Unit 1- Global Tapestry
Song Dynasty china- the first of 4 dynasties in the content, very influential and on top economically, many innovations like gunpowder, paper, compass, etc. that places like Dar al Islam utilized later in the period, civil service exams used to elect government officials which was very ahead of the time bc men from all classes were eligible to take the test, neo-confucianism was the predominant religion and promoted filial piety (respect to elders) and the 5 relationships (women were less than men, younger people less than older people, younger siblings less than older siblings, etc), promoted foot binding as a beauty standard for women

chinese civil service exam- the test that determined who was eligible to be a part of the government, very ahead of its time bc it was open to men of all classes, not just rich men
abbasid caliphate- erm i think this was the empire that resided in middle east and south asia before dar al islam was created???
selijuk empire- bro dont ask me
scientific and mathematical achievements of dar al islam- they took innovations from other places like europe and china and combined them together, to create even cooler innovations. created algebra, trig, and star maps (early calendars)
bagdhad house of wisdom- all islamic literature was kept here, was a great monument of knowledge until the mongols burnt it down :(
islam- the majority religion in the region of dar al islam, worshipped allah and followed the teachings of the prophet muhammed, practiced in middle east
hinduism- similar to islam, polytheistic (worshipped many gods) the other religion in dar al islam, mainly practiced in india
sufism- a branch of islam, focuses on direct relationships with your god rather than grand expositions in your god's name
srivijaya empire- indonesian empire that controlled the maritime trade in indonesia for some time, i hope this isnt on the testttt
hinduism's impact on southeast and south asia- the main religion practiced in this area
caste system- the hindu religious order, if you did good things in your life, then in your next life you will move up the "hierarchy" and have a better next life
mexica/aztecs- brutal tribe of native americans, human sacrifice to their gods, very violent, fell apart in 1450-1700
incas- similar to aztecs, human sacrifice but not as intense as aztecs, used a rope system where knots in a rope could be used as a record book
maya city states- erm........................ i got nuthin this is taking freaking forever omgggggg
great zimbabwe- south african empire, rich from the indian ocean trade route (more on that l8r!!!) built a big wall for protection then mysteriously disappeared one day...
ethiopia- northeastern african country, one of the few christian states in this time period (i think the only one??????????)
feudalism- way of dividing land among european officials; the king would give a portion of his land to the lord, then the lord would give a portion of that land to the duke, etc etc etc
manoralism- a way of living in the european countryside, the manor owner would provide shelter and a place to sleep for the peasants in exchange for work on the fields
role of roman catholic church on medieval european society- the church was totally more powerful than the king; they were richer, had more land, and more influence over the people; forced people to pay reparations in order to get into heaven (more on this l8r!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!)
serfdom- the name of the method peasants would use to get jobs, usually led to manoralism
crusades, byzantine empire, greek orthodox, great schism- yeah got nothing hope its not on the test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unit 2- Global Tapestry
Silk Roads- trade route along middle east, traded luxury goods like silk and Chinese porcelain, Samarkand and Kashgar were on this route, caravanserai increased in popularity because of this road
Kashgar and Samarkand- two cities on the silk road (and maybe others), became very rich due to luxury goods being traded all over
Luxury goods- items like gold, silver, ivory, porcelain, silk, etc. that were traded, usually along the silk road
Caravanserai- stops along the silk road, trans-saharan and indian ocean trade routes, served as stops where merchants could sleep, recharge, and restock on supplies, early-era buccees (marching band save me THREE MORE DAYS UNTIL SHOW REVEAL EEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Money economy- an economy that, instead of using big bags of silver and gold, used paper money that came from china (the idea not the money)
!!! Indian ocean trade route- trade route that went over the indian ocean and had stops along the east coast of africa (swahili city states), southerin india, and southeastern asia (mostly indonesia), traded a few luxury goods, but not as many as silk road (lwk forgot what they traded probably salt or something), increased the prevalence of diasporic communities
Swahili city states- cities on the southeastern coast of africa that were hotspots for trading. Like Samarkand and Kashgar, they grew very rich and wealthy.
Compass- a chinese innovation, helped establish the indian ocean trade route and make it easier to navigate
astrolabe- used the stars to help ships navigate, helped establish the indian ocean trade route and make it easier to navigate
dhow ships- chinese innovation, small ships that could sail very fast, helped establish the indian ocean trade route and make it easier AND QUICKER to navigate :P
Diasporic communities- mostly in indonesia, merchants from places like the swahili city states would live in southeastern asia until the monsoon winds shifted, and then they would sail back, rinse and repeat; established a zone where more people from e. africa would come, and created an eastern african population in southeastern asia
Junk ships- chinese innovation, very big ship that could carry a lot of supplies and ITEMS TO TRADE!!!! enabled merchants to make a lot of money in just one trip rather than a zillion
!!! Ming admiral Zheng He- leader of the ming dynasty, travelled around the indian ocean trade rout (i think??????) to flaunt the power and awesomeness of the chinese state (foreshadowing?????????)
Monsoon winds- winds that blew over the indian ocean trade route, changed every season or so and once the merchants recognized this pattern, they were able to plan their trips accordingly and make even more bank
trans saharan trade route- trade route over northern africa and some of the middle east, emphasized the usage of travel by camel and parades of caravans that traveled in groups (i forgot the official term lolol)
mansa musa- king of mali, the richest man in the world (?maybe not but he was VERY rich) took a religious tour around africa to spread his wealth and tell of the tales of cool and awesome mali, caused mass inflation in the places he went (oops)
camel saddle- allowed for more comfortable trips via camel :P
!!! caravans- lwk forgot, they were kinda like camel drawn carriages, i always think of like minivans whenever i talk abt caravans, helped merchants travel in groups and have more safety along the trade routes
Mali- northern african country, very rich in this time period (thanks mr musa)

diffusion of gunpowder- gunpowder was a chinese innovation, and originally used for fireworks and stuff. due to silk road and similar trade routes, gunpowder left china and spread to dar al islam and europe, where it was used for also fireworks.
diffusion of paper- similar to gunpowder, chinese innovation, spread to dar al islam and europe due to trade routes, important role in europe in the next period (wink)
buddhism's influence in east asia- secondary religion in east asia (specifically china) and i think jumpstarted the beginning of neoconfucianism, idk why tho
spread of islam to southeast asia- through the three trade routes, muslim merchants would sell their items to people and then the people would be like "wow that merchant is so cool i should convert to islam so i can be cool like that merchant wow wow wow!!!!!!"
spread of islam to subsaharan africa- same as spread to southeast asia
genghis khan- the leader of wait for it............................................ THE MONGOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mongol knanates- began as a small nomadic tribe, the mongols first gained all their land from putting their soldiers on horses where they were able to shoot their enemies quickly with their bows and arrows. later they used gunpowder as a weapon aaah scary!!!! they took over nearly all of eurasia, but stopped at india because the hindus were too powerful lolol
effects of mongol empire- throughout the hole continent being controlled under one person, pax mongolica promoted protection of merchants above most things, and the trade routes were very protected from bandits and other evil people
cultural transfers in mongol empire- unlike other evil leaders, genghis khan let the people he colonized keep practicing their own religion instead of converting everyone to one religion!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pax mongolica- the period of peace under genghis khan's rule
yuan empire- when the mongols took over china, they ended song china (nooo) and took over all positions of power
il khanate- this mightve been a leader maybe....
diffusion of math/numerals- ??? what do you mean vro....
black death- the super emo disease that totally wiped out 2/3 of europe's population... what a sad time..... spread through fleas that lived on rats.... rip....
commercial practices- like selling stuff???? idkkkkk
UNIT 3- land based empires yesssss (1450-1750) two decades of AWESOMENESS
qing dynasty- after the mongols fell apart, this was the current dynasty in china, also the last one ;(
manchus- the leaders of the qing dynasty, however they practiced a different religon than the citizens which led to animosity among the state
mughal empire- the new indian empire, they practiced sunni islam, akbar the great was very ahead of his time, through banning female widows throwing themselves off buildings when their husbands died and giving equal rights to women. then aurangzeb the next leader, reversed all this :( shah abbas l8r built a large building for his wife as a burial place; aka the taj mahal :P
ottoman empire- after the mongol empire collapsed, the ottomans were formed, which were like mongols 2.0 but smaller. they were the longest-lasting empire, lasting for around 600 years yayyyy; practiced sunni islam
safavid empire- kinda like the mughals and ottomans locationwise, but they practriced shia islam instead of sunni islam and were at odds with both empires constantly
tokugawa japan- japan was sick of other states trying to get them to convert to a different religion, so they closed off trade with all other countries (except the dutch 💖 love you dutch)
samuri- the "knight" of japan, protected the people during the tokugawa shogunate
devshirme- christian boys from the balkans were kidnapped, converted to islam, and forced to work for the ottomans
janissaries- christian balkan boys were kidnapped, converted to islam and worked in the militaryyyy
sikhism- a combination of christianity and islamic, idk where it was practiced tho
akbar the great- mughal leader, promoted equality regardless of gender yayyy
the divine faith- religion made by akbar, idk what the impact was
sunni shia split- sunnis believed that muhammed's successor should be of his choosing, and shias said muhammed's successor should be part of his bloodline
european divine right- to justify their ruling, leaders in europe claimed that they were chosen by god to rule over their zone (totally false)
