Chapter Text
Warning: I will go off course from what they really said or what may have happened, this is what I believe would happen, or I may use what has happened. Also, remember this is a Dazatsu fanfic.
(The front cover is cut off; this is what it actually looks like)
A young boy slumped onto the pavement. As he lay there, he wore a plain blue outfit that was ripped and stained. The boy with brown, messy hair lay there like a statue.
The passing of trees swaying in the background, with the grass behind him swaying with the calm breeze. The sounds of soft splashing could be heard in front of the boy, water was running down its path, not stopping anytime soon.
A bridge hung itself over the stream of water, secure and sturdy as it stood its ground above the stream. A barrier of brick and rock wrapped itself around the bridge, making it more secure for usage.
The sunset beamed over the scenery, golden light hit the bridge, grass, and trees, making it look like a golden paradise. As the breeze swayed past, it moved strands of hair from the boy's face, revealing a pair of brown eyes, the brown eyes blinked weakly, slowly blinking each second.
"Delicious canned crab," The boy thought to himself, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse,"
He raised his eyes up, staring at the stream, "I've decided... It's time I finally steal from someone, no holding back now!" He weakly got up from his slumped position and placed a hard foot onto the pavement using all his strength to stand, "The next person I see, I will steal from them!" He declared and looked above the grass, which held a road.
He stood there and closed his eyes, "Now!" He turned around, and a motorcycle flashed by, "Maybe someone slower, ok, the next person!" He turned around once again and waited, "Now!" He turned and spotted soldiers who marched along the road, "I don't think soldiers have wallets on them." He sighed and closed his eyes once again, "This one is the one!" He turned around once again to find a pair of legs floating through the stream.
"T-they'll be fine... right?" He questioned himself, watching the legs floating down the stream, no movement in the legs as they drifted off. "They'll be fine," He repeated to himself, still unsure of what to do.
He noticed the legs twitching, "T-They'll... Argh!" He ends up jumping into the stream to retrieve the body and bring it to shore. The owner of the egs was a man, as he laid on the pavement the boy looked at the man's face, the man was peaceful, many white strands stuck to his soaked face, his hair soaking wet, bangs white and choppy, a long strands of hair went past his chin with a black strand that laid there with the bung of hair.
"Is he alive?" The boy asked and crawled towards the man and placed an ear to his chest, "A heartbeat! Do I need to do mouth-to-mouth?" He looked at the man's face, "He is pretty handsome... HUH? What was that thought!?" He shook his head side to side, trying to get rid of that single thought. He then took a breath and leaned closer to the man's face. Before he could initiate mouth-to-mouth, the man opened his eyes with a fast breath, startling the boy, which made him stumble back.
"You were floating in the stream, I was worried," the boy said in a worried but shocked tone. The man then sighed, "Did he just sigh!?" "Do you know why I was in the stream?" "No,"
"I was trying to kill myself,"
"Suicide!?" Dazai said, instead, scared, he was in amazement.
"Oh? Are you also into suicide?" the man asked, and the boy nodded at him. "So painful or painless?"
"Painless,"
"Wow, I can't believe I found another person who would desire suicide," The man laughed, "Well, nice to meet you..."
"Oh! I'm Dazai Osamu!" He introduced himself as he stood up more formally and bowed to the man. "No need to bow, I'm not some royalty or some popular person,"
"A-ah, ok! Well,l what's your name?" Dazai asks, looking at the man in the face, noticing his eyes, which mirrored the sunset in the background. Those eyes, which held a beautiful purple and yellow, "It's matching," He thought to himself, mesmerized with the sight before him.
The man stood up and placed his hands into his pockets, as the wind blew it blew at a black trench coat that hung to his body, a white shirt underneath with a black tie, a long belt that reached his ankles, black baggy trousers, the trench coat was rolled up at the sleeves showing bandages on his arms, and bandages on his neck.
"My name is Atsushi Nakajima," He introduced, the wind swayed with coat and hair, Dazai couldn't take his eyes off him, he was too stunned for words.
"Atsushi Nakajima, that day from now on I will remember that name," Dazai thought to himself.
Suddenly, another voice could be heard from afar, a loud voice yelled the name, "Atsushi! There you are, you suicidal maniac! How dare you disrupt my schedule! And who thinks it's a good idea to jump into a stream after saying "Oh that stream looks good," And jumps right in!" A man with long blond hair, glasses on the bridge of his nose, wearing smart wear, a yellow waistcoat, and a black undershirt with black trousers.
"Perfect timing! That's my colleague, Kunikida," Atsushi told Dazai, who was staring at Kunikida with curiosity and confusion. Then a loud rumble from the stomach came from Dazai's stomach came, and Atsushi chuckled, "Hungry? Sadly, the stream must have washed up my wallet while I was drifting,"
"Just my luck," Dazai thought to himself and sighed, "Let's get my college to buy you food, what do you want to eat?"
"Crab,"
"Crab?"
"Is that a problem?"
"Not at all, let's go," Atsushi smiles and starts walking across the bridge. Dazai then follows behind, still admiring the man before him.
After walking for a while, they ended up at a restaurant that offered crab on their menu, and they ended up using Kunikida's money, which he was very reluctant about. But afterwards Kunikida sighs and pays for the crab that Dazai is offered to eat. He takes no second to start eating full of joy over eating something he loves.
"I'm not here to feed strays, you unreliable fool," Kunikida spoke, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose while writing in his notebook, which was labeled 'Ideals'. The restaurant was quite fancy, and they were seated in a more secluded area of the restaurant, not wanting to draw attention to themselves. "Also, now we are late, I will have to reschedule our whole schedule."
"Kunikida, don't be so harsh on him; he was starving after all." Atushsi smiles and stares up, "Ooo, that support beam looks lovely."
"Don't even think about hanging yourself on there!" Kunikida spoke in annoyance at Atsushi's antics. Atsushi just laughs, "I'm thinking of the hanging health technique. You know that support beam is actually a really good way to help with that."
"Really?"
"Yeah! It releases muscle aches and shoulder cramps! If you lie your back onto it, then it would help your back so much!" "That would be perfect for me," "Yeah! You should write this down!" Atsushi. Kunikida then quickly gets a pen and his notebook out and starts writing, "I was lying." Kunikida then broke the pen out a pure rage and grabbed Atushsi by his collar and started shaking him violently and strangling him, "You waste of bandages!"
Dazai watches this while eating the crab, bite after bite, watching in entertainment. He had just met them, but they were such lively people that he was grateful for the help they had given him. He stopped eating for a second, looking at the crab in front of him, and a memory played in his mind.
Dazai is kneeling in front of people in white coats, the room dark, only illuminated by the light coming from the outside through the glass. As he kneeled in the light, the people in the dark stood up straight, hands behind their backs; from his view, he couldn't even see their faces. "You are a waste of space." "Get out, you good-for-nothing!" "The world would be a better place if you just died in a ditch somewhere," another spoke, there was no hesitation behind those words, each one cold light the room he kneeled in. He looked up at the people in their white coats.
A man stood in front of the herd, in a similar white coat, as he stepped into the light, showing his face to the kneeling boy, his hair brown, and is a bowlcut hairstyle. "You should just die," The man said
"W-why me? I didn't do anything," Dazai whispered, staring in fear at those lurking over him, tears slowly forming in his eyes.
"Hey! Hey! Earth to Dazai!" A familiar voice spoke, snapping Dazai out of his trace, as he looked at the two men in front of him, one not bothered by this, the other with a worried expression. Atsushi chuckles, "There we go, welcome back, Dazai."
"S-Sorry about that," Dazai muttered, looking down in embarrassment. "Oh yeah, what kind of job do you two do? Since you said that you two are colleagues,"
Kunikida sighs, "Now he's asking questions," and leans back into his chair. "You are too harsh on him, Kunikida! Why are you such a bad guy today?" "I wouldn't be a bad guy if you had just stayed on the schedule!"
"Our work revolves around the military," Atsushi spoke, drinking some tea, Dazai placing the last plate of crab he had eaten stared at them, "Man, that was so good!" "At least show some gratitude for eating on my pay!" He spoke in a serious and annoyed tone staring the the full Dazai who sighed out of pure happiness of having a full belly.
"You two are a real lifesaver. I was starving on the streets just a few minutes ago, and you allowed me to eat my fill even though you don't know me. I even came here from an orphanage, and I've had nothing to eat or sleep since I was kicked out. I thought I would starve to death,"
Atsushi placed his elbows onto the table and joined his fingers as he laid his head onto them he staring at Dazai, "You were kicked out of an orphanage?" "Yes, I was,"
"What for if you don't mind answering," Atsushi asked, staring the Dazai with his full attention. "No need to rush things if you don't want to say anything," Atushsi spoke in a calm voice towards Dazai. He felt comforted by that voice, he felt safe from hearing it. "W-well...-"
"Look Atsushi, we don't have time to help orphans right now, we aren't good guys who do that we are here on business and nothing else, so let's cut the story and move on," Kunikida interrupted, Atsushi pouted at Kunikida and sighed, "Fine, fine let's move on," "Now that I remember you two said you work for the military, what kind of work do you two do?"
Atushsi had his eyes closed and slowly opened them as he pointed his index finger out, "We are private investigators." "Investigators?"
"We don't just save lost kittens and such or cheating spouses, we are gifted investigators, we are the armed detective agency," Kunikida added.
Dazai's eyes widened, flabbergasted by the news, hearing the words come from Kunikida's mouth felt unreal to him; he couldn't believe that he was in front of gifted people, people who have abilities that can break the laws of physics. An agency that was entrusted with cases that the police or military couldn't even handle. They straddled the natural and supernatural.
A sweat drop rolled down his brow, "Oh yeah so about the job you two have been working on, what is it if you don't mind me asking," "Now that you speak about it this job doesn't require any secrecy, it's for the government we are looking for a person who goes under the name of The Nulifier,"
AS soon as Kunikida finished his sentence, Dazai's eyes once widened again, surprise after surprise was written all over his face, not expecting all this new information to appear right in front of him. "The Nulifier..."
"Yes, a person who is known to be able to nullify any ability known to mankind, many people have been after this person, but it seems that they have had no luck finding them or getting to them, but information says that they have come to Yokohama, and we are on the look out for them," Atsushi said closing his eyes once again, "The government has been looking for them for a while now trying to get them under their radar or their control,"
Dazai fell over in his seat, knocking down a few of the plates on the table. "What's wrong Dazai?" "S-sorry I have to go," Dazai quickly crawls for the door, but Kunikida ends up grabbing the back of his collar and lifting him into the air, but Dazai keeps running, "Not so fast, you know something you aren't sharing with us." He then stopped and turned towards them.
"Don't try, you'll only get hurt," fear piercing through his eyes as he spoke with a shaky breath, fear had fully overwhelmed him.
"Interesting, then tell us what you know about The Nulifier."
"I-I can't,"
"Why not?"
"I just can't! You'll just get hurt!"
Atsushi and Kunikida stared at Dazai, who had started fighting and running once again. Kunikida sighed and dropped Dazai's collar, letting him fall to the ground, then he grabbed his arm and held him to the ground. "Look kid, you either pay for the food with your arm or tell us everything!"
The seat stretched against the surface of the floor as Atsushi stood up with his hands inside his pockets, "Now, now, Kunikida, whenever you ask questions, it ends up turning into an interrogation." He slowly walked over to the duo., "You've been talked to about this." Kunikida then gets off Dazai by letting go of his arm and backing away. "Let me give it a try, so Dazai, what do you know about The Nulifier?" he asked as he crouched down to Dazai's level, who was slowly getting up.
After Dazai sat up he placed an arm over his shoulder of the arm which had been sued to stop him from moving, focusing his attention forwards not even looking at Atsushi in the eye, "People kept attacking the orphanage, saying "Aquire The Nulifier!" or "Don't let The Nulifier escape!" "Capture The Nulifier!" This caused major issues, to the point that the children had to be locked underground, and the orphanage had to go into full hiding. We couldn't even play outside anymore, and we could barely acquire food."
"Well, no one died, but the orphanage was already on a tight budget, and I got kicked out so that they would have one less mouth to feed. I don't have a home because of The Nulifier."
As he says that the imagery of the workers at the orphanage appears in his mind, one after another saying their lines:
"Get out, you good-for-nothing!"
"The world would be a better place if you died in a ditch somewhere."
"Leaches like you are not welcome here!"
"You'll never find a place where you do belong,"
"Just go! I hope you rot in hell!"
Dazai looked down in shame from what he's been told, "What a tragic tale you have there," Atushsi was sat with his chair's back in front of him as he leaned against the frame, and Kunikida was standing with his hands behind his back, Dazai was sitting on another chair across form them.
"Now, back to The Nulifier. How are they dangerous?"
"Well, wherever I go, The Nulifier is around. I can hear people yelling to go after The Nulifier, I always have to run from each location; it's like they are tracking me, hunting me down, and I don't understand why."
"And recently, when I was walking around the Sudanami neighbourhood, I could hear people screaming for The Nulifier,"
Then a dimly lit street appears, poor lighting lit through through the lamps, but the brightest light was appearing from eh moonlight of the moon, shining above them all brighter than them all, blue and beautiful as it stayed stationary in the night sky, Dazai walks passed a shereic mirror suddenly after walking past it shouting could be heard "GET THE NULIFIER!" In an instant, he started running far away from the yelling, trying to escape 'The Nulifier. ' The moon hung over him as he ran.
"My instinct tells me they have come to the city to find me."
"When was the last time you saw The Nulifier?" Atushi asked, sitting in the same position from earlier, not moving an inch.
"Umm, I think 4 days ago in Sudanami, yeah, that sounds about right,"
"That sounds right," Kunikida had opened his notebook up, as he opened it, Atusshi had turned his attention towards Kunikida, waiting for the results to be announced, "A report of The Nulifier was found 2 weeks ago, and then 4 days ago in Sudanami." He then closed his notebook. Kunikida and Atusshi's attention went back to Dazai.
"Hmm, Dazai, are you free tonight?"
Shivers went down Dazai's spine, "I have a bad feeling about this," He thought to himself, looking at Atsushi, who was innocently smiling at him.
"You being The Nulifier's target gives us a good opportunity, so!" Atushsi got up from his seat and grabbed Dazai's hands, "Would you help us find The Nulifier?"
"I-I..."
"Come on! It's the least you could do after eating all of that food we bought for you."
Dazai diverted his gaze to the side, not wanting to stare into the male's sunset eyes; those eyes were hypnotizing; he felt like he couldn't say no to the look in those eyes were giving him.
He then hands Kunikdia a piece of folded paper, "Oh! And Kunikida, please give this to the agency."
"The two of you are going to catch The Nulifier? You should confirm this information first."
"It will be fine, trust me."
Kunikida then grabs the folded piece of paper and reads it in front of himself,
"W-Will I be able to die there?" Dazai muttered
"Huh? You want to die?"
"Yes, I want to die,"
"If you wanted to die, then why didn't you let those who are after The Nulifier accidentally kill you?"
"W-well, I desire to do a double suicide!"
"Oh god," Kunikida then let's out a huge sigh, "I can't believe my luck, first my schedule, now I meet Atsushi 2.0
"Interesting, any preference?"
"A beautiful woman,"
"Hmm, that could be sorted out, so if you join us then I will help you find a beautiful woman, how does that sound?"
"Yes,"
Afterwards they had made it to a bunch of warehouses, each warehouse lined up after another, the sky dark but lit up by the city light, blue, yellow, purple danced into the sky blinding the darkness from the sky, clouds hvoered above shielding the sky of the light. The warehouses had lamps on the side of each door.
Atsushi was sitting on top of a crate, his legs crossed, holding a book, while Dazai was sitting on another crate with his legs dangling off the crate. Little light came into the warehouse.
"Hey, Atushsi, sorry to interrupt, but what are you reading?"
"A good book,"
"I'm surprised you can read in this darkness."
"I have excellent night vision. Plus, I've read it before I know everything that happens in this book."
"Can I see what it is?"
"Sure thing," Atushsi then showed Dazai the book's title, 'A Guide to suicide'
"That's an actual book!?" Dazai asked excitedly
"Ah, a connoisseur of a good book, I see," Dazai nods excitedly, making Atusshi chuckle. Dazai sits next to Atsushi as they read the book together.
"Have you ever tried that one?" Dazai asked, pointing to one of the suicide methods, "Mhm," "And you've survived it!?"
"Yep, sadly, it didn't kill me."
"Are you planning to die with anyone?" Atsushi then places a hand to his chin and thinks, "Hmm, not sure, I'm just interested in dying without experiencing any pain."
"Ah, I understand." Dazai then looks away from the book, remembering why he's here in the first place. This thought made him fearful, he couldn't stop shaking.
Atushsi then pats Dazai on the head, "It's ok, even though I don't look tough, I am with the agency for a good reason."
"Well then, it seems like it's finally time,"
"They're here!?"
"Yep, just in time." Atushi then jumps down from the crate and walks towards the window, "Wait, Atsushi, what are you doing!?" As the moon shone through the window, something happened. Atsushi welcomed the moonlight with open arms, and suddenly, a ring of words appeared around him. "My ability is 'Beast beneath the moonlight'." With those being his last words, his body fully changed to a full tiger, a white tiger, stood under the moonlight.
The tiger's eyes shone like gold, claws razor sharp, teeth ready to eat, fur flowed smoothly. A loud growl came from the tiger's mouth, and it ran at Dazai with full force.
"Atsushi!" Dazai screamed and ran away, trying to get away from the tiger at full cost, "I don't want to die like this! I wanted to die with a beautiful woman!" He kept running through the warehouse, and the tiger rampaged through the warehouse after Dazai, breaking crate after crate. leaving only dust behind.
"I thought everything would be ok! You said it would be ok! Atsushi!" Dazai was backed up against a wall, breathing heavily, eyes widened in fear, he didn't know what to do, he was stuck, He was going to die.
He shut his eyes and placed his arms up in defence, as the tiger approached him the tiger ran at him at full speed and was ready to swipe. The tiger then swiped it's claws in quick motion.
Nothing happened.
Dazai didn't know what happened, then a hand placed on top of his head and a chuckle, "Looks like we found 'The Nulifier. '" Dazai instantly opened his eyes, recognizing that voice. He knew who it was.
Atsushi stood in front of him with a smile."No need to be scared, I'm here, Dazai." Dazai instantly tackled him into a hug, "You scared the hell out of me! Why?" Atsushi stroked his hair, "Because, this is the only way to allow you to accept that you, Dazai Osamu, are The Nulifie.,"
Dazai widened his eyes in surprise, "I-I'm The Nulifier?"
"Yep, Dazai Osamu The Nulifier,"
"T-That means..." Dazai clung onto Atushsi's shirt for support, "Take all the time you need." Due to all the shock, he ended up passing out
Kunikida then came running into the warehouse, "You're late, Kunikida. I've found The Nulifier,"
"You mean it's the boy?"
"Mhm, the one and only,"
"Ah geez, then what was up with this note then?"
"The Nulifier will be in the 15th district's warehouse to secure the perimeter so they can't escape."
"You left out some details. Next time, tell me, I even brought agents who weren't even on all,"
Three shadowy figures came walking over, "First round is on you."
"Hey!" A boy wearing blue skipped over
A woman wearing a plain button-up shirt, a black tie, and a long black shirt, "Please tell me there are no casualties talk about boring," she has a bob cut wearing a golden butterfly in her hair.
"You're getting better at solving cases, Atsushi, but my logical skills will solve the big one," A man wearing a cape, a vest, a white shirt underneath, and a purple tie, a hat that sat on top of his black hair.
The boy wearing blue then crouches down in front of Dazai and Atsushi, "So what should we do with him? He didn't know he could do this, did he?" The boy has blond hair and a straw hat that hangs around his neck.
"Well, that's what it seems to me, well then, Atsushi, he's been wanted by the government for a while now, what's your take on it?" Kunikida asked, looking at his notebook
Atsushi laughs, "I already made my decision." He stares at Dazai, who is fast asleep, still clinging to him. "We are going to make him one of us."
