The Purl of My Life

Summary:

Post-Canon where Katsuki and Izuku are in love and sweaters are made.

Notes:

Just an extremely self-indulgent, fluffy AU where BKDK live together and Izuku knits bc I find it soothing and must project my interests onto my poor little meow meow. Also I wrote this before the official ending came out so it's not necessarily canon-compliant but *insert that one Link meme* its my fic and i get to decide what happens in it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

This whole mess started with a pair of socks.

Katsuki grunted as he blasted through the air. He felt the tough leather of his boot explode outwards and peel away from his left foot. The wind was cool against this now-exposed socked foot. He groaned and twisted in the air, bringing his hands together and firing off an AP Shot. The villain, who had been leveling buildings and causing general havoc, went down with a thud against the pavement.

Katsuki landed next to him. The field was silent. He looked around. Concerned citizens (extras being dumbasses) murmured amongst themselves as Katsuki leaned down and slapped a pair of quirk-canceling handcuffs around the dick ass villain’s wrists. He hauled the dazed man to his feet and dragged him to the waiting police cars. One stepped forward and took the villain from his hands, nodding at Katsuki’s grunt of acknowledgment.

“Nice sock,” the officer said. Katsuki rolled his eyes and turned away, intent on finding the shattered remains of his boot and blasting back to the agency.

He was cut off by a horde of reporters jabbering around him. Katsuki glared ahead, only half-listening to the babble around him. He didn’t want to be here.

Katuski was actually supposed to have finished patrol an hour ago. The until recently destructive idiot had begun causing chaos 61 minutes ago. All Katsuki wanted to do was go to the agency, take a quick shower, and go home.

One voice cut through the crowd. Katuski looked over at the reporter. They pushed their way to the front of the crowd. Something in their face made Katsuki hold back on snarling some asshole reply. Maybe it was the shining green of their eyes, the cut of their messy hair. It wasn’t all that impressive, but it still gave Katsuki pause.

“I like your sock, Dynamight!” Katsuki let a surprised puff of air escape through his nostrils.

“Er, thanks I guess.” He replied. “My partner made ‘em for me. Good luck charm.” The sea of vultures more commonly known as reporters went dead silent before erupting into loud and jarring questions. Katsuki blinked, turned, and blasted off. He really wanted to go home.

Katsuki finally made it back to their apartment with only minimal jeering from Kirishima and Kaminari. After fielding their taunts of him being whipped and a simp with only 2 explosions (Katsuki was rather proud of his restraint) he was able to get home otherwise unbothered.

He swung the door open and stepped through, removing his emergency running shoes (his destroyed boots were at the agency) and locking the door behind him.

“‘m home,” he called into the apartment. The lights were mostly off except for in their living room area. Katusk recognized it as the warm flicker of the fairy lights around the TV. Despite how much he’d grumbled and groaned about putting them up under direction, he found that it was soothing. It was nice to come home to their gentle light instead of the blaring fluorescence of the big light.

The smell of something delicious hit Katsuki’s nose just as he crossed into the kitchen area. It was warm and spicy. He grinned and shed his outer layers, arriving at their little table in his tank top, sweats, and socks.

Despite being a highly ranked hero, he and Izuku still used their crappy furniture from when they’d first moved out. Katsuki had just debuted when he’d bought the thing and it had lasted through two moves, countless class meetups, and even a villain crashing through their living room. He’d grown oddly attached to that dinky little table with its wobbly and uneven legs and the scorch mark from when he’d gotten too drunk once and activated his quirk when Kaminari shocked him by accident.

There was a plate covered with aluminum foil waiting for him, a cheery mint green sticky note stuck to the top. Katsuki sat down at the table with a relieved groan and plucked the note from its resting place. No matter how often this happened, the familiar handwriting still left him feeling warm all over.

Hi Kacchan!
Hope you had a good day at work today! If you want seconds, there’s more in the fridge. I need to go lay down now (dizzy) and I might be asleep by the time you get home. If I am, I just want you to know that I love you!!
Love,
Deku :3

Katsuki snorted. “Shitty nerd,” he said to himself before setting the note aside and peeling back the foil.

The curry on the plate was steamy and warm. Katsuki said his thanks quietly and dug in. Izuku, despite what many people believed, was a fantastic cook. He’d needed to cook for himself at a young age when his mother had worked on the night shift. Katsuki had been pleasantly surprised the first night they’d moved in together. After all these years, Izuku still found ways to surprise him.

Meal eaten and dishes washed, Katsuki dragged himself into the shower and rinsed the day off of his body. He groaned as the water hit his aching muscles and let himself bask in the feeling of relief.

Katsuki dressed himself and tossed his laundry into their hamper, taking a moment to separate his socks and put them aside. Wool and nitroglycerin somehow mix better than wool and the washing machine, and Katsuki wouldn’t take the chance of incurring Izuku’s wrath (read: Izuku’s pout at Katsuki accidentally destroying another pair) if he fucked up another pair of handmade socks.

Laundry safely disposed of (a lesson learned the hard way), Katsuki walked towards their shared bed. He narrowly avoided tripping over Izuku’s cane, which had either been haphazardly flung to the floor or had fallen from its normal perch. Katsuki made a mental note to deal with it in the morning and flopped onto his side of the bed, letting out a wheezing noise of relief.
The lump on the other side of the bed wiggled and Katsuki shifted, pulling the cocoon of blankets closer to him. His arm wound around Izuku’s waist and he buried his head against the other’s shoulder. The cocoon shifted as Izuku tried to look at him, having been woken up by his entry into the bed.

“Welcome home, Kacchan,” Izuku whispered, falling back asleep before he heard Katsuki’s reply. Katsuki just buried his head further into Izuku’s space, pressing a kiss to his shoulder before following his partner into sleep.

Katsuki and Izuku had a routine of sorts on their days off. Since Izuku worked as an independent contractor for quirk analysis, he was able to work whenever he wanted. He always liked taking the day off when Katsuki did unless there was no other choice.

Whoever woke up first would cook breakfast. The other would clean up after. If it was a stretch of days that they had off, the two would spend the first day just lounging as a ‘recovery day’. The subsequent days off they spent doing mundane things like going to the store, reading, taking walks, or looking at dogs on the internet. If Katsuki ever had a Thursday off - which he has not yet but hopes to soon - he’d accompany Izuku to his knitting group.

It was kind of a funny amalgamation of people. You’d have your expected Grandma-types, a few high schoolers, former hero Deku (which apparently no one in his knitting group realized - despite speaking at length about him during one of their discussions - to Izuku’s eternal amusement), a few goths, and ironically enough Momo Yaoyorozu. Yaoyorozu had actually been the person to introduce Izuku to knitting.

After the war was over and Shigaraki was defeated, Izuku’s wounds had been bad enough that he’d never be able to be a hero again without serious detriment to his well being. Between the traumatic brain injury, spinal fracture, going into shock, and subsequent chronic pneumonia and weakened immune system, it was honestly kind of a miracle Izuku survived. But he did.
His recovery process was long and arduous, and parts of it were still going on. He’d needed to relearn how to do everything, even stuff like brushing his teeth. Izuku struggled to relearn things involving fine motor skills. Part of that was because of his hands. They’d been through the wringer and he’d dealt with pain and decreased feeling in them since the first UA Sports Festival.
According to one exhausted doctor, it was a miracle Izuku was even able to use his hands at all.

An off-handed comment by a nurse, heard in the vicinity of one of Izuku’s many occupational therapists, had gotten them on the warpath of him learning how to knit as a way to help him get control over his fine motor skills once again. Yaoyorozu had been a life-saver in that respect.

Yaoyorozu had been taught to knit as part of her ‘rich girl, high society’ training and, luckily, she’d enjoyed it immensely. She’d come and sit with Izuku and help him struggle through the motions until he’d gotten the hang of it. Then, she’d just come to hang out with him, knit stuff, and spill the most scalding of tea regarding society and their classmates. Katsuki had been present during one of their gossip sessions - it was brutal and left no one untouched. It was kind of scary to watch, actually.

Katsuki was the last to wake up today, which meant he opened his eyes to an empty bed and the delectable smell of brewing coffee coming from their kitchen. Still half-asleep, the blonde man followed his nose to its source and ran into Izuku’s back. The man in question spun around with a grin.

“Kacchan! You’re awake!” Katsuki hummed in reply and sank into Izuku’s one-armed embrace. His own hands came up and wrapped gently around the other man’s waist. Izuku gripped him tight, his free hand fisting in the material of his shirt. After a moment, the two pulled away from each other. Izuku pecked his cheek and turned back to the stove. Katsuki flushed and turned to the side, shuffling past Izuku to the coffee pot.

By now the two men knew how to make each other’s coffee. Two mugs were filled, one with steaming coffee and the other poured over ice, and Katsuki departed the kitchen to set up the table. He helped Izuku carry the dishes over to their table and the two began to eat.

It was quiet as they ate, but not uncomfortably so. In Katsuki’s words, meals were for eating, not for shit-talking. The world around them began to wake up. Noise of the city filtered in from the open window. The coffee machine beeped quietly twice. Soft music played in the background as it so often did when Izuku was the one to cook breakfast. As the two men finished eating, they easily lapsed into what Izuku had dubbed ‘Drink the coffee, spill the tea’ time. It was a silly name, but important all the same.

‘Drink the coffee, spill the tea’ was the time of day after breakfast but before they finished their coffee where Katsuki and Izuku would catch up with each other regarding their respective times at work and during the days they didn’t see each other. It was, honestly, one of Katsuki’s favorite times of the day. Sometimes, neither of them had all that much to talk about, and others required multiple cups of coffee to get through. But it was time that they got to spend with each other without a list of things to do or people to see.

“How’d patrol go yesterday, Kacchan?” Izuku tilted his head in question. Katsuki’s chest made a little rumbling noise before he spoke.

“Fine, I guess. But this one fucker decided to start shit deadass one minute before my shift was up.” Izuku gave him a sympathetic little pout and Katsuki felt vindicated. “Stopped him eventually, but not before the asshole blew up a city block and took my fuckin’ boot with him.”

“Yikes.”

“Exactly. This fuckin’ reporter at the scene had the audacity to comment on my sock, which caused all the vultures to go into a fuckin’ feeding frenzy.” Katsuki groaned at the memory. “How was your day? Did you go to your knittin’ group?” Izuku nodded with a smile.

“Dotty is working on a lace patterning shawl and I’m pretty sure I heard some death threats to her yarn. She decided to use mohair, which she hates, so I definitely get her frustration.”

“Why the fuck’s she using mohair if she hates it?” Izuku shrugged.

“Maybe it’s a gift? Anyways, they all say hi.” Katsuki huffed a little laugh.

The ladies in Izuku’s knitting group adored Katsuki for some reason. Of course, they had no idea that he was actually the Number Five Pro Hero. They all knew him as ‘That sweet boy Kacchan who buys vicuña for Izuchan whenever he asks for it’.

In reality, Katsuki had no clue what vicuña was. He just told Izuku to buy whatever kinda fuckin’ yarn he wanted no matter what the price was. Kirishima and Kaminari weren’t necessarily wrong when they called him a simp, but he was too prideful to admit it out loud. And, Katsuki was weak for his boyfriend. Seeing his face light up just made Katsuki’s heart melt into a goopy little puddle. If buying some fancy ass yarn made Izuku look at him like that, like he was the greatest person in the world, Katsuki would gladly drain his bank account dry. And, Izuku really didn’t ask for much, so, he’d take any chance he could get at spoiling his boyfriend.

“Tell ‘em hi for me. I’ll make Dot those cookies she likes next week.” Another reason Katsuki was in the good graces of his boyfriend’s knitting group: he bribed them with baked goods. Dolores, or Dot as she reminded everyone, was especially fond of his double chocolate chili cookies.

“Oh, she’ll love that, Kacchan. She keeps asking for the recipe, but I know that’s a state secret.”

“Dot’ll have to meet me in the pit. It’s my one bargaining chip.”

Katsuki wasn’t afraid to meet Izuku’s knitting group. He was just…apprehensive. The ladies were incredibly protective of Izuku. He was young, with those big kind eyes and warm smile. Izuku just had this way of drawing people to him, and the ladies in his group were not immune. Katsuki was worried that they’d be disappointed when they met him. He was angry and loud and the last person you’d expect to be a good partner for someone like Izuku. He already knew he wasn’t good enough for the other man; he hated the thought of those women confirming his worst fear.

“Oh, Kacchan, they’ll love you.” Katsuki didn’t say anything, not really having the right words. Somehow, Izuku must’ve sensed it, because he gave the other man a smile and stood up to collect their plates. Katsuki frowned at him and shot up, swiping the dishes away from Izuku’s hand. Izuku pouted at him.

“You cooked, I clean. Them’s the rules, my good bitch. Go sit down or somethin’. I wanna hear about your new project ‘n maybe we can watch a movie or something.”

“Okay, Kacchan.”

The two men fell into the easiness of existing within each other’s space, not having to explain themselves or show a false front. Something in Katsuki’s chest eased as he washed the dishes.
Katsuki’d never thought he would be the domestic type. All he thought of when he was younger was being a hero, taking down villains and winning glory. Having this sense of belonging, of home, was something he’d never in a million years considered, and now he couldn’t even fathom living without it. Later, when he and Izuku were on the couch together, half-asleep with a newly completed blanket stretched across their laps, Katsuki would think about how lucky he was to have this home that he and Izuku had created together, to have this sense of rightness that he’d yearned for for so long. For now, though, he stuck his hands into soapy water and ran a dishcloth across the surface of a plate.

In the other room, Katsuki’s forgotten phone began to merrily buzz away as the internet broke at the news of Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight having a significant other.

@HeroWeekly
Dynamight announces his relationship. From all of us at Hero Weekly, we wish the best to them both!

It was the second day of Katsuki’s break from work. He woke up before Izuku did and took a few minutes to lounge in bed and watch his boyfriend sleep.

Izuku was not an attractive sleeper. Somehow, he always ended up with his face half-mashed into a pillow with a little pool of saliva forming under his mouth. He had one leg on top of the covers and was splayed over Katsuki’s chest. The blonde man could feel the small wet spot on his shirt from where Izuku’s head rested.

Izuku’s chest rose and fell in even, unhurried breaths. His face was lax, soft and vulnerable in the early morning light. He sniffled once and nuzzled his head further into Katsuki’s chest. One hand drooped sadly off the side of the bed. His uncovered leg had hooked itself around Katsuki’s calf sometime in the night. His shirt rode up his back a little. Katsuki could just see the top of a silvery scar. He knew that if he looked, the scar would trace down the other’s spine.

Katsuki ran his hand very gently down the length of the scar. Despite reassurances that touching it didn’t hurt, Katsuki always tried to be careful. Izuku had experienced so much pain, a horrible amount from Katsuki himself, and he was terrified to inflict any more, no matter how accidental.

Izuku snuffled again, but it seemed more awake. His head shifted on Katsuki’s chest and he froze, hand stilling against the other’s back. Two bleary green eyes blinked up at him, half-lidded and blinking slowly.

“Kacc’n?” Izuku’s voice croaked as he slurred the word. The green haired man shifted to a more comfortable position on Katsuki’s chest.

“G’morning, Freckles,” Katsuki murmured in reply. Izuku made some sort of sound - Katsuki wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be words - before he slumped sideways and rolled to the side of the bed. Katsuki pouted a little at losing his little weighted blanket.

Izuku shuffled out of bed, cane in hand, and began the trek to the living room. Katsuki yanked himself out of bed as well and followed behind.

Despite popular belief, Katsuki was not a morning person. He’d conditioned himself to wake up early, go to bed early, and get stuff done like a functional human being. That being said, he was kind of a grouch first thing in the morning. Izuku wasn’t much better, though he had more practice at sleeplessness.

Since Katsuki was, technically, the first person to wake up, he made breakfast. It looked like it was meant to be so once he walked into their little living room to tell the other man that food was ready.

Izuku was sprawled across their sofa, looking pale and panting. His cane was, once again, on the floor. Katsuki turned on his heel and marched back to the kitchen. He returned with the cold fabric sacks of rice they kept in the fridge for an occasion such as this. Katsuki draped one across Izuku’s neck, one over the skin of his forehead and eyes and, with a little finagling, helped him put the other behind his back.

“Thanks, Kacchan,” Izuku said in a breathy little voice. Katsuki grunted in acknowledgement and went back into the kitchen to make sure the food wasn’t burning.

These episodes were a common enough occurrence with Izuku that Katsuki wasn’t terribly worried. He wasn’t quite sure about the details about why this happened - something about the vagus nerve and blood pressure. But he knew how to help and how to stop it from getting worse. In all, it was on the more benign side of symptoms that Izuku could experience, even though it was frustrating for Izuku. And that fact alone made it Katsuki’s enemy.

The blonde man finished cooking in the kitchen and brought his creation out, bypassing their table to come sit on the sofa. Izuku wasn’t going to be moving from that position for a bit. Plus, the cushions looked so much more inviting at the moment than the hard wood of their table chairs. Katsuki put the plates down on their little coffee table, made another trip to the kitchen for coffee and water, and lifted Izuku’s legs so he could slide himself under to sit down. He propped his own feet up on the low table.

“Water’s on the table once you’re ready. Food too, if you want.”

“You’re the best, Kacchan.” Katsuki felt himself flush and shoveled food into his mouth instead of replying.

Izuku praising him was like a drug, almost: he couldn’t get enough of the feeling, of how his spine tingled and his chest beat with the thumping of his heart. Katsuki leaned forward to pick up the remote sitting on their little table and flipped the tv on, turning to a local news channel and setting the volume to low.

Little by little Izuku sat up until he pulled his legs from Katsuki’s lap and tucked them under himself, leaning forward and picking up the glass of water left on the table for him. Katsuki watched the deft, almost unconscious movement as Izuku shifted the slowly warming cold packs around to suit his new position. Izuku sipped slowly at the water, fiddling with the straw as he did so.

“I was gonna get groceries later. You wanna go?” Katsuki asked. Izuku nodded.

“I might need a little while longer, but I wanna spend time with you.”

“Sounds good.” They lapsed into silence as Izuku finished his water and Katsuki took a large swig of coffee.

The television flashed and both men looked up. Katsuki’s face scowled back at them. The same face squinted back, trying to read the tiny words running across the screen. He gave up after a few seconds and slouched back into the couch. Izuku, by this time, had started on his food. For some reason, Katsuki’s brain wanted to fill the silence and so he started rambling about a dog he’d seen on patrol. He looked over and had to do a double take at seeing Izuku’s now intense gaze.

Izuku loved dogs. And cats. He’d always wanted both but he and his mother never had the time, space, or money to take one in. It caused him to absolutely lose his marbles every time he saw a dog or cat on the street. The stray cats in their old neighborhood knew Izuku on sight, coming up to him and cuddling as much as possible. The Midoriyas had a tendency to feed the strays, both of them having hearts too big for their own good. Their landlord hadn’t been impressed, but was cowed into submission by the twin looks of despair the pair had given him when he’d once asked them to stop. The man had felt so guilty he’d immediately apologized. A few weeks later, a makeshift little cat house had been erected in the alleyway behind their apartment building.

As Katsuki rambled on, pulling out his phone to show Izuku pictures of the dog in question, he thought idly of his plan for the future. Once Katsuki rose to Number One, he was going to buy Izuku a dog. They’d go online, or to the shelter, or something. Katsuki knew that Izuku loved big dogs. So that’s what he was going to get him.

Katsuki was always worried about Izuku. He knew the other man could handle himself, but the worry was still there. The two men often didn’t see each other for days at a time, or only for a few minutes before bed. A dog would keep Izuku company, keep him safe. His and Izuku’s relationship wasn’t exactly public. They didn’t go out of their way to hide it - Katsuki would rather die than pretend he wasn’t in love with his boyfriend - but they didn’t exactly make it a huge deal.

Their love was for them and for them alone. Katsuki couldn’t be bothered to give a shit about how everyone else viewed their relationship (A notable exception lay in Izuku’s knitting group, but motherly types always seemed to be the exception). He wouldn’t apologize for being himself or hide a part of his life in order to win points with the media.

Izuku, on the other hand, often kept forgetting that Katsuki was such a big public figure. Yes, he knew his boyfriend was one of the top ranked heroes in Japan, but he knew the other man as the guy who wore his hand-made socks into battle for good luck and once tripped over a cat and nearly cried when he heard its yowl of alarm. The soft, dorky side Katsuki showed him often overshadowed the imposing pro hero side. In any case, Izuku was a bit of a homebody. He worked from home and most of his hobbies not channeled into his obsession with heroes tended to be on the side of ‘little mouse in the countryside during a light rain’. It was endearing as hell.

But one big fear of Katsuki’s was Izuku being targeted by someone. Izuku - with his comfy oversized sweaters and worn-ass yellow backpack full of knitting and cane that had art contributions from Eri and Kota - seemed like he would look to be an easy target for villains to go after. Having a huge dog by the man’s side would be a good sort of buffer. Scary dog privilege was real, even if most huge dogs were generally gentle giants.

Katsuki’s ramble turned into a discussion between the two men on what kind of dog would be best to have. Izuku kept bringing up big breeds like Newfoundlands and Katsuki quietly filed away that information for later.

Eventually, Izuku deemed himself good to go and the two men went to get ready for the day. They moved around each other in an easy and assured way, handing garments over and brushing their teeth.

Katsuki dressed himself in his normal grocery/errand attire, which wasn’t much different in color scheme from his hero outfit, except perhaps with less color variation. Dark jeans and a soft shirt were accompanied by a well-loved sweatshirt, a black bucket hat, and matching face mask. He mourned his murdered boots as he slipped socks on and shoved his feet into sneakers.
“I didn’t know the Black Parade was hiring, Kacchan,” Izuku laughed.

“Fuck off, Freckles. You wish you looked this good.” Izuku snorted at his words. Katsuki turned around, taking in Izuku’s appearance.

The man wore a soft-looking sweater with cuffed jeans and his ugly ass red shoes. His cane was in one hand while the other fiddled idly with a sleeve. A dorky pair of glasses finished off the look. The ensemble was reminiscent of a kind English teacher who queer high school students adored. Katsuki refused to admit it was cute. Instead, he made a considering face.

“Why the hell do we look like that one fuckin’ meme about gay people going to brunch?”

Izuku made a choked wheezing noise Katsuki knew to be laughter. He felt a grin forming on his own face at seeing Izuku giggling at his joke. Eventually, Izuku’s breath evened out, leaving him smiling at the other man.

“I think we’d need a couple more people for that, Kacchan.” Katsuki shrugged and turned to open their door. He exited the apartment followed by the familiar cadence of Izuku right behind him. Door locked, the two men went to run errands.

Their trip was mostly uneventful. The general public had learned by now that, no matter how curious they were about him, Katsuki Bakugou should not be approached on his day off. The two were left in relative peace, only a few bystanders gawking at them.

Katsuki’s phone rang as they strolled up and down the aisles of the grocery store. He pulled it out, saw that his PR team was calling him, and promptly shoved the phone back into his pocket. Izuku blinked up at him, his head tilted. He must’ve decided that he either didn’t care or was too used to Katsuki’s antics by now, because he simply shrugged and kept walking.

Katsuki felt his phone buzz away in his pocket as the pair wound their way around the store. He tossed a box of cereal into the cart as it chimed, indicating he had a voicemail.

The men checked out and exited the store, groceries in tow. They began the walk home, pace slower to accommodate the added weight of their purchases. It was nice, existing in that moment. Katsuki could feel the cool breeze of early autumn flow past him, refreshing but not cutting through his clothes. The sun was shining golden, warm in a way that only happened in the fall. Katsuki could smell something delicious wafting out of the open doors of a bakery, mixing with something that smelled like petrichor. The air held the promise of things to come, of nights spent in warmth against a cold night, of hands entwined under the spread of a blanket.

A leaf crunched under his boot as they made the turn onto their apartment street. The clinking of Izuku’s cane against the pavement created a soothing sort of cadence. They made their way up the steps as Katsuki’s phone began to buzz once again. He let out a loud groan, thumping his head against the wood of their apartment door. Izuku looked over at him, a little half smile curling across his face.

“‘s the PR team,” Katsuki ground out. Izuku fiddled with the keys.

“I’ll start putting everything away. You talk to them. If you need an out, tell them I need you for something.” Katsuki could hear the smile in his voice.

“Fine,” he grumbled. Izuku opened the door and they walked in, Katsuki pulling out his phone. He deposited his share of the grocery haul onto the counter and stepped back outside to answer the call.

“What.”

“Dynamight, sir! Thank you for picking up.” Katsuki pretended not to notice the muttered ‘finally’ on the other end. “We’d like you and Mr. Deku to come into the agency so we can discuss next steps regarding your announcement.”

“Hah? What fuckin’ announcement?” Katsuki was genuinely confused. He didn’t remember making any announcement lately.

“Err, about your relationship with Mr. Deku? It’s been all over the internet since your last fight?”

Ah, fuck, Katsuki thought.

“Right,” he ground out. “Fuck. Okay. Let me ask him.” Katsuki hung up the phone and sighed, leaning against the wood of their apartment door. He really didn’t want to have to go to talk to his PR people. Katsuki bonked his head against the sturdy wood behind him and let out a long groan before pushing himself up and entering their apartment.

Izuku must’ve sensed something because he looked up at Katsuki with a small smile that quickly turned into a frown.

“Kacchan?” He asked. “Is everything okay?” Katsuki grumbled something nonsensical and closed the distance between the two of them, flopping his head down onto Izuku’s head. He felt Izuku’s curls fluff around his face as he let out a puff of air. Izuku patted his shoulder in a placating manner, winding his other arm up and around Katsuki’s shoulder to hug him. He melted into the embrace.

“That bad?”

“They want both of us to come into the agency.” Izuku let out a questioning noise, not being able to talk as his face was currently being squished into Katsuki’s chest. “Apparently I announced our relationship when I answered a question about my fuckin’ socks.”

Izuku snorted. He pulled away from Katsuki a little so he could be heard. “That’s not that bad, though.” Katsuki could hear laughter in his voice and he resented his boyfriend for it just a little. He let out a little petulant whine and Izuku laughed outright.

“I know you don’t like having to deal with PR stuff but why don’t we get food or something after? Give you something to look forward to.” If Katsuki had a tail, he’d be wagging it. “And, we can do something fun too. How does that sound?” Katsuki extricated his face from Izuku’s hair and looked down.

Izuku was grinning at him and clearly trying to hide his laughter at his boyfriend’s predicament. Katsuki pouted, which caused Izuku to snort.

“Fine,” he finally said. Izuku patted him on the arm and laughed a little. They parted, Katsuki to confirm with his agency and Izuku to their couch. The blonde man joined him afterwards, lifting Izuku’s legs and plopping them on his lap.

The pair spent the day in lazy, unburdened softness. After relaxing on the couch and watching a show or two, the men took a trip to the park near their house. They walked a slow loop, content to be in each other’s company, and found a spot under a large tree to sit for a while. Izuku laid down in the grass, letting the autumn breeze waft across his skin. Katsuki departed for a few minutes, returning with drinks. They sipped at their drinks slowly. Izuku reached into his ever-present bag and pulled out his newest project: a sweater he was making for one of their friends. Katsuki shuffled down and pillowed his head on Izuku’s lap, closing his eyes and dozing in the peaceful moment. Occasionally, Izuku pulled a hand away from his task and carded his fingers through blonde locks.

Unbeknownst to the pair enjoying their time together, a photo was taken of them.

Katsuki groaned as he woke up the next morning. His day with Izuku yesterday had been fantastic and he had almost forgotten about having to see his PR team this morning. He tried rolling onto his side before realizing there was a pressure against his chest. Izuku’s head was pillowed on his chest, one scarred hand curling in the fabric of Katsuki’s sleep shirt. The blonde man snorted to himself as he became aware of a damp spot on his shirt right where Izuku’s slack mouth rested. Izuku’s hand twitched where it lay, spasming against Katsuki’s chest. He frowned, before reaching over Izuku’s chest as best he could and peeling apart the window blinds.

Their peaceful autumn sky was drenched in gray, looming storm clouds writhing in the distance. Fuck.

Katsuki hated the rain, always had. It made his quirk finicky, his skin too tight. It always made him grouchier, more likely to explode or fly off the handle. He really didn’t want to have to deal with the PR team today. He groaned softly, flopping back on his pillows and jostling Izuku’s head. The man snorted and shot up, blinking sleepily in the grayness of the morning. Katsuki winced. He hated waking Izuku up by accident.

“Sorry, Freckles,” Katsuki mumbled, his voice gravelly. Izuku blinked at him, bleary eyes slowly focusing.

“G’morning, Kacchan,” Izuku replied, rubbing one eye with the heel of his hand. His nose twitched in the way it did when his hand injuries ached a bit. “You okay?”

“Yeah, Sunshine.” Izuku smiled sleepily at him for a moment before completely rolling over him to the other side of his bed, the little asshat. Katsuki spluttered out an outraged noise. Izuku just laughed as he shuffled to his feet, letting out a loud groan as his joints cracked.

“Fuckin’ glowstick soundin’ motherfucker,” Katsuki grumbled. Izuku stuck his tongue out at him before walking out of their bedroom, flipping Katsuki off over his shoulder with his free hand. Katsuki had never been more in love, and he felt the ball of discontent that had been lodged in his stomach flex and ease, dissolving into contentment.

…He still grumbled through their morning routine, though.

The two men started their journey to Katsuki’s agency early, wanting to stop and get coffee on the way as a little treat. Katsuki walked with his hands in his pockets, slouching as thunder rumbled across the sky. Izuku trotted beside him gamely, his movements more stiff with the drop in barometric pressure.

Izuku loved walking places. He loved the feeling of the outside sinking into his bones. After over a year and a half cooped up in a little hospital room - and later an acute rehab facility - Katsuki couldn’t blame him. Being inside for too long made Katsuki’s skin itch with the need to move or do something. He couldn’t imagine seeing the world only through the pane of a hospital window for so long.

The pair made it to Katsuki’s agency with ten minutes to spare, drinks firmly in hand. Izuku stopped to chat with the front desk staff as Katsuki took a long, slow sip of his drink. He looked around idly, watching the people in the lobby walk around and live their lives.

The people milled around in the morning light, lives melding together and pulling away in microcosms of memory. Katsuki breathed in deeply, letting the smell of his steaming coffee seep into his lungs. He saw a woman stride across the room and groaned as softly as he could. It was the head of their PR department and Katsuki’s mortal enemy. The woman gave him a strained smile, one that he was familiar with.

Katsuki, unfortunately, was on very intimate terms with their agency PR Department. Sound bites taken out of context, disastrous interviews with reporters who seemingly had it out for him, and other such nonsense were just a drop in the hat on the bullshit his PR team had to handle. Most of the team was actually genuinely nice, and normally on his side no matter what. The key exception was the head of the department. She always spoke down to him, condescending to him like he was as child. He hated dealing with her. Fortunately, the feeling was entirely mutual and she usually brushed him off to the more tolerable people in the department after snarking at him. It seemed, though, that such a “momentous occasion” warranted her getting her snake-ass involved.

Katsuki made a low noise of discontent but nodded at her as she arrived at his side.

“Good morning, Dynamight,” she said. Her voice was clipped. She had her “annoyed but pretending to be polite” tone turned on. Katsuki heard fabric rustle as Izuku materialized at his side. He threaded his arm through Katsuki’s and shifted his coffee over so that he was free to use his cane. Izuku’s scarred arm felt like the best kind of anchor and Katsuki could feel the tension in his body ease at the touch. Izuku’s hand squeezed his bicep briefly.

“Oh, hello,” she said, finally seeing Izuku. She sounded surprised. “I’m sorry, but Dynamight and I are going to be going into a meeting in a minute or so. I’m sure Akari here can get you set up with a visitor’s pass and a tour. Were you waiting to speak with someone?” By the sound of her voice, she was already over this conversation. Katsuki snorted under his breath.

“Um, yes?” Izuku tilted his head. “Someone from Kacchan’s PR department asked both of us to come in today.” The woman frowned.

“I’m sorry, I don’t believe we have anyone employed who goes by ‘Kacchan’.” Behind them, Akari made a choked off noise, breathing hard through their nose to try to conceal their laugh. The PR department head gave them a very put-upon look. “Why don’t you wait here and I can call someone to come meet you.”

Just then, a wild Kirishima appeared. The man in all his hulking glory sidled through the doors of the agency looking very tired. He blinked and his eyes snapped open, a grin splitting across his face.

“Midoriya!” Kirishima’s yell was accompanied by him sweeping Izuku up into his arms and spinning around. Izuku let out a noise like a dog’s squeak toy and weakly patted Kirishima’s shoulder. The PR head blustered, having been bumped into during Kirishima’s mad stampede.

“Oh man, Mido! It’s been so long since we’ve seen you. Ah man, how’re ya doing?” Kirishima asked. Izuku laughed, squeezing the man around his neck in a hug.

“I’ve been good, Kiri. Kacchan’s PR team asked us to come in for a meeting.” Kirishima nodded.

“Oh yeah, Mina was telling me about that. It’s ‘cause of that sock interview, right?” Izuku nodded. “Man, that was so funny. I’ve never seen Bakugou so embarrassed, dude.” Katsuki grumbled something unintelligible under his breath. Izuku snorted at Katsuki’s pain.

Just then, another figure emerged and Katsuki breathed a sigh of relief. Jun, Katsuki’s favorite PR person, exited the elevators and walked over to the group.

Jun was one of the newer members of the PR team, but one of the best. They were always down to help Katsuki with shit and did it with no judgment. Katsuki also thought that he’d seen them shotgun a Redbull once. Iconic, really.

“Hey, man,” They said, completely ignoring their boss. “You ready for the meeting?” Katsuki deflated with relief and nodded his head vehemently. Boss lady clucked disapprovingly.

“Jun, dear,” she simpered, “I was just about to bring Katsuki up. We’re just waiting for his elusive partner.” Behind her, Kirishima wheezed. Jun blinked.

“He’s…right there?” They pointed over to Izuku, who was still being squeezed to death by Kirishima. Jun waved at the pair. “Nice to meet you in person, Mr. Deku! Huge fan!”

Katsuki watched in fascination and satisfaction as the head of the PR department seemingly went through the five stages of grief as she realized that she had not only brushed off Katsuki’s boyfriend but also hero fucking Deku, who’d literally saved the world. She stammered and choked as Jun herded the three others into the elevator. As the elevator doors closed Katsuki saw her frantically gesturing between herself, the closing elevators, and Akari in disbelief.

“Sorry about that, man,” Jun said, rubbing their neck with one hand, “She was insistent that she be the one to handle all this despite all of us telling her not to.”

Katsuki looked at them and, solemnly as he could, said, “I owe you my first born child.” Jun barked a laugh and waved him off before leading the group into the bowels of the PR department. Kirishima, while not initially invited to the meeting, tagged along gamely. He waved to some of the department people and chatted amiably with their little group. Jun ushered all of them into a conference room. Katsuki settled into one of the plush swivel chairs, watching as Izuku did the same and spun a couple times.

“Don’t yeet yourself, dipshit,” Katsuki said. Izuku just stuck his tongue out at the other man. Kirishima, following Izuku’s example, seemed to be trying to get to Mach 1 speed. Jun, blinking a few times, just shrugged and settled into their own chair. They pulled up a document on their computer and shifted before they began to speak.

“Alright, firstly congratulations on announcing your relationship, although I suspect it was an accident.” Katsuki snorted through his nose. “Our PR team came up with a few ideas to help but I think we have one that you’ll like the best”. Jun showed the two their screen.

“Essentially, you two will start posting on social media about your life together. You don’t have to acknowledge any questions about your relationship, and we’ll keep any interviews away as long as we can.”

Katsuki sagged in relief. He hated interviews with a burning passion. From the little huff of breath at his side, Katsuki could tell that Izuku was laughing at him, the little traitor.

“And,” Jun continued, a little smile on their face, “If you’re okay with it, Mr. Deku, we were hoping that we might be able to get some knitting content from you?” Izuku blinked for a moment. Jun had such a hopeful expression on their face, a slight blush on their cheekbones. “I’m a newbie knitter and you’re kind of my hero?”

“I’d be happy to,” Izuku said, a smile in his voice,” And if you’re interested, I go to a knitting group on Thursdays. The ladies there are super friendly!”

Jun looked like Christmas had come early.

They gushed excitedly for a moment, even spinning around in their chair. The meeting quickly broke down after that, the two chattering about knitting patterns and plans. They ended with a cursory explanation of the plan going forward and a promise to forward a written document with more information in time. The meeting ended blessedly early and Katsuki all but ran down into the lobby. Akari laughed at his relieved expression.

The rest of the day was, in Katsuki’s opinion, much more enjoyable. He and Izuku walked over to a small ramen shop where they were regular patrons. After a delicious lunch - with even more delicious company - he and Izuku walked over to a tiny hole-in-the-wall yarn store that Izuku loved. He watched his boyfriend shuffle up and down the aisles, feeling the yarn between his crooked fingers. Something warm settled in Katsuki’s stomach as Izuku turned to him with bright eyes. He smiled and held out the basket in his hand for Izuku to drop the yarn into.

This was where he belonged, in this time and place, soaking up the feeling of being content and in love. Izuku turned to the wall behind him. The dangling yarn framed the man in a way that felt so right. A sunbeam pooled itself onto the floor, giving the room a sleepy warmth. Katsuki could see a few dust particles and stray fibers float in the air before settling down. Almost unconsciously, Katsuki pulled out his phone and snapped a picture. Then, remembering Jun’s words, he took another one of the basket in his hands.

Izuku wound slowly around the little shop, Katsuki following after like a puppy. The employee smiled at them as they passed. When they checked out Katsuki barely glanced at the price, instead simply handing over his card. He held out an arm for Izuku to take as they walked home.

Katsuki could feel the soft press of Izuku’s head against the side of his arm. He squeezed the other’s hand once, feeling the crooked fingers against the palm of his hand. A small gust of wind rustled through the leaves around them as they walked. Their hands swung lazily in the air between them.

Katsuki decided to post the picture he’d taken of Izuku as he went to bed. The man had his head half-pillowed on his lap, dead asleep. Katsuki idly carded one of his hands through messy green air as he stared at the picture again. Eventually, he typed out a caption and hit post before immediately putting his phone down, adjusting Izuku into a position that’d be less straining on his back, and went to bed.

Notes:

I started writing this after graduating when I was living with my mom. My computer broke, and this document is titled "i miss the internet" in my google drive. Just a fun fact for you.

I also really got back into knitting and was kind of going through it for a long while but I'm back!! Hopefully to stay!!

I don't see enough fics where knitting is involved and, as a simple man with simple tastes, decided to rectify that.
