Chapter Text

The streets of the faerie kingdom were bustling with people on this rather busy day. Everywhere you would look you could see countless faerie cookies doing their daily tasks with grace. Because it was a Thursday all the silver tree knights were out on duty, their silver armour was glistering in the light of the moon.

For the faeries, this was a normal and comforting sight to see, but for two cookies it felt like they were walking around with a dagger to their throats, ready to be killed the second they made a wrong move.

Neither of the cookies felt safe at the moment; they wondered why they had chosen this day for their arrival. But, no time to complain about it, they were here for one reason: to gather information and spread lies.
While both of them had decided that it would be better to get used to the kingdom first and not immediately start spreading lies, it became clear that it was too busy to calmly settle.

“Oh, it is so busy here” the smaller cookie said as she kept her voice low.

The taller cookie nodded but he didn’t look at her, his gaze was focused on the silver tree knights that had been eying them ever since they set foot in the kingdom.
They had come here in order of their master. Usually, he wouldn’t go on missions but right now he was forced to go.

The smaller cookie her shoulders were slumped as she tried to keep herself small. Her usual energetic behaviour was nowhere to be found.
The taller cookie finally lowered his gaze to look at her.
The disguise was working well, he could barely recognise her. Right now she was apple faerie cookie and not candy apple cookie.
He himself also had a disguise but he felt like it was much more out of place than the one of his companion. While she actually looked like a faerie cookie he could easily be seen as an outsider.

Candy Apple Cookie sighed as she took another step. She had already been here before, why had the older cookie insisted on taking a look around the kingdom first? Yes, it had been a while since she was last in this magical kingdom full of faeries but nothing had changed!

“Black sapphire cookie, can we take a break, my feet hurt” candy apple cookie said to her companion who once again turned his head to look at her.

“Don’t say my name out loud” he hissed at the cookie. Candy Apple Cookie already had a name for her disguise but he hadn’t chosen one so far. Not that his disguise was any good anyway, any cookie who took their time to take a good look at him would notice the lack of wings.

Candy apple cookie rolled her eyes at black sapphire cookie his complaint. She didn’t understand why he was being so careful, after all she knew that the faerie cookies mostly minded their own business. The secret folk wasn’t too keen on knowing other cookies their personal life or their conversations.

“But, yes, we can take a break once we find a suitable place to sit.” Black sapphire cookie said as he slowed down his pace to accommodate the steps of his younger companion.
Candy Apple Cookie let out a sigh of relief, her feet were killing her after all the walking they had done. She knew that it was because of the disguise it’s shoes, they were shoes of pure metal but they weren’t exactly comfortable.

As the duo continued to talk over the busy marketplace candy apple cookie her mind started wandering to her own private island inside of her head. She was looking at the ground and everything around her seemed to fade away. But she kept walking, following her older companion as he knew where they had to go.

She was getting quite annoyed with the fact that they had made zero progress in their mission so far. Normally they would have spread at least one rumour in the first hour of being in a new kingdom.

The smaller cookie kicked a small pebble that was lying on the ground and she watched as it hit a faerie cookie right on his wings.
The faerie Cooke had hissed in pain for a few seconds before looking around trying to find the cookie who had done it, but luckily for Candy Apple Cookie the marketplace was too busy so he gave up and continued his walk.

Black sapphire cookie was watching it all happen, the cookie had a grayish dough colour and eyes as blue as the sea. He also looked like someone not to mess with. He looked at Candy Apple Cookie who was avoiding his gaze.

“You really have to be more careful, you’re going to get us caught if you keep acting like this,” black sapphire cookie said in a stern tone, candy apple cookie kept avoiding his gaze and focused her gaze on a nearby stall filled with flowers and herbs.

The purple doughed cookie looked in front of him again and the pinkish doughed cookie let out a breath she didn’t realise she had been holding this entire time.

They continued to walk but their pace became significantly slower over time, their feet were starting to hurt, and every step they took felt like they were dragging boulders with them.
Black sapphire cookie never had a great stamina so he had to slow down his pace first, candy apple cookie only followed because she didn’t want to lose him in the busy crowd.

He kept looking around in the hopes of finding a place to rest, after all they had been walking for hours with no further steps taken in their plan. Taking a break wouldn’t hurt. He then saw an empty bench on top of a hill, he grabbed candy apple cookie by her hand and started dragging her with him, bumping into quite a few faerie cookies in the process.

“What are you doing!” Candy apple cookie said as she tried to get her stance back onto the ground but to no avail, she wasn’t able to do it.

“Dragging you to a bench obviously” black sapphire cookie said as he let go of her and started climbing the hill.
Candy Apple Cookie rolled her eyes and followed right behind him. The hill was rather steep but somehow it was still climbable.

The smaller cookie easily bypassed her companion and arrived at the top first, immediately taking place on the silver bench. Black sapphire cookie followed suit and let out a sigh of relief when he sat down. His feet were killing him, not having wings sucked, he now understood how candy apple cookie felt in her early years at the spire.

They both sat next to each other without saying a single word, the silence was unusual but they welcomed it with open arms.
Both of them were observing the faerie cookies flying and walking around. Candy Apple Cookie was the one who was the most observant, not in a good way though, she made snarky comments about the way they moved and looked.

Black sapphire cookie on the other hand was observing their behavior and taking mental notes, this was his first time going on this big of a mission. Sure, he had done small missions before but that was only to collect rumors and not spread them, that was candy apple cookie her part of the job. He had to admit that he did not dislike this. He may be tired and his feet were protesting against him but he was away from the spire and he would be for quite a while.

Candy apple cookie kept rambling on about how badly the faerie cookies were dressed and how ridiculous they talked. Black sapphire cookie wasn’t really listening, he was just nodding along hoping that his companion wouldn’t notice it.

After a while, he heard her stomach growl. He didn’t even have to say anything about it and the younger cookie had already jumped back on her feet.

“I'm going to look for something to eat, you stay here!” She said in a warning tone, the taller cookie just nodded and rolled his eyes at her, of course he wouldn’t just walk away, he had no idea what this kingdom was exactly.

Candy Apple Cookie walked back to the path and before he knew it she disappeared into the busy crowd of faeries.

“Finally some peace and quiet” black sapphire cookie mumbled to himself, he leaned backwards and put his arms behind his neck to support it. He wasn’t worried about candy apple cookie, she had been here before and she was used to busy places, she could handle a marketplace full of cookies she deemed as ridiculous.

He almost started enjoying the silence a little too much before he saw a faerie cookie fly to the bench, great, that was just his luck.
The faerie cookie seemed rather familiar to him, he couldn’t place why, after all, he had only been here for a few hours.

“Do you mind if I sit here?” The faerie cookie asked, his voice was soft yet commanding, he had never heard something like it before.
Black sapphire cookie his mind told him to scream and say no but that would make him suspicious, after all he had observed that the faeries were a very tight-knit community.

“Uhh no, go ahead” black sapphire cookie said with uncertainty, he had no idea what to say or do. He sat up straight again and lowered his arms back to his side. Lucky for him the faerie cookie hadn’t noticed the uncertainty in his voice or the way his eyes avoided him.

They sat in silence but this silence wasn’t comfortable at all, it was tense and felt more like they were screaming at each other. Only after a few minutes black sapphire cookie realized that this was the faerie that got hit by the pebble candy apple cookie had kicked. This only made him more uncomfortable. He had no idea what to do. Should he make small talk? Or should he just be quiet?

Black sapphire cookie didn’t say anything until he heard the sound of soft sniffles next to him. Was that cookie really crying?
He started to fidget with the bracelet he was wearing before he decided it was time to speak up.

“Are you alright?” He asked, the faerie cookie quickly wiped away his tears before looking up, nodding to him with an obviously forced smile.

“Yes, I’m fine, it’s just that the yeast spores are really bad this time around.” He said. Black sapphire cookie just stared at him in confusion but he didn’t reply to it.
Where was Candy Apple Cookie when he needed her? She knew how to talk with faeries and not sound like an outsider right away. Sure he himself had a smooth voice and knew his way around cookies but he was no expert in cultures and conversation manners.

After a few more minutes of the uncomfortable silence black sapphire cookie spoke up once again.
“So.... may I have the pleasure of knowing your name?” He said, he turned to look at the faerie cookie and he gave him a charming smile.

“It’s Silverbell cookie, loyal silver tree knight of the faerie kingdom” the faerie said.
Black sapphire cookie felt the annoyance creeping into his dough, he had simply asked for his name, not his occupation. But it was nice to know that he couldn’t mess with this cookie.
He was too deeply lost in thought to say something else. He only snapped out of it when he heard the faerie, whose name turned out to be Silverbell, asked him a question.

“And your name is?” He asked. Black sapphire cookie his eyes widened slightly before they returned to their original state, he hadn’t thought about this, he surely couldn’t tell him his real name, he would know that he was a henchman of deceit himself, but he also hadn’t thought about a name for his faerie disguise.

He frantically looked around which gave him a weird look from Silverbell cookie.
He then spotted a stall selling fresh grapes.
“It’s purple grape cookie” He said with fake confidence, secretly hoping the other cookie would just take it and luckily he did.
Black sapphire cookie thought that he was done with the questions but of course, he wasn’t.

“Are you waiting on someone?” Silverbell cookie asked. Black sapphire cookie could feel himself getting more annoyed with him, he couldn’t show that of course, especially now that he knew that he was talking to a silver tree knight.

“Uhh, yes I’m waiting on my.... my.... sister.” Black sapphire cookie said with a nervous smile on his face, it was a poorly formed lie with way too much hesitation. He saw that the cookie next to him raised one of his eyebrows in suspicion, but he quickly dropped it. The greyish doughed cookie put his bow to his side and looked up at the dark sky filled with stars.

“I’m on my lunch break, but I never really eat lunch, the food here doesn’t exactly fit my diet” Silverbell cookie said.
Black sapphire cookie felt himself getting more and more annoyed with him, why was he telling him all this personal information he had no business knowing, were all faerie cookies this open? Cause if they were candy apple cookie had some explaining to do.

Candy apple cookie was walking on the busy market looking for something that looked edible enough to her. She hadn’t gotten lucky yet, all the food she had seen looked like it would give her food poisoning from just smelling it. She was still quite hungry and the fact that she was in enemy territory wasn’t helping it. Usually, she would know her way around but it felt like in the time she was gone the faeries had decided to reconstruct the entire place.

Nevertheless, she continued to look for food. She passed by a small open field where young faerie cookies were flying around. Candy apple cookie scoffed, why were they flying if they had a perfectly good ground to walk on? Maybe she was jealous, after all, her wings weren’t real, they were purely there for her own confidence and to look more like her older brother.

“This is stupid” she mumbled as she continued her search for something to eat. The market was still very crowded despite it getting late, she sighed, and was thinking about giving up or grabbing something that looked like food poisoning in a bowl.

Black sapphire cookie could feel his hands starting to sweat due to his nervousness. The faerie cookie still hadn’t left him and worst of all, he was trying to keep the conversation going. The purple doughed cookie his mind started flooding with unpleasant thoughts. What if this faerie had found out that he was an intruder? Was his disguise really that bad? Or what this faerie just used to spot intruders due to the fact that he is a silvertree knight?

Black sapphire cookie responded in short, one-word answers only, even though it made no sense. Silverbell cookie caught onto that and started asking more specific questions that couldn’t be answered in a single word. He got rather annoyed by it, why was this faerie attempting to get information out of him? That was his job!
He crossed his arms over each other and turned his head to look at the faerie cookie.

He let out a hitched breath as he really took in the faerie cookie that had been talking to him for the past hour. He was absolutely gorgeous, he had this grayish skin but the most beautiful blue eyes. Black sapphire cookie quickly turned away once more and silverbell cookie tilted his head in confusion.

“Are you alright?” He asked as he leaned closer to him. Black sapphire cookie quickly leaned away from him. The faerie got a slight hurt look on his face and he quickly moved away.

“I should get going” he mumbled before standing up and flying away.
Black sapphire cookie let out a shaky breath and his body visibly started to relax again. Where was Candy Apple Cookie when he needed her? As a matter of fact, where was candy apple cookie? She still hadn’t returned. He couldn’t go and look for her, he had to wait here in case she returned. The worry seeped into his dough and he began to bounce his leg up and down. He couldn’t keep waiting on her, he would go and find her.
He stood up and started walking towards the market.

Candy Apple Cookie had given up looking for anything to eat, she was trying to find the way back but she couldn’t remember which way she came from. She was panicking slightly, these faeries had changed the layout of the market in the time she was gone and now she couldn’t find the way back to the bench.

“What am I going to do?…” she mumbled as she looked around, she didn’t want to ask some faerie for directions. She was getting mad at herself for not remembering the round or walking in a straight line. She walked to a more secluded area of the market, away from most of the faerie cookies.

Just as she walked past some bushes she suddenly felt two hands on her, she wanted to let out a scream but one of the hands was covering her mouth, she started kicking and trying to get away, that was until she noticed the black gloves on the hands. She immediately got an annoyed expression on her face and stopped kicking.

“Calm down brat.” Black sapphire cookie said through gritted teeth. He pulled her into the bush and he then dropped her next to him.
He looked annoyed but Candy Apple Cookie turned around.

“You could have just slapped me!” Candy apple cookie said and black sapphire cookie shushed her.

“Keep it down! We have to start our mission immediately, I have a feeling the silver tree knights, well one of them, is onto us.” Black sapphire cookie said, candy apple cookie her eyes widened. She sat up straight and leaned on her arms.

“Then.. we have to start early” Candy Apple Cookie said, she couldn’t believe it, how had they been caught so soon? Were they even caught or was black sapphire cookie overthinking once again?
“And how do you know that?” She said and black sapphire cookie looked away before taking a deep breath.

“Some silver tree knight talked to me for like an hour when you were gone, I think I messed it up.” Black sapphire cookie said and the smaller cookie covered her mouth to muffle a laugh.

“Finally working on your social skills?” Candy apple cookie said and black sapphire cookie slapped her. Candy apple cookie hit him back in response.

“I didn’t find any food and now the marketplace is closed,” Candy Apple Cookie said. Black sapphire cookie his eyes widened before he put a hand on her shoulder.

“It’ll be fine, we’ll find food tomorrow. Let's just focus on getting our mission done.” the taller cookie said and Candy Apple cookie nodded.
Both of them stood up and dusted down their clothes.

He had no idea if it would be fine, it probably wouldn’t be fine but he didn’t want to make Candy Apple Cookie worry more.

“I miss shadow milk cookie” candy apple cookie mumbled as she hugged herself. Black sapphire frowned slightly, he didn’t like it that she was bringing up their master but he understood that she was.

“If we’re lucky we’ll be back next week” black sapphire cookie nodded and candy apple cookie nodded sadly. It was too long for her, she loved their master and not seeing him every day hurt her.

“He gave us an important mission, we'd better not mess this up, only the witches know what will happen to us if we mess this up” he said and Candy Apple Cookie nodded, she hated this.

“Let’s find a place to sleep, I’m exhausted” he said and she nodded once again. Then she got an idea.

“What if we spread rumors over the night?” The pinkish doughed cookie suggested. Black sapphire cookie his eyes lit up at the suggestion.

“Well it seems that you’re finally using that one brain cell of yours” he said and candy apple cookie poured at the comment.

It would be a long night, but they were together so it would be fun. They just needed a plan and he could make it.

This would be an amusing job to do and he couldn’t wait for it to start.

Notes:

First rewrite! I can’t believe how big this fic had gotten over the past 10 months! I never expected it to become this big, you readers are my motivation to not abandon it! Updates will be happening at least once a month, not once a week anymore it’s become to much for me to balance with school and my other hobbies and for the rewrites? I’ll write those when I’m in between chapters. I don’t know how I’m already writing chapter 39 of this fan fiction at this point, but I can’t thank you all enough for the support I’ve gotten despite my terrible writing. Especially to the returning readers who wait for a chapter every month and for the new ones who push through the crappy writing, thank you.
