Work Text:
A golden sunlight streamed into the room, casting a warm glow against sun-kissed skin, so loved by the sun and the comfort of her bed.
And draped in pure, carefully placed white sheets, a lovely surfer slept peacefully, basking in the serene light that filtered through the quiet morning provided by this new day.
The morning sun shined at the opportune moment, bringing the surfer to open her eyes. Mualani slowly got up from the mattress (an easier task than what it had been like–what? Nine months ago?), bringing her closed fists to rub the sleep from her eyes. Her sunset gaze drifted lazily around the room before settling on the other side of the bed, only to find—
Kinich wasn’t next to her.
She thought with half a mind to leave their bed when suddenly, she heard a ruckus coming from the open door of their room—the unmistakable patter of two little feet approaching from the hallway. Only a second later did a baby girl burst into the room, charging toward the bed with barely enough time for Mualani to glimpse the flowers choked in her chubby fasts.
“Mama…!”
Already scrambling onto the bed, breathless and bright-eyed, Mualani was met with piercing red eyes – her eyes – and diamond-shaped slits.
Mualani was surprised at how fast her daughter had gotten–but she knew she shouldn’t have been, considering who the father was.
The little girl was the spitting image of her father, with short raven hair threaded with curls that lifted at the ends, interspersed with strands of pearly white streaks, blending into a light blue. She also had a curly ahoge that sat on top of her head, bobbing with every tilt – much like a particular saurian hunter – making her want to giggle.
Like him, she, too, had his dark features along with his long lashes, fierce eyebrows, and striking pupils that shimmered against a sea of red instead of those yellow-green ones.
(Oh! And she also had the chubbiest cheeks in the world!)
“Mommie! I got ‘lowers for ou!”
Mualani finally noticed the flowers grasped in her little girl’s fist. The Meztli guide could recognize some of the flowers as Brilliant Chrysanthemums, by their tree-like stems and pink petals, while others were more common flowers.
Some were carefully picked (likely due to her father’s guidance), while others were drooping from their stems, victims of sloppy hands, but all were being offered to her like a gift.
“Oh, Kina!” Mualani exclaimed, her tone one of genuine surprise and affection. “Did you get these for me…?”
The surfer received delightful gurgling noises in response when the little girl suddenly jumped into her arms. Mualani gave a small laugh and giggle, pulling her daughter close, while accepting the bouquet of messy flowers in her other hand. She gave a small peck on her daughter’s forehead, causing the girl to giggle in excitement as she eagerly pushed herself further into the softness of her mother’s chest.
Moments like these were always filled with warm hugs and tickles, enough to stave the little girl’s antics and spark another round of giggles between mother and daughter.
… Moments like these were always filled with so much love and joy—for in Mualani’s arms, she had not one, but two gifts in her arms.
Now Mualani could only wonder: Kinich and Kina had probably gone out while she had been asleep. But why so early in the morning?
The surfer gave one last tickle to the little girl’s chubby stomach before asking:
“Alright, you cute little monster!” She joked playfully. “Where is your da-da…?”
This time, however, she received no response. Instead, the little babe continued to snuggle against her chest, as if seeking her very warmth. Or, trying to keep a secret.
Mualani heard quiet footsteps down the hallway, making her pause.
The door creaked open, slowly revealing a saurian hunter with dark raven hair, reptilian-like eyes, and a green head scarf wrapped around his forehead.
In his gloved hands, he held a beautifully arranged bouquet of flowers.
He looked up through thick lashes, a soft smile curling onto the corners of his lips that made her heart do a literal somersault. Beating a hundred times more than normal—beating for him.
“Kinich…!”
Before she knew it, Kina was already scrambling across the bed toward her approaching father, dropping to the floor before colliding into her father’s legs. Much like a brick wall, he didn’t budge; instead lowering his fond gaze to meet his spitting daughter.
“Kina, did you give your gift to your mother?” he asked softly.
The little girl eagerly nodded, hissing and blowing raspberries with great enthusiasm. It seemed that she, too, was deeply affected by the saurian hunter’s presence.
Mualani could feel her cheeks go crimson, her entire body shaking as she slowly approached him. She clasped her hands to her chest to soothe her rapid heartbeat.
“K-Kinich, what are these flowers for…?” she said, gazing at the arrangement of flowers in his hands.
His calm gaze met hers. “They are for you, Mualani.”
“Ah-!” Mualani exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise. At the same time, her lips trembled with great emotion. “How far did you travel today to get these, Kinich?”
“We didn’t go too far—just to Huitztli Hill, if that is what you are worried about,” he replied with ease. “But that’s not everything we got for you.”
Huh?!
Mualani noticed his closed fist and he noticed it too. Slowly, he opened it, revealing a gemstone ring. In a calm manner, he settled the bouquet of flowers on the bedside, right next to Kina’s bouquet, and took her hand, sliding the ring onto her pointer finger, placing it next to the obsidian ring on her ring finger.
“Kinich… T-thank you…!” Mualani blushed.
He interlaced his fingers with hers until their hands met, their fingers connecting at the point where his own obsidian ring brushed against hers. He was so, so close to her face–their noses nearly touching.
“No, Mualani,” he whispered, “Thank you.”
Then the world seemed to fall away as he slotted his lips over hers in a tender kiss, her oxygen becoming his. Their intertwined fingers pressed together in equal force, the pressure making Mualani feel like she was melting away.
Nothing could capture what Kinich felt in that moment–on this special day.
Kinich was forever grateful for Mualani.
For giving him love.
For giving birth to Kina.
For giving him a family.
They both pulled away from the kiss, equally pleased, only to find a little girl knocking against their legs.
Kinich and Mualani both looked down, meeting a pair of big red eyes and diamond-shaped pupils.
“Ma… da…! I want one ‘oo~~!” Kina pouted, her cherubic cheeks puffing adorably.
“Oh~ Little Kina wants a kiss! Should we give her one~?” Mualani giggled, gazing at the raven-haired man in front of her.
Kinich merely smiled before loosening his grip. In one smooth motion, he leaned down and lifted the little babe into his arms. Once the girl was slotted safely against his chest, Mualani leaned in, and Kinich followed suit. Sandwiched from both sides, Kina was kissed with equal amounts of force from her mother and father, making her squeal in joy.
The surfer giggled, “Alright! Shall I make breakfast for you two since you have been sooooo kind?”
“We made break feast! Made~!” The little girl chirped, eliciting an amused look from her father.
Kinich brought a hand to his lips, clearing his throat. “What Kina is saying is that ‘We already made breakfast for you,’ Mualani.”
“R-really?! Ohhh~ I am so grateful for you two~!” she beamed.
And Mualani will be forever grateful…
Grateful that Kinich’s mother… had given birth to Kinich…
Happy Mother’s Day! 💐
