Work Text:
It was decidedly unpleasant to go from kissing his brother while they cuddled to watch a scary movie to being shoved out of the bed, with no warning but a bright white flash that whited out the room. “What was that for?”
“Oh no. You do not get to play the victim here.” While Sam would say that, sometimes, depending on where things stood in their relationship, Dean had really thought they’d done some good work and he’d improved to where Sam didn’t need to accuse him of playing the victim. If he knew what was wrong, why Sam was mad at him, he might defend himself against accusations based on miscommunication or Sam getting bad information, but if Sam was upset about something Dean had actually done, he’d take accountability and apologize, for the effect it had if not the intent.
First, though, he needed to know what the hell. It hadn’t actually sounded like Sam, either. “Not planning on it, Sammy, but I’m at a loss. What’s going on?”
Sam’s eyes narrowed, and his mouth dropped open a bit as he stared at Dean. “…Did someone give us a new script? Because I don’t remember this scene at all. Least that explains why you were all up in my space, I guess.”
Script? Scene? He was always up in Sam’s space. “Not helping here, dude, I’m so lost right now.”
Sam rolled his eyes, but it wasn’t Sam’s exasperated eyeroll. Dean was so confused right now. “Look, Jensen. Scene’s blown, you can drop the Dean voice, just talk like a normal person who isn’t trying to ruin his throat by the time he’s forty.”
Jensen. That name triggered something he’d buried as deep as he could, under the pile of all the other shit he was repressing. Heck, if this was the thing that had meant he couldn’t keep repressing his sick love for his little brother that ended up with them working through a bunch of shit and getting their relationship right? He’d take it any day. The memories of being thrown into a world where he and Sam were actors who couldn’t even speak to each other and weren’t even brothers were just too awful.
What was that guy’s name? Something Polish, he remembered. Padaleski? First name… right. “You’re Jared, right?”
“Are you kidding me.” Jared threw up his hands. “Yes, Jensen, I’m Jared. Are you brain damaged or something? Did the light exploding rain some debris on your head and make you forget that you’re not actually Dean Winchester?”
“Uh. Can’t say what happened to your boy Jensen.” Dean shook his head. Wow. This was so annoying. “I really am Dean Winchester. A few years back, me and Sam got sent to your world to hide from Raphael. When…” Shit, another name to try to drag up, and he’d barely paid attention to the guy after realizing he wasn’t actually Castiel and couldn’t help them. “Mitchell? Or whatever his name is. He got killed because of an angel civil war.”
Jared’s face went from skeptical to pissed. “If you mean Misha, that is such a low blow, you forgetting his name.”
“You are obviously not Sam.” Dean finally picked himself up and got in Jared’s face. “Look in my eyes. Tell me. Do you really think Jensen’s a good enough actor to get this deep in character?”
Jared took a step back. “You know? I’d never admit this to him, but yes. He is. Thing is, he would never set me up to insult him like that. I do remember that weird time around Misha’s death, where we got sent into your world where everyone believed we were actually Sam and Dean. How do we get me back home and you back your precious Sammy?”
Dean shrugged. “Best guess I have is to call Cas. Even if he can’t fix this, he’ll probably know who can. Before I call him, though, I have a question.” Jared nodded in invitation. “What the hell happened to make you and Jensen hate each other so much?”
“Yeah, figured you’d ask that.” Jared shook his head. “Jensen and I were together. Deeply in love. Keeping it secret from everyone because the network was still trying to pretend that our main audience was straight men, not women and queer folk of whatever genders, and they didn’t want gay leads to ruin their macho image. The Wincest fans were bad enough. Then Jensen got mad about the network making me publicly date Genevieve and cheated on me with Misha.”
“Oof.” Dean couldn’t imagine how they had managed not to end the show early, knowing that. “Castiel? We have…”
“It’s fixed,” Sam said, and Dean threw his arms around him in relief at hearing his brother’s voice sounding like him again. “Apparently, this time, prayer could reach across the worlds, and Gabriel came to get me.”
“Welcome home. Never leave again.”
