Work Text:
“You are a mad man,” Tony said, laughing as he stepped through the portal Stephen had opened for him and into his penthouse.
“I took a calculated risk,” Stephen said. He closed the portal behind himself and the Cloak swung off his shoulders and headed deeper into the penthouse, probably to join DUM-E and U in the lab. The Cloak had been leaving them alone more and more lately; Tony was close to advancing their relationship and Stephen and the Cloak agreed that he was more likely to take that step if he didn’t feel he had an audience.
“Calculated risk my ass,” Tony scoffed, heading over to the bar and pouring himself a drink. He waved the bottle at Stephen, who nodded. “You took one look at that collapsing tunnel, decided you could make it, and just dove for it. There was no calculating involved.”
“There was,” Stephen insisted, but he couldn’t resist a grin, which may have weakened his argument. “Albeit, perhaps subconscious.”
“Hah!” Tony said victoriously, handing Stephen his drink. “If it happens subconsciously, it’s intuition not calculation.”
Stephen sipped his drink and smirked at Tony. “It worked, didn’t it?”
“It sure as hell did.” Tony knocked back his drink and set the glass down. “You’re incredible, you know that?”
Stephen flushed and his heart rate kicked up. Was this it? “Careful, you’ll inflate my ego.”
Tony took a step closer. “A big ego isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”
“Oh really?” Stephen prompted. It was everything he could do not to sound breathless. He leaned forward, into Tony’s space, and carefully set his half full glass on the bar.
Tony put a hand on Stephen’s hip to stop him from stepping back again. Stephen’s heart was thundering so hard he almost couldn’t hear Tony speak. “For example, my considerable ego is telling me you’d like me to kiss you right now.”
Stephen licked his lips. “The question is, do you want to kiss me?”
“Is that why you haven’t made a move?” Tony asked. He tugged Stephen in until their bodies brushed together.
“I wanted you to make the move,” Stephen said, letting his flush deepen a bit. It’s true, almost as much for the reason Tony will assume as because Stephen knew their relationship would deepen faster if Tony started it.
Tony smiled, just as Stephen expected. For all that Tony was the superhero and the genius and the ‘Stark’ in Stark Industries, Pepper had called the shots in their relationship; when Tony did what he wanted, it always caused friction. It’ll be different with Stephen.
He doesn’t need to make demands to get what he wants, anyway.
“In that case…” Tony said, and pulled Stephen into a kiss.
Stephen sank into it eagerly, his heart soaring.
They were going to be incredible together.
