Vi and Caitlyn's room was warm and cozy. The light from outside flickered through the windows as the evening was ending. Vi was lying on her back with one arm behind her head. The little warm body cuddled into the crook of her arm was transmitting a kind of soothing the woman never thought she'd ever have.
Lavender, at the age of four, was a little bundle of joy and the most precious thing in her moms’ lives. She was as passionate as Caitlyn when it came to what she loved, but she carried Vi's sweetness with her, always caring for others and thinking about them first.
Vi had just finished telling a bedtime story to Lavender. Her daughter's breathing was starting to slow down her mother's hand ran gently along her back, caressing her like she was the most precious thing in the world, because to Vi, she was. It felt natural, the way they nestled agaisnt eachother, their closeness bringing a peace that Vi never thought she'd experience.
“Mama,” Lavender murmured, her voice sleepy as she was starting to get tired.
Vi shifted to her side and looked at her daughter’s chubby face. “Yes, baby?”
“I love you. You’re my best friend,” Lavender whispered, her little voice tired but full of honesty.
That caught Vi by surprise. Of course, she knew her daughter loved her, but she never imagined hearing those words. Vi's eyes softened as she brushed a lock of hair from the toddler’s face. Some tears were already starting to escape. Motherhood had really made her a softie.
“You’re my best friend too, sweetie. Always,” she said, pressing a kiss to the little one's head.
Those words felt like a hug to the heart, reassurance of their bond, an affirmation of their future that was expecting their forever connection. Vi thought back to her past, to when she had to fight to eat, hide her cries and worries. Never in her life had she imagined being here, with her most cherished person in her arms. When she was all alone in prison, without any hope of getting out, it never crossed her mind to be a mother. But then she met Caitlyn, and with her, Vi always knew that anything was possible.
And now, here she was, holding her daughter as her breathing slowed. Vi snuggled closer to feel her warmth and closed her eyes, savoring the moment, hearing her daughter's soft breathing.
The bedroom door creaked open as Caitlyn walked in, a cup of tea in each hand, both steaming hot, as she knew her wife liked it. She placed the cups on the nightstand and lay gently in bed.
“Is she out?” she asked Vi, while caressing her cheek.
“Like a light,” Vi answered with a small smile while her partner continued to brush her face.
“Cait?”
“Hm?”
“She said I was her best friend.”
“Oh, she did? And what am I now?” She teased with a grin on her face.
Vi’s smile turned softer as she was getting more emotional.. “She said it like it was the biggest truth in the world.”
“Oh, love, that’s because it is.” Caitlyn pressed a gentle kiss to Vi’s temple and recieved a tender smile in return.
“I can’t believe I got so lucky with you two,” Vi whispered with glassy eyes..
“Darling, I’m pretty sure we’re the lucky ones, to have someone so strong and sweet like you to love. Especially Lavie, since her best friend is also her hero,” Joked Caitlyn, resting her forehead against Vi’s.
They stayed like that for a while, appreciating the moment. Then Caitlyn kissed both Lavender’s and her wife’s heads and wrapped an arm around them in a protective way.
It was moments like this that Vi wished she could freeze forever. Moments that made her realize she was exactly where she was meant to be.
As the last light of the evening began to fade, it was wrapped in love and comfort Vi never thought she’d be in, that they let slept take them, two cups of tea happily forgotten on the nightstand, and their whole world between them.
