Work Text:
Stardust and Tails were chilling in his workshop. Stardust was spinning around in their chair, Tails tinkering on some new invention. He had his goggles over his eyes as he was soldering. He was super hyper-focused on his work. Meanwhile, Stardust was fairly bored, their thoughts troubling them.
After a little longer, They finally speak up.
“Tails… Do you think I have anything special about me…?”
He takes his goggles off at that, looking at them, even setting his tools down.
“Of course you’re special, Starry! You’re so kind, caring, and loyal to all of us.”
”No… I meant… power wise. You have your mutation, letting you fly,” they point to his two tails, “Knux has his fists, can bend wind to fly, and climb walls. Shadow is immortal and can chaos control... Then there’s your brother with his speed-… I don’t think I have anything special about me…”
His expression falters further, rolling his chair a little closer to them.
“Not having powers doesn’t mean you’re not special. In my eyes… You’re one of the most special people to me.” He places a hand on their shoulder. “You always are here to give me a second opinion, or give me help when I’m unsure of something.”
Stardust’s eyes lighten a little, the stars becoming slightly more visible, but still look like they’re covered by fog.
“I really mean that much to you…?”
Stardust places their head in his lap, gazing up at him. The front of their body was in his chair and lap, the back half still in theirs.
He strokes their head, particularly their ears, causing them to lean into the soft touch.
“Of course you do! You’re always willing to lend a paw. If you weren’t here, who else would brush the fur on my back so meticulously? Tell me to keep going when I hit a stop, or tell me to take a break when I’ve been working too long?”
Stardust mulls over his words for a moment, their head now leaning into his tummy.
“You make a valid point…”
“And maybe, Stardust, there’s a power inside of you that you’ve still yet to find.”
He leans a little over to the side so that Stardust could see his face. Stardust then moves their muzzle to boop their nose against his, both canines closing their eyes.
“I feel lucky to have you, Tails…”
“As do I, Starry…”
