Work Text:
2015
Kazuto is happily playing with his action figures, his uninterested brother sits beside him mindlessly scrolling on his phone he had gotten just a week ago. Kazuto threw a mini tantrum at that— but alas his parents assured him he'd get a phone once he was old enough and that somehow left him content.
“Boys!” The two whipped their head to the front door from their place in the living room, their parents and oldest sibling, their sister, has been outside for awhile now. “Come here for a second.”
When Kazuto and his brother make their way there, he finally finds out what the commotion was, a new family were moving in next to them.
Kazuto spots him from afar, despite standing behind his mother’s ankle length skirt, a boy around his age staring back at him and only him. He was a naturally shy kid who hadn't come out his shell yet.
Just in time, his mother spoke up, “Here's my son Kazuto,” His mother singsonged, darn it mother! I was going to stay invisible behind you, “He's a year younger than yours~ Oh how adorable.”
The two women laughed and Kazuto can see the boy walk closer, he panickedly turned to his two older siblings just to find out they're already acquainting themselves with a girl around their age, presumably the other boy’s older sister.
“Go ahead Kan-chan.” The boy’s mother calls him by the cute nickname, you would think it was a daughter.
Moments after, the boy had already made his way in front of Kazuto and his mother— while still cowering behind her.
“Hi,” The boy says calmly, “I’m Kaname.” He flashes a smile and extends his hand out.
Kazuto shyly grabs it and shakes it. “I’m Kazuto…”
His mother betrays him in the moment as she walks away, eager to catch up on some unfinished stories with Kaname’s mother as she ushers the two of them away, telling them to play near the park.
“Do you want to ride the swing?” Kaname starts, filling the awkward air. The boy seemed to be a year older than him but they were similar in height.
“Yes..” Kazuto responded in a small voice, still unfamiliar by the other’s presence.
“Let's go~ I'll push you, Kazuto.” Kaname leads them.
Long story short, Kazuto had a great time and definitely much more fun than he’d have expected. Kaname is a bit odd, Kazuto finds him fun to be with but the boy possessed some kind of trait making him feel more mature than Kazuto himself. Maybe that was just the case. Kaname would entertain all his requests but remain calm and did not ask for anything in return. It felt as if Kazuto was getting babysat but he couldn't say anything in protest.
Everything goes smoothly until Kazuto trips over himself and lands on the pavement hands first as he's running ahead of Kaname. He stares in shock, but gets up in an instant and smiles in triumph realising he avoided scraping his knee.
“Are you okay?!” Kaname rushes over and examines him.
“I'm fine I managed to avo-”
“Your palm is bleeding,” The older cuts him off as he held his hand up. “Come with me.”
Kazuto is dragged by the wrist until they reach the Yoshizawa residence. Was he even allowed in? There was no one at home, the family must be in his home instead; still getting to know each other.
“Stay here” Kaname sat him in the dining room and rushed back with antiseptic and a bandaid.
“It's okay…” Kazuto says in protest but Kaname’s grip on his hand was strong and firm— it wasn't something he wanted to fight.
In just a bit, the scratch on his hand had been all cleaned up and taken care of. This was what Kazuto meant when he thought Kaname was way too mature for his age. Kazuto would've cried.
“Thank you.” Kazuto says while staring at the ground, now feeling guilty he put Kaname through all that, but the boy just laughs and stands up.
“Don't feel bad, come on, let's go to your house.”
Kazuto looks up and sees him smiling, a hand reached out for Kazuto to hold onto.
Kazuto holds onto it tightly.
2018
Kazuto wouldn't say he and Kaname are best friends, or that close— they just simply live close and run into each other on their way to middle school. Running into each other at the end of the day was a seldom thing due to the fact both of them had different extracurriculars, Kazuto joined soccer and Kaname joined their dance club. Kazuto was under the impression Kaname would've joined him in soccer, like every other pre-teen boy, but his passion for dancing and ballet was still stronger.
They really never run into each other, courtesy of Kazuto trying to avoid that as well. He didn't hate Kaname, not at all, it just felt weird to him because he thinks they should've been way closer by now. So he just feels like Some Guy who knows Kazuto a little too much.
Until today.
Kazuto was finally able to make his way home after soccer practice, the fourth one at that. Regret started finally kicking in when he trudged home, legs one step away from a terrible cramp from the overexertion. Heck, even his teacher told him to sit the club activity out but Kazuto was stubborn and wanted to show he was strong— it was only fair he reaped what he sowed.
It was getting dark soon but Kazuto was walking begrudgingly slow against his own will, he's supposed to make it home before it becomes dark because the house would be empty since his parents went to see his grandparents and his older siblings wouldn't pass this chance to be able to stay over at their friends’ houses; so he had to reach home and turn the lights on before it became too dark (he is deathly afraid of the dark).
His legs betray him when he slowly feels them giving out as he crouched down, one arm holding his body up and the other holding his head up from completely falling onto the pavement. Kazuto must've been extremely exhausted because he even heard someone yelling for him from afar. Except the sound kept getting louder.
“Kazuto!”
Quick footsteps rush behind him— finally stopping once they were right behind him. With all his strength he had left, Kazuto looks up, it was hard to see from the sun setting and blinding him but once the figure moved he saw who the boy was. Kaname.
“Are you okay?” Kaname asked, “Why did you push yourself so hard? Imagine if you just collapsed here.” The boy immediately snatched his school bag from
him to sling it over his body instead, leaving him empty-handed.
“Get on my back, I'll carry you.”
Kazuto knows he's one moment away from passing out because he doesn't even fight Kaname and voluntarily wraps his arms around Kaname’s head to steady himself getting piggybacked.
The walk home was quiet, Kaname sensed Kazuto was too tired to even hold a conversation as well so he just starts exclaiming at random things on the road, the type where Kazuto knows he doesn't except a response from, but he still hums back— because it's Kaname.
They finally reach home once it's dark since Kaname was walking back slowly, Kazuto sighs when he sees the pitch black home.
“Is there no one?” Kaname asks.
“Yeah my parents went to see my grandparents, my sister and brother are probably out with their friends.”
He feels Kaname nod as he fishes out the house keys from Kazuto’s pocket “How do you know where I put my keys?”
“I know enough.” He promptly says. Kazuto shuts his mouth.
Kaname walks inside with Kazuto as he turns all the lights on one by one, all while not putting the younger down, Since when was he even this strong?. Well Kaname was older, and going to highschool in just a few months, maybe it made sense they'd have that much of a difference in strength.
He makes it to Kazuto’s room and finally lays the boy down on the bed.
“Thank you… sorry…” Kazuto says weakly.
“Why are you sorry?”
“You carried me when i'm all stinky and sweaty from practice.”
Kaname let's out his signature low laugh. “That’s not a problem.”
Kazuto lays there staring at Kaname, unable to read his emotions or what the older meant, surely he would’ve been a bit disgusted? He lays on his back, refusing to meet Kaname’s eyes from the warm feeling blooming in his chest. “How did you even see me anyways? Don’t you go back earlier.. Did you follow me?”
Hearing that, Kaname goes silent and shoots Kazuto a stare.
“What..?”
“Yes.”
He says it without missing a beat, not alarmed or nervous at all as if it was a normal response.
“You’ve been pushing yourself too hard this week.” He adds.
Kazuto doesn’t know if his mouth is agape now or not but at this point it should be. Kaname cared about him this much? He’s been following Kazuto back after practice from afar?
Seeing Kazuto remain silent, Kaname continues “It’s not that I was stalking you or anything, we just live right next to each other so it was the same way back home anyways.”
Right. Yeah. He wasn’t going out of his way just for Kazuto. He needs to take a breather instead of jumping to conclusions.
“Thank..you..” He says in a low voice.
“I’ll go get you some water, stay here.”
The older leaves and Kazuto almost wants to go crazy from the silence and presence of no one again, it doesn’t last long when Kaname comes back with the glass of water.
He rests an arm on Kazuto’s back and sits him up then brings the glass to Kazuto’s mouth. “Here.” Kazuto’s arms go up to hold it himself, fingers brushing with the hand that was holding him it up for him while replacing it with his hand.
Kazuto promptly chugs the entire thing down, only now realising how close he was to a heatstroke and how dehydrated he’d been the entire day. The older takes the glass from his hands and sets it on the nightstand.
“You should rest now.” Kaname says.
“I need to shower.”
“You can do it later, it’s a Saturday tomorrow.” The older says sternly. “What if you pass out in the shower? I can’t go in there.”
“Kaname, I’ll be fine.”
The other looks at him with a blank expression.
“...I guess I can take a nap first.” Kazuto gives in not even a minute later.
“Better.” Kaname smiles at the suggestion. “I’ll leave when you fall asleep.”
“Thank you, again.” Kazuto repeats the one thing that keeps ringing in his head.
Kaname continues telling him it’s nothing and he should close his eyes now to rest. Kazuto listens to him and lays back down, not before apologising again before he finally drifts off to sleep. God knows how long he was asleep for, but if Kazuto was sad to see Kaname gone when he was awake, no one has to know that.
2021
Kaname has grown up, like a lot, it actually hurts Kazuto’s neck to talk to him but of course, after he complains once Kaname has made sure he is sitting or is at least bending down when talking to Kazuto. At this point, the two are so close that everyone in highschool knows if you want to find Kaname he’s most likely where you’ll find Kazuto and vice-versa.
Still, they do have their own friends, due to the fact they’re in different grades and clubs. Kazuto sticks with his soccer club and Kaname with his dance club, but they still make it work. Kazuto himself has found friends he loves, Ryota and Kousaku. The three met in the first year of highschool after becoming classmates. Kazuto was shy because unlike their middle school filled with kids that were just living around the same area as him, this highschool was closer to the city and filled with so many new people with new personalities he’d never encountered before— he almost regrets listening to Kaname recommending this highschool to his parents.
One faithful morning in PE class brings the three boys together, Kazuto, Ryota and Kousaku are assigned to the same team for dodgeball and when a ball comes flying to Kousaku, he manages to topple over both Kazuto and Ryota in the process of trying to avoid it. The three fall to the ground with scrapped knees or elbows and are sent to the nurses office. Kousaku, feeling guilty as ever, profusely apologised to the two boys who couldn’t hide their smiles at how funny the situation felt.
From then on, the three of them were like peas in a pod and eventually were introduced to Kaname as well, due to how much he’d hover around Kazuto.
“Are you two like… friends?” Kousaku asks him one day during lunch break in the cafeteria.
Kaname had just dropped by their table with a small milk carton for Kazuto, something he’d occasionally do with the treats constantly changing.
“What else would we be?” He says out of confusion.
“Come on, don’t tell me you don’t feel anything at all.” Ryota chimes in. “I talk to Kaname a lot too he’s cool but he literally looks like he’d grab a star from the sky just for you when I even mention you just once.”
“I think both of you are just overreacting, he’s known me since I was a child, he probably thinks I’m still a kid he needs to babysit.”
The two look completely unimpressed at the excuse and explanation, shooting him a confused stare, but they decide to drop the topic shortly after. Kazuto thought it was better that they did, because the longer the discussion went the more he didn’t know how he’d respond with the once again blooming warmth in his chest at the slightest mention on Kaname.
It’s been a recurring problem lately, Kazuto is aware he’s a man, he knows Kaname is tall, and good looking, and was the kindest person ever. He’s known it since they were kids, but now, whenever would even just exist around him, he felt as if he couldn’t breathe. For a period of time he wasn’t even able to keep eye contact with Kaname that long without immediately breaking it in 5 seconds. He gets the same warm feeling whenever he hears girls gushing over the ever so likeable and popular senior Yoshizawa Kaname, when they’re together and he catches a sight of Kaname hiding some letters that seemingly seem like they’re confession letters, or when a girl flat out confesses to him while Kazuto is right there.
He just hopes whatever this entire thing ends soon.
“Ugh, hurry, how much longer.” Kazuto groans as he lays sideways on the floor. Kaname laughs at the sight.
The two were in the school’s dance room, Kaname had extra practice for a performance the seniors were doing as they were graduating in just a few more months— It would be his final performance ever in that school, and he’d be leaving Kazuto soon. Not that it should be that big of a deal. But still.
“Can you help me for this last part? I promise we’ll go get food after, I’m supposed to lift my dance partner here.” He says.
“Me? But I’m a man.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem.”
Kaname walks over to him and drags him up by the arm to the middle of the room. Explaining to Kazuto what he’d need to do and what the move was. Kaname was going to do a pirouette and jump over to him then lift him and all Kazuto has to do is jump a bit. That was it. The problem lies in the hand placement because now Kaname’s two hands were situated right at both sides of his waist, ready to lift him.
“Like this, alright?”
“Uhm.. alright..” He manages to not fumble over his words. This was not good for Kazuto, his dilemma over his best friend was still going on and now they’re doing this. Or maybe he was just reading too much into it.
Kaname plays the music and does his dance, Kazuto sways a bit in a horrible attempt to recreate Kaname’s dance partner, before the awaited move comes and Kaname lifts Kazuto by the waist, he manages to jump but the next move was way too complicated for a beginner. In the middle of the spin, Kazuto’s leg gets tangled and he trips over himself, he was expecting his back to hit the wooden floor but he’s greeted with a strong arm holding him up. He looks up to see Kaname.
“How did you know this was the ending pose.” Kaname jokes while they’re holding the pose.
Kazuto scoffs, “Don’t make fun of me.” He pouts and looks away.
The older lets out a giggle again, “It’s seriously this.”
Kazuto steadies himself up and takes a few steps away from the other. His heart had already been beating rapidly from the moment the other wrapped his hands around his waist but this was too much. He almost felt bad at how he was getting flustered and bashful from something that was probably just an innocent gesture to the other.
“That’s all, let’s go eat, I’ll treat you to gyudon.” Kaname suggests
Kazuto almost immediately beams. It’s ridiculous how well the older knew him. Setting aside the feelings from just now, he waits for Kaname to change back into his uniform and they make their way to the restaurant.
Kazuto lied. He was unable to set the feelings aside. The spot where Kaname was holding him still felt the ghost of his touch linger and it refused to go away. His brain keeps replaying how close their faces were when Kaname caught him mid-fall. It felt like a horror movie he wasn’t able to pause before the jumpscares like he always did. He needs to stop all these thoughts because Kaname was sitting right in front of him, and the other might’ve already realised how intense his stare was.
“Why are you looking at me like that…?” Kaname says in confusion, hand with spoon floating in mid-air when he catches site of Kazuto’s stare.
“Are you in love with your dance partner?”
“What?” Kaname was so confused his brows almost knitted together.
“Those dances were so intimate.” Kazuto adds, at this point he’s not even thinking twice from how his brain has probably melted away from too many intense emotions in a single day.
“It’s just a dance, don’t think so much of it.” Kaname assured him.
Right, it’s just a dance and Kazuto was the one that needed to calm down. In the midst of being deep in thought, his train of thoughts get interrupted by Kaname putting more beef on his bowl from his own one.
“You should eat more, you’re so small.”
“You always do this!” Kazuto complained.
“Well look how small you are, I almost tossed you just now.” He responds, cool as ever in contrast to Kazuto who was told he was the most animated person you could meet.
Kazuto rolls his eyes and continues to stuff his mouth, actually feeling a bit better once he was full again and drank some water. Both of them were done with their food.
“Why do you take care of me even more than my brother?” Kazuto asks absentmindedly after they leave the restaurant.
The question seemed so out of the blue, it catches Kaname off guard as he chuckles.
“Who knows?”
The day of their graduation concert finally comes. Frankly, he didn’t even feel like going when Kousaku and Ryota invited him but Kaname was performing and kept bothering him with it. He begged Kazuto to arrive early and meet him backstage since they couldn’t go together as performers were required to arrive even earlier.
Kazuto does as he’s told, reluctantly, but he makes his way throughout the busy backstage crowd. A few people seemed confused seeing him there because Kazuto’s name was not on any of the performance lists but he continued searching for Kaname. The search gets cut short when he feels an arm drag him away, what’s worse he knew whose hand it was.
Kaname.
“You made it.” He smiles at Kazuto once they’re in a more quiet corner.
“Obviously.” Kazuto says like it wasn’t even up to debate he would always be there for him, although some might refer to him as a ”tsundere”. “Why did you even need to see me?”
Kaname shoots a mischievous grin, “I think I”ll do better if I see you first.”
Kazuto lets out a sigh in disbelief but later can’t hide the smile on his face, especially seeing Kaname beaming at him. “Weirdo.”
“I know.”
“I’ll go look for a seat.” Kazuto says.
“I’ll make sure to find you.” Kaname promised.
Kazuto thinks he’s joking “There’s way too many people.”
“No” He firmly shot him down, “I definitely will.”
Not wanting to argue, Kazuto just nods before bidding him goodbye as he rushes to the audience and joins Ryota and Kousaku with some other friends.
“Are they starting with singing performances first?” Jun, another senior, who refused to join any performances asked.
“Yes, and yes Jun, I know Takato is going to be singing.” Ryota says before Jun can follow up.
“Just thought you guys should know, and hey!” Jun exclaimed when he notices Kazuto had taken his seat beside them all “Isn’t Kaname performing too?” The question was obviously directed towards him.
“Uhm yeah, why?” Kazuto said innocently.
“You should be excited too.”
“I am” Was all Kazuto said before looking back to the front, not wanting to dig into what that was supposed to mean.
The concert shortly starts after too as the lights dimmed and the students who were the hosts came out. The performances start with vocal ones, as expected with intermissions between of short videos the seniors compiled of them as memories. Some clips had Kaname just smiling or giggling and Kazuto would be lying if he felt his heart skip a bit during those parts. The performances continue until finally it was Kaname’s ballet performance.
Kazuto already what most the performance looked, heck he even “danced” one part but he digresses, yet he still felt a weird mixture of nervousness and excitement.
“Kaname…” Kazuto exclaims unconsciously during the performance.
“I think you’re a bit too obvious.” Masaya, a junior he got close to, whispered.
Kazuto pays no mind to him as he smacks him, eyes glued to the performance. It finally ends and the moment Kazuto was waiting for comes once the tram bowed.
Kaname and him lock eyes.
He found Kazuto.
Even amidst the large audience.
Kaname is beautiful.
2022
It’s the day of Kaname’s graduation. Kazuto makes time during recess and rushes over to Kaname’s classroom, the entire hall was busy with seniors that had their corsages pinned to their blazer taking photos.
When Kazuto slides the door open, a few eyes look at him but promptly look away, knowing who he was there for anyways. Kaname was taking photos by the window with a few friends when he spots Kazuto. He waves at his friends before making his way towards Kazuto.
“You’re here.” Kaname walked over with a smile.
“What kind of friend would I be if I missed your graduation?” Kazuto gives a small smile. “Here’s your flower” He hands over a tiny bouquet.
Kaname doesn’t have to know Kazuto spent the entire night decorating the single flower on his own. His final resort was to just stick a few bars of chocolate beside the flowers.
Kaname takes the bouquet and examines it, smile growing wider the more he looked at it “You made this for me?”
“Shut up.”
“Aww, are you shy?”
“Well do you like it?” Kazuto shuts his attempt to tease him up.
“I love it.” Kaname exclaims, eyes still glued to the bouquet.
Kaname suddenly takes Kazuto by the hand and drags him to the back of the class near the lockers. He stops the first guy that passes them.
“Hey, can you help me take a photo?” Kaname asks his classmate, handing his phone over when the friend agreed.
Kazuto steps away but is immediately dragged back to Kaname’s side as he slings an arm over his shoulder to keep him close, other than holding onto Kazuto’s bouquet. “Smile” Kaname whispers.
Once they take the photos, Kaname gets his phone back.
“Don’t miss me too much.” Kaname jokes.
“Excuse me? You live right next to me.”
“Still, I’ll miss seeing you during lunch and walking together.” Kaname said sadly.
“Just wait for me for like a year.” Kazuto said, but that one sentence immediately brightens the older up.
“So you’re planning to go to the same University as me?” He asks excitedly.
“We’ll see.”
Months later, Kazuto is back in Kaname’s room, laying on his bed exhausted.
“Gosh, how did you even take the university entrance exam.” Kazuto groaned.
“Well,” Kaname turned his chair around and slid over to the side of the bed where Kazuto’s head was laying on. “You need to study instead of coming over to my place to nap” Kaname bends over so his head was right above Kazuto’s.
Kazuto stays there for a moment, frozen in spot, before tossing to the side. “I’m not slacking off, look how many mock papers I did just here. I deserve a nap” Kazuto complained and Kaname laughed as he retreated from his position.
“Then let me join you.” Kaname says and gets up from his chair to lay next to Kazuto on the empty side of the bed.
The bed dips and Kazuto turns his head towards Kaname, his breath hitches when he realises how close their faces are. They’re dangerously close but no one moves an inch. It seemed Kaname’s childhood bed where they used to take naps together had grown too small for the two boys nearing their 20’s.
“A little cramped isn’t it?” Kaname asks in a teasing tone.
Kazuto continues to stare at him, making Kaname go silent. It’s so quiet with only the sound of the air conditioning filling the room in the middle of the hot summer day. The way Kaname looks at Kazuto is giving him the wrong idea. That combined with the years of how Kaname has been treating Kazuto, it has all been giving him the wrong idea. Kaname was a terrible man for looking at Kazuto like this, like he wants to kiss him. And what could Kazuto even do? What could he do when the months he spent in school without Kaname, he realised he had fallen in love with his own best friend he knew since he was a child. He hates how in moments like this, he would be taking advantage of Kaname’s kindness towards him and imagine they were a couple.
“Stop looking at me like that.” Kazuto says in a small voice.
“Like what?” Kaname says, he says it in the softest way possible.
Kazuto doesn’t know how to respond to that without confessing he wants to kiss him right at that moment.
“Whatever,” He turns to the other side, “I”m sleeping.” Kazuto shuts his eyes, refusing to deal with the situation at hand. That was too dangerous and he almost outed himself.
“Sweet dreams” He hears Kaname say before he seemingly goes to sleep too.
A few hours later, if Kazuto wakes up to himself ending up in Kaname’s embrace but stares at his lips for as long as he can, he doesn’t say anything.
And if Kaname notices that, he doesn’t say anything.
2023
Kazuto finally gets into the University of his dreams. Sure Kaname also attended this one, but he studied his ass off to nosebleeds and possibly even hallucinations at night due to the fact he wasn’t naturally gifted to be smart. However, the taste of success always felt better. Kazuto thought it was the first he had ever been proud enough of his scores that he could even announce it to all of his classmates when they asked him how he did. His parents were more than proud and his siblings were pleasantly impressed. Of course, Kaname, was the happiest of all his friends especially as the one who witnessed his suffering first hand.
Kazuto’s university life started amazingly, Ryota and Kousaku decided on entering the same university as well.
Today was the day they had to choose their clubs, Kazuto could no longer go for any sport related ones knowing how tired he’d be once he was loaded with school work, he knows university won’t be a walk in the park.
“Have you decided?” Kousaku asks, hand full of flyers from the countless clubs trying to attract freshmen into their club.
“I’m going to dancing.” Ryota easily says.
Right, Kaname would be in dancing too, he didn’t even bother asking the older what club he was in. But come to think of it, he didn’t see Kaname at all and they’ve definitely passed by the dance club seeing as how Ryota had the flyer. Kazuto fishes his phone out.
Kazuto
where are u??????
Kaname
wdym
Kazuto
i didnt see you when we met the dance club
Kaname
oh
keep walking
until you reach the middle
Kazuto
wth?
fine
Kazuto puts his phone back into his pocket and announces to the other two he’ll go browse the rest of the clubs they haven’t seen yet. He continues walking, sneaking glances at every tent hoping to see Kaname who refused to give out his location until Kazuto notices an extremely crowded one. It catches his attention, he makes his way there to see the commotion.
His jaw drops when he sees Kaname there, handing out flyers to join the surfing club. When did he even have time to learn?
“Kaname?!” Kazuto practically yells and everyone stares at him in confusion from the sudden loud noise.
“Oh get in line, everyone’s here to see him too.” Someone says and Kazuto has to resist the urge to fight her because Kaname walks over to him.
It seems like he was popular in university as well.
He looks at Kazuto with a sheepish grin, “Yo.”
“Don’t ‘Yo’ me you surf?, I know you like fishing but I didn’t know you liked the water this much.”
“Listen, I just randomly joined this as a freshman, and it was really cool. It felt like I was dancing on water. I didn’t have time to tell you because you were studying really hard and I was busy too.” Kaname finally explains and Kazuto hates how he feels like a betrayed wife catching her husband in the act.
“Okay…” Kazuto purses his lips.
“Maybe you should join too.” Kaname suggests.
“Really now?” Kazuto says sarcastically, “Like I would ever join just for you.”
“Welcome to our surfing club!” The president greets all the new members during the first club meeting.
Kazuto joined the surfing club, but not without dragging at least Kousaku with him.
They sit on a random large bean bag the two found in the club room, this room felt really cozy, he’d expected there to just be chairs and table but there was an entire sofa, bean bags and mats everywhere.
“Next week, I’ve spoken with the board and they’ve approved my request to take you all on your first surfing trip! We’re quite a chill club since we aren’t able to conduct activities all the time, so don’t worry about this club eating up all your time like the others.” She jokes and the room bursts into giggles.
“Now before all that, let me introduce all your seniors in charge.” She goes around calling the said seniors to stand up and tell their names, until it reaches Kaname. “This is our vice president! He’s only a second year but he’s been helping us a lot, he’ll take over once I graduate next year.”
“Vice pres huh.” Kousaku whispers to Kazuto and he rolls his eyes.
“Hello everyone, I’m Yoshizawa Kaname.” He stands up and bows, the room erupts in cheers to make it even more obvious all his fellow freshmen joined for Kaname.
“We have you to thank us for all these new members!” The president jokes as she laughs with her arm holding his bicep, Kazuto intently watches, how much longer was she even going to keep her hand there? That wasn’t a natural movement.
“You look painfully jealous.” Kousaku says almost immediately.
“Shut up, I don’t care.” Kazuto retaliated.
“Oh you definitely do, and look,” He points to their front, “Speaking of the devil.”
Kazuto turns his head to where Kousaku pointed and sees Kaname making his way towards them.
“What do you want.” Kazuto said, albeit a little bitter.
“Come with me?” Kaname holds a hand out, waiting for Kazuto to grab it and help him stand up.
It takes Kazuto every muscle in his body to not go with him, but Kousaku, the devil, pushes him and Kazuto has to hold onto Kaname in a state of panic. Gosh, the meeting wasn’t even over yet. Kaname pulls him out of the room.
“What are we doing here?” Kazuto finally asks once they shut the door.
“Alone time.”
“Excuse me?”
“You looked betrayed from the start until now seeing me in this club.” Kaname stated.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say betrayed, I’m just shocked you’re here. It’s not like I have the right to control you.” Kazuto says.
“You can.”
He almost chokes on air.
Kazuto wants to respond from utter-disbelief but the door suddenly opening scared him more. It was the president.
“Ehem?” She looks at Kaname, then barely glances at Kazuto, “Mr Vice, let’s finish the meeting and briefing first before running off doing random things?” She says it like a joke, but somehow Kazuto feels as if he’s been scolded.
“Right… sorry.” He gives her a smile before dragging Kazuto back in.
The meeting continues and Kazuto listens to whatever they say, not having anything better to do because even Kousaku was falling asleep. Then came Kaname’s turn. He was explaining how the surf trips usually went and their usual itinerary.
Kazuto watched intently, as if he’d never heard Kaname’s voice before, he watches his every move, how he was tapping his feet, how he looked at the screen then back to the audience, how his gaze lingered on Kazuto longer than it should.
His portion feels like it went on for hours until before he knew it, the meeting was over.
“We’ll add all of you to the group chat! Don’t forget to check updates on the trip there.” The president said before dismissing everyone.
Kazuto steals more glances at Kaname just to see the president all over him again. He couldn’t help but feel a wave of jealousy overcoming him. He didn’t need a rival, hasn’t god already tested him enough in highschool?
Kousaku, who finally woke up, looked confused as ever when he followed Kazuto’s vision of sight to see the same thing. Kazuto sighs and drags him out, ignoring when Kaname wanted to rush over to him.
“Relax.” Kousaku says once Kazuto and him are outside. By this point, both his friends knew about his crush on the older.
“I’m relaxed.”
“You’re practically seething.”
“Whatever, fuck him.”
“Oh i’m sure.”
Kazuto might just get a migraine at this point with how pissed he was but he keeps it all together. He might just lose Kaname and he needs to deal with it. Kaname had a one year headstart in discovering the world, of course he’d have more experiences in life than Kazuto. This was all natural and he had to accept it, Kazuto crushing on his own best friend was the unnatural thing that he had to stop.

let's stay playful
Maybe Kazuto was pissed, but he wouldn't transfer that level of anger to his friends. Why was he even mad? And more importantly, what was wrong with Kaname saying Kazuto can control him. There were too many things going on at the same time but the last thing Kazuto expected was to see Kaname in front of his dorm knocking at 7pm. Kousaku and Ryota ask him who it is when Kazuto answers the door but Kaname silently tells him to keep it a secret.
“It’s just the RA.” He says before stepping out, shame creeping up when he realises he's in his pajama pants and he is in fact not comfortably at home with Kaname.
“Listen.”
“What do you want.”
“She's just a friend.” Kaname pleads.
“I don't understand what that has to do with me?” Kazuto tries to play it off.
“Come on, Mokkun.” Kaname calls him by the nickname he hasn't heard in awhile.
“Kanakun.” He mirrors, in a serious tone.
It's his first time seeing Kaname this troubled, the most he's looked troubled was whenever Kazuto was sick or when they got into small arguments. Kaname runs a hand through his hair, and Kazuto definitely isn't gawking at the shirt he's wearing.
“Let's talk in my dorm? My roommate moved back home for awhile.”
Kazuto stays silent, pretending he's pondering over it before agreeing, knowing he would've said yes in a heartbeat. So he lets Kaname guide him to the room. If it was anyone else, he'd raise a brow at inviting him to an empty room at night to be alone.
When they arrive, Kazuto notices the dorm really is half empty. Has Kaname been living alone for months now? Maybe that's why he always came back and met up with Kazuto. He doesn't know if there's going to be any dorm checks today, especially as freshmen, but Kazuto figures he won't be here for long anyways.
“You can have a seat anywhere.” Kaname looks around the room.
“Are you interested in her?” Kazuto asks without missing a beat, catching the older off guard.
Kaname sighs and gives Kazuto a weak smile, slowly walking towards him. “I’m not, and I never will be.”
“Why do you have to over explain this to me?” Kazuto takes a few steps back, alarmed by how Kaname doesn't stop walking towards him.
“You just looked, a bit sad.” He takes a few more steps.
Kazuto is running out of space to walk back into as his back eventually collides with the door making a thud sound.
“I’m not. You can date whoever you want.” Kazuto defended himself.
Kaname is insanely close again, Kazuto can practically feel his breath on his face. He looks at him in silence.
“Was I reading things wrong?” Kaname asks. “Sorry if I was.”
At this point, Kazuto is completely distracted by their proximity, lips a mere few inches away from connecting, body almost pressed into him. It was the first time he felt how much bigger Kaname has grown compared to him. The older had such a firm body from all the dance exercises, he was taller, and he had broader shoulders.
“You… you weren't…” Kazuto squeaks out in the tiniest voice ever.
“What did you say?” Kaname bends down even more, turning his head so his ear was right in front of Kazuto’s lips. “Say it again.”
“I don't care who you have a crush on.”
“Are you sure?” Kaname raises one hand up to rest it on the door beside Kazuto’s head, the hand holding his weight.
Kazuto shakes his head.
“You should, though.” Kaname turns his head back to look at Kazuto and their faces were insanely close.
Kazuto stares at him like a deer in headlights, every fibre in his body is trying it’s best to not look at Kaname’s lips below, they were so tempting, but what catches him off guard is when Kaname’s eyes look down to his lips instead.
What the fuck?
And so he does the unthinkable.
Kazuto crashes his lips into Kaname’s. He's equally shocked when he feels Kaname kissing him back and so he wraps an arm around Kaname’s neck, pulling him in closer. This felt so wrong, it was his best friend he grew up with, yet Kazuto kept pulling him in for more as the pace of their kiss quickened full of growing hunger and lust.
They eventually break the kiss off and Kaname rests his forehead against Kazuto’s
“I love you.” Kaname says whilst breathing heavily. Breathless from the kiss. “I've loved you from the first time I saw you. I thought if I became your best friend I could just be by your side forever without having to confess these feelings but they're so hard, Kazuto, I want you.”
Kazuto feels as if his heart might just be the reason his body gives out. His heartbeat is so rapid his heart might as well just crack open his chest. Kaname has loved him. Since forever. Kaname. Loves. Him.
“Kanakun I…”
“I know, I shouldn't be in love with my best friend. I feel bad I even forced you into this situation now but I couldn't keep it in anymore…”
Hearing this, Kazuto almost immediately argues back. “Force?” He says confused “I love you too. I've always known since you graduated.”
Hearing this, Kaname looks genuinely surprised for the first time. It was as if he was dead set on the fact Kazuto would never love him back the way he craved it.
“You..? Me…?”
“Kaname, I love you, not in a friendly brotherly way, I want to date you.” Kazuto shocks himself with how blunt he was, but he blames it on the kiss.
“What a relief…” Kaname snakes a hand around Kazuto’s waist, pulling him in for a tight hug while the other rests on his nap. “What a relief… I’m so happy.” He sounded as if a whole weight had been lifted off from his shoulders. “I love you so much.” Kaname breaks the hug to stare into Kazuto’s eyes again.
Kazuto plants another kiss on him then smiles. “Of course, It's mutual.”
That was enough for Kaname to go in for a kiss again, this time Kazuto can taste his desperation and hunger, as if he'd been waiting since forever— though he technically did. Kaname keeps his hand around Kazuto’s waist to pull them as close together as possible while the hand on his nape deepened their kiss. At some point, the kiss felt so good he realises Kaname’s hand had sneaked it’s way into his hoodie, azuto unapologetically let out a sound he'd never made in his entire life. His mouth parted from that and Kaname wasted no time entering him. Kazuto was practically on cloud nine, he always imagined kissing the older but such fantasies felt forbidden and made him feel terrible for seeing his best friend that way, yet here he was now reliving those fantasies— it was unreal.
They try their best to walk all the way to Kaname's bed while kissing, refusing to part for even a second after wasting all those years. Kazuto’s back falls onto the mattress as Kaname climbs onto him, effectively straddling the boy beneath him. Kaname breaks their kiss off to move onto his neck, leaving kissing all over the exposed skin before biting down on a spot. Kazuto never knew he even liked these things, the most he'd ever done was think of the older while he was showering but it would never escalate. This was everything he needed.
“Need… you…” Kazuto manages to mewl out, both his hands grasping at Kaname’s hair out of pleasure
“Just a moment.” Kaname sits up before taking his shirt off and helping Kazuto out of his sweater.
Kazuto pulls him in for a quick kiss once the older turns back to him, already missing all the attention.
“You don't think we're going too fast?” Kazuto asks when they break the kiss as they breathe heavily on each other.
“You don't know how long I’ve been waiting, it's okay.” Kaname assured him.
After years of knowing him the best, Kaname managed to learn even more about Kazuto that night. Kazuto’s life was simply just two words; Yoshizawa Kaname. The man he loved the most.
Kazuto gets the best sleep he's gotten in awhile in Kaname’s tight embrace.
Kazuto’s eyes flutter open, from the sound of the birds chirping. He manages to make out the sunlight beaming through the blinds that were barely doing anything to block it. He also turns around to see Kaname peacefully asleep. It was real, Kaname is real and he's right here holding Kazuto as if he would run away. Kazuto relaxes again as he studies Kaname’s face, he never dared to do this when they “accidentally” cuddled multiple times before— but now he was unapologetically checking him out.
“Do I look good?” Kaname says, smug.
Kazuto smacks him. “You're annoying.” He turns around and moves away, not wanting to face him anymore.
“No~ I’m sorry~” Kaname wraps his arms around the younger to pull him back in. “My beautiful boyfriend with anger issues.”
“Say that again and I'll refer to us as brothers.”
“Please don't say that when we're both still naked and in bed together….”
“Well don't be annoying first thing in the morning.” Kazuto rolled his eyes even if Kaname couldn't see.
“Hey, look at me.” Kaname moves his head by the chin to plant a quick kiss.
Kazuto tries his best to fight back a smile for the sweet gesture “If you think that’ll work on me now…”
“I’m sure it did.” Kaname giggles
