Work Text:
The weather had been picking up lately, usually staying in the range of 21-27°C (70-80°F). Just in time to add on stress for final seasons.
Akito rolls over to lay on his side. That didn't work to cool him down so he flipped his pillow to be on the cold side. Laying back down, he stared at the dark ceiling. Akito couldn't sleep no matter how much he tried to. It was due to a mix of the high temperatures and the stress of final exams he would have to take.
Akito understood he wasn't going to fall asleep anytime soon. He could try texting someone like Toya, An, or Kohane. That last choice seemed tempting since she was his girlfriend. Akito took out his phone and went to her contact.
"*Are you still awake?*"
He stared at the screen. She had seen the message. A few moments later and his phone vibrated.
"*Yeah, I'm studying. Did you need something, Akito?*"
Akito paused once he read that. It did make sense that was what she was doing. The four of them agreed to take a break from doing major events while final seasons was amidst. Yet his plan was to ask Kohane to come over so he could have someone to talk to; he would feel bad for pausing her studies just for him. Kohane was taking plenty of advanced courses — less than Toya, but definitely more than Akito and An combined. There was a large importance for her to studying for her finals. Despite knowing every reason why he should keep his wants to himself, he ignored them all.
"*Can you come over? I can't sleep.*"
"*I can't. My dad thinks I'm in bed by now and I don't want to sneak out.*"
Shit. She couldn’t. Akito was very disappointed by this matter, but he understood.
"*Alright. Can you face time instead?*"
"*If I'm quiet, yeah.*"
Akito sat up as he went to go face time her, and a moment later, she picked up. She was sitting against her bed.
"Oh— your hair is down and... glasses," he said. He found her absolutely beautiful already with her wearing pigtails and contacts, this was just another combination she could pull off. Kohane could mesmerize him by doing anything.
Akito laid back down, holding his phone above his face, before he muttered "You look like an idiot."
Kohane laughed at the sound of his voice, understanding that the comment he made wasn't made with any malice. Akito eyes widen at the smile that was on her face. He sat up and sighed.
"Damn. I wish you were here with me, or I was there with you," Akito complained. "That way I could've taken a picture of you laughing. You look... really pretty right now."
"Huh?" Kohane was very caught off guard by the compliment. Akito wasn't one to give them out — only if it was about music — to her. So it wasn't unexpected that she'd turn red at that compliment. Akito noticed her face and couldn't help, but blush too due to how awkward he felt.
"Sorry— shit. Uhm, did I make you uncomfortable?" he asked and Kohane quickly shook her head.
"No!" she said urgently before calming down. "No. Not at all. I actually really liked it... so feel free to keep doing it."
"Great."
There was some silence between the two. Neither one knew who to continue the conversation after that.
"I ain't distracting you from studying, am I?" Akito asked, trying to change the subject.
"Ah, well, you are," Kohane said, "but I don't mind. It's a nice break! I'll go back to studying once you fall asleep though."
"Alright, that's fair."
The heat kept getting worse and Akito's tolerance for it lowered. He started shuffling in bed to get his blanket off of himself.
"Akito? What are you doing?" Kohane asked.
He sighed as he laid back down. "It's so damn hot in here and I'm getting really sweaty. I'm even considering locking the door just so I can take my shirt off. Obviously I won't though."
"Is it really that hot there? My house usually doesn't get that way."
"Yes. It's miserable— wait," Akito suddenly sat up. "Your house isn't hot right now?"
"No, we have to keep the A.C. on for Count Pearl. Snakes can get overheated easier compared to humans," Kohane explained.
"Kohane, if I asked you for a favor," Akito paused, it was easy to tell he was planning something with his tone of voice, "would you listen?"
"Yes," she said.
"Can I stay over at your house until it isn't hot anymore?"
"No."
"You said you'd—"
"You just asked if I could listen!" Kohane laughed. "You didn't say I had to accept."
"Damn," he sighed. "I've been outplayed. But seriously, could I?"
"Maybe once in a while," Kohane said, "but I'm also not sure how my dad would feel about my boyfriend staying over for the night."
"I guess that makes sense," Akito said. "I probably should stop bothering you and your attempts to study. Should I hang up?"
"I can remain on call. I'll just be silent and the phone might be angled weirdly since I won't be holding it up," Kohane said.
"Yeah, I'd like that."
Akito laid on his side and he watched as Kohane set the phone down. It was definitely was an odd perspective, but that didn't matter to Akito. He could still see Kohane at the very least. Watching Kohane stretch and sigh as she studies for her finals was all Akito needed. He could focus on her and not the heat. He could stop thinking and look at her. He could let himself sleep.
