"Remus, you're taking too long! We need to go if we want to make it to the amusement park on time." Logan called out, knocking repeatedly on Remus's door.
"Give me a minute! Do you want me to wear pants or not? I mean, I can open the door now, but I don't think you want to see that." Remus responded with a slight huff, clearly exasperated.
"I would prefer to see you fully clothed, yes, but I told you we were leaving at 8am. It is 7:57. You should be ready." Logan crossed his arms as he leaned his back against Remus's door, waiting impatiently for it to open.
"Calm your tits, clock watcher. We have plenty of- Whoa!" Remus opened the door and panicked when he saw Logan fall back towards him.
Logan looked up at Remus's eyes and flushed, feeling himself be held by strong arms.
"Looks like I caught you." Remus said awkwardly, still holding onto Logan.
Logan straightened quickly and got back onto his feet, clearing his throat. He still looked quite pink.
"I apologize. Are you, ahem, ready to leave?" Logan articulated carefully.
"You're fine, Punctual Pete. Let's get out to the car before you have an aneursym. How long is the drive?" Remus asked as he bent over to tie a stray shoelace. Logan looked away.
"The drive is about an hour and I would prefer to take my car." Logan pushed his glasses up his nose with one hand before reaching over to push his hair out of his eyes.
Logan and Remus had been best friends since their sophomore year of college, meeting at a party Logan's former roommate was hosting. Logan had been in a literal corner looking miserable and Remus, fairly bored of all the other people there, had struck up a conversation.
The two had been close ever since, recently moving in together after having both graduated college.
The two made their way out to Logan's car, a two year old SUV. Remus's car, a 15 year old rust bucket he'd had since freshman year of high school, was parked next to it.
"Can I drive?" Remus asked with a grin. Remus was known to be a decently safe driver despite having his moments of recklessness, so despite a bit of fear, Logan agreed.
"As long as you don't dent my car." He said as he unlocked it, sitting down on the passenger's side.
The entire car was almost immaculate, usually kept fully detailed and washed, except for the passenger's side.
The passengers side was usually Remus's and he'd left a few papers and fidget toys on the floorboard. Normally, Logan would be very annoyed by the mess, but seeing as the source was Remus and it wasn't trash, it made him happy to see proof of Remus's presence in his life.
Remus sat down on the drivers side and adjusted the seat and mirrors. Logan watched him carefully.
Recently, Logan had found himself staring at Remus for no reason. He'd been noticing things since they moved in together.
He noticed the light dusting of freckles across Remus's nose and cheeks and the slight upward curve of his lips when his face wasn't making any particular expression. He noticed how Remus's thick eyebrows would knit together when he thought hard about something and he noticed when Remus would laugh quietly to himself about something that popped into his head.
"Are you gonna buckle so we can get going or you gonna keep being zoned out, space cadet?" Remus interrupted his train of thought by speaking up.
"Sorry." He buckled up and the two were off before he knew it. Remus was driving fine so far, maintaining speed and slowing down for curves, so Logan was relaxed.
Logan looked down at the radio and read the name of the song off of the touchscreen display. It was one he didn't know well.
"So what'll it take for you to see things the way that I do?
Just for a minute so I can be brutally honest with you about everything I'm still so afraid of." The singer sounded a bit strange. It was a genre he didn't know well at all, but it was enjoyable so far. There was a woman singing along and her voice was gentle.
"What's this?" He asked Remus with a smile.
"Seems out of character, don't it? Should be uh, Hollywood Undead or something. Roman introduced me to it, it's called Midwest emo. The vocals remind me of punk in the older stuff, but this is revival, so it's more…indie? I don't know the genre well enough to speak on it, but some of it ended up in my playlist." Remus explained, stopping at a red light and tapping his fingers against the wheel.
They'd talked through a verse or two and when Logan heard the lyrics again, it reminded him of something he'd felt before.
"When it's cold and it's dark outside, I've never slept that well in my whole life
And it's nice to not have to try sometimes, 'cause no one's ever made me feel the way that you do.
No one's ever made me feel as loved as you do. And nobody else knows me the way that you do."
When he was around Remus, he didn't have to try to be a professional. He could be himself and Remus still liked him. Remus had always been kind to him, even when he was hiding in the corner at a party.
The song reminded him of a sleepover the two'd had in college. When Logan's roommate eventually kicked him out of the dorm for another party, he found himself at Remus's dorm.
That night, he slept better than he had in years. For some unknown reason, sleeping near Remus made him feel…something. He wasn't sure exactly what but it was like relaxation, something serene, watching Remus's chest slowly rise and fall as Logan was lulled to sleep by gentle breaths and the hum of the AC.
He was on a blanket on the floor next to Remus's bed and slept like he was on the highest quality mattress ever.
"Nobody's ever been this good to me, not even myself." The last lyric rang out and he looked over at Remus.
He felt something change in his chest as he realized he was in love. It wasn't some huge realization or 'Oh no' moment, it was just there. It was a gentle feeling of loving and being loved and it filled his whole being with a warm fuzziness he wished he hated.
The two lightly chatted as the drive continued with Logan trying to figure out what to do about his new realization. As Remus told a filthy story from his youth, Logan let his mind wander.
He was unsure if he should say something or not. On one hand, he'd never had a relationship like his and Remus's. The two were nearly inseparable, absolute best friends. He would not ruin this with something as silly as feelings.
On the other hand, though, he longed to hold Remus's hand. He wanted to ruffle his hair and hold him close, to talk for hours and sleep on the phone. He wanted to be near Remus and he wasn't sure how he'd continue acting normal around Remus while feeling this way.
The song switched to something more typical for Remus and Logan tried not to think about it.
Before he knew it, though, the two had arrived at the amusement park.
"Logan? You okay? You've been off this whole drive, do you not wanna go to the amusement park today? We can go home, I'm fine with missing out." Remus asked carefully once they'd park, looking into Logan's eyes with concern.
"Can I kiss you?" Logan blurted out without thinking.
"Pause. Rewind. What?" Remus flushed bright red, confused.
"I would like to kiss you. May I kiss you?" Logan asked again, willing his voice to be even and not nervous.
"Where'd that come from?" Remus asked with a laugh, snaggletooth canine peeking over his bottom lip.
Logan sighed and got ready to explain.
"I have been distracted because I realized that I like you. I have liked you, ahem, romantically for quite some time, I was just unsure what the feelings were. So, I'll repeat the question. May I kiss you?" Logan asked again, heart pounding in panic. He was terrified to ruin their friendship.
Remus paused for a moment and giggled before putting a hand on Logan's cheek, leaning over and carefully kissing his lips.
It was all Logan had ever wanted and more.
"You wanna make this trip a date, Poindexter?" Remus asked with a smile.
Logan returned a grin and blushed a bit when Remus winked.
"I would enjoy that immensely." He replied as he opened the car door, standing up.
"Finally here! I'm getting on the tallest coaster they have! Come on!" Remus quickly got out of the car and locked it, reaching for Logan's hand.
The two held hands as Remus pulled Logan towards the entrance. Logan blushed a bit but followed with enthusiasm, excited for what the future held.
Fin.
