lia-nee-chan! Thank you, Rem-san!" Clara said, her face beaming with gratitude.

Subaru laughed, though still rubbing her arm where the puppy had bitten her. "No problem, Clara. Just make sure to be gentle with him, okay? He's been through a lot."

One of the older boys, who had been holding the puppy, cradled it carefully. "We'll take good care of him, Lia-nee-chan. We promise."

Rem finished her healing spell and stood up, dusting off her skirt. "He should be fine now, but keep an eye on him and make sure he gets plenty of rest and good food."

Subaru and Rem resumed their walk back to the mansion, but Subaru couldn't help but glance back at the children and the puppy, her heart swelling with a mix of emotions. The village had shown her a sense of community and warmth she hadn't felt in a long time.

The road back was lined with lush green trees, their leaves rustling gently in the evening breeze. The setting sun cast long shadows across the path, creating a picturesque scene that felt almost magical. Birds chirped softly, returning to their nests for the night, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers.

"Rem," Subaru said, breaking the comfortable silence. "Do you think... I mean, am I really making a difference here?"

Rem looked at her with a gentle smile. "You are, Lia-sama. The villagers are starting to see you for who you truly are, beyond the prejudices. And the children adore you."

Subaru smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "Thank you, Rem. That means a lot."

As they approached the mansion, its grand structure looming ahead, Subaru felt a sense of accomplishment. The day's events had been a small step, but an important one in building relationships with the villagers and proving her worth.

Upon entering the mansion, Subaru felt a renewed sense of purpose. She knew that the road ahead would be challenging, but with the support of her friends and the determination she had found within herself, she felt ready to face whatever came next. She was no longer just Subaru Natsuki, the lost and broken boy from another world. She was Emilia, a candidate for the throne, and she was ready to fight for her future.

Death Once More

Subaru woke up drenched in sweat, her chest heaving as though she'd run a marathon. Her silver hair clung to her forehead, damp from the humidity in the room. Wide, frightened eyes—almost violet in hue—darted around the dimly lit space. Moonlight seeped through the curtains, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Her heart raced, pounding so violently in her chest she thought it might burst.

'I can't move.'

Panic set in. Her limbs felt like lead, completely unresponsive to her frantic commands. She tried to shift, to even twitch a finger, but her body was frozen in place. Subaru's mind screamed at her legs, her arms—'do something'—but it was useless. The familiar weight of sleep paralysis had her trapped again, like a prisoner in her own skin.

Her breathing grew shallow. Every second stretched into what felt like minutes, each passing moment more torturous than the last.

Suddenly, the door at the far end of her room creaked open.

Subaru's stomach dropped. Her throat constricted. She couldn't call for help. The door swung wider, and a tall, dark silhouette stood in the doorway, its form shadowed against the dim light from the hallway. The figure didn't move at first. It just...stood there, watching.

'No. No, no, no, no!'

Her mind screamed at her to get up. To run. To hide. But her body refused to cooperate. She was completely helpless, pinned beneath the weight of terror.

'Puck? Beako? Rem-Rin? Ram-chi? Ros-chi?' she called out in her head, desperately willing someone—anyone—to hear her. But no one came. The figure at the door began to move. Slow, deliberate steps echoed in the silence of her room. Each footfall sent icy chills down her spine.

Subaru's breath hitched, her heartbeat quickening as the figure crept closer and closer. She could make out its form now—a looming, shadowy figure with broad shoulders and a menacing presence. The silhouette was impossibly tall, its face obscured in darkness.

She tried to scream, but no sound came out. Her voice, her strength, everything was gone. All she could do was watch as the figure approached, its steps slow but steady, deliberate as if it had all the time in the world to reach her.

And then, as suddenly as the paralysis had taken hold, it broke. Subaru gasped, sitting bolt upright in bed, her heart thudding in her ears. She clutched the bed sheets in her fists, panting, her wide eyes darting around the room.

"H-ha-ha," she let out a shaky laugh, her voice trembling. "It was just a dream… Just a dream..." Her voice was a whisper, almost as if she was trying to convince herself. Her shoulders sagged in relief as the tension slowly drained from her body.

She had been through this before. Sleep paralysis. Ever since her parents had died in that horrible car crash, she'd been plagued by it. Every time, it felt the same—terrifying and suffocating. And each time, it left her rattled, no matter how many times it happened. It never stopped being horrifying.

But this time, something felt off.

The air in the room seemed to thicken again. Subaru froze, her body instinctively tensing once more. Something wasn't right. She glanced to the side, towards the shadow that should've been empty—

And there it was.

A figure stood by her bedside.

Her blood ran cold. The same dark silhouette she had just seen in her nightmare. But this was no dream. The figure didn't belong in her waking world. It was real.

She barely had time to react before the figure lunged. Its hands—cold, rough—clamped around her head with an iron grip.

Subaru's scream was cut off by the sudden, violent twist of her neck.

Snap.

Her vision blurred, darkness closing in around her as the pain—sharp and instantaneous—overwhelmed her senses. In that instant, she realized what had just happened.

And just like that, Subaru died once more.

It was eight in the morning, and Ram made her way down the quiet hallway toward Emilia-sama's room. A silver tray balanced in her hands, holding a neat arrangement of biscuits and tea. Normally, the half-elf would already be awake by now—around seven, perhaps eight at the latest. But today, the room remained eerily silent.

"What a sore loser," Ram muttered under her breath, her pink hair swaying as she shook her head. She had no deep fondness for Emilia, though she respected Roswaal-sama's decision to sponsor the girl. It was strategic, if not a bit reckless. But the truth was, yesterday had been a grueling day for the half-elf. Losing the insignia and spending the entire day scouring every inch of the kingdom had clearly taken its toll on her.

Pausing in front of the heavy wooden door, Ram raised her hand to knock.

Then she heard it.

A scream—piercing, unnatural—ripped through the stillness of the mansion. Ram's breath hitched. Her heart leaped into her throat. The tray clattered to the floor, the sound drowned by the violent wail coming from within the room. For a moment, Ram stood frozen, her sharp instincts on high alert. What in the world was happening?

She slammed the door open and rushed inside, her eyes scanning the dimly lit room in a panic.

There, on the bed, was Emilia. Her silver hair—once so pristine—was now matted and wild, sticking to her pale skin as she convulsed violently beneath the sheets. Her violet eyes, usually gentle, were wide open, clouded over with fear and madness. Her mouth hung open in a scream so guttural, so animalistic, it barely sounded human.

Emilia's body thrashed, her delicate limbs jerking as if possessed by some unseen force. Her white nightgown twisted and bunched around her legs, her fingers clawing at the sheets with such ferocity that Ram thought she might tear them apart.

"Emilia-sama!" Ram gasped, rushing forward, unsure of what to do.

The sight of Emilia writhing and screeching sent a chill down Ram's spine. She hesitated for a second before reaching out to grab Emilia's wrist, hoping to calm her down. But the moment her fingers brushed Emilia's arm, the half-elf let out a guttural snarl and lashed out, her nails raking across Ram's skin with surprising force.

Ram yelped, stumbling back, clutching her bleeding hand. She stared at the crimson streaks on her pale skin, shock numbing her pain.

What is happening?* she thought, her mind racing. Emilia-sama was no fighter—she wasn't violent, not like this. But this...this was something else entirely. It was like she wasn't even herself.

Before Ram could figure out her next move, a small, ethereal light began to glow from Emilia's necklace. A chilling wind swept through the room as Puck emerged, his small form hovering above the bed. But there was no warmth, no playfulness in his eyes this time. Instead, his eyes narrowed, glowing with a dangerous, icy blue light.

"What. Did. You. Do?"

The words, though softly spoken, were laced with a murderous edge. Ram's blood turned to ice. Puck's aura filled the room, suffocating and cold. Gone was the friendly, lighthearted spirit she had grown used to. This was something darker, something far more dangerous—the Beast of Destruction.

"I-I didn't…" Ram stammered, instinctively stepping back, her body tense with fear. Puck's normally small and adorable form began to grow, his body swelling with anger. A foot taller. Then another foot.

"Did you curse her?" Puck growled, his voice low and menacing. His eyes burned with a fury so intense that it felt like they were boring straight into Ram's soul. "Did you poison her?"

Ram's breath hitched as she stumbled back again, her instincts screaming at her to run, to flee from the deadly aura that now filled the room. Yet her legs refused to obey. She was frozen, rooted in place by fear. This was no ordinary spirit. This was a force of nature, a being capable of unfathomable destruction. And it was directed entirely at her.

Just then, a soft but firm voice cut through the tension.

"Bucky."

Ram turned, her heart still pounding, to see Beatrice standing in the doorway, her small figure calm and composed. Behind her, Rem entered, her face a mask of concern. Beatrice, with her drill-like blonde curls and those large, tired eyes, approached the bed with a confident stride.

As if sensing her presence, Emilia's convulsions began to slow. Beatrice reached out and touched Emilia's forehead, her mana flowing gently into the half-elf's body. Slowly, Emilia's screams faded into whimpers, her body relaxing as the spirit's calming energy soothed her.

"This naïve brat of yours has no curse on her," Beatrice said, her tone as sharp as ever, though her eyes softened as she glanced back at Puck. Then, she shot Ram a cold glare. "And this Oni with her mediocre knowledge cannot do anything like this, in fact."

Puck, though still tense, began to shrink back down to his original size, his icy rage simmering beneath the surface. He floated over to Beatrice, his gaze never leaving Emilia's still form.

"What may have happened to Emilia?" he asked quietly, his voice trembling with concern now that the immediate danger had passed.

Beatrice studied Emilia for a long moment, her small fingers brushing gently across the half-elf's pale cheek.

"I don't know,"
