Maddie held her tail in her hands and squeezed it nervously, a habit she had developed recently. Much to the amusement of her parents. The thought caused her to pause and a small smile tugged against her lips. She has been living with Godzilla and Mothra for almost a year now and it was becoming easier and easier by the day to call them her parents.
“Pup are you alright?” she looked over to see Godzilla watching her, his face showing the slightest hints of concern. “I’m fine papa, or… no i’m not, well I am but… oh!!” She felt her face heat up as she buried her face in her hands to try and hide how flustered she was. She felt Godzilla move closer and then she felt his hot breath hitting her arms. “Easy Pup, take your time, did something happen that upset you? Another nightmare?” Godzllla’s concern was now clear as it radiated through their connection in strong, rough waves that reminded her of the ocean during a storm.
Before she could reply she felt a much softer yet equally strong wave of concern blossom from her bond with Mothra, this time reminding her of a strong, but not crushing, hug. “Oh Maddie, was it as bad as last time?” Maddie shook her head and let out a small laugh as she looked up, seeing Godzilla’s snout only a few feet from her. Mothra, who had been resting on Godzilla’s spines, moved to stand to the left of his snout. “I didn’t have a nightmare, I just… I needed to talk to you two about something… important.” She felt her tail find its way back into her hands.
Godzilla’s concern morphed into a combination of mainly curiosity with a bit of concern in the background. Mothra was similar but she was a bit better at hiding her concern. “What is it Pup?”
Maddie took a deep breath and gave her tail a tight, almost painful, squeeze before she dropped it and looked both her parents in the eyes, or the best she was able to at least with how close they were. She gulped to swallow her nerves “I want to try and find my fa-, my d- uuugh, the man that raised me.” As soon as the words left her mouth she could feel the two titans in front of her freeze both physically and in their bonds.
She stood there silently for what felt like hours before Mothra finally broke the silence. “W-well, while we will of course help you with anything you want or need, I think I speak for both your father and I when I say… why? Or more accurately, why all of a sudden?” All Maddie could feel from Godzilla was a spark of agreement, though he stayed silent.
Maddie sighed and looked at her feet. “Well honestly I want answers. I need to know if he knew what I was and if … if he was in on the whole thing. You two are my parents, my mama and my papa, and I want- no I need you two to know that nothing will change that and I don’t want it to change, ever, I love you guys. But until I know for sure I’ll always wonder if he was just like her or if maybe he thought I was his actual daughter.” Once she was done she saw tears fall from her cheeks and hit the ground.
There was a moment of silence until Godzilla moved forward and pressed his snout against her. “Oh Pup, don’t think for even a moment we feared you didn’t love us. And don’t you think for a moment that wanting this will make us stop loving you. If this is something you feel you need to know, then like Mothra said, we will do anything we can to help you get your answers.” Maddie felt Mothra press against her as well and she did her best to hug them both as any hope of stopping her tears went out the window.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took a couple days to work out how they were going to get the answers that Maddie needed. After all they weren’t quite sure how to get in contact with Mark but Maddie decided that the easiest and safest way to do this was to go to a Monarch base and have him come to her. This idea brought up the concern of Emma learning where Maddie was and trying to get to her. Of course this was something that could not be allowed to happen so they knew that whatever base they chose to do this at would have to be one that Godzilla and Mothra could get to without causing a mass panic. With only a little thinking Godzilla thought of the perfect base. It was in the middle of the ocean and outside human ship routes.
With the location decided Maddie, Mothra, and Godzilla considered both options of if Mark was in on it, or if he wasn’t. The first was obvious, if he knew or was in on it then Maddie would leave and never even think of the human parasites that dared to call themselves her parents. On the other hand, if he didn’t know and only ever saw Maddie as his daughter, then they weren’t really sure what they would do.
Regardless Maddie knew she wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it if she didn’t do this. That didn’t stop her nerves from getting worse and worse the closer they got to the base they had chosen and once it was within range of sight her nerves were to the point that she was all but ready to turn around and try again another day. She groaned and shook her head to steel herself. “You can do this Maddie, you can do this.” she hadn’t intended to say it aloud but she suddenly felt comfort being pushed through her bond with Godzilla clueing her in that she had done just that, which drew a second groan, this time in embarrassment.
“It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by your nerves Pup, just remember that your mother and I will be close by should the humans try anything or should you need us for anything at all.” Godzilla told her with pure understanding and support. Maddie, who was riding on top of Godzilla’s back as he swam through the water, gave a small hug to one of his spines in thanks but said nothing in return.
They drew closer and once they were about 600 meters away(about 5 Godzilla’s or roughly 2,000 feet) Godzilla came to a slow halt in the water and his spines started to glow, showing him charging his star-fire. Maddie was a little confused and more than a little concerned, so she moved closer to his head. “Is everything alright? Why did we stop?” Godzilla huffed, sounding annoyed. “They have some large weapons low underwater on this base, they have them pointed at me.” Godzilla growled. Maddie’s concern immediately skyrocketed. “Do you think they can hurt you? Or worse?” Godzilla quickly flooded the bond with comforting waves. “I doubt it Pup, humans have yet to hit me with anything that will do more than annoy me. My concern is whether these weapons will hurt you Pup. They are likely explosive in nature and should one hit near you or worse hit you directly, I do fear that you would not survive it.” Maddie’s body shuddered at the thought but she spread her wings. “Should I fly the rest of the way?” Godzilla was hesitant with his answer but Maddie did feel his approval slowly flow through the bond. “That would probably be the best option, I doubt they are aware you are even here yet. They are unlikely to use such large weaponry on you as well but be on guard Pup, Mothra, are you close?” Godzilla tilted his head slightly to look into the sky.
Maddie felt the bond with Mothra blossom open moments before she heard her mothers call as she looked up to see Mothra’s silowet through the clouds as she passed over Godzilla and herself. “I’m right here my love’s, ready should the humans try anything. Maddie, would you like me to land with you?” Maddie closed her eyes, though she was able to communicate through the bond, it did require a little extra focus to do so. “No Mama, I should be alright, they might not approach me if you’re there.” Maddie opened her eyes, took a deep breath to steel her nerves, and with a strong flap of her wings and a jump she took off for the Monarch base.
It took her only a few minutes to fly the rest of the distance to the base, during the flight she took note of how the base looked like an oil rig. If it wasn’t for the fact that Godzilla had told her so, she would probably have assumed that an oil rig was all it was. As she got close she looked around at the base for an entrance. She quickly took notice of several ospreys on the large helipad at the top of the base with many people standing near the edge of the large platform, probably to look at either Godzilla or Mothra. Maddie decided that landing near them was the best idea, she could get one of them to radio someone in charge and have them come to her.
As she flew in closer more and more of the people on the helipad noticed she was there and more than a few looked like they were pulling out their radios. Maddie landed a bit past them and could only hope she looked at least somewhat graceful as she did so. She turned around to face the people she passed and almost burst out laughing at just how many of them had a shocked look on their face.
“Alright, I'm getting right to the point, I know this is a Monarch base and I want to speak to whoever is in charge here.” The people looked even more shocked and a few shared looks between them but none of them moved to do as she asked so Maddie flared her wings wide and yelled. “I said I want to speak to the person in charge of this base and I meant it NOW!!!!” She was a bit surprised at the volume her demand came out as it felt abnormal but it seemed to get her point across and several people grabbed their radios and began speaking into them.
Unfortunately her increase in volume had the less than shocking side effect of being seen as threatening so when Maddie heard the sound of footsteps behind her she wasn’t surprised to see a group of what she could guess were soldiers with their guns aimed at her. She quickly put her hands up to show that she wasn’t a threat. “Now there’s no need for those, I'm just here to talk, I'm not here to hurt anyone.” The group’s commander either didn’t believe her or didn’t care since they didn’t lower their weapons and even tried to order her around. “Lay face down on the ground and put your hands behind your back.” Maddie just rolled her eyes but before she could warn them about how dumb they were for aiming guns at the daughter of the very protective King and Queen of the titans the radio on the commander's shoulder started going off. While Maddie couldn’t make out what was being said she had a feeling the speaker was the person in charge of this base since the group was very quick to lower their guns.
“Is everything alright Pup?” Maddie closed her eyes with a small smile. “Yes Papa, I’m fine, just a few humans who thought they could order me around.” Maddie decided to not tell him about them aiming their guns at her, not yet anyway. She chuckled as she heard Godzilla give her a huff that told her he accepted her answer but he knew she wasn’t telling him the whole story. When she opened her eyes she saw that the commander was approaching her. “If you want to speak with someone in charge, you’ll need to come with me, I have been given permission to escort you to the director.” Maddie shook her head. “No, this ‘director’ will have to come to me, especially after you just had your guns aimed at me, I’m not going somewhere where I can't escape with a simple flap of my wings.” The commander sighed but stepped back and started speaking into his radio again.
Using her upper ears Maddie could make out a few words the man was speaking into his radio, most were unimportant but she did hear a familiar name of Serizawa, she thinks she’s heard that name before from Emma but she’s not sure of the circumstances in which she heard it and it sparked a little fear. Before her mind could wonder however the commander was moving back to her. “The director has a question he would like answered before he agrees to come up.” Maddie sighed and simply gestured for the man to say the question. “The director wants to know if the presence of Mothra and Godzilla is connected to your arrival here.” Maddie hesitated, not sure if that was safe information to give but decided that she would probably need to tell the whole story to get what she wanted so she nodded. The commander looked at her a bit shocked but did reach up to his radio and tell the other person on the radio her answer.
It took longer than expected for the reply to come through the radio. “Dr. Serizawa is on his way up to you.” The commander radioed his acknowledgement before he stepped back to his group. Before too long had passed she heard the door at the edge of the helipad slam open and when she turned she saw an older looking asian man with glasses who seemed slightly out of breath walking quickly over to her. Once he got within ten feet of her the commander stopped him and started speaking to him in quick whispers but if the older man cared about what the other man was saying he didn’t show it as he quickly stepped past him to get closer to her.
Maddie did notice a small group coming out of the same door that the older man had stepped out of but focused mainly on him. “Hello there, my name is Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, I am the current Director of Monarch. What did you wish to speak to me about? Does it have something to do with the Titans?” Maddie shook her head. “No or at least, not directly anyway. My name is Madison Amaryllis but it used to be Madison Russell and I have quite the story to tell you, if you don’t know it already.” Maddie did nothing to hide the accusatory tone during the last part.
Serizawa looked confused for a second but quickly his eyes widened in realization. “Russell? Madison Russell? As in Emma and Mark Russell’s dau-” Maddie quickly cut him off, trying her hardest to contain her anger. “I am not that woman;s child!” Seeing the surprise in his face at her outburst she sighed. “I’m sorry, it’s a bit of a long story but yes, I am the Madison you are thinking of. I’ll explain as much as I can later but I need you to get Mark Russell here, I have something I need to ask him.”
Serizawa looked understandably confused for a few seconds before he pushed his glasses up his nose slightly. “You want me to have just Mark Russell brought here? Not Emma?” Maddie nodded. “Exactly, in fact, I don’t want her anywhere near me.”
Serizawa seemed to accept her response but it was clear he had many questions. “Very well Madison, though I do feel the need to ask whether or not you intend to harm Mark?” Maddie rolled her eyes and shook her head. “No, I don't, I just have a question or two to ask him.” Serizawa nodded and turned to walk towards the small group that had followed him out and spoke with them for a few minutes. Once they were done talking Serizawa signaled the commander to come over with his squad of soldiers and spoke with them for another few minutes.
Once they were done talking the commander and his squad of soldiers, alongside an asian woman and a white, grey haired man, made their way over to an osprey. After a few minutes the osprey’s rotors spun up and began to take off.
However, before they could get very far, Mothra dropped down out of the clouds in front of the osprey with a screech, blocking it from going any further. Maddie quickly closed her eyes and focused on her bond with Mothra. “Mama it’s okay, you can let them pass, they’re going to bring Mark here so I can ask him my questions” She feels Mothra acknowledge what she said before she moves out of the way of the ospreys before returning to her circling of the base. With Mothra no longer blocking its path the osprey, after a moment of hesitation, started onward again.
Maddie watched it as it got farther away until she noticed that Dr. Serizawa had approached her again. “Madison, I have many questions I would like to ask you but I suspect the story you mentioned you had to tell me earlier will answer most if not all of them. Since the group I sent to retrieve Mark will take some time to do so, I think this story will be a good way to pass the time for you while giving me information on this situation I am missing.” Maddie nodded and began with the story of how her life had completely changed and some of her life on the island. She did however, hold back details that she either felt were too personal or details about Mothra and Godzilla that she was pretty sure they wouldn’t want the humans knowing and she made sure not to reveal the location of the island itself.
As she was telling a funny story about a sea turtle she had befriended a satellite phone on Serizawa’s hip and started going off. Serizawa stepped away to answer it and after only a few short minutes he was back. “That was the retrieval team, they have Mark with them and are on their way back now.” Maddie was happy but she was also extremely nervous and her tail quickly found its way into her hand. With this she decided she was done talking, not trusting herself to not say something she shouldn’t in a nervous ramble so she turned and walked to the edge of the platform to be alone.
She sat down with her legs dangling over the side of the platform. Her mind was a storm of the many ways the conversation with the man she had thought of as her dad for years could go, both good and bad, the longer she thought however, the outcomes just got worse and worse and it was starting to overwhelm her. It was just making her more and more nervous for the conversation to come.
She decided that she should focus her mind elsewhere so she decided to give her parents the update she had gotten. With a deep breath she closed her eyes to focus on her bond with both of her parents trying to keep how nervous she was from going through as well.. “Alright Mama, they said that they should be on their way back with Mark, I’m not sure how long it will take for them to get back but keep an eye out for them.”
Maddie had apparently failed at holding her nervousness back and of course her parents had been quick to notice. “Alright Maddie, but are you alright? I can feel your nerves weighing heavily on you.” Maddie could feel her concern and worry clearly. “ I’m alright Mama, I guess I’m just overthinking how this whole thing can go.” Just outside what she could ‘hear’ she felt her parents have a quick private conversation. Then she heard her Mama’s wingbeats grow closer before she dived out of the clouds and glided around the platform. After losing enough speed she spread her wings to catch the wind and landed onto the platform close to Maddie.
Maddie was a bit surprised, it had been Mothra’s idea to circle the base to make sure no one came or went without them allowing it. “Mama what are you doing?” Mothra moved closer and gently pulled Maddie in with one of her forelegs. “I thought you could use a hug, my love. And don’t worry, your Papa is watching the skies for me.” Maddie felt her eyes well up and quickly buried her head against Mothra and gave her the best hug she could.
Maddie was sitting with Mothra, talking with her when Godzilla interrupted them. “Pup, My queen, I see something approaching from the sky, one of the human flying machines.” Mothra gave her a small hug before she took off and flew to intercept. Maddie made her way over to Dr. Serizawa, who was speaking into a radio. “Is that the retrieval team?” Serizawa held up a hand as he held the radio up to his ear to hear it more clearly but after a few seconds he turned to her and nodded. Maddie quickly told Mothra this and after a minute the osprey came into view.
Maddie moved away from the other humans and watched the osprey land. She felt both Mothra and Godzilla pushing their comforting presences through the bonds and she was so thankful for it. Maddie had to make a conscious effort to not grab her tail in her hands as the door of the osprey slowly creaked open. Mark was quick to run out of the osprey as soon as possible, looking around frantically until his eyes landed on Maddie, who felt her entire body freeze once they did.
Mark all but started running over to Maddie but once he got close she couldn’t stop herself from taking a nervous step backwards which caused Mark to pause. “M-Maddie? Is that really you?” Mark’s voice falters slightly and he’s clearly holding back tears. Maddie takes a deep breath and nods. Mark immediately tries to step forward and hug her, tears now flowing down his face but Maddie takes another step back and shakes her head. This makes Mark stop instantly, his face morphing from overjoyed to confused.
Maddie has to blink back tears herself before she begins. “Before anything else happens I need you to answer two very important questions first.” Mark is still confused but nods. “Of course Maddie, ask me anything you need.” Maddie sighs and flares her wings out slightly so that they are clearly noticeable. “Did you know what I was?” Mark’s eyes widened slightly when he saw her flared wings but he recovers quickly as he hears her question. “What? No, no of course not, Emma never told me the truth until after you disappeared.”
Maddie felt relief but she still had one more question. “Then why did you leave after Andrew died?” Mark sighed and looked at his feet, feeling pure shame fill his heart . “I was in a bad place Mads, I didn’t want to deal with my grief so I tried to hide from it at the bottom of a bottle. I’m not sure if you remember but one day, I was drunk at our house, you had come to me to ask me such a simple question. ‘Daddy, can I have a glass of milk?’ and I yelled at you, telling you to ‘leave me alone’ and to ‘go bother your mother’.” Mark didn’t miss Maddie’s wince at the word ‘mother’ but didn’t stop to comment on it. “When I saw you start crying as you ran away, I realized I had to either man up and stop drinking, or get away before I hurt you.”
Mark had to pause as a few sobs ripped their way out of his throat. “I wish I had just quit drinking but I knew I would have to face my grief if I did and I was too much of a coward to do that so when Emma presented me with divorce papers and papers for me to sign my parental rights over until I was sober, I just signed both and left.” Mark looked up to see Maddie’s conflicted face. “I know that doesn’t fix anything and you have every right to still be angry with me for leaving but please let me be a part of your life again.”
Maddie had stood there in silence as she let him speak, feeling several emotions fighting for dominance in her mind but at the end she felt pure shock. “Y-you still want to be in my life? You don’t care that I’m not your daughter? You don’t care that I’m a Titan-Human experiment?” Mark wiped some tears from his face and stepped forward, placing his hands on her shoulders as he looked her in the eyes. “Oh Maddie, you always have been and always will be my daughter for as long as you want to be. Titan-Human experiment and all.” Maddie couldn’t stop her own tears from falling down her face but quickly wiped them away. There was one last bomb she had to drop before either of them could fully embrace the other.
“Well, there is one last thing you should know.” Maddie took a step back, causing Mark’s hands to fall from her shoulders. Mark was a little confused but simply nodded, waiting for her to continue. “Well, I’m not sure what all Emma told you and honestly I'm not really sure what she knew herself but I was born a Titan by the name of Amaryllis. My mother is Mothra.” as Maddie said her name Mothra dived down to hover behind Maddie’s right with her wings glowing in vibrant colors. “And my Father is Godzilla.” As Maddie said his name, Godzilla came bursting from the water with a powerful, booming roar, and stood behind Maddie’s left flashing his full intimidation display. Maddie looked back at them and smiled.
When she looked back to Mark his eyes were wide in shock, and she quickly noticed that his eyes were locked solely onto Godzilla. Maddie sighed, she was a little concerned that this would cause problems. As a kid she had overheard Mark blaming Godzilla for Andrew’s death. She stepped closer and gently grabbed Mark’s arm to get his attention. “I know you have issues with him but he is not to blame for Andrew’s death, he tried to end the fight as fast as he could” Mark still seemed conflicted so Maddie decided to play her trump card. Maddie folded her hands together under her chin, folded her upper ears back against her head and looked up at Mark doing her best puppy dog eyes. “I know it won’t be easy but will you at least give it a chance for me, pleeeeeease?”
Maddie could tell when Mark gave in as his shoulders sagged and he let out a long sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Alright, alright Maddie, I'll try, I can’t promise it’ll be smooth sailing but I will try.” Maddie let out a small cry of joy and finally jumped forward to hug Mark and started crying when he hugged her back. She didn’t know how everything was going to go but she was hopeful for the future now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maddie was relaxing on the beach of the island, enjoying the heat of the sun as it shined brightly above her. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and she decided to take full advantage of it and she was reminded that she wasn’t the only one as she heard Godzilla let out a huff as Mothra adjusted her position on his back.
Maddie smiled and closed her eyes to take a nap when she felt a buzzing from her front pocket. She sat up and pulled the SAT phone that Monarch had given her two months ago so that she could stay in contact with Mark while she stayed with her parents. She saw that the caller was indeed Mark and answered it. “Hey Ma- I mean, hey Dad, what’s going on?” Maddie was still getting used to calling him that again as they slowly began rebuilding their relationship. “Hey sweetie. I was wondering if you’d like to come with me to observe a wolf pack when you come to visit next month.
Maddie had been making monthly visits to Marks cabin for a couple of days at a time. “Yeah that sounds like a lot of fun, oh I hope we get to see some puppies!” She heard Mark chuckle at her excitement. “I’m sure we will, it’s a good sized pack.” They continued to chat for a few minutes before Maddie politely cut the conversation, the SAT phone, while it had a long battery life and wouldn’t die for a long time she didn’t have a way to recharge it on the island. “Alright I’ll talk to you later Dad, bye.” Mark was never happy to end the calls but knew it was inevitable. “Alright you stay safe Maddie, Love you, bye.” Maddie sighed happily as she put the phone back into her pocket after hanging up.
Maddie stood and moved closer to Godzilla so that she could lay against his side. She let out a long yawn and with a stretch she closed her eyes, feeling the loving presence of her Mama and Papa wrapping her up as she fell pleasantly into sleep, knowing that her life was looking bright.
