Don't Leave Me (It can't be that easy, Babe)

Summary:

You were a medic in the military, alongside Bucky as you'd tend to his wounds whenever he'd need after a long day of fighting in the war. You two had joined together, intending to spend the rest of your lives together until something unexpected happened, being pulled apart from each other in the worst way possible.

Notes:

I actually haven't written this much in a long time, sorry if some stuff is inaccurate even though I've watched these movies like a billion times, after seeing Bucky in Thunderbolts* I was immediately pulled out of my 3 year writers block and knew what I had to do (also tried to make this as gender neutral as possible so I hope I'm doing everyone justice)

Chapter Text

1940’s

The brisk cool air hit your face as you walked down the street, the evening was nice. Everything was perfect, your hand intertwined with Buckys’ as you two were going to meet with Steve at a local bar. You couldn’t help but notice Bucky staring at you from the corner of your eye, not even looking ahead as you were. He was admiring you, it made you feel giddy, your heart fluttered. You knew this was the man you’d spend the rest of your life with, he looked at you with so much love.

“How’re you feeling, sweetheart?” Bucky slung his arm over your shoulders and pulled you closer, his warmth making you feel better as the wind hit your face once more.

“Excited,” You grinned at the thought of seeing Steve, finally getting to see your friend again. You had been so busy with medic work, helping wounded soldiers. It was a hassle, but you were one of the best. At least you were heavily appreciated, and helped out a ton of people. “This week has been so hectic. I’m glad we’re getting together like this again.”

“Tell me about it,” He scoffs while smiling, looking down at the concrete sidewalk you both walked on. “Don’t worry, we still got Stark Expo before we go back out there.”

“Hope this is all over soon. The war, I mean.” You sigh at your wishful thinking, all you wanted was to settle down with the love of your life. Buy a house together, it was all you dreamed of but the war made it impossible to stay in one spot.

“I know how you feel. When it is over, I'll make you the happiest person in the world, sweetie.”

“What if I already am?” You smile at his words before turning to look into his beautiful blue eyes. Looking at you like you were the only one on this planet.

“Then I guess my mission is accomplished.” He tilted his head before giving you a kiss on the cheek, you leaned into him as he held you close. Nothing could ruin what you two had. You felt like you finally found someone special. Soon enough you two made it to the bar and saw Steve there. The three of you had known each other for a very long time, your own circle of friends. Even if it was just two. One of them being your boyfriend but who’s really counting.

“Any pretty girls catch your eye, Stevie?” Bucky teased him, all while holding you by your waist.

“I haven't...exactly looked around.” He responds a bit unsure, his eyes skimming around the area.

“Don't tell me you're going to enlist again.” Bucky immediately knew what Steve was thinking, ever since he got rejected from the military he's been trying time and time again. “They rejected you for a reason.” He said bluntly before withdrawing his harshness. “I just don't want to see you get hurt.”

“I want to help people, Bucky. I'm doing this because I want to.” Steve replies with certainty. You knew all he wanted to do, was do good. He never hurt anyone, but the streets of Brooklyn were harsh.

“How about we all take our minds off the war, just for tonight. Please?” You cut into their conversation. It had been a rough month for all three of you, for similar or for different reasons. The three of you sat at a table, some people went dancing, others drank to their heart's content. Without the promise of tomorrow nobody had a care in the world, that's what it seemed anyway.

“So who wants to get the first round?” Bucky piped up, looking at you and Steve expectantly.

“Don't make Steve get them, we all know what happened last time.” You sighed and shook your head. “Said he didn't look old enough to drink so then I had to go get them.”

“Ah..forgot about that.” Bucky thought for a moment before remembering the particular incident. You pat Steve's back,

“Don't worry, I know plenty of short guys. We'll have Bucky get the drinks this time.”

He shrugged his shoulders, “Might be for the best.” Though he looked a bit sad, he didn't let it ruin his mood.

A few minutes go by and Bucky comes back with the drinks, you don't drink too much with the intention of going dancing later. Your boyfriend would never miss an opportunity to dance with you.

It seemed like no amount of alcohol would deter him from asking you to dance. You knew this from a past experience, a funny memory to say the least. You smile at the thought of it as the two of them spoke about some stuff they heard around the city in the background of your thoughts.

“May I have this dance, sweetie?” He smirked as he extended his hand to you. It had been years and you still felt the same sparks as when you two first fell in love.

“When have I ever said no?” You giggled and took his hand in yours. His hand on your waist, yours on his shoulder as he took you to dance. He twirled you once, twice, you fell back into his arms everytime like clockwork.

He held you so gently, with so much care. The song was slow, and romantic. You looked deep into Buckys’ eyes and all you could see was how deeply in love he was with you. You were sure he could see the same in your eyes.

“Having fun?” He cupped your face, stroking your cheek with his thumb as he smiled.

“With you? Always.” You leaned into his touch, his warm hand settled onto your cold skin. A feeling you would never get tired of no matter how many times you felt it.

The rest of the night was a blur, the rest of those days felt the same. Like something was missing. A part of your memory wasn't quite there. You vaguely remembered Stark Expo, Steve attempting to enlist again then there was a blank in your memory.

Notes:

Scared to post on here since last time I considered (earlier last year) to do so I got into a car crash then almost a plane crash in the span of 18 days lucky me! But now I'm back and I'm hoping my writing isn't dogshit
