The Promise Before Moonlight

Summary:

At a school for students with supernatural abilities, Kyo is a moon boy with untapped potential, having yet to awaken his power until his final year. Ren, a third-year student and an alien, has always been kind and protective of him. As Kyo’s powers emerge, graduation draws near, bringing with it the unavoidable separation. How will their love survive the vast distance of the cosmos?

Work Text:

At the entrance ceremony of the Academy for Superpowers, Kyo stood at the very front of the crowd, hands stuffed into his pockets, his face scrunched up in frustration.

"This place is way too noisy... full of idiots."

He muttered this under his breath, but his eyes were secretly fixed on the senior standing at the back of the crowd—Ren. The one rumored to be an alien, always gentle, top of his class, and so handsome he was practically perfect.

When Ren's gaze met his, Kyo immediately turned his head away, but his ears were burning red, like they had been scorched by the moonlight.

"You came, Kyo." Ren’s voice was as soft as the gentlest nebula in the cosmos. "I've been waiting for you for a long time."

"Idiot, who's telling you to wait... it's your fault," Kyo muttered softly, but still followed him closely.

He was the Moon Boy. Kyo never liked to talk about it because everyone knew that when the Moon Boys graduated, they would return to the moon and never come back. And right now, Kyo was still short, with no powers at all, looking like just an ordinary little kid. But Ren, from the very beginning, recognized him, stayed by his side, and was overly gentle.

Time flowed like the galaxy.

One night, after a full moon, Kyo woke up to find that he had grown ten centimeters taller, and his eyes were glowing with a silvery light. His powers—gravity manipulation and the ability to control his own personal time flow—had finally awakened. This meant that he was only one step away from "graduating."

"I don't want to graduate." Kyo sat on the rooftop of the dorm, staring at the night sky. Ren sat beside him, silent for a long time before speaking.

"But that’s your place, isn’t it?"

"And what about you? What will you do?"

Ren looked at him, his eyes filled with a sorrow that seemed to have crossed light years.

"I’ll wait for you," he said. "No matter if it's on Earth or in the deep starry seas."

Kyo pushed him hard, gritting his teeth and growling, "Idiot Ren... didn’t you say you would graduate first and then take me away? Why is it that I have to leave?"

"Because I love you." Ren reached out and grabbed Kyo's hand, holding it tightly. "So I want you to finish your journey. Then—no matter how far I have to travel across the stars—I’ll come to pick you up."

Tears finally fell from Kyo's eyes. He knew this day would come, but he didn’t expect to not want to leave so much.

On graduation day, Kyo stood before the Moon Gate, his slightly long blue hair fluttering in the wind. He was no longer the small, tough boy from before. He turned around, and in front of everyone's surprised gaze, he reached out and grabbed Ren’s tie, pulling him close.

"Wait for me. Idiot."

He kissed Ren, a kiss so deep that even the moonlight began to sparkle.

As he disappeared into the silver light, Ren softly whispered:

"I will always wait for you, Kyo."
