Work Text:

Standing alone in the middle of the crowd, Davyd feels both with his people and alone as fuck. He’d been annoyed that no one would come to see Billy Talent play with him. Oh they all had good reasons, it was a work night, it was all the way in London, but none of that mattered. Billy fucking Talent! It would be a concert for the ages! Bunch of tasteless wankers.

So he’s come up alone, which he doesn’t mind too much, but he sure is bored waiting in between sets. Davyd lets his eyes wander aimlessly on the multitude of faces in the crowd. Some are smiling, or blank, many yet are talking animatedly.

Then one face in particular catches Davyd’s eye. The guy stands out a few inches above the sea of people, also scanning the crowd leisurely. Their gaze cross for a moment, and while the guy's eyes continue on their way, Davyd can’t help but stare.

He’s handsome, with long brown hair and a thick beard framing harsh features and pale eyes. Curious, Davyd goes up on his toes to try and see who the guy is with. As he strains to look, Davyd has a thought about how fortunate the guy is to be that tall, which gives him a clear view of the stage, unlike Dav who has to shift every couple of minutes as people keep moving.

As far as Davyd can tell, the guy seems to be alone. He’s settled looking forward again, arms crossed and waiting. A little shiver goes down Dav’s spine as he considers going up to him.

He’s never done that, go up to a guy out of the blue. The few ones he’d gone out or hooked up with had been setups, friends of friends.

Dav shakes his head. He’d chatted girls up no problem, he could do the same with a man. If he gets turned down, it would sting, but he’d have to walk away just the same. No biggie.

And he’d had luck before with Billy Talent enthusiasts. He thinks back about the cute German girl he’d met at that DJ gig in Stuttgart. Try Honesty had been playing, and she’d been all smiles as Dav laid down his charm. They’d had a fun weekend before he’d gone back to the UK.

Mustering all his daring and shit-talking abilities, Davyd picks his way through the crowd, apologizing as he nudges people out of his way. “My friend is over there.” he nods towards the tall guy when someone complains. It’s only half a lie.

Then there he is, standing next to him, and Davyd finds himself rooted to the spot. It suddenly seems like an insurmountable task to just accost a strange man in a crowd. He’s about to turn away and abandon the project when someone bumps into him and throws him against the handsome stranger, who starts but reaches out reflexively to catch him.

“Hey, you okay there mate?”
“Yeah, yeah, sorry, didn’t mean to-” Davyd sputters, suddenly looking into those bright blue eyes.

He straightens up, looking around because he finds it a bit too intense to hold Tall Guy’s frown. He clears his throat however, because this his chance and jitters be damned, he’s going to shoot his shot.

“So, uhm, it’s a bit awkward, isn’t it, coming to a gig alone?” Davyd says nonchalantly as he turns to look up at Tall Guy again, who’s peering at him curiously, then glances around inquisitively, “I mean… are you? Alone?”
“Yeah. I just moved here a couple months ago and I don’t know anyone who’s into Billy yet, so. Didn’t want to miss out, though, so here I am.”

Davyd nods, picking up on Tall Guy’s northern accent. “Yeah, none of my so-called friends wanted to make the trip on a week-day so, here I am alone too. But like you said, wouldn’t want to miss it.”

There’s a beat of silence, and Tall Guy is still eyeing him.

“Maybe we’re at the gig together? I'm Dav by the way.” he smiles, holding his hand out.
“Kris.” The other one says, frown wiped away by a bright smile as he shakes Dav’s hand. ”It is nice to enjoy a gig with a friend.”

Davyd can’t help but grin stupidly, friend is a good start. And now that the guy, Kris, is smiling at him, he’s good to go, he can talk for hours. They keep chatting as they wait for the band to come onstage, and Dav flirts more and more openly, and his lucky star must be shining down on him because Dav could swear Kris is flirting back.

When the lights dim and the intro music starts playing Davyd is almost delirious with the euphoria of the concert and the high of having this handsome guy with him. They sing and jump, periodically looking at each other to scream bits of lyrics while Dav holds on to Kris’ shoulder for stability.

Then somehow the crowd moves in such a way that Kris ends up standing behind Davyd, hand flat and secure on Davyd’s back so he doesn’t lose him. Dav can feel it, white-hot like a brand through his t-shirt. He keeps moving to the beat of the music, leaning back against the solid pillar of Kris’ torso, grinning to himself as Kris’ arm snakes around his middle, and they keep kind of dancing together, just the two of them in the waves of people.

As the last notes of the concert ring out and the band say their goodbyes, Davyd can only think of one thing that would end this night on the perfect note. He just has to push his luck, so he turns around just as Kris’ arm loosens from holding him, and goes up on his tiptoes (damn Kris is tall).

It seems Kris sees him coming from a mile away, and Dav is delighted to find him leaning into him, kissing back as soon as their lips touch, grip on Davyd growing tighter as he pulls him closer and holds on to the soft flesh of his hips. Someone whistles loudly nearby and Dav grows suddenly shy, hiding his face in Kris’ shoulder and reveling in the scratch of his beard against his cheek as Kris guffaws and hugs him tight.

“Come on, they’re starting to throw people out onto the street.” Kris says warmly as he pulls on Davyd’s arm.

Dav’s not ready to let go, doesn’t want the moment to end, but stepping out sure feels like returning to reality. Outside feels unbearably cold after the heat of thousands of bodies moving in the amphitheater, and especially standing close to Kris all evening.

He knows he want to see Kris again, so by the time they’ve reached a somewhat open area as turns to him, Davyd is pushing his phone into his hands.

“I've got a train to catch, but d’you think I could have your number?” he says cheekily, confident in his request because Kris’ fingers are already moving along the touchscreen.

When Kris hands him the phone back, Dav grabs his hand and goes up for another quick kiss, smiling into Kris’ mouth. Then he pulls away and looks at the time.

“Oh fuck, gotta go!” he exclaims, smiling apologetically before bolting, he doesn't want to wait over an hour for the next train.

“Well, at least I got a kiss before Cinderella ran off.” he hears Kris laugh as he hurries away, which reassures him that Kris isn't affronted by his sudden departure.

Still, Dav wants to make sure Kris gets his number, so he sends him a quick text as he walks. Because he can't wait to see him again.

*Free saturday? 😉

Immediately 3 dots appear on the screen, which makes Davyd smile.

*Sure. There's a great Indian restaurant near my place if you'd like.

*I'll have my pumpkin carriage ready 🎃

A set plan, and near Kris’ place sounds promising. Davyd can't help but smile wide as he waits for his train, feeling warm and giddy despite his breath forming clouds in the cold air around him.

Notes:

Title based on the song Try Honesty by Billy Talent. Duh.
