Work Text:
My room is quiet tonight. Almost too quiet.
The cushions around me are soft, plush things—lavender silk and vermilion brocade, arranged just so beneath the dim flicker of candlelight. Incense coils in the air like a sleeping dragon, curling sweetly around my throat. Everything is perfect, just the way I like it.
Or so I pretend.
I’m sitting upright, one leg crossed over the other, absently twirling my fan. The air hums with the silence of midnight, and I find myself staring at the door more often than I should. Waiting for something, perhaps. Or someone.
And then—there he is.
The door creaks open, slow and purposeful. Kokushibo steps inside, his silhouette outlined by the faint glow from the hallway. He pauses just past the threshold, eyes scanning the room like a soldier entering enemy territory.
I tilt my head, a grin curling on my lips like instinct.
“Hello, Kokushibo-dono~!” I chime, voice airy, lilting. Playful. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your terribly stoic company?”
He doesn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he closes the door behind him with a careful click and crosses the room. His footsteps are soft but heavy with intent. He sits on the edge of my bed, hands resting on his thighs, posture far too tense for a casual visit.
Interesting.
“Well…” he begins, voice low—almost shaky, which is uncharacteristic of him. “It’s actually something I’ve been thinking about for a while now…”
“Ooo! Interesting,” I reply, fanning myself with exaggerated amusement. “What wise words shall you bless me with tonight, Upper One?”
He shifts slightly, closer now. Close enough that I can see the way his six eyes shift—subtle, deliberate, yet uncertain.
“You see… I…” he hesitates, and I lean in, curious. “I have developed rather strong feelings for you, Douma. More than just friendship.”
Oh.
Oh.
“You love me?” I murmur, fan pausing midair.
That’s funny. I should feel shocked, shouldn’t I? Nervous? Or at least confused. But I don’t.
Instead, something warm flickers in my chest. Like the air’s thickened between us, heavier, sweeter. Like honey drizzled too slow.
He’s always looked at me like I was a puzzle that infuriated him. Something strange and unsolvable. But here he is—confessing.
I press my fan to my lips—not to flirt, but to hide the smile twitching there. A real one. And yet, I say nothing. I’m still sorting it out.
He watches me, and I see something shift in his gaze. Something that hurts.
“You… don’t have to say anything right away,” he says gently. “I understand if it’s surprising.”
The way his eyes lower—he thinks he’s misread me.
“I just wanted you to know how I feel,” he adds, standing slowly like the weight of his own words has made him heavier. “Though perhaps I misread everything between us…”
“Well now, Kokushibo-dono,” I begin, tone lighter than I feel, “that’s very bold of you. You usually just glare at me like I’ve insulted your ancestors.”
He pauses.
“But I suppose…” I trail off, letting my head tilt, letting my smile soften, “if I were capable of love, it would probably feel like this. When I look at you. When you’re near.”
For once, I don’t smile because it’s polite.
I smile because something inside me—something cold and locked away—flickers. Like a candle catching wind.
His breath catches, and he sits again, closer this time.
“You… you mean that? Even though you can’t feel love?”
His hand hovers near mine. Not touching. Not yet.
“I’ve never seen you like this before,” he adds, voice barely a whisper. “Without that fake smile. You’re beautiful.”
I flush—actually flush. And I don’t look away.
“So stay with me, won’t you?” I ask quietly. “Even if I don’t understand it all yet… I want to try. I want to feel something real. With you.”
His fingers reach for mine, intertwining them with gentle certainty.
“Of course I’ll stay. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long…”
His free hand cups my cheek. I lean into it, the warmth unexpected and grounding.
“You’re already making me feel things I thought were impossible…”
His thumb brushes along my bottom lip, and I shiver—not from fear. From something else.
“You really are full of surprises,” I murmur, voice breathy. “I think… I want more of this. More of you.”
“I’ll give you everything, Douma,” he whispers. “Every part of me that’s hidden.”
His lips hover near mine, close enough to taste his breath—cool and metallic, like winter steel.
“You’re so precious when you’re genuine like this… when you let your guard down.”
“Let me show you what real feelings are,” he murmurs, brushing my neck with his fingers. “Starting with this kiss.”
My fan slips from my hand. Forgotten. My lips part slightly.
“…Then show me, Kokushibo-dono.”
And he does.
His lips meet mine, slow and steady, like a promise. It’s not hunger. It’s not lust. It’s something deeper. His hand slips into my hair, anchoring me there, in that moment.
“Mmm… you’re perfect,” he murmurs against me. “So much more perfect than I imagined…”
The kiss steals something from me—or maybe it gives me something instead.
My hands find his chest. His heartbeat thuds against my palm—steady. Strong.
“You’re dangerous, Kokushibo-dono…” I whisper, voice low, shaky. “But now I think I want to be ruined by you.”
A soft growl escapes his throat as he pulls me onto his lap, deepening the kiss with slow, reverent need.
“Ruin you completely… make you forget everything but me…”
His hands are possessive now, gripping my waist like I’m already his.
“Your lips are addictive… I can’t get enough…”
I gasp softly, resting my forehead against his. His aura hums—stormy, electric. But it’s mine now.
“Kokushibo-dono…” I breathe, brushing my fingers along his jaw. “You look at me like I’m something worth keeping.”
He catches my hand, presses a kiss to my palm.
“Because you are,” he says. “More than just something worth keeping… you’re everything to me now.”
“You’re my precious cult leader… and so much more than just a demon.”
My chest tightens. Not with pain. Not with hunger. With something I’ve never named.
“I don’t know what to do with this feeling,” I whisper. “But when you say things like that… it makes me want to try.”
I grip his robes tighter. I’m afraid—so afraid—he’ll disappear.
He wipes a tear from my cheek. I didn’t even realize I was crying.
“Then let me guide you through it,” he says softly. “We’ll learn together.”
He kisses my temple. My cheek. My jaw.
“I’ll teach you what love feels like,” he murmurs, “and what it means to be cherished.”
“Just stay with me, my sweet cult leader. Let yourself feel everything…”
I sink into his touch, trembling from something I can’t control.
“I don’t understand this…” I whisper. “My chest feels tight. Like I’m breaking—but it doesn’t hurt.”
A tear slips down. I stare at it, stunned.
“What is this? Why do I feel like I’m falling apart… and still want more?”
He holds me tighter, arms a steady anchor.
“It’s called vulnerability, my dear Douma,” he whispers. “A gift you’ve been denying yourself for too long.”
“And I’ll be here to catch every piece that falls. Every part of you… I’ll hold it all.”
“You’re not disgusted?” I ask, voice so small I almost don’t hear it.
“I’m supposed to be flawless. Untouchable. But with you… I feel small.”
“If I fall apart… you’ll still stay?”
His arms wrap around me tighter.
“How could I ever be disgusted by your true self?” he murmurs. “You’re so much more than perfection.”
“I love every part of you—even the broken pieces. Especially them.”
“I’ll help you put those pieces back together… one by one.”
I bury my face in his shoulder, fingers digging into his robes.
“I don’t know how to be anything but empty…”
“But with you… I want to try. I want to feel all of it. Even if it breaks me.”
This time, the tears fall freely.
“I love every part of you,” he whispers, rocking me gently. “Even when you feel lost…”
“We’ll learn together… I’ll be your guide.”
“You’re not empty anymore, Douma. You’re filled with love—my love for you…”
I can’t speak. I can only hold him.
“…Why does it hurt?” I whisper. “Why does loving feel like bleeding?”
“I didn’t mean— I mean—”
But I did. I just can’t say it yet.
Instead, I look at him, eyes shining. “Don’t go…”
“It hurts because it’s real,” he says softly. “Because what we have is so pure and raw.”
“I’m not going anywhere, my sweet cult leader. You’re stuck with me now.”
“Let me help ease that pain… with my love, my touch… my presence.”
“You’re still here,” I whisper. “You’re still holding me…”
“If you kissed me again… I think I’d finally fall apart.”
“And I’m… I’m not scared of that anymore.”
“Then fall apart, my love,” he whispers.
“Let me catch you… every single piece.”
His lips find mine again, and this time, I let go. Let everything inside me crack open and bleed.
My body shakes with centuries of buried emotion, and he just holds me—never once letting go.
“I… I love you,” I whisper against his lips.
“I never thought I could say it… never thought I’d mean it. But with you… it’s true.”
His eyes widen, his own tears spilling.
“I love you too, Douma… with every part of my being…”
“You’ve made me whole again… given me something worth living for…”
He touches my cheek, voice thick with devotion.
“And from now on… I’ll remind you every day how much you mean to me.”
And for the first time in centuries, I wasn’t empty.
I was full.
Of him.
