Deep Dive

Summary:

The first time Cynthia visited Undella Town was memorable for all involved.

Notes:

Haven't played X/Y so couldn't include the other character in the request, but I hope you enjoy Cynthia nerding out! Since she visits Caitlin and Shauntal in Undella Town during the spring, I thought it was an appropriate setting for the spring round of Seasons of Drabbles. ^^

(Title references the fact that you need to literally use Dive to access the Abyssal Ruins.)

Work Text:

It was Lenora who first brought the Abyssal Ruins to Cynthia's attention, perhaps knowing that the Sinnoh Champion would be hooked.

The sunken labyrinthine home to an ancient king. Who would turn that down? Cynthia just hoped she wouldn't get in Lenora's way.

Over the Xtransceiver, Lenora assured her that Unova had more ruins than it had archeologists to investigate them. Cynthia could have the site all to herself. And Caitlin would be happy to host a guest that spring.

In theory, that gave Cynthia plenty of time to pack her suitcase in a neat, considered manner. But she spent the days leading up to the trip poring over the fascinating scholarly literature about the king's legendary dragon. Only the night before did she cram her supplies—books, potions, clothing—into her luggage. She tossed in a couple swimsuits on top. No one could say she wasn't efficient.

The villa door opened. "Cynthia, would you like to join us for di-" Caitlin's soft voice died. "Oh dear."

Standing on the beach soaking wet, a silt-laden tile clutched in her arm, was Cynthia. She was absolutely beaming. Her Milotic swayed next to her, a similar brightness in its eyes.

"Ah, the adventurer's triumph!" Shauntal exclaimed from behind Caitlin. "It's just like a story I've been writing..."

"Take some time to catch your breath," Caitlin said, nearly giggling. "And then I'm sure you shall have such stories with which to regale us over dinner."

"Thank you—I will!"

The villa door closed. Cynthia gingerly set down the tile, Milotic chirping merrily as she began wringing saltwater from her hair. The sunshine allayed any chill on her skin.

Overhead, Wingulls soared as they had perhaps done since ancient times. The sight—universal on any shore, whether Sinnoh or Unova—made Cynthia's heart sing.
