Work Text:

Jon is having… a day. Not a good day, because nothing especially good has happened, but not a bad day, because no one has tried to brutally murder him yet. He has been trawling through statements, searching for something that makes anything make sense. Of course, nothing makes fucking sense in this godforsaken archive, but reading statements takes his mind off of his situation, and puts it in worse ones.

His door gets kicked open, slamming against his filing cabinet. He jumps and drops the statement he had been holding, sheets of paper fluttering to the floor. Daisy storms in, slams her hands down on Jons desk, and fixes him with a stare that makes his blood go cold.

“You upset Basira.” She growls.

“With what?” Jon asks. He has upset Basira recently, by accident, but he doesn’t want to admit to anything that Daisy doesn’t know about. He likes having his head attached to his shoulders.

“You stole her bookmark.” Daisy points to the statement now scattered across the office floor.

Vaguely, Jon remembers pulling this statement from between the pages of a book. It didn’t strike him as weird - statements end up in the strangest places, thanks to Gertrude’s avant-garde form of cataloging. The book looked like it was from the Institute library, something about blood rituals. There was no indication that anyone was taking ownership of the book, so Jon took the statement out and left the book where it was.

“Oh.” Jon slowly picks the statement back up. “Does she want it back, or-”

“She doesn’t remember what page she was on.” Daisy growls, like that’s a capital crime akin to murder. Considering her past, she might consider it so.

“One hundred and three.” He says as the Eye supplies it to him. She stares at him. “She was on page one hundred and three.”

“Freak.” She mutters, but she takes her hands off the desk and steps back. “Don’t do that.”

“Maybe I saw it when I took the statement out. Not everything is because of the Eye.” Jon insists.

“Yes, it is. Everything is the fault of Elias, and that stupid Eye, and you . Upset her again and no one will find what’s left of you.” Daisy storms out, leaving Jon feeling like having his head torn off would’ve been preferable.
