Work Text:
“Honestly Ren, I don’t get why you are so worried, anything you could wear is so much better than what they see in District 12, especially compared to that old man that was before you. I swear his suits predated Panem itself!”
Ren’s sister was not wrong, he’d been making a mess of their apartment with clothes strewn everywhere. But he couldn’t just pick anything.
“It’s my first day as a Capitol escort, and I’ll be on screens all across the country. This is a momentous occasion, I can't just wear my everyday getup, now can I?”
“You are so excessively dramatic. It’s District 12, no one cares really, and you know that full well. You act like this is the thing that’s gonna change our lives when it’s not. It's just another way for the Gamemakers to say that you are not on their level! An insult to anyone to be assigned there, really.”
“Why must you be so negative? I know they don’t like me, but this is my chance to show them what I’m really worth.”
Prisca shighed, when his brother decided that he wanted something there was really no way to have him change his mind. Like when he’d decided that he had to become the host for the games, despite definitely not being in the social class that would allow him to get there. He’d worked hard and now he was finally stepping into the industry of the Games.
They would not be kind to him there, and would not think of him as good enough. They both knew it, it was no use dwelling on the matter.
Her eyes fell on an old headpiece, a golden crown Ren had worn in an old school play about forgotten kings.
“Why don’t you be a king?”
Ren stared at her in confusion, wondering what she meant with king, as there hadn’t been one in so long the concept was almost mythical to them.
“Wear the costume you had when you played that old mad king in school, no one would recognise it and it’s just the right amount of fancy, elegant and extravagant.”
The mad King Lear, now if that wasn’t poetic, he didn’t know what would be. An idea so out there it might just work. Ren ran around the room collecting all he would need for the complete look.
Black dress pants, finely embroidered with patterns of the night sky, a nice white shirt, with just the right amount of ruffles, and a fancy red cape with white fur lining the edges.
“You are a genius! This is gonna look beautiful.”
Ren said, dawning the cape and twirling it around so it would catch the wind.
His sister picked up the crown and made an elegant gesture of putting it on his head, it looked truly regal with Ren’s long hair.
“There you are, King Ren. Time to begin your rule of the stuck-up, old-timey and non-believers!”
“Why yes, they shall soon regret not having faith in me, kind Princess.”
And so they spent the morning laughing and playing pretend like they hadn’t since childhood, overpacking Ren’s bag for his two day trip out to District 12, until he had to leave for his train later that afternoon.
