APRIL 11TH – SHEPARD AND DERYK'S VANCOUVER RESIDENCE – 7318 MINTO CRESCENT (SHAUGHNESSY)…

It was a beautiful spring morning in Vancouver. The sun's rays had crept their way through the spacious windows of the balcony door, washing the handsome blonde in an ethereal honeyed glow.

Deryk smiled as he glanced at his sleeping husband. He looks so peaceful like this.

He ran his long fingers along Shepard's chin, admiring the younger man's beauty before leaning in to kiss him.

Their lips barely touched when there was a sudden knock on the door.

Deryk cocked his brow in confusion as he moved to greet the unexpected guests.

He was all smiles when he saw Dex holding a tray of breakfast foods with three tiny toddlers by his side.

“What’s this?” Deryk asked in an amused tone.

“The triplets wanted to make breakfast in bed for their daddy,” Dex answered with a wink.

Deryk was about to ask Dex where Vaan was when he was distracted by Keifer.

“We're surprising Daddy,” the little boy said, his words a little mispronounced, but close enough for Deryk to understand.

“I see that,” he said with a smile as he picked up his oldest son.

“He's sleeping,” Liannah said, cocking her head to the side as her loose blonde curls shimmered in the morning light.

“Papa, wake him up,” Kiefer insisted as he motioned to the bed.

Deryk laughed warmly as he watched their smallest and youngest child climb onto the bed to cuddle beside his sleeping father.

After a few seconds, Deryk snickered as Remy gently slapped Shepard's cheeks in an effort to wake him.

He knitted his tiny brow before moving to lift one of his father's eyelids.

“Wake up, Daddy.”

Shepard mumbled as his eyes slowly opened. His frown faded into a crooked smile when he saw his youngest son's face.

“G'mornin’.”

Deryk's smile faltered a bit at the slight slurring of his husband's words. He's not feeling too good.

*Bark!*

“Shush, Alex!” Liannah insisted as the large black labrador pup made its way to Shepard's bedside.

“Alex is just protecting Daddy. Don't scold him, Lia,” Deryk said as he picked his daughter up with his free arm.

The little girl pouted before reluctantly promising not to do it again.

Once Shepard was lucid enough to sit up, he placed Remy on his lap and kissed Deryk good morning.

“Happy birthday, kitten,” Deryk said with a wink as the triplets made themselves comfortable around their father.

“Wow! Breakfast in bed. I'm a lucky man,” Shepard said as his children swarmed him while Dex handed Deryk the tray of breakfast treats.

Deryk cocked his brow in amusement when Remy snatched a few blueberries from the tray, giggling as he fed Shepard the sweet treat.

“Mmm. Thank you, baby boy. I thought Vaan had this shift,” Shepard said as he enjoyed the taste of fresh blueberries.

“He's here too. The kids needed a little assistance, so I decided to drop by,” Dex replied as Deryk placed the tray across Shepard's lap.

The juice was about to spill when Deryk pulled it from the tray at the last second.

“I'll put this on the table.” He gave Shepard a playful wink before getting out of bed.

“Where are you going?” Shepard asked in confusion.

“Dex forgot the coffee. I’ll be back in a second, kitten,” Deryk promised as he put on his robe and headed for the kitchen.

“I think I’ll go make Deryk a plate, so y’all can enjoy breakfast together,” Dex said as he followed Deryk downstairs.

“Thanks for this, Dex,” Shepard called out, causing the man to wave his hand as he disappeared from sight.

Shepard turned his focus to his children, smiling as he watched them pick pieces of fruit from his tray.

“Would you guys like to eat with Daddy?” He asked, causing the tiny trio to nod as Shepard started feeding them pieces of his breakfast.

Deryk headed straight for the coffee machine, giving Vaan a wave as he poured two cups of coffee.

“Dex forgot the coffee, huh?” Vaan mused, causing Deryk to nod.

“In my defence, I didn't wanna risk the kids getting burned,” Dex insisted as he made his way to the stove.

“Uh-huh,” Vaan said in a teasing tone.

“Have you eaten yet, Vaan?” Dex asked, earning a nod from his best friend.

“Is this for me?” Deryk asked, causing Dex to nod.

“Yeah. I figured you'd want to eat breakfast with your husband.”

“That is very thoughtful, Dex. I appreciate it,” Deryk said with a grin as he accepted the plate of food.

“He's practicing for when he and Josh make it official,” Vaan teased.

“A little practice never hurts,” Dex said with a wink.

“Ain't that the truth? Well, I'm gonna head upstairs. Something tells me the kids are gonna eat more than the birthday boy,” Deryk said as he headed for the stairs.

“Have fun,” Vaan called out before focusing on Dex.

“So, who's first up on babysitting duty?”

“I'm not sure. I figured it would be Ric and Stella, but they're house-sitting for a friend in Rosetown for at least a week, maybe longer. But you know Deryk has a plan,” Dex replied with a shrug.

“Does Johnny even know about the vacation?” Vaan asked, causing Dex to knit his brow as he scratched his chin.

“You'd think so. I mean, Deryk was packin’ yesterday.”

“Oh? Was Johnny with him?” Vaan asked curiously.

“Uh, no. He was working. Why?”

“He doesn't know. Deryk might have to cancel if Johnny bucks against him,” Vaan said with a sigh.

“Just how do you know he doesn't know?” Dex asked in an amused tone.

“He hasn't mentioned it. Usually, he mentions things like that. I haven't heard a word about Banff.”

“Hn. I noticed Alex hangin’ pretty close to him. Do you think he's gettin’ sick?”

“Well, he just got out of the hospital three days ago. I'd say he's still adjusting. He seems fine, though. Just tired,” Vaan replied.

“Yeah. You're probably right. I really hope he agrees to go on this trip. God knows, he needs a break,” Dex said, receiving a nod from Vaan.

When Deryk returned with the coffee and a plate of his own, he smiled as he watched Shepard feed each of his children before daring to have anything for himself.

Best dad ever, Deryk thought to himself as he took a seat next to his family.

“Is it good?” Deryk asked, causing all three of his children to nod.

“Rem's eating more than he has in weeks. I'm proud of him,” Shepard said as he ran his fingers through their smallest child's soft blonde hair.

“His appetite is getting better. He'll catch up before we know it,” Deryk said as he gave his husband a wink before feeding him a forkful of scrambled eggs.

“Thanks,” Shepard said, smiling as he gave Deryk a grateful peck on the lips.

“I have a surprise for you,” Deryk said as the kids continued to play around them.

“We're going back to Rosetown earlier than planned?” Shepard asked in a hopeful tone.

“Maybe, but that isn't what I meant.”

“Oh? What's the surprise? You didn't go crazy and buy a ton of gifts this year, did you?” Shepard's tone was scolding, causing Deryk to laugh.

“No, I didn't buy a lot of things. I just planned a romantic trip to Banff in honour of your 30th birthday.”

Shepard groaned in frustration. “We agreed not to do anything too crazy.”

“Spending time with your husband in one of your favourite places is not crazy, kitten. It's perfect, and you need this to get away from all the stress of the city.”

“Dery, that's the sweetest gift! When are we going?” Shepard asked, his ice-blue eyes lighting up in anticipation.

“Well, we're scheduled to head out this afternoon,” Deryk said, his grin faltering when he saw Shepard's mood flip.

“Dery, I just got out of the hospital a few days ago. I still don't feel all that well. Shouldn't we wait until I feel better?”

“Kitten, the plans have been made. We're scheduled to be in Banff tonight.”

“You already packed, didn't you?” Shepard asked in an amused tone.

“I packed all the technical stuff along with all my crap. All you have to worry about is packing some clothes,” Deryk said with a grin.

“How did you manage to pack without me noticing?”

“I packed while you were working yesterday. The kids even helped, or tried to help.”

Shepard smiled as he stretched his long limbs.

“Did you pack their things yet?”

Deryk scratched his chin as he contemplated how to tell his husband the trip was for two, not five.

“Dery? The kids are coming with us, right?” Shepard asked.

“No, kitten. It's just you and me. And before you get too upset, Marcus thinks you need this, and I agree. It's only for two weeks.”

“TWO WEEKS! ARE YOU INSANE!? We can't leave our kids for two weeks! What if they get sick or they start missing us? Two weeks is just way too long, Dery.” Shepard's ice-blue eyes glistened as he thought of everything that could go wrong.

Deryk immediately pulled him close, kissing his temple and rubbing his back in an effort to ease his anxiety.

“Kitten, we'll call every day. And if something comes up, we'll head home. I promise.”

“And if the kids want us to come home?”

“We'll come home. Everything will be okay. You need this, my kitten. You're exhausted and need to relax. I love our brood, but you can't relax while they're hanging from you every moment of the day. Please, trust Marcus. And trust me. Our kids will be fine,” Deryk insisted.

“Mom and Dad can't come to Vancouver right now. Are you sure we can't take them with us?” Shepard asked nervously.

“No! This is a vacation for us. Like I said before, if we take the kids, you aren't going to get any rest. They'll drag you everywhere, and we won't have any time to ourselves. The kids are staying here. They're almost 3 now, so there's no need to panic. Grayson and Kaidan are more than capable of watching over them for 14 days.”

“Gray and K? Really, Dery? Our kids will run circles around them,” Shepard insisted.

Deryk couldn't help but snicker. “That's actually funny.”

“Yeah, until they're begging for us to come home,” Shepard said with a chuckle.

“If that happens, we'll cut the vacation short,” Deryk promised.

“Okay. What if I start feeling worse? Shouldn't we wait till I feel better?” Shepard wondered.

“We're taking Alex with us. He'll let me know if you start feeling worse. And if that happens, we'll head back. Please agree to this, kitten. I really don't want to cancel,” Deryk said with the most adorable puppy dog eyes Shepard had seen in a while.

“The triplets are teaching you bad habits,” Shepard said as he narrowed his ice-blue eyes at his husband.

“Maybe. Well? Are we heading to Banff?”

“That depends. Are you going to take this tray to the kitchen so I can pack?” Shepard asked, causing Deryk to kiss his neck once more.

“I'm on it! Kids, are you gonna help Daddy pack or are you coming with me?” Deryk asked, causing the kids to start bouncing up and down on the bed.

“They can stay, Dery,” Shepard said with a wink as he watched his children play.

Once he had finished packing, Shepard took a deep breath as he massaged his temples.

“Headache?” Deryk asked from his place by the bedroom door.

“Yeah, but it isn't bad,” Shepard assured him as Alex focused on him.

“Are you having auras?” Deryk asked curiously before motioning to Alex. “He's hanging pretty close. It's got me on edge.”

“I'm just tired. No auras to speak of. I think he's afraid I'll trip over my own two feet,” Shepard said as he gave the black lab puppy a loving pat.

“That pup is the best investment we ever made.”

“Yep. He's a good boy,” Shepard said as he signalled for the pup to give him a hug.

“Ready for Banff?” Deryk asked, causing Shepard to take a deep breath and nod.

“I think so,” Shepard said as he picked up his luggage.

“I'll take care of that. Go play with the kids. I know you want to,” Deryk said with a wink.

“Ich liebe dich, mein Dery.” (I love you, my Dery.)

“Ich liebe dich, mein Kätzchen.” (I love you, my kitten.)

1:15 P.M.

Deryk had just finished placing the luggage into the Jeep when Grayson and Kaidan pulled into the driveway.

“Looks like someone's eager to start their vacation,” Grayson teased as he and Kaidan exited the vehicle.

“What can I say? I'm looking forward to some alone time with my kitten,” Deryk said as he gave both men a friendly hug.

“Where's Jo? Is he eager to get goin’?” Grayson asked curiously.

“He's looking forward to it, but at the same time, he doesn't want to leave the kids. You know how he is.”

“Yeah, he worries too damn much. Are the kids on board with the vacation?” Grayson asked.

“Well, they're toddlers. I'm not sure they understand these things yet,” Deryk said, causing Kaidan to laugh.

“As long as we keep them occupied, things should run smoothly—at least for a time.”

“If they start cryin’, I might have to tap out. I can't stand the thought of a baby cryin’,” Grayson said, causing Kaidan to laugh as he massaged Grayson's shoulders.

“We got this, Gray. You'll see,” he insisted.

“I hope you're right, Doc. Well, let's go see what Jo and the triplets are up to,” Grayson said as the three men headed inside.

Grayson couldn't help but laugh when he saw Shepard with a child under each arm and one on his back. All three of the children were laughing in amusement as they held on tightly to their father.

“Darlin’, shouldn't you be gettin’ ready to head out?”

“I'm ready. I was just playing with the kids for a bit before we go,” Shepard said as Deryk took Remy from his back.

“We have to get going soon. So why don't you three give us a big hug, eh?”

Shepard reluctantly placed the other two children on their feet before pulling them in for a big hug.

After hugging Deryk tightly, Remy ran to Shepard, while Kiefer and Liannah ran from Shepard to Deryk.

“We're going to miss you guys so much. But we'll call every day, okay? And if you ever need us, just call. We love you,” Deryk said as he kissed his children goodbye.

“Love you,” the trio replied in unison.

Shepard smiled as he gave his children one last hug and kiss.

“If you need us, just have Gray or K call us.”

“Okay, Daddy,” Liannah said, nodding her head in understanding.

“Kitten, we really need to get going if we're going to make our flight,” Deryk said as he wrapped his arm around his husband's waist.

“Alright. Did you remember my medication?” Shepard asked as he took hold of Alex's leash.

“Of course! Is Alex ready to go?” Deryk asked, causing the dog to bark in reply.

“I'll take that as a yes,” Shepard said with a grin as they made their way to the door.

“Gray, call if anything happens,” Shepard insisted, causing Grayson to chuckle.

“Jo, you're adorable, but you're too damn paranoid, darlin’. The kids are in good hands. Now, go have fun with the jackass.”

“I love you too, prick,” Deryk said as he assisted Shepard with his coat.

“I'll try to relax. Gray. K. I love you both. See you in a few weeks,” Shepard said as he and Deryk made their way to the airport.

“Dove needs this, huh?” Kaidan thought aloud, causing Grayson to nod.

“More than he realizes. I reckon we should take our bags upstairs.”

“I have a feeling it's going to be a long two weeks,” Kaidan mused as they headed upstairs with three very active children following closely.

THREE DAYS LATER – SHEPARD AND DERYK'S VANCOUVER RESIDENCE – 7318 MINTO CRESCENT (SHAUGHNESSY)…

Kaidan smiled as he watched Shepard and Deryk interact with their children via video streaming.

The laughter was abundant until the toddlers’ attention drifted to other things, leaving Shepard and Deryk without an audience.

“I think we bored them,” Deryk said, causing Shepard to laugh as he leaned against him.

“I have to say, the vacation is doing wonders for the both of you. Dove looks more well-rested and Deryk—you just look happier. Are you guys enjoying Banff as much as I think you are?” Kaidan asked with a grin.

“Definitely! We miss the kids, but it's nice just spending time together.”

“I admit, I'm having more fun than I thought I would. These video calls help, though,” Shepard admitted truthfully.

“Is Alex enjoying himself?” Kaidan asked curiously.

“He is! He loves the snow. We have videos of him riding a sled. It's adorable. We had to cut that short, though. We started wishing the kids were with us,” Deryk said as he rubbed Shepard's back.

“That's completely understandable,” Kaidan said, causing Shepard to nod.

“Indoor activities are fun too,” he said, giving Deryk a suggestive wink.

“I love indoor activities. Which reminds me—I need to order dinner.”

“Dery, it's only 2 P.M.”

“I know, but I'm ordering an elaborate feast, and it takes time,” Deryk said as he gave Shepard a quick kiss before disappearing from view.

“He spoils you,” Kaidan said, causing Shepard to grin.

“I know, and I love him for it. Has Rem's breathing been okay? You haven't had to give him a breathing treatment or anything, have you?” Shepard asked.

“Remy is just fine. He and Kiefer have been teasing their sister all morning. Liannah eventually got tired of it and ran to Gray. Needless to say, the teasing stopped.”

Shepard laughed as he thought of his children. “Let me guess, the boys were pulling her curls and hiding her dolls.”

“That's what they were doing. Liannah was not amused,” Kaidan said, his smile never faltering.

“That was Kiefer's doing. He's the mastermind. He loves to tease his sister, and Rem just comes along for the ride. I think he enjoys it just as much, though. Even if he doesn't instigate things.”

“I think that's a fair assumption,” Kaidan said, just as Chester walked through the frame with Liannah on his back.

“That poor dog. They're constantly harassing him. I'm grateful for his patience,” Shepard said, causing Deryk to call out from off-camera.

“Are they mistaking him for a pony again?”

“Yep. Vaan swears he doesn't mind, but I'm skeptical,” Shepard said, causing Deryk to laugh.

“I think I'll let you two love birds enjoy your afternoon. We'll talk soon,” Kaidan said.

“Alright. Give the triplets a hug and kiss for us,” Shepard said as the call ended.

“I better see what the boys are up to,” Kaidan said as he headed into the playroom.

After an exhausting afternoon of chasing after the triplets, Kaidan was resting on the couch when Grayson arrived from work, carrying a load of takeout.

“I'm home, Doc.”

“Takeout? Are you sure Dove and Deryk would approve?” Kaidan asked in an amused tone.

“They ain't here,” Grayson said with a wink, causing Kaidan to sigh.

“Do we really want to piss them off the first time we're asked to babysit?”

“Doc, do you really feel like cookin’ tonight, ‘cause I know I sure don't. Besides, we're supposed to spoil them. We're the fun uncles,” Grayson insisted.

“I think Zen is the fun uncle, and maybe Zach. We aren't half as flamboyant as those two,” Kaidan argued.

“Doc, don't ruin my mood. My shoulder is fucking killin’ me,” Grayson said, causing Kaidan to give him a loving kiss.

“I'll give you a massage later. First, we better wrangle the kids and feed them before everything gets cold.”

“I do love you,” Grayson said with a wink as he took Kaidan's hand and guided him into the kitchen.

So far, things were running as smooth as silk.

◇◇◇◇☆◇◇◇◇

For the next four days, things were relatively quiet. Kaidan and Grayson had fallen into a routine with the triplets, adjusting to their schedules with relative ease.

It wasn't until Kaidan got called into work for an emergency consultation that things got tricky.

“How long will you be gone?” Grayson asked as the triplets played with Jagger and Chester.

“I'm not sure. Paul and Aaron are staying for a while, so that should help ease the burden,” Kaidan teased, causing Grayson to roll his eyes.

“I can watch over the triplets just fine on my own. Thank you very much.”

“Uh-huh. I'll be home as soon as I can. Save me some of Paul's pasta. The man's cooking is irresistible,” Kaidan said, kissing Grayson before grabbing his coat and heading for the car.

“I make no promises!” Grayson called out as he watched until his lover was out of sight.

“Dinner's ready,” Aaron called out from the kitchen, causing two of the three triplets to run past him, into the kitchen.

Grayson laughed at their enthusiasm. “Even the kids know Paul's food is the best.”

Aaron laughed before turning his attention to Remy, who was sitting alone with the two super-sized Kuvasz dogs, rubbing his left ear.

“He is his father's son,” he thought aloud, causing Grayson to smile.

“I'll get him,” Grayson said as he made his way to where the little boy was sitting. “Hey, little man. It's time for dinner.”

“I'm not hungry,” Remy said as he ran his fingers through Jagger's fur.

“I know, but you gotta eat a little somethin’.”

Remy knitted his brow before shaking his head.

“You are so much like your daddy. His appetite isn't the best either. He still knows he has to eat a little something. So, how ‘bout it? Will ya eat a few bites for ol’ Uncle Gray?”

“I want Daddy to feed me,” Remy said, causing Grayson to sigh.

“I know. But Daddy ain't here. You'll have to let me feed you instead.”

“I dunno,” Remy said as he rubbed both of his ears.

“You know your parents are gonna be so proud of you if you eat your dinner. It'll make ‘em so happy. So, how ‘bout it, little man?”

Remy sighed before reaching out to Grayson, his fingers wiggling.

“That's a good boy,” Grayson said as he lifted the boy into his arms. “Let's go eat.”

After a tasty meal of pasta and wine/juice, Grayson and Paul cleaned up, placing the dirty dishes into the dishwasher and wiping down the counters, before heading into the living room to assist Aaron with the triplets.

“Having fun, babe?” Paul asked as Aaron walked around on all fours with three hyper-active toddlers hanging from him.

“I am, actually. It almost makes me want to have kids… Almost.” Aaron gave Paul a playful wink as he continued to play with the triplets.

It was almost time for their baths when there was a sudden knock at the door.

“I wonder who that could be?” Grayson thought aloud.

“I'll check,” Paul said as he moved to answer the door.

Paul smiled when he saw Cyan and Evan standing in the doorway.

“Hey! We're just checking in. How are you guys doing? Need any help?” Cyan asked as Paul hugged them both in greeting.

“Aaron and I were just getting ready to head home. Gray's about to give the kids a bath, but I'm not sure he's up to it. Vaan won't be here until morning and Doc got capped into work, so he's alone tonight. I'm sure he'd be grateful if you guys could help him,” Paul said, causing Cyan to chuckle.

“We'll be happy to help,” she said as she practically dragged Evan into the house.

The second the triplets saw the couple, they headed straight for them. Kiefer was the first to demand Evan's attention, while Liannah reached for Cyan. Remy, on the other hand, seemed content with riding Chester.

“I see you're babysitting Chester while Vaan's away,” Evan said in an amused tone, causing Grayson to snort.

“He asked nicely.”

“Liar! Gray begged Vaan to leave him because it makes watching Rem a little easier,” Aaron said, causing Grayson to roll his eyes.

“Why can't you be seen and not heard?”

Paul laughed at the familiar dynamic between his best friend and husband.

“I think that's our cue to leave. Ready to go, Jagger?” Paul asked, causing him to bark as he followed Aaron and Paul to the door.

“Call if you need us,” Paul said before disappearing behind the door with Aaron and Jagger in tow.

Cyan laughed as she placed her bag on the couch. “We were told you need some help getting these guys bathed and ready for bed.”

“I'd appreciate the help. I can handle it, but it takes forever,” Grayson admitted.

“I'll take Liannah. You and Ev can take care of Kiefer and Remy,” Cyan said as she headed for the downstairs washroom.

“I'll get Rem,” Grayson said as he picked up the little boy before motioning for Evan to follow him with Kiefer in tow.

With Evan's assistance, the boys weren't nearly as difficult to wrangle. Both men were still thoroughly soaked, by the time bath time was officially over. But they managed to keep the boys from making too much of a mess. A little water on the floor was better than a deluge.

As they were dressing the twins for bed, Evan chuckled when he heard the boys communicate in their own special language.

“Have you ever figured out what they're saying?” He asked, causing Grayson to shake his head.

“Nope. I don't think anyone knows how to translate it. They sure seem to understand it, though. It's clever, but I don't envy Jo and Deryk. Once they're teenagers, it'll be less cute and more unnerving.”

“Hmm. You have a point,” Evan agreed when Cyan appeared in the doorway with Liannah fast asleep in her arms.

“This one already fell asleep,” she said, causing Evan to blink in surprise.

“How did you do that?” He asked, amazed by his wife's way with children.

“She has a gift. Jo has it too. I don't know where they got it from, though,” Grayson said as he tried to get the boys to turn in for the night.

“The boys like to listen to music. It helps them fall asleep,” Cyan said as she placed Lia in her bed.

“It didn't work last night. I think they're missing their daddies.”

“Aw. You should play the duet Deryk did with Johnny. I'm sure that'll work,” Evan said as he opened his phone to find the tune.

Once the boys heard their fathers’ voices, they immediately calmed, and before the song was over, they were fast asleep.

“Man, y'all saved me so much time,” Grayson said as he walked Cyan and Evan downstairs.

“It was no trouble. Well, we better head home. You know where to find us if you need us,” Evan said as he gave Grayson a friendly hug before giving Cyan room to do the same.

“Thanks again for helpin’ me out. I'll see y'all later,” Grayson said as he walked the couple to the door.

Once he was alone, he turned the lights out and headed for bed.

Grayson woke with a dull, aching pain in his shoulder, a sure sign he had slept at a bad angle the night before.

“Dammit!” He cursed as he rotated his sore shoulder a few times before dragging himself from bed to start his day.

He could smell coffee brewing as he headed for the kitchen and was hoping his lover had returned from work. But was quickly disappointed to find Vaan leaning against the kitchen counter.

“Only a week to go. How are you holding up?” Vaan teased as he moved to pour Grayson a cup of coffee.

“They aren't bad kids, but damn if they ain't active. I'll never understand how Jo manages with all he's dealin’ with on a daily basis. He's a better man than me.”

“He's definitely a great dad. Where's Kaidan?” Vaan asked curiously.

“He's still at work. I'm hopin’ he comes home today. My shoulder's fucking killin’ me, which makes it hard to be the happy-go-lucky uncle the kids know and love,” Grayson admitted.

“If you need a break, I can watch the triplets for a bit. I'm pretty sure I can manage to make breakfast for them. And Chester is great with them. So, why don't you take something for that shoulder and rest a bit? I'll wake you if anything comes up,” Vaan insisted.

“You're sure this isn't any trouble for you?” Grayson asked.

“No trouble at all. Go lie down for a bit.”

“Thanks, Vaan,” Grayson said as he took one last sip of his coffee before heading into the living room.

Later that morning, Kiefer and Liannah were playing with Chester when Remy decided to check on his uncle.

After making his way into the living room, he noticed a large black back sitting on the floor next to the couch. Being the curious child he was, Remy decided to see what was inside.

The little boy giggled when he found large pallets of makeup, along with lipsticks and various other cosmetics. He clapped his hands in amusement before opening one of the brighter pallets.

“I'm gonna make Uncle Gray pretty,” he thought aloud as he picked out one of the smaller brushes from the bag.

With surprising skill for such a young child, Remy began to paint Grayson's sleeping face with the most vibrant and outrageous colours.

His eyelids were a rainbow of colours by the time Remy was done. Purples, greens, blues, and pinks loosely blended to form a rather shocking look.

“Lipstick,” Remy said as he picked out a bright red colour before smearing it over Grayson's lips.

He cocked his head to the side to admire his handy work but found something lacking. Suddenly, a spark of creativity hit, and soon he was painting Grayson's hair with various glosses and shadows.

“Rem, where are you, kid?” Vaan called out from the playroom, causing the little boy to hide the bag under the couch before rushing into the playroom.

Vaan grinned when the little boy ran to him, arms up and fingers wiggling.

“Up,” the little boy demanded, causing Vaan to laugh as he lifted him into the air.

“What have you been up to?” Vaan asked curiously.

“Painting,” Remy said, causing Vaan to give him a confused look.

I don't see anything on his hands. He must've been pretending.

“Wanna go play in the yard with your brother and sister?”

“Is Chester coming too?” Remy asked as he played with Vaan's collar.

“Yep. He's coming with us.”

“Okay, let's play,” Remy said, causing Vaan to chuckle as he gathered the other two children before calling for Chester to follow.

1:45 P.M.

Kaidan arrived home from work feeling more than a little tired. He was about to announce his presence when he saw a figure lying on the couch.

“His shoulder must be acting up again,” Kaidan thought aloud as he put his coat away before making his way into the living room.

He nearly burst into laughter when he saw Grayson's face.

He looks like an amateur drag queen, and a blind one at that, Kaidan thought to himself as he took a few photos for posterity before gently waking his lover.

“Hn. Is somethin’ wrong, Vaan?” Grayson mumbled as he cleared the sleep from his eyes. “Doc?”

“Hey. In pain, love?” Kaidan asked, causing Grayson to nod.

“I'll give you something for it soon. So, what's with the makeup?” He asked, barely keeping a straight face.

“Makeup? What makeup? I don't know anything about any makeup,” Grayson replied in confusion.

Kaidan handed him his phone, showing him one of the photos he had just taken.

“What the hell!? Alright! Which one did it?” Grayson asked, causing Kaidan to laugh.

“I have no idea. I didn't see anyone when I came in?”

“It had to be Lia, right? I mean, she loves this crap,” Grayson said.

“Wanna go ask her?” Kaidan asked in an amused tone.

“Why the hell not?” Grayson said as Kaidan helped him to his feet.

“Where are the kids, by the way?”

Grayson could sense the apprehension in Kaidan's tone and couldn't help but laugh.

“Vaan's with them. They're safe.”

“I wasn't doubting your judgement.”

“Uh-huh,” Grayson said in an amused tone as they headed into the backyard in search of Vaan and the kids.

Vaan burst into laughter when he saw Grayson's face and hair.

“What the hell happened to you?”

“You tell me. I know it was one of these little hellions, but I'm not sure which. My money is on Lia, though,” Grayson said, causing Vaan to scratch his chin.

“I don't think it was Lia, Grayson,” Vaan said.

“And why's that?”

“Lia and Kiefer never left my sight. Remy, on the other hand, wandered off. When I asked him what he was up to, he said he was painting. So, yeah, I'd say you were his canvas.”

Grayson sighed as he knelt to speak to the tiniest of the triplets.

“Rem, why did you paint me like this?”

“I made you pretty,” Remy said, clapping his tiny hands in excitement.

“Aw. You can't really scold him for that. It's too freaking adorable,” Kaidan insisted, causing Grayson to rub his face hard with both hands.

“Careful! You don't want to smear your makeup,” Vaan teased, causing Grayson to flip him off.

“Where'd you get the makeup, Rem?” Grayson asked, causing the little boy to point to the house.

“Where in the house?” Kaidan asked curiously.

“Beside the couch,” Remy replied before turning to play with his siblings.

“I don't understand,” Kaidan said, causing Grayson to chuckle.

“It's Cyan's bag. She left it on the couch last night when she and Evan stopped by. I put it on the floor when I decided to take a nap. Funny thing is, I didn't see it when I woke up.”

“Do you think he stashed it somewhere?” Vaan asked.

“Knowing Rem, yeah. I'm willing to bet he did.”

“I'll go search his room. We need to find it before he decides to make us all pretty,” Kaidan said, causing Vaan to herd the kids back inside.

“I'll give you a hand,” Vaan said as he led Chester and the kids into the living room before assisting Kaidan in his search.

“I'm gonna go wash my face. Don't go anywhere,” Grayson ordered as he headed for the downstairs washroom.

While the adults were gone, Remy retrieved the makeup bag from underneath the couch.

“Let's make Chester pretty,” Remy said, causing Kiefer and Liannah to nod in agreement.

By the time the three men had returned to the living room, the triplets had painted Chester's white fur a hundred different shades.

“Seriously, Rem!” Vaan called out as Grayson and Kaidan began to laugh and take videos.

“He's pretty,” Liannah said as she kissed the dog's nose.

“We did good,” Kiefer said as he put his arm around his little brother's shoulder.

“Uh-huh,” Remy agreed just as the laptop on the coffee table began to chime.

“That's Jo and the jackass,” Grayson said as he accepted the video call.

“Hey! How's our babies?” Deryk asked, causing Grayson to snort.

“They're expressing themselves.”

“What?” Shepard asked in confusion.

“They're lettin’ their inner artist shine,” Grayson said as he turned the laptop so the camera could focus on Chester and the triplets.

“What the hell!? Where'd they get all that paint?” Deryk asked in confusion.

“It isn't paint, it's makeup. Very expensive makeup,” Kaidan said, causing Deryk and Shepard to look at each other in confusion.

“It's Cyan's makeup bag,” Vaan chimed in, causing Deryk and Shepard to burst into laughter.

“Our babies have great taste,” Deryk said with a grin.

“Tell Cyan we'll reimburse her for the loss. And, uh, Gray, what the hell's up with your hair? It looks a little blue.”

“I was Remy's first guinea pig. This is an improvement, by the way,” Grayson explained.

“Do you need us to come home early?” Deryk asked, both he and Shepard already missing their children terribly.

“We don't want to ruin what's left of your vacation,” Kaidan replied.

“I talked to Mama and Papa today. They're free to come to Vancouver. And we were thinking that maybe they could use the jet and bring the kids to Banff. We're starting to miss the hell out of them, and Mama and Papa love it here. But we'll only arrange it if you guys are cool with it. We don't want you guys to think we're not appreciative of you,” Deryk said, causing Grayson and Kaidan to laugh.

“If that's what y'all want, we'll help make it happen,” Grayson promised.

“Thanks, Gray,” Shepard said before turning his attention to Vaan. “Are you doing anything the rest of the week?”

“Uh, I'm on duty for you this week. Why?” Vaan asked curiously.

“Bring Chester and come to Banff with Mom, Dad, and the kids. I'd feel better with you here to watch over them,” Shepard admitted, causing Vaan to smile.

“I'll start packing. Any ETA for Ric and Stella?”

“They'll be on the next available flight to Vancouver. I'll text you the details,” Deryk said as he and Shepard focused on their children. “Hey, how are my little hellions doing?”

“Papa,” the trio called out in unison as they gathered around the laptop.

“Where's Daddy?” Remy asked as he rubbed his left ear.

“I'm right here, baby boy,” Shepard said, grinning as he leaned in closer to Deryk so the children could see him.

“We miss you,” Kiefer said, prompting Deryk to reveal their plans.

“How would you like to join Daddy and me in Banff?”

“Yay,” the triplets said, throwing their hands up and cheering enthusiastically.

“I think they're excited,” Shepard said, his smile widening.

“Oma and Opa will be there soon to bring you to Banff. Be good, and do as they say. We'll see you soon. We love you.”

“Love you too,” the trio said as they blew their fathers kisses before turning to play with Chester.

“Well, we better get things ready on our end. We'll see you soon. Grayson and K, we owe you. We love you guys,” Deryk said.

“Anytime. We love you too,” Grayson replied.

“Gray, I want pictures of Remy's artwork,” Shepard insisted.

“I'll send them to you, Dove,” Kaidan said, earning a pout from Grayson.

“Thanks, K. We'll see y'all later,” Shepard said as the call ended.

“Well, things are about to get hectic. Who wants to help me bathe Chester?” Vaan asked, causing all three kids to raise their hands.

“That's what I thought,” Vaan said with a chuckle as he turned to Kaidan and Grayson. “You two aren't off the hook yet. I'll need your help with the kids.”

Grayson sighed but reluctantly agreed.

“If this past week has taught me anything, it's that I might be too damn old for this,” Grayson said as he draped his arm around Kaidan's shoulders.

“I have to agree. We are lucky that our kids are older. But I have to admit, you are awfully adorable with them,” Kaidan said, causing Grayson to snort.

“Yeah, well, they're easy to love.”

“Yes, they are. Still, I'm perfectly happy being an uncle.”

“Me too, Doc! I love being Uncle Gray.”

“Uncle Gray,” Liannah called out before offering her hand to him.

“Yes, princess,” Grayson replied.

“Carry me,” she demanded.

“Yes, ma'am,” Grayson said as he picked her up.

“This was a good week, wasn't it?” Kaidan asked as they followed Vaan and the boys to the washroom.

“It really wasn't. I wouldn't have traded it for anything,” Grayson thought as he kissed Liannah's temple.
