You needed to sleep, you were so exhausted but you didn't want to. You were cuddled up into your small bed with Kakashi, a common occurence ever since he had been all but living at your place. You had told him from the beginning you wouldn't condone him sleeping on the couch or the floor and since he didn't approve the same for you, your solution had been to share a bed. At first it had been somewhat awkward but by now, it felt normal.
Kakashis arm was heavy, loosely draped over your waist. It was dark but you could still trace the many scars that littered his body. Every small ridge in his otherwise almost unfairly smooth skin. Your fingertips gently ran over his arm.
Naruto was warm against your back, sleeping soundly, luckily. The boy was sometimes a real nightmare. You and Kakashi didn't rarely spend sleepless night, trying to calm him.
You hadn't noticed Kakashis eyes on you until you felt more than heard a low, quiet chuckle come from him. Your head shifted a little, looking up at him with an ever so slight tilt, that indicated a question why are you laughing? The moonlight fell perfectly through the window above the bed.
You loved the window above the bed. The light always shone so perfectly, almost cinematically through it. Just like it did now.
It hit Kakashis messy head of silver hair, making strands of it look white. The moonlight hit his face in perfect angles. His lashes cast shadows over his cheekbones. Gosh, he was so pretty. Seeing him not wearing his mask felt a little like a treat after a long day. His lips were soft and slightly flushed with a light pink color. The mole below them, only served to make them look more plump.
"You should sleep." He muttered. "Don't wanna." You whispered back just as quiet. "Hey, I even put away my book to not procrastinate our sleep," he chuckled "so you should sleep. It's hard being a mother, you need all the strength you can get." He whispered. "Would you believe me if I told you I was too cold to sleep?" I attempted but I already could tell his answer from the quirk of his mouth. "You're too cold? But you have the man right at your back. Naruto is a damn heater." He huffed out a laugh. "But fine, if you really are too cold I can always scooch a little closer." He offered, as if he wasn't already pressed up against you. Without awaiting an answer from your part, he shifted even closer, threading a leg through yours. Your head was buried in his collarbone. "Better?" He asked and you hummed a confirmation into his skin. It really was better. You were warm. Your chest felt warm. It felt so good to be able to just cuddle into him and let yourself be protected by your best friend. You knew he would. Always. In these moments you actually felt like a teenager, rather than a mother. "Think you can sleep now?" He whispered into your hair. "I'll make miso soup with eggplant for you tomorrow." You whispered back in lieu of a yes. He chuckled. "Dont let Naruto help you cook or else the miso soup will be all over the walls." You laughed. He had done that once. You ended up having to serve a quick dish of noodles and tomato sauce instead. Exhausted Kakashi who had just come back from a mission scarfed it down all the same. "Oh god, dont remind me of that." The two of you had spent at least two hours cleaning miso soup off the wall. You smiled as you thought back on the memory. Slowly you fell asleep.
Kakashi pulled you a little closer. Sometimes when he thought about your little makeshift family, thoughts of his father flashed through his mind. He was scared that someday he might die on a mission and leave you and Naruto behind. He remembered how he felt back then to live alone, feel betrayed. Having you by his side made his job harder than it had ever been. You've grown so much closer; he valued you so much more. He suddenly had something to fight for, something to protect. It wasn't just him anymore.
He noticed it on missions, he fought with just a tad more desperation. It didn't affect his style or his skill but he gripped his kunai ever so slightly tighter and he felt so much more at ease as soon as he stood in front of your door once again. But he was glad. He knew it meant that he found someone again who actually meant something to him. He had never thought it to be possible after loosing his family and his team. He was still sometimes bitter about it but you were always there. At first it had been uncomfortable for him, he felt so vulnerable. You didn't allow him to feel lonely enough to spiral. Even if he did feel terrible sometimes, those times wouldn't last long. You were there for him. He was so thankful. He nuzzled his nose just a little bit more into your hair, breathing in the minty smell of your shampoo. Then his own eyes fell shut as well.
