Work Text:

Verso had been aware that his relationship with Sciel was mostly sex. The first time Sciel proposed to be adventurous, he smiled and went with it - Why not he said to himself. And as the time went by, Sciel and he became much closer, she started to confide in him, he started to have feelings that were just more … Maybe it wasn’t love - no they haven’t known each other for that long to call it love, and yet the more he got to know her he cared for her more than he was supposed to.

Sciel came to him at night - always when she felt herself thinking about her past. She had told him about her husband and her child and everything that made her what she was in the present.

When Maelle told them she could actually bring back everyone, Verso had looked at Sciel and knew immediately by her expression alone that she had hope to find this life again.

He should be happy for her, he should be glad for Sciel, but all he could think about was how unfair life was again. He knew how important her husband had been - how he still was and he will be.

He had to get past it, he shook it off his mind and Verso decided to go see her and talk after the day’s mission.

“You know that changes things.” Sciel had said when he asked teasingly for another one of their adventures

“I know,” Verso softly replied. His eyes glanced at the ground, he breathed out loud and left Sciel alone.

Verso couldn’t hold grudges against Sciel, he knew it would be unfair to blame her. Sciel would have never gone over her love for her husband and that was that. At least, she was always honest about everything. He should be thankful about that.

That night he decided to write down his thoughts, he ended up writing musical notes. Verso didn’t know how long it had been since the last time he did. He recalled briefly how Lune had been writing songs on their resting nights. The thought made Verso smile.

He conjured his piano with a flick of magic in front of him before hearing footsteps behind him - it was Lune.

She waved at him slowly, making her way toward him. She was still wary about our day - after all she fought the creature that killed her parents. They didn’t talk at first so Verso decided to sit in front of the piano and played some notes. After a while he heard Lune thanking him.

“There’s nothing to thank me about,” Verso said gently, facing her slowly. Lune was watching him closely.

“Shouldn’t you be with Sciel at this time of day or should I say tonight?” She suddenly asked, her face unreadble. It was such a Lune way to say things this way, that made Verso breath out a laugh. Almost forgetting his ealier mood.

“Well, not anymore.” Verso replied pointedly, playing a sombre note on the piano. “I think…I think I’ll never be anyone’s first choice.” his finger drifted over the keys, the notes lingering in the quiet space around them. He continued playing for a time and they both stayed silent until he was done.

At last, Lune broke the silence by sitting next to him.

“You were my first choice, you know.”

At that Verso frowned, he didn’t understand or he shoudln’t understand what she was trying to say.

“What ?” He asked, stunned.

“Yes,” she whispered in a voice that almost didn’t sound like her at all. If anything, Lune was nothing but shy.

“You know I briefly considered coming to say this before - you know - kind of betrayed us but you were always with Sciel. I’m not jealous, don’t worry, it just seemed unfair to her to tell you how I felt.” About you. She meant to say, but it hung in the air. She glanced at the piano’s note only to press one randomly.

“I had no idea,” Verso finally said.
“Yeah, I know.” Lune shook her head, amused by how shocked Verso looked.
“Are youmessing with me or something? After what I just told you…”
“I’m not.”
“You know that would be unkind, right?”
“I’m not joking, Verso.”

Her hand, which had just been resting on the piano key, found his. They were facing each other now.

“I have another kind of hope now, Verso, for Lumière, for my people. For us.”

One hand squeezing his while her other came to his cheek. Her warmth almost shocked him more than the proximity.

Verso watched closely Lune, her expression felt raw. There was a sensibility that she never really let people see and yet Verso saw it. His heart beat faster now, he leaned forward to close in the space between them. At last, Verso kissed her lips gently as he closed his eyes. He shouldn’t like how she felt against him, but he did. He tried hard not to think about Sciel, but it still stung. Lune’s lip moved harder pressing her tongue against him so she could play a little with his. He breathed louder now. Before he knew it they parted.

“Lune… I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Do you love her?”

“Not…really, I care about her. I just don’t want you to feel like I did, by being…a second choice.”

“I’m the one who came to you, Verso. Knowingly.” She said gently, caressing his cheek with her thumb. “Let me decide if you hurt me or not.”

Lune kissed him again, this time more pressing as if she had something to lose. And Verso replied with the same fervor. He felt the world shift with their closeness, and hope he would feel this again with her.

Notes:

So I just finished Clair Obscur, I cried of course and after all that I feel like Verso deserved to be kissed okay :-'(
