Fuck, he didn’t put on Jace’s sunhat.
Charlie grumbled, feeling the start of a grumpy mood coming on. He was stressed from the hectic morning and now leaving later than planned. It was warmer than anticipated, the sun high in the sky, heat already radiating off the concrete below his feet. This was not how he wanted the day to start.
But that was just life with a toddler , his husband repeated to soothe Charlie’s nerves. Charlie shouldn’t feel this wound up this early on a Saturday, especially over a routine trip to the farmers’ market. Why must his brain always make mountains out of molehills?
As Charlie walked with a figurative storm cloud brewing overhead, a loud giggle pulled him out of his simmering ‘tude. Just up ahead was Nick and his mini-me, Papa carrying empty-bags in one hand with their three-year-old balanced on the opposite hip, their matching amber locks golden in the early summer sunlight. Nick was almost skipping along on the sidewalk, and whatever he was saying kept causing Jason’s laughter to ring out, bright and joyful in the breeze.
Charlie’s voice caught in his throat at the sight, and a rush of joy calmed his oncoming spiral. Seeing his two favorite boys always brought him back, injecting his heart with love. Even in these mundane-seeming moments, all Charlie saw was perfection. God, how’d he get so lucky? With a newfound lightness and a smile on his face, Charlie took a deep breath, letting the final tendrils of tension melt from his body, and rushed forward to catch up to his loves as they continued on their short journey.
