“Oh, baby look!” Athena called out to Bobby as they walked back to their car from breakfast. It was their little tradition once a month to go out after church, and this morning, Athena had chosen a Tex-Mex place in cute neighborhood nearby. But as they emerged, happy after chilaquiles and a breakfast burrito, Athena spotted signage for a flea market.
“We could look for things for our new home,” she hummed to him in a sing song tone of voice. She knew he couldn’t resist when she mentioned the house they were building. Bobby, ever the planner, seemed to be more excited than she was when it came to furnishing, to building what their life would look like together for the next 50 years in their home. His face broke out in a wide smile.
“I mean, we do still need a new dresser…and I was hoping to get something special for the living room. A statement piece of sorts.”
“A statement piece?” Athena questioned with a cocked eyebrow as she watched Bobby talk with his hands. He had been watching all these home decorating shows, getting advice from everyone at work, and even started building a vision board—which mostly looked like one of those crime solving boards he always put together on a tough case Athena was working on. May had tried to show him Pinterest, but said he couldn’t “visualize the space” if he didn’t lay it out like it would look on each room.
“Yeah, you know? Something to tie the space together. Something to draw your eye around the room.”
“Well, as long as that’s a yes, then let’s go find you a statement piece.
They walked over, swaying slightly to the sound of live music coming from somewhere within the maze of stalls. It was really quite full, with all kinds of vendors from food to furniture to fashion.
They didn’t leave with a statement piece, but they did manage to find Athena a new vanity. And seeing how she smiled in the mirror when she sat down in front of it was the only statment Bobby needed in his life. That smile would always draw his eye. And he couldn’t wait to see that smile every day for the rest of his life.
