Chapter 1: caffeee

Chapter Text

It's just coffee.
That's what Ray tells himself.

Except it's not just coffee, because nothing with Gerard has ever been just anything. It's always a little too much, a little too intense, a little too full of meaning that Ray doesn't know what to do with.

Also, Gerard's like ten minutes late, and Ray's already spilled sugar all over the table, accidentally said "hot" instead of "iced" when he ordered, and peeled the label off his water bottle so aggressively it ripped into pieces.

The café is too bright. The air smells like cinnamon and something fake and sugary and Ray's pretty sure he's sweating through his shirt.

And then the bell above the door jingles.

Of course it's Gerard.

He walks in with his hoodie up and rain on the sleeves, like something out of a weird sad art school film. His hair's longer now, it's curling a bit around his face, all messy and perfect in the way that makes Ray's chest ache. He looks tired, but in the kind of beautiful way where it feels like he's doing it on purpose. Eyeliner smudged just right. It was haunting.

Ray's heart did the thing. The one where it forgets how to be normal for a full five seconds.

"Hey," Gerard says, spotting him. His smile is the same one he always gives Ray, soft, a little crooked, like there's a joke only they get even though no one said anything yet.

Ray stands up like he's gonna hug him or shake his hand or something, but instead he just kind of waves at him like a dumbass. "Hey."

They order drinks. Gerard gets whatever he always gets, something insane with oat milk and hazelnut and way too much whipped cream. There's rainbow sprinkles. Ray doesn't ask. He's learned from the past.

They sit by the window, because Gerard likes it there, says he likes the way the light looks on the glass when it's all fogged up. Ray says "yeah sure" whenever Gerard asks to sit there, even though the seat is cold and kind of squeaky. Honestly, he'd sit on the floor if Gerard asked.

They talk about Mikey's newest idea for a dumb tattoo, about Frank sending twenty blurry pictures of his dog at 3am, about some weird comic Gerard's reading where everyone's dead but also dating. Ray laughs too loud at one point. It's fine.

But then it gets quiet.

Not weird quiet, just. Heavy. Like one of those silences that feels like it's leading somewhere, if someone was brave enough to just say the thing.

Gerard's stirring his drink with a straw, like, intensely focused on it. He hasn't even drank it. There's whipped cream on his lip. It's killing Ray slowly.

"You're quiet," Gerard says finally. He looks up, eyes soft. "You okay?"

Ray shrugs. "Just... thinking."

"About what?"

Ray looks out the window at the rain, at people walking past all blurred and unreal. He considers saying something dumb, something deflective, like lyrics stuff or aliens probably exist. But his mouth has other plans.

"I think I'm in love with you," he says.

Silence.

Not even pretend noise. The espresso machine, which had been aggressively steaming something in the back, shuts off like it's giving him a moment.

Ray swallows. "Shit. Sorry. I didn't mean to — I mean, I did mean to, but not like, blurt it out at you mid-whipped-cream stir. You don't have to say anything. I just couldn't keep... pretending this is normal. It's not. Not for me."

Gerard blinks. For a second Ray thinks maybe he actually just blacked out and imagined this entire thing.

Then Gerard leans in.

"Are you kidding?" he says, kind of breathless.

Ray blinks. "What?"

Gerard laughs. Not in a mean way, more like someone just unpaused a movie he thought was over.

"I thought you didn't want me," he says. "I've been reading into everything. Like, every time you looked at me like you were gonna say something and didn't. Every time I went home wondering if maybe I was crazy."

Ray just sits there, stunned. "I—"

But then Gerard's already standing. Coming around the table. Ray thinks he knocks over his coffee but it doesn't matter because then—

Gerard kisses him.

It's not smooth. Their noses bump. Gerard's cold from the rain. Ray's hand ends up somewhere stupid, like the edge of the table. But it's real.

Gerard's lips are warm and a little sticky from his drink. His hand's shaking a bit. He tastes like sugar and rain. Ray thinks maybe he's going to pass out, but in a good way.

When they pull apart, Gerard's smiling against his mouth.

"You have whipped cream on your face," Ray says, like an idiot.

Gerard grins. "Worth it?"

"Yeah," Ray says, heart still doing cartwheels. "Totally."

Outside, the rain is slowing down.

Inside, Ray feels like he's finally breathing again for the first time in forever.

Gerard kisses his cheek, then his nose, and leans their foreheads together.

"You wanna come over and pretend to watch a movie but definitely just make out on the couch instead?" he murmurs.

Ray doesn't even blink. "Absolutely."

So yeah. Maybe it was never just coffee.
Maybe it was always this.

He just had to finally say it out loud
