Work Text:

The sun set as you and your digimon setted up camp. Upon the idea that the little light that would remain in a couple of minutes would only get you more lost in the infinite forest that laid before you -which was known as “jungle zone”, information that Wisemon had provided- your team had decided it would be a good opportunity to rest, thus avoiding unnecessary travel.

You had spent several months in the digital world, incessantly looking for a way out that would lead you to the human realm, back home. In the meantime, though, you had met plenty of digimon, some of which had chosen to accompany you during your tedious journey.

Once finished, Wisemon returned to the fusion loader, leaving you with your other partner; Beelzemon. You see, amongst the few humans that fall into the digital  world there seems to be a saying, a prophecy if you like, that every human seems to have a digimon partner of their own. Soulbound, human and digimon are destined to meet one way or another, connecting at first glance. Like two sides of the same coin, every human “tamer” appears to have their own digimon “partner” sooner or later.

This idea was first introduced to you when you first arrived to this world by a humble Jijimon that you had stumbled upon, however, mind infested by scepticism, you were reluctant to believe such tale. That was, of course, before you had met Beelzemon, or rather Impmon. The digimon and you had felt an instant connection, leading to the formation of what you had called a “truce” back then, despite later evolving into a deeper friendship, the same way Impmon had evolved into Beelzemon.

A newly-lit campfire laid before you as you sat next to each other, the both of you quiet, exhausted due to the day's journey.

-”’You hungry?”- he unpromptedly questioned.

-”No, not really.”- was all you gave as an answer- “What about you?”

-”Just tired.”

-”Same over here.”- you stated, culminating your statement  with a yawn.

Swiftly, Beelzemon extended his wings, pulling you in for a kind of side hug with the wing closer to you. You had always been amazed by the softness that his feathers carried, the gentleness with which they tickled you as they embraced you closer to him; leaving you in a state of peace and comfort. Same could be said for the digimon, who now leaned into you, drowsing given the tiredness he carried.

In the quiet of the night you began to ponder. What would happen once you found a way to get home? Would you have to let all the ties you had made on this world go? Would you have to let him go? Such inquiries had perturbed your rests for the last couple of days, the same way they were resurfacing in such moment of tranquility as this one. You hugged Beelzemon, to which he, half asleep, responded with a movement of his arm, shifting it to be on your shoulders, enhancing the embrace.

Upon the sign of wakefulness, you asked, reluctantly ;

-”What will we do? When we find a way to get back home, I mean.”- Because it was no longer an I . You were not alone in your search. It was a we . and that was the very thing that was taking away your sleep.

Several seconds passed, leading to the conclusion that you may have overestimated Beelzemon’s alertness. Just when the answer was no longer expected did he reply.

-”Right now, trying to guess what will happen is futile. No matter how much you overthink that stuff, it will always turn out differently. Trust me.”

-”Do you think digimon can live in the human world?”- You looked at his face, the digimon’s gaze fixated on the horizon, informative on his reflective state.

-”We can only hope.” He blandly announced, thus concluding.-”But we better not cloud our minds with such negativity. There’s still a long way until we have to face those decisions, after all.”- Yet, having stated a lack of interest in the issue, his factions betrayed him. You could see how his frown enlarged at the thought of your indefinite separation, shattering your heart with the realization of how much the feeling was reciprocated.

Some minutes had passed, both of you absorbed in your own concerns, when Beelzemon decided to break the silence.

-”We should try to sleep. There’s lots of walking to do tomorrow if we want to reach the main village in this zone.”

However, it took him a simple glimpse of you to figure that you were already fast asleep, reclining into his wings. Soon enough he dozed off as well.
