There they were.
On that very same cliff, feet dangling off the edge, just as they were 6 years ago.
Mualani let out a soft sigh. “Can you believe it? I mean, our sixth anniversary! It still felt like only yesterday when you confessed to me.”
Kinich let out a quiet hum in response. He kept composed, trying to focus on having this moment together with his gorgeous girlfriend, but it was getting increasingly difficult not to sweat his ass off. Today was the day, he’d decided. He had been hyping himself up ever since their fifth anniversary. Every time he thought the moment was right, he couldn’t bring himself to get the words out. What if she said no? What if she’d be disgusted?
Kinich knew far better. He knew Mualani would never do such a thing, but still, his insecurities gnawed away at him from the inside. He didn’t want to lose Mualani. Hell, he had no clue how he’d even get out of bed if she wasn’t there, by his side, when he woke up.
“Babe?”
He looked up at her, trying his best not to let her see his nervousness. Even though he knew it was futile, considering both her concerned tone and the fact she always saw straight through him, he still tried. “Yes?”
“I asked you something.”
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t hear… I was just a little lost in thought.”
Mualani tilted her head in that cute way that made Kinich’s heart melt every time without fail. It almost made him throw out the question right there and then, but he held back.
“Thinking about what?”
“Oh, uh… Just… Things.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Kinich sighed. He knew whatever attempts at trying to change the subject wouldn’t work, so he had two options. One: make up an excuse on the spot and wait for the right moment. Or two: tell her the truth.
He went for the first.
“Just marvelling at how lucky I am to have you in my life, y’know?” The lie slipped out with ease, and he reassuringly squeezed her hand to make sure his message came across.
“Aww, babe, that is so sweet!” She threw her arms around his neck, pressing herself against him. Kinich’s hands instinctively rose to hold her by the waist. Mualani pressed herself further against him, at this point straddling his lap with her thighs. And Kinich hated how much she affected him, in a moment that was supposed to be sweet and wholesome, his dick couldn’t help but throb at the intimate position. But he had to hold himself together.
“K-Kinich?”
Uh-oh.
Kinich had no idea what she was about to say, but the slight stutter in her voice accompanied by the use of his real name instead of ‘babe’ or ‘love’ made his heart stop. Something was wrong, so wrong. Had she noticed that she turned him on just by sitting on his lap? Had he ruined the moment?
Realisation only clicked when she used her knee to nudge the cube shaped object in his pocket.
“Whacha got there?”
Kinich swallowed.
There was no backing out now. Damn it, he had prepared so much for this moment. He was planning to go down on one knee and do an entire speech, but he couldn’t push her off of him just to keep things traditional. So, there went nothing…
“Mualani… I love you.”
Even though he said it so many times in the past, he still heard how her breath hitched. He grabbed both her hands in his, his thumbs rubbing soothing circles on the backs of her hands.
“We’ve been dating for 6 years now, and… Archons… Mualani, I want to stay with you. I want you to stay with me. Forever. I… I want to spend the rest of our lives together. I know there may be some obstacles in our way, but I believe we can overcome those together. You’re the most wonderful, most gorgeous, most lovely woman I’ve ever met and to have you here, knowing you’re mine…”
He released her left hand to reach down to his pocket.
“I want us to… I want…”
Kinich struggled to find the words he needed to express exactly what he wanted. But he knew so damn well what he wanted.
He wanted her to say yes.
He slowly pulled the red velvet box out of his pocket, presenting it to her. She let out a shuddering gasp, her first sign of life ever since she began holding her breath at the start of Kinich’s love speech. Kinich easily opened the lid, revealing the sparkling ring inside. It was gorgeous, a beautiful piece of craftsmanship only someone as skilled as Xilonen could produce.
The purest gold, with a beautiful piece of magical crystal imbedded in the top. It truly was one of a kind, and Mualani stared at it for what felt like forever.
All the while, even though the ring was already out in the open to see, Kinich still couldn’t get the question over his lips. Dammit, why did he have to shut down just then?
“Kinich…” Mualani choked out, her voice sounding like it was on the verge of breaking. She looked up at him, tears already forming in the corners of her eyes. Kinich couldn’t keep her waiting any longer.
“Mualani… Will you marry me?”
She couldn’t speak.
She wanted to say yes, but she was afraid she’d just break down if she even so much as tried to speak. So she nodded. Frantically. Almost so fast it gave her a headache.
“Y-Yes! Yes, yes, I’ll-”
Mualani’s sob cut her off, and with the biggest smile on her face, she let the tears flow. She could hear Kinich’s sigh of relief, his arms wrapping back around her and holding her to his chest.
And there they sat.
Atop that very same cliff where, 6 years ago, Kinich had told her how he really felt.
It was so sweet Mualani’s heart ached.
Their shared sobs were mingled with the occasional huff of ecstatic laughter. Mualani couldn’t feel happier in that moment. Wrapped in his boyfriend- no, Fiancé’s arms, it was as if the whole world could just disappear and she wouldn’t care.
Kinich tilted her head up for her eyes to meet his. They just stared into each other’s eyes for a moment, got lost in them, before Kinich’s eyes went down to the ring. Still in the box. He carefully took it out and grabbed onto Mualani’s left hand. Her heart was pounding rapidly in her ear, adrenalin coursing through every vein in her body as Kinich slid the gorgeous ring onto her ring finger.
And there it was.
The official proof. A testament to the bond they shared.
It was only then that realisation fully hit them both.
They were going to get married.
“I… Kinich… I’m gonna be your wife…”
It still sounded surreal, even in her own ears, but it was real. They were engaged. The ring on her finger solid proof of that fact.
“And I’m gonna be your husband.” He whispered back in response.
Previously, Kinich had dubbed the day that he confessed to her as ‘the best day of his life’. Now? He knew for certain that this was the new number one. But he also knew that this day wouldn’t keep that title for all that long, of course, considering their wedding day was still upcoming…
And they couldn’t be happier.
