Work Text:

He can’t sleep.

Izuku rolls over onto his back for the fifth time. He stares up at the ceiling, tapping his thumbs together impatiently. He slaps the blanket folds at his waist, blindly feeling for his phone. 12:47am . Izuku is too awake this late into the night.

It’s not anxiety, it’s not stress (for once), and he’d have to be asleep for it to be a nightmare. He’s just awake.

Izuku presses his palms into his eyes, pissed off.

He has tried it all. He tried meditation, counting sheep, turning on a sleep machine, a podcast, and some stretching. He couldn’t get comfortable. Izuku could’ve read something, but he knows better than to wake himself up even more with analysis and hero records.

Everything is a bit off tonight. The bedroom feels too big, the air stiff and thin. His blanket is tangled up underneath and over him. The All Might poster on his wall feels like it’s mocking him, eyes wide with the speech bubble screaming, “You Can Do It!!”. It doesn’t feel encouraging with the near two hours awake he’s dealt with.

The idea comes to him too easily.

If he can’t relax in his room, Izuku will have to find the solution somewhere else.

Izuku sits up, throwing his weight off his bed, almost bouncing onto the floor. He slips on his slippers and sneaks out the door without another thought.

His footsteps echo against the tile floor. The only sound in the dorms may as well be his slippers sliding, it’s so quiet. Not even 1am, Izuku doesn’t want to wake anybody up with his noise tonight. Luckily, he knows he doesn’t need to go far, only down the hall.

Shoto’s door stands in front of him and Izuku almost knocks out of pure habit. It’s not the first time they’ve hung out late at night, but it’s the first time like this. It feels like a secret, sneaking in like this, one Izuku wants to hold close to his heart. He holds the handle tight as he twists it open, trying to not make a sound.

His room always reminds Izuku of home, maybe not his home necessarily, but like the kind of furniture showroom of a home. It’s cozy and clean like that. Shoto has definitely made it his own from their first move in with his knick knacks and furniture. There’s always more green than Izuku expects.

The door clicks closed behind him as Izuku kicks off his slippers. He tiptoes close to the bed, peeking over at Shoto. He’s sleeping soundly, the comforter pulled all the way up to his nose.

Izuku crouches over and nudges Shoto’s shoulder.

“Mm…’zuku?” Shoto mumbles. He blinks his eyes twice up at Izuku, slow and heavy, his voice is raspy from sleep. He looks like a baby kitten, curled up like this. It warms Izuku’s heart. A sappy smile spreads across Izuku’s face. “What are you doing here?”

“I couldn’t sleep. I was uncomfortable and thought I’d come over here,” he explains, whispering as to not disturb the sleepy atmosphere. His words catch up to his head. What the hell was he even saying? Izuku can feel his face flush at the confession as he tries to defend himself. “Wait, no, I meant— well, no, I really couldn’t sleep, but I thought the change of scenery would help and I thought of…your room,” he rambles, it’s a great explanation, really.

Izuku drags his hands down his face, his words trail off. He didn’t really think his night through, he just thought of Shoto and jumped out of bed. “And now I woke you up and—“

“It’s fine.”

“What?” Izuku’s hands fall from his face. The answer catches him off guard. Shoto stares back up at him, face neutral and unbothered by Izuku’s frantic state, his hair all tousled from the pillow.

Shoto lifts the side of the blanket closest to the wall. “It’s fine,” he repeats, “You can crawl over.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks,” Izuku blanks. Turns out, he didn’t need a plan for tonight. He minds his limbs as he shuffles over Shoto, tucking himself against the wall while Shoto stays at the outside edge of the bed. Immediately, Izuku melts into the bed. It’s soft and Shoto’s body heat warms the sheets.

Shoto throws the side of the comforter over Izuku, his arm falls into Izuku’s side underneath the blanket, pressing snugly on his skin.

Before Izuku can even process the touch, Shoto curls into Izuku and there’s a pair of lips against his forehead. Izuku freezes, his eyes go wide. Heat rushes to his face, Izuku’s cheeks and ears burn in embarrassment.

What does he even say?

Maybe if he doesn’t move, Izuku will be swallowed up by the blanket and hide forever.

On the other side of the bed, Shoto doesn’t react, he falls back onto the pillow with his eyes closed like nothing happened. Then he stiffens, his eyes flutter back open. Shoto starts to pull his arm away, looking mortified through his wide eyes.

Panic stabs through Izuku’s heart. His own confusion and embarrassment is overwhelmed by the comforting warmth around him. He doesn’t want to let it go. Izuku props himself up on his elbow, hovering over Shoto. “Wait–it’s fine!” he blurts out. His voice is louder than he expected in the silence.

“I was afraid I made you uncomfortable,” Shoto replies.

“No, no, I’m–I’m very comfortable,” Izuku corrects.

The next moment wasn’t unexpected. Shoto gives him every sign, every opportunity to anticipate his next move. Izuku watches Shoto’s eyes trail down his face to his lips, frozen in place as Shoto’s hand trails up his arm to land on his cheek.

Izuku’s breath hitches as Shoto leans in.

Shoto’s lips are light against his, it’s barely a kiss, but it excites Izuku all the same. He clutches Shoto’s hand at his face, holding him close. Izuku presses against Shoto happily, fireworks and cannons going off in his head as Shoto smiles softly into their kiss.

Their first kiss!

Izuku saw him close his eyes and move closer, but never in his life did he expect Shoto Todoroki to kiss him. It’s everything he could’ve hoped for.

Shoto’s the first to pull away, running his thumb over Izuku’s cheekbones before he flops back onto his pillow. “Izuku, can we sleep now?”

“Yes! Yeah, we can sleep,” Izuku stammers. His mind is a complete blur, in shock after the kiss, but he settles down into the bed again.

Shoto curls on his side again, his arm wraps easily over Izuku’s shoulders again. The nerves weren’t blaring in his head anymore as Shoto pulled him close against his chest. Izuku snakes his own arm around Shoto’s middle, tucking himself into Shoto’s collarbone.

His eyelashes bat against Shoto’s skin, face flushed, “Are you comfy?”

Shoto hums in agreement, “Are you?” Izuku nods earnestly. He's so comfortable that he’s already dreading the morning. Shoto pats his back, his eyes already closed again, satisfied with the answer. “Okay, sleep now.”

Izuku can’t help, but laugh at Shoto’s bluntness. He tangles their legs together and pulls Shoto even closer, chest to chest. There’s another sleepy kiss pressed into his hair and Izuku knows there'll be more tomorrow too.
