Work Text:
Macy knows from the moment it walks in that this isn’t Harry. Not her Harry.
It’s not his Darklighter, suave and cunning, charisma seeping out of him as he seduced her in her dreams.
No. It’s something else entirely, wearing his skin like a suit, a little too tight, a little too malfitted. The smile is wrong. The eyes are wrong. Something about every inch of him is wrong.
But it looks like him. And that’s what’s so unsettling is that she seems him and an innate part of her is screaming that despite all logic, all surface level recognition, that this is not Harry.
It tilts its head as it examines her, analytical and sharp as it takes in his observations. What is it seizing her up for? What is it looking for? What is it?
There’s a darkness, a greed, a starvation beneath the facade of Harry. Something so antithetical to the Harry she knows.
“Hello darling,” it says, its voice the right pitch but the wrong intonation. “I’ve been waiting for you to come home.”
“I’m sure you were,” Macy says.
And she knows it knows. Knows that it didn’t fool her for a second as it masqueraded as the love of her life.
“What did you to do Harry?”
The mask drops, but it remains in Harry’s skin. Its shadow grows, the air danker, its eyes darker. “Harry’s gone.”
“No he’s not,” Macy says, calling its bluff out of sheer desperation and denial, not letting herself even entertain the idea that Harry is— “What did you do to him?”
“You know,” it says, “Most demons settle for one of you human sacks of flesh. But me? I won’t settle. No, not for anything less than a Whitelighter.”
“How is that possible?”
“Oh anything is possible if you’ve got enough power, sweetie,” it says, and its words drip like oil spilling with the sound. “All beings are just a vessel to be used. To be taken. And this one, oh, he begged. He begged for me not to take you. He begged for me not to hurt you. He begged for me to take him instead of you. And, well, how can I resist an offer? Such a willing host.”
The words shake her and she takes a trembling step back. “No.”
“Oh, yes. He’d do anything for you.” It places a hand on her cheek. “And, well, a promise is a promise.” It’s eyes gleam. “I will raze destruction upon this putrid planet and you will be all that is left standing in its ashes.” It traces its thumb over Macy’s lips and she stutters back. “It’s what Harry wanted.”
And with that, it disappears into dark smoke and she is left with a hollow space where her heart is supposed to be and rage burning through her veins.
