Blind Date

Summary:

Once Tails got older, he started getting more attention from girls. However, the fox wasn't all that interested in getting a girlfriend, seeing his new found popularity as more of a nuisance.

Of course, it's not like he was the only one with a say in the matter.

Work Text:

Tails hated suits.

Mobians are simply not made for wearing clothes. Gloves so our hands don't get dirty, shoes so our feet don't get hurt. Anything beyond that is utterly unnecessary.

Of course female mobians wore clothes, but that's relatively recent. A few centuries ago, after humankind and mobiankind found peace with one another, our women gradually adopted their customs and started covering their ''private parts''. As if our fur showed anything anyway.

That being said, when a male mobian found himself clothed beyond his hands and feet, it usually had to do with a female mobian. And that's the case for one Miles ''Tails'' Prower.

More specifically, the culprit for Miles' current situation was a certain bat thief with an unhealthy obsession with precious stones. For some Gaia-forsaken reason, Rouge had been fixated on his love life as of late.

Ever since Tails had turned into a full-grown fox, he started getting a lot more attention from girls. Of course the famous sidekick of Sonic the Hedgehog always had his fair share of fans, but adulthood had given the vulpine a different kind of popularity.

It's not like he didn't like girls, and it'd be a lie if he said that a fan-club of his own wasn't a nice stroke to the ego, but they could be a bit too much sometimes. Miles felt bad for every time he made jokes about his big brother running away from girls after he had to fly away from a horde of fans that cornered him one time he went out to buy groceries.

Rouge, however, didn't seem to understand why Tails hadn't taken advantage of the situation to get himself a girlfriend. The truth was that he didn't actually know any of these women, and didn't want to just pick one for a one-night stand. It just wasn't who he was.

He had said as much to the bat, but somehow she took his statement as an invitation to try and find him a girlfriend herself. One that wouldn't try to get a tuft of his fur for a shrine or something like that.

And that's how Tails found himself in his current situation. Rouge showed up at his house just a few hours ago with a tailored suit in hand, kindly informing him he had a blind date at this fancy restaurant tonight, and that she'd steal and sell every single one of his inventions to GUN if he dared not to show up.

Urgh. He really hated suits. Tails wore a simple white shirt underneath a black blazer with matching black tie, shoes and, worst of all, pants. Pants that thankfully had been adjusted to accommodate the extra appendage on his backside.

Miles looked around. It had been a few minutes since he'd arrived, and still no sign of his date. The restaurant really felt chic, expensive-looking furniture with a nice view of the night lights of the city on the window next to his table.

Maybe because the restaurant was situated in a richer area of Station Square, all the other clients were humans. Tails felt glances his way every now and again, whether it was because they recognized him or because he was the only mobian around, he wasn't sure.

He adjusted the uncomfortable tie around his neck for what felt like the thousandth time. Rouge had told him absolutely nothing about his mysterious date, and his anxiety was getting the best of him. What would she be like? He supposed it wouldn't be one of his ''groupies'', so maybe someone who had never heard of him before? Such a mobian even existed? Geez, he was starting to sound like Sonic.

He felt a drop of sweat running down his forehead and checked his watch. What if she had bailed on him? No, it was still too early to be thinking that. Maybe she had gotten lost? These human neighborhoods could be pretty damn confusing to drive in sometimes. Perhaps he should call Rouge and… Wait, no! Get it together, Tails! It had just been a few minutes, his date would be arriving at any mo–

“Miles?”

He turned his head at the familiar voice. Even though he immediately recognized who it belonged to, Tails still had to do a double take at the young woman in front of him, so different she looked from what he was used to. “...Amy?”

That was definitely his friend Amy Rose in front of him, but Miles had never seen her the way she looked right now. The pink hedgehog wore an elegant red dress that hugged her figure, along with matching red heels and golden jewelry on her hands and neck. Her long quills, that she had grown over the years, were adorned by her classic hairband, and her make-up highlighted her facial features in a way that made her look like a model.

It took Miles a moment to realize he was gaping. He closed his mouth and shook his head, and before he could ask her what she was doing here, the hedgehog beat him to the punch. “Uh… Is there any chance you're the date that Rouge set me up with?”

Huh?

Amy was his date? What? Tails didn't expect Rouge to send someone he knew for this. And why Amy of all people?

“...Tails?”

Oh, shit, he had ignored her question. “S-Sorry! Yeah, I think that's me…” He blushed slightly and rubbed the back of his head.

She gave a small smile and sat down in front of him. “From the look on your face, I guess she didn't tell you who you'd be meeting here either, did she?”

He let out a small sigh. “I wasn't that subtle, was I? Rouge's been going on about how I need a girlfriend to get me out of my lab every now and again, so she came up with the bright idea to arrange me a blind date.”

Amy giggled. “Well, a little sun wouldn't hurt, you know.”

“I don't spend that long inside.”

“I heard you've been hiding away from your Tailettes.” She fought to contain her chuckle.

The vulpine's eyes widened before he hid his face in his hands. “They have a name?”

Amy lost the fight and let out a hearty laugh. Tails lowered his hands as he stole a glance at the hedgehog in front of him. The sound of her laughter actually made him forget all about his embarrassment for a moment.

She didn't seem to be caught off guard as bad as him to find out he was her secret date. Now that the surprise had worn off, the fox wondered whether being here with a friend was better or worse than if he was with a stranger.

Well, he didn't have to go through the whole process of getting to know someone for the first time, so that was a plus. However, going on a date with a long time friend had its own problems. Why had Rouge chosen Amy anyway?

“Are you ready to order?” A waiter interrupted his thoughts.

“Oh!” Tails turned to the human who had approached the two of them. “Yeah, I think so. Do you know what you want?”

Amy looked at her menu. “Hm… How about the Soleanna Princess Special?”

“It's one of our clients' favorites. What about you, sir?”

“Well… How about… ‘When a Flatfoot's Flat Broke’...?”

“Perfect. I'll be right back.” The waiter turned and made his way to the kitchen.

What's up with these names? Just call it a ramen for chaos sake.

“This place is so fancy, I've never even heard of half of these dishes.” Amy told him.

The fox wasn't used to fine dining either. He usually leaned towards ready meals or whatever wasn't too hard to cook. Spending the first years of his life in Sonic's nomadic lifestyle made Tails appreciate fast culinary. “Yeah, Rouge got us some pretty classy treatment, huh?”

“She sure did. I'm still surprised she set up a blind date for the two of us.” The pink girl's eyes darted to the side.

Oh. So she was taken aback. What exactly did she think of being on a date with him? “Yeah… She didn't give you any hints on why she went through the trouble of doing all this?”

“Not really.” She answered. “All she said was that a friend of hers was looking for a girl and that he was 'totally my type'.” The girl smirked his way.

“...Oh.” He rubbed the back of his head as his eyes fell to the table. “I guess that was a bit of false advertising on her side, huh?”

“Why, of course not! In fact, she was right on the money.” Half-lidded eyes now complemented her smirk.

The fox's eyes widened as his face turned red. She had to be teasing him, right? There was no way he was actually her type.

Your first thought would be that she's into blue hedgehogs who could break the sound barrier, but you'd be wrong. Amy had actually gotten over her crush on Sonic a few years ago. Unrequited love could only go so far, after all.

“Um… T-Thanks…” Miles said, unable to maintain eye contact with the pink girl.

She giggled. “I get why Rouge teases you so much. You're so cute, all flustered like that.”

Tails' face somehow got even redder. Yeah, she was definitely teasing him. “Oh, I see. It was all an elaborate plot from the two of you to play with me.”

“Heh. Totally.” She replied. “I thought it'd be harder to get you to blush with all the attention you've been getting lately.”

“Like you're one to talk.” Miles defended himself. “I'm not the only one who got more popular over the years.” Like him, Amy had also gotten more attractive as she got older, and the people around her noticed.

“Oh, stop it. I'm not asked out that often.”

“Says the record holder for the most cards ever received at the Restoration's Valentine's Day event.” Now it was his turn to smirk. It was quite the sight last year's February 14th when the hedgehog had to carry a pile of cards taller than her as she went home at the end of the day.

Amy huffed. “I swear Jewel only came up with that thing to mess with me.”

“Practically every guy at the Restoration got you a card.” Said Tails. “And a lot of girls too.”

“Shut up already!” She playfully scolded him, but Tails could see she was smiling. “And don't dodge the question, mister. How come you have a bunch of girls hitting on you on the daily, but I can still get you to blush with just a little teasing?”

“W-Well, none of those girls are you.”

He only realized the implications of what he said after Amy's cheeks had turned the same color of her quills. His face matched hers and he turned away from the girl.

Now both of them were flustered and didn't know what to say. Thankfully, the waiter chose that moment to arrive with their food.

“Enjoy your meal.” He said as he set the plates down on the table.

“Thanks.” They both said in unison. This got them to blush again. The waiter merely raised an eyebrow before making his way back.

Tails started on his ramen as Amy took a bite of her salad. “Ahem, this is not half bad, is it?”

“Yeah, it's pretty good.” She sheepishly said. Great, he made things awkward. What was wrong with him?

That's what scared him about a date with someone he knew. Mess up here, and things could change forever between him and the pink hedgehog. He knew Amy since forever, and didn't want to risk losing her friendship.

“All that big talk before and I got as embarrassed as you with just one comment, huh?” She interrupted his thoughts.

“I-I didn't mean it like that…” The fox tried to justify himself.

“Oh? So you didn't mean that I'm cuter than your fan-girls?”

“N-No!”

“So I'm not cute then?” Amy's face turned into a scowl.

“What? No! I mean yes, you are! You're super cute! I-I mean, you're…” Miles began to stutter.

He paused as her scowl broke into a wide grin. “Hehe. Gotcha.” She chuckled at his expense. “Serves you right.”

Tails frowned. Oh, so that's how it's gonna be? He could play games too.

The vulpine mimicked her grin. “Ah, sorry, I did mean it. Can't even believe I'm on a date with the Restoration's Valentine Queen right now.”

“Oh?” She raised an eyebrow at the unspoken challenge. “Is that so?”

“No one will believe I had dinner with Amy 'Heartbreaker' Rose. I'll be the talk of the organization by Monday.” Half-lidded eyes and a teasing grin followed his words.

Her eyes narrowed, though the smile never left her face. “I think it'll be the opposite, really. World-famous Tails the Fox, known for being unable to step out of his house without receiving a love confession, going on a date with little old me.”

“Nonsense. Resistance leader, Restoration organizer, cutest smile on the planet Amy Rose? If anything, you're way out of my league.”

“Oh, please.” She waved off, though Miles could see she fought to contain her blush. “You flatterer. Do you do all this smooth talking to every girl or is it just me?”

“My, my, halfway through our first date and you're already getting jealous of other girls? I must be doing something right.”

Amy's red face met Tails' smug expression. The natural innocence the fox had as a kit, along with the fact he was almost always the youngest in the room, meant that Miles had to endure a good deal of teasing growing up. It felt nice to deliver a little payback.

“W-Where is all this even coming from? Never seen all that cockiness when Rouge is the one poking fun at you.”

“Maybe she's not as adorable as you when you're all flustered like that.” He rested his head on his open palm.

Amy could make a great impression of a red traffic light. The hedgehog had both hands on her cheeks and seemed to be trying her hardest to make her blood rush down from her face. Tails wondered if he wasn't going a bit too far, but he wasn't lying that she looked absolutely adorable.

“Hmm? No comeback? The fox got your tongue?” He pushed on.

Her hands now covered her eyes. She said something Miles couldn't quite hear.

“Sorry? I can't hear you.”

She leaned slightly forwards and repeated herself. He mimicked her actions, but still couldn't hear the hedgehog.

“I didn't quite catch that… Are you okay, Amy?” Had he actually gone too far? Well done Tails, you just had to go and ruin the night.

She leaned further, her head halfway through the table. The vulpine leaned as well, hoping to hear her words this time. However, her hands flew to his cheeks, holding his head in place as her mouth collided with his.

The first thing Miles realised after the shock wore off was how soft her lips felt. His eyes closed slowly, and he could smell the sweet scent of perfume coming from the hedgehog. It couldn't have lasted more than a few seconds, but he could swear it felt like hours had passed with the two of them interlocked.

Amy let go of him and her eyes found his, emerald green meeting sapphire blue. His mouth was slightly agape while hers had a small smile.

“...What's wrong? Hedgehog got your tongue?” She giggled.

Tails blinked. As his brain rebooted, all kinds of thoughts started to run through his head. But none of them had the chance to be turned into words.

Ahem.”

Both mobians jumped, turning to the human waiter next to their table. A few of the other clients quickly looked away after the couple turned in their direction. Apparently their little moment had had a few spectators.

“Are you ready to order dessert?” Asked the waiter. Neither realized they had finished eating.

Now both fox and hedgehog had matching flushed faces, neither of them able to meet the other's eyes. “I-I don't think I can eat anything else.” Said Amy.

“Um… Same.” Replied Tails. “Could you get us the check, please?”

Paying and making their way out of the restaurant did little to ease their embarrassment. Both mobians were now outdoors, still unable to look at each other.

“I… I had fun today.” Amy broke the silence.

“Me too.” Tails replied, rubbing the back of his head.

“Sorry if the kiss was a bit too much…”

“N-No! It wasn't. I really enjoyed it, actually.”

Amy's cheeks got warmer again. “...I guess it's not that hard to make either of us blush.”

He chuckled. “Looks like it's something we have in common. Uh… Do you need a ride back home?”

“I'd appreciate that.” The hedgehog smiled. “Where's your car?”

“Car? I came flying.” Answered the fox.

“Like… With the plane?”

“With my tails.”

“...You want to fly me back home?”

“Yeah, is there a problem? I fly with you during battles all the time.”

“I'm wearing a dress, Tails.”

“...You're always in a dr–”

Yes, but we're usually flying over a battlefield, not a city where hundreds of people can look up and find out the color of my underwear.”

Miles' face flushed once more. “I-I can solve that.”

“And how exactly are you gonna– eep!”

The hedgehog suddenly found herself in the fox's arms, bridal style. “Um… This way no one can see anything, see?”

Now it was her turn to flush. She adjusted herself and rested her head on the vulpine's chest. “...I guess this is fine.”

“Hold tight.” Said Tails as his namesakes started spinning.

And they took off. In a few seconds, both mobians could be seen among the tallest buildings of Station Square, two pint-sized spots flying under the dark night.

Amy initially had her eyes closed due to how far they were from the ground, but gradually opened them to greet the beautiful lights that lit up the city.

As she enjoyed the sights, Tails looked down at the woman in his arms. He had no idea what to expect from Rouge's arranged date, but it'd be a lie if he said he hadn't enjoyed himself.

Like every other guy at the Restoration, Miles started paying more attention to Amy as she got older and more attractive. But he had never thought of seeing his friend in a romantic light before tonight.

However, their date gave him a lot to think about. He was still afraid of damaging his friendship with the pink hedgehog, but maybe, just maybe… This could work.

In a much shorter time than it would've taken if they had gone by car, Tails landed on the entrance to Amy's building, and gently put her down.

“Thanks for the ride, Miles.”

“No problem.” The fox's eyes darted to the side.

She tilted her head. “...Is everything okay?”

Alright. It was now or never. “Are you… By any chance… Free next weekend?” He shyly asked.

Amy's eyes widened slightly, before her face eased into a warm smile. “Yeah, I'm free.”

His face lit up. “C-Can I contact you through the week so we can arrange something?”

“I'd like that.” She replied. Then, the hedgehog approached him and lightly kissed him on the cheek.

“Thank you for the night, Tails. See you.” She turned and entered the building, disappearing from sight.

Miles stood there for a few moments, one hand on the cheek Amy had kissed. What do you know, Rouge's idea had actually worked out well for him.

Not that he'd ever tell her that.

Amy closed the door for her apartment, and leaned her back against it. She had been so worried, but thankfully the date had gone well.

More than well, in fact. She smiled to herself. The hedgehog didn't think she'd get to kiss her two-tailed friend tonight, but a fortune teller knows that fate can be a funny thing sometimes.

“Can I assume this dreamy smile is a good sign?”

Amy jumped. She completely forgot her friend was still here. “Ah. Hey, Rouge.”

“I'd ask how the date went, but your face tells me everything I need to know. I still wanna hear the details though.”

The hedgehog sighed with a smile, as she began to remove her jewelry. “Yes, it went great. Thank you again for setting this up.”

“You're welcome, sweetie. But I still think you could've just asked him out yourself.”

“I know I could, I just wanted to–”

“I get it, I get it…” The bat interrupted her. “Blue got you traumatized after bailing on so many of your date attempts, and now you think every guy you approach with romantic intentions will run for the hills.”

Amy huffed. “I'm not traumatized–”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night, sweetheart.”

She frowned, but Rouge held a shred of truth. After she started to consider her furry friend romantically, Amy feared Tails would act like his best friend, and reject all her advances. Deep down she knew the fox wasn't the same as Sonic, but she still couldn't bring herself to ask him out.

So Amy went to her bat friend for help, and she came up with this fake blind date. “Either way, I owe you one, Rouge. If there's anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask.”

“Well, there's one thing…”

Amy shook her head with an amused smile. “I told you already, I don't think I can convince Knuckles to lend you the Master–”

“I wanna be the godmother.”

“Huh?”

And, if the first kid is a girl, I want her name to be Rouge.”

“W-What?”

“Urgh, fine. It can be the middle name.”

“Rouge!” Amy's face turned red one more time.

She giggled. “Honestly, it's so easy to make the both of you blush. You're really perfect for each other.”

The hedgehog huffed and turned away from her friend. Honestly, it's what she gets for asking the bat burglar for help.

If she's really moving forward with this, then Amy has to promise herself that things will be different from last time. No jumping the gun, she'll take things slowly and see how it goes. Definitely no thinking of marriage or kids that early.

That being said…

…Amy Prower did have a nice ring to it.
