Work Text:
Long after lights-out, Masha and their bunkmates continue their hushed conversation about the things they’ve missed since arriving at Camp Reality Check: “I’m still worried that my cat doesn’t understand why I’m gone, but I really miss painting my nails and choosing my own clothes, too,” Masha whispers. “What about you, Luz?”
A long silence passes before an answer comes from the bunk above theirs – “My old life was nothing like yours” – and although Masha won’t understand how true those words are until months later, when their friend reveals just how much of an outsider she really is, something stops them from asking any more questions tonight.
