"Usagi, come on," Minako called out, her voice a beacon of excitement in the quiet afternoon. "Let's go to the beach before it gets too crowded."
"But I'm not in the mood," Usagi replied listlessly, her eyes glued to her phone on the nightstand. "Mamo-chan still isn't answering my messages."
Minako sighed. "Look, he's just busy with college, okay? It's only been two weeks He's just busy, I bet you. You guys just keep missing each other. The time difference and all."
The two friends sat on the edge of the bed in Usagi's room, surrounded by the usual mess of textbooks and cosmic-themed pillows. Usagi's mood had been gloomy since Mamoru had left for America.
"Why don't you come with me?" she suggested with a knowing smile. "You need to get your mind off him."
"Mina-chan, I don't WANT to get my mind off Mamo-chan," Usagi soused, playing with her long blonde pigtails. Her pretty pink mouth was in a pout.
"You can let yourself think about something else for thirty minutes," Minako insisted. "Come on, let's head to the beach before we miss the sunset. We'll get bubble tea." Usagi's ears did perk up at the mention of a sweet snack.
The beach was quieter than during midday, with the sun beginning its slow descent towards the horizon. The light breeze carried the faint scent of saltwater. Usagi and Minako finished their drinks, leaning on the pier, watching the water change colors in the sunset. Pink and orange and purple. It was pretty, but she wished Mamo-chan was there.
Minako looked at Usagi, her eyes filled with determination. She had to do something to bring some color back to her friend's cheeks. "You know, I've always had a theory about love," she began, her voice low and conspiratorial.
Usagi raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What's that?"
"Well," Minako leaned in closer, her voice hushed, "I think sometimes, when we're missing someone, we just need to feel love in another way."
Before Usagi could ask what she meant, Minako leaned in and kissed her. It was a soft, gentle kiss at first, but grew deeper as their bodies responded. Usagi's eyes widened in surprise, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she found herself melting into it, feeling a warmth spread through her that had been absent.
The kiss grew more intense as Minako's hands found their way to Usagi's waist, pulling her closer. Usagi's heart raced, her thoughts a whirlwind. This wasn't the love she knew with Mamoru, but it was something. Something comforting and exciting.
Minako's tongue slipped past her lips, and Usagi found herself responding, the taste of bubble tea on Minako's breath mingling with her own. She felt Minako's hand move up her back, grabbing loosely at her pigtail. The sensation sent shivers down her spine.
As the sun kissed the horizon, painting the sky with fiery hues, their kisses grew more passionate. Usagi felt Minako's hand slide up her thigh, teasing the hem of her short skirt. Her own hands began to wander, exploring the contours of Minako's body through her clothes.
They broke apart, breathless, their eyes meeting. The unspoken question hung in the air: should they go further? But Minako pulled back slightly, a look of regret flickering across her features. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean... I just wanted to make you feel better," she admitted.
Usagi blinked, her cheeks flushed. "It's okay, Mina-chan," she murmured. "I... I liked it." The words felt strange to say, but it was true. The warmth inside her had spread, filling the empty space Mamoru's absence had left.
Minako leaned her forehead against Usagi's, their breaths mingling. "You deserve to feel loved," she said, her voice filled with a tender sincerity that made Usagi's heart ache.
For a while, there was nothing said between them; just the lingering taste of each other's lips as the waves lapped the shoreline. Usagi's mind was a whirlwind of emotions, torn between the comfort of Minako's touch and her loyalty to Mamoru. But then, it wasn't like with Mamoru at all. What she and Minako just shared was something wholly special and personal.
"Mina-chan," she began, her voice shaky. "What we just did... it felt... nice."
Minako nodded, her own cheeks flushed a soft pink. "Yeah, it did," she admitted. "But let's not make a big deal out of it, okay?"
"I mean, it did make me feel better," Usagi said, her deep blue eyes searching Minako's matching ones. "I do feel so lonely without Mamo-chan, but... this was different. It made me feel closer to you."
Minako's eyes softened, and she reached out to touch Usagi's cheek. "That's all I wanted," she murmured. "When Mamoru isn't around, it's my job to look after your heart. I'm your closest soldier, Princess."
The two of them sat there for a while, the setting sun casting a warm glow over their faces. They didn't speak, but the air between them was thick with unspoken words. The kiss had changed something, but neither of them was quite sure what it was yet.
Finally, Usagi took a deep breath. "Let's go back," she said, standing up and brushing off the sand from her skirt.
Minako nodded, and they started walking back to Usagi's place. The tension between them had shifted, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was like a secret they shared, a secret filled with a mix of excitement and confusion; but above all, trust.
Once they were back at the front of Usagi's place, Usagi turned to Minako. "You're right," she said, and her wide smile was back home on her face as she continued, "I need something else to think about besides Mamo-chan. Thanks for giving me something to think about, Mina," she winked. "I'll see you in school tomorrow!"
Minako made her way down the path to the street, turning back and looking up at the window she knew was Usagi's room. The light flicked on and loud pop music began flowing out the window. Minako smiled to herself. Mission Cheer Up the Princess was a success.
