Work Text:
The Cross Country Team met up once a week during the off season, even though all current members would graduate soon. The warm May weather allowed their team to only have to do off-season training, and to begin conditioning in the summer should they choose to continue their sport in college.
The evening sky was slowly turning a darker shade of blue, some thunder rolling in the distance from a few towns over. Just a few small droplets of water began to fall from the sky as Susie patiently waited for her girlfriend to finish up with her teammates Jockington and Temmie. She decided to sit down and place the umbrella Toriel had allowed (forced, really) Susie to borrow on the ground as she waited, bouncing her leg.
Far, echoed voices travelled from the far side of the cement steps as she turned around to face the three monsters grouped together in what seemed like casual conversation. The three were interrupted by a far away thunderclap, and they quickly said their goodbyes.
Noelle rushed over to Susie, golden waves bouncing down each step from her ponytail. She opened her arms and quickly embraced her girlfriend. “Susie!” She held their hug for a moment longer before letting go and locking eyes with her.
“Heh, miss me?” Susie asked smugly.
“Not as much as you probably missed me, you soft sap!” She nudged Susie’s arm lightly.
Susie pressed her lips in a fine line and dramatically rolled her eyes. “Yep! You caught me red handed here, just arrest me already,” she replied in a sarcastic tone. It was fun to tease Susie this way; she seemed to respond better to this style of flirting as opposed to something more direct and complimentary. The first few times Noelle had attempted to flirt with her ended in a very flustered and embarrassed Susie from being called a hot piece of work.
It might be a good idea to stop taking dating advice from her father.
The two walked from the bleachers over to the sidewalk. They made it a habit to walk each other to wherever they needed to go as an excuse to spend time together as Noelle would be expected to attend university in a different city many, many miles away. It was Susie’s idea honestly, to make it a point to spend time together whenever they could as summer break would come and end sooner rather than later. High school graduation would be in just a few short weeks and everyone would be going their separate ways. It was also Susie’s idea to start working shifts around town, accompanying Miss Boom in driving her to her appointments, working for Asgore to do things he couldn’t do comfortably anymore, and being a relief cashier at Sans’ convenience store to save up enough money for a much better phone suited for video calling. Her old, cracked brick of a phone could barely answer a phone call, and she couldn’t take it if she couldn’t talk to her girlfriend so many miles away.
They held hands as they walked past many viridescent trees and the town Librarby. A comfortable silence was shared between them. The occasional droplet of water turned into a light drizzle which queued Susie to promptly take off her jacket and place it over Noelle’s head. She looked up with a small smile, and leaned in closer to Susie. The purple monster used her free arm to wrap it around her girlfriend and opened the umbrella with the other, covering them both.
Noelle’s interest was piqued as they passed by Sans’ shop. “Would you wanna grab a snack with me, Susie? I don’t want a full meal but I could go for something small! Plus we’ll be inside for a little bit.” She mentioned, pointing over to the lit window. Susie nodded, her stomach grumbling at the thought of having something to eat.
“Like you even have to ask,” she mumbled as she opened the door for both of them to enter.
The tall monster looked over to a sleeping Sans hunched over the counter and shook her head, rolling her eyes. It was a miracle this place was still running with him being so relaxed about their sales. No wonder she was hired, honestly.
They made their way to the candy aisle, Noelle scanning for something fruity as Susie immediately went for a packet of jerky. She opened it to put the entirety of its contents inside her jowls, which earned a stressed and unamused expression from Noelle.
“At least pay for it first, that’s so rude!”
“Hey it’s fine! I work here- he lets me grab whatever I want when I’m working!” She motioned over to the sleeping Sans. “Besides, he owes me for covering him so last minute last week. Something about Toriel and him hanging out or something,” she said with a straight face, eyes narrowed and looking away.
Noelle face softened. “Wait… that’s actually really sweet of you, Susie.”
“LOOK-!” She silently yelled, “I did it for her, not for him!
Noelle shook her head as she laughed. “Yeah, okay sure! I am so going to tell her you said that.”
“Like hell you are!”
She ended up selecting a small bag of sour gummy worms. Susie insisted she take the bag and leave, insisting she’d “charge her for it next time I worked.”
“What, is that an excuse for me to come visit you?”
“Whatever! If you don’t want to just say that!”
The two left without leaving a penny on the counter.
They found themselves behind the shop underneath the awning, barely covered from the thick droplets of rain surrounding them. The two enjoyed their snacks as they spoke about nothing.
Noelle rested her head on her girlfriend’s shoulder and sighed. This moment of bliss was interrupted by a chuckling Susie.
“What’s so funny?” Noelle asked out of genuine curiosity.
The taller monster paused in a cold sweat and looked away before answering.
“It’s just that, and please don’t hate me, but. Your…. antlers. They poke me every time you do that- anditscute! It’s fine it’s just, y’know! Funny.” She shrugged, giving her girlfriend a small grin and putting her hands out in a defensive position.
Noelle quickly raised her head and gasped- it’s not like she could help their growth! They fall out every few months and she looked ridiculous with just the one should they choose to fall off at different times. This isn’t fair. Why would she even say that?!
“Well it sounds like you’re just going to have to get used to it!” She shrugged and shook her head exasperatedly. “I can’t believe you’re making fun of me. That’s not very nice, Susie.” She crossed her arms and pretended to huff and pout.
“Wha- I just said it was cute! What do you want me to say, that’s it’s bad and never do it again?” She asked, crossing her arms. The two pretended to be mad for just a moment longer before Susie gave up first. “What are you even doing, come back,” she said as she uncrossed her arms.
Noelle looked at the other monster’s shoulder for a moment before pondering.
“Hmm… I dunno.” She squinted her eyes in a playful way, “Will you let me hold onto your arm? As a peace treaty?” A smile crept up to her lips as she looked into Susie’s eyes.
A small blush came upon the purple monster as she extended her arm slightly as an offer. “Just come here already.”
Noelle happily obliged, taking hold of her bicep and resting her head on her shoulder again, closing her eyes and enjoying the moment.
The rain had passed just enough to notice a faint rainbow forming over the horizon.
