Work Text:
Pokey resigned himself to the corner of the room, tapping rhythmically on the plastic cup in his hands. The sounds of music and people’s voices overwhelmed his senses, enough to make him fully regret his decision. Ness had wandered off a while ago, it was his party after all, but that also meant Pokey was completely alone. He should've never come in the first place, it was a stupid decision on his part. Ness had approached him at the end of the school day, spouting a quick “party at my house!” before running off. Pokey couldn't just decline, Ness was (supposedly) expecting him. Plus, what else did Pokey have to do?
The bass of music shook the liquid in his cup. The same liquid he poured thirty minutes ago and still hadn't taken a sip of, not that he was going to, of course. It was probably some cheap booze Ness was able to snag from the store, and Pokey wasn't a drinker anyway.
A sigh escaped his lips as the idea of leaving inevitably crossed his mind. Ness probably wouldn't mind it, he was too busy with his other friends.
Pokey’s thoughts came crashing to a halt as he felt an arm thing itself over his shoulder.
“Heyy~!” The voice was loud, and Pokey recognized it immediately, “How’s my favorite guy doing?!”
“I’m fine, Ness,” Pokey said, trying not to spill his cup as Ness stumbled into him. The younger boy smiled and let out a huff. He glanced down at Pokey's cup.
“You’re not drinking?” Ness’s voice was wavy.
“Oh, no.” Pokey said, still trying to stay upright, “Not a big fan of alcohol.”
Ness didn't seem to comment on the fact he’d gotten a cup anyway. Instead, they stood there for a good few minutes, Ness using Pokey as a means to stay upright. It was peaceful, albeit awkward, and the noise around them was enough to shatter their eardrums. But to them, at that moment, they were the only other people that mattered. Eventually, Ness seemed to have gained his senses back, unwrapping his arm from Pokey and balancing himself.
“Lets go outside, m’kay?” The way Ness said it sounded more like a statement and less like a question.
Pokey couldn't even get a word in before Ness grabbed the cup out of his hands, setting it down on whatever flat stable surface was near him, and practically dragging Pokey out the door.
As soon as the door shut behind them, Pokey let out a sigh of relief. Even if the sound of music and whatever the drunk teenagers inside were yelling about was still able to be heard, it was quieter, muffled by the night sky.
Ness only got a few steps before he collapsed onto the grass. He sat back, gazing up at the stars. Pokey followed suit, allowing his eyes to wander up to the stars above.
“Look!” Ness pointed up, “I think that's Scorpious!”
Pokey followed his hand, and smiled, “Yeah… maybe.” Granted, Pokey knew it probably wasn't , given that it was the middle of fall and they were smack dab in the middle of the northern hemisphere. But Pokey didn't feel like ruining Ness’s drunken dream.
Ness let out a huff, something reminiscent of a laugh, before he let his hand fall back down. Then a silence surrounded the two, staring up at the stars as if they were hypnotized. There was something about the light of the stars that brought a sweet feeling to the two of them.
Pokey could see something move in the corner of his eye. He turned his head, following the movement, only to see Ness staring right at him. He was smiling, the type of smile you'd only see from someone after they were three drinks in. Pokey just blinked, confused.
“You’re very pretty.,” Ness stumbled out, and Pokey’s face went hot.
“Uh, thank you, Ness…” He paused for a moment, “You’re pretty too.”
Ness let out a huff, pleased at Pokey’s rather non-creative compliment, but it was a compliment nonetheless.
“You really think that?” Ness leaned in a bit closer.
Pokey swallowed hard, but relented, “Do you really think that about me? Or are you just drunk enough to start lying?”
Ness smiled, “I dunno, maybe you’ll find out.”
Pokey was going to ask what that meant, but his thoughts were slammed to a stop by Ness leaning in, and promptly kissing him. Pokey let out a choked noise, clearly surprised. His breathing got heavier, and his face got redder (which should've been practically impossible, and yet it did, in fact, happen). He slowly brought up a hand to Ness’ cheek, and kissed him back. It wasn't how Pokey had imagined it, Ness being a little more… aggressive, probably due to the immense amount of alcohol running through his veins that had made its way up into his head. But it was nice, it was warm. Pokey didn't know if it was a good kiss by any means, he had nothing to compare it to, but to him, in that moment, it felt like the best thing in the world.
After that, the kiss could have lasted longer than five seconds before Ness pulled away. Pokey had to blink a few moments, his eyes blurry with a kiss that, to him, felt like it lasted hours. When his eyes finally adjusted, he was met with the absolutely horrified face of Ness. It looked like he’d sobered up in moments, now very aware of his actions.
“I’m so sorry.” He spoke so fast it was practically one word, “I didn't mean too.”
Pokey stumbled around his words, “No! No you're fine, don’t-”
“I should go,” Ness interrupted, stumbling his way to his feet, to which Pokey quickly followed.
“Dude, cmon,” Pokey spoke firmly, grabbing the younger boy's wrist before he could walk away.
Ness looked away for a moment, back towards the house, before letting out a breath, “Listen, if I just say I was drunk can we leave it at that?”
The pressure on Ness’ wrist subsided as Pokey let go, both of their arms falling back to their sides.
“Is that what you want?” Pokey’s voice was quiet, barely escaping his lips.
“No…” Ness paused, before the smallest smile formed on his face, “But I mean, it's true…”
Pokey let out a huff, “You don’t seem very drunk now.”
Ness shrugged, “I sobered up?”
The blonde rolled his eyes, but decided to pause their bantering for the meantime.
“Let’s go inside, it's getting cold out” Pokey took Ness’ hand in his, to which Ness happily obliged.
“Yeah… Plus, it's probably time for everyone to go home now anyway.” Ness added as he began to walk towards the house, but Pokey stopped him.
“Hey, this means a lot more than just nothing. And we will be talking about it later, alright?” His voice was firm, but soft enough to let Ness know he wasn't really angry.
“And what if it was just a goof?” Ness teased.
“Sober thoughts are drunk actions, dude”
“Oh shut up.”
The two laughed together as they approached the house. The noise from before now right in front of them. Ness reached to open the door, but paused right before he turned the handle.
“Wanna sleep over tonight?”
Pokey smiled, “I’d love to.”
