In The Quiet Moments Of The Night

Summary:

The night was peaceful, their breathing synchronized.

Cale's mind drifted through memories of battles and strategy, the words from the book echoing in his thoughts.

Yet, the warmth and safety of Alberu's presence soothed his weary mind.

The villa was their sanctuary, a place where they could lay aside the burdens of their roles and simply be together

Work Text:

"Alright, just one more page," Cale murmured to himself, his eyes scanning the worn text of the ancient tome.

The words danced before him, weaving a tale of battles and heroes long gone.

The candle beside him flickered, casting a warm glow across the room that danced in the reflection of his reddish-brown eyes.

His long, red hair was unbound, brushing against the pages as he turned them with a gentle touch.

The quiet hum of the night outside the Super Rock Villa was a comforting backdrop to his solitude.

A soft sigh broke the silence, and Cale looked up to find Alberu standing in the doorway, his blond hair a stark contrast to his usual brown.

The necklace that held his true form gleamed under the candlelight, a secret known only to their family.

"You're still up," Alberu said with a sleepy smile, his voice a gentle caress in the quiet room.

Cale's eyes lit up at the sight of his lover.

"Couldn't sleep without saying goodnight," he replied, setting the book aside.

Alberu padded over, his bare feet silent on the cool marble floor.

He climbed into bed, his movements careful not to disturb the neatly folded blankets.

With a yawn, he nestled into Cale's side, his head coming to rest on the retired Supreme Commander's shoulder.

"What are you reading?" Alberu asked, his blue eyes peeking open to gaze at the book's spine.

Cale chuckled, stroking Alberu's hair.

"The history of the continents," he said. "Thought it might help me understand the ancient time's strategies better."

Alberu's eyes grew heavier with each word Cale spoke, his mind drifting towards the sweet embrace of slumber.

"Mm," he mumbled, his eyes slipping closed.

Cale felt the weight of his head increase slightly, and he knew his Emperor was falling asleep.

He waited for Alberu's breathing to even out, then leaned in to place a gentle kiss on his forehead.

With a soft smile, Cale resumed his reading, occasionally glancing down at the peaceful face beside him.

The weight of Alberu's head grew heavier, and Cale felt a pang of affection.

The man who ruled the Roan Empire with such fierce intelligence was now a warm, pliant presence, utterly relaxed in his arms.

It was moments like these that Cale cherished the most—moments where they could just be themselves, without the weight of their titles or the worries of their positions.

As Alberu's breathing deepened, Cale marked his page and set the book aside.

He carefully shifted Alberu onto the pillow, making sure he was comfortable, then pulled the blankets over them both. With a final look at the sleeping man, Cale reached for the candle and blew it out.

The room was plunged into darkness, and he whispered a soft "Goodnight," knowing Alberu was beyond hearing.

He nestled into the warmth of their shared bed, feeling the quiet strength of the man beside him, and allowed sleep to claim him too.

Hours passed, and the first hints of dawn began to seep through the curtains. Cale stirred, the light playing across his features as he woke to find Alberu still sleeping soundly.

He watched him, the way the early light painted him in shades of gold and shadow, and felt a swell of love and protectiveness.

Carefully, so as not to wake him, Cale reached for the necklace around Alberu's neck, his fingers tracing the intricate design before unclasping it.

With the necklace removed, Alberu's true appearance began to emerge.

His skin darkened to its natural brown, and his hair grew darker, curling slightly as it fell around his face. Cale kissed him gently, his hand moving to cradle the side of Alberu's head.

The transformation was complete, and the man he knew and loved lay there, vulnerable and beautiful in the early morning light.

They had promised to keep each other's secrets, and this was Alberu's most profound one. The truth of his heritage was a burden that Cale bore willingly, a silent testament to the depth of their trust.

As the room grew lighter, Cale felt Alberu's eyes open, looking up at him with a sleepy smile.

"Thank you," Alberu murmured, his voice thick with sleep.

Cale leaned in, their foreheads touching. "For what?"

"For everything," Alberu said, his eyes searching Cale's. "For being here, for understanding, for loving me as I am."

They shared a quiet moment, the unspoken words between them speaking louder than any declaration.

Then, with a sigh, Alberu closed his eyes once more, his head nestling back into the crook of Cale's shoulder.

The warmth of his body and the steady beat of his heart lulled Cale back into a light doze.

As the sun rose fully, painting the sky with a soft palette of pinks and oranges, Cale felt a gentle nudge.

Alberu was fully awake now, his eyes a soft brown, filled with affection. "I should get ready," he said, sitting up and stretching.

Cale nodded, watching as Alberu slipped out of bed.

He reached for the necklace, holding it out to him.

Alberu took it, his expression a mix of resignation and gratitude as he put it back on, his appearance shifting back to the blond-haired, blue-eyed man the world knew.

They had a day ahead of them filled with duties and responsibilities, but for now, in this brief, intimate moment, they were simply Cale and Alberu, lovers and confidants, sharing a quiet understanding that transcended the constraints of their titles.
