Late at night, the moon shone brightly on Destiny Islands. The only sound around was the waves slowly meeting the sand, and Kairi’s breath, fluttering softly next to Sora.
”To think, one day we would travel past the sea into a brand new world.” Her voice rang sweetly, softly. A feeling ran through Sora, and he chuckled, rubbing his sand-stricken hands against his shirt.
”Do you think there’s a group of kids somewhere, building a raft?” She spoke again, this time looking at him.
”Yeah, and one of them is probably a girl making her two friends build the raft.” Sora kicked his dangling feet idly over the edge of the pier. It barely felt like it had been years since they last sat at this spot, the sun setting in front of them. Kairi playfully hit his shoulder, but it was less of a hit and more of a tap. It got his attention anyway, tearing him away from the moon to an even more beautiful Kairi.
There was an uncomfortable weight next to him- not Kairi, never Kairi. He did his best to hide it, keeping it as close as he could, but all the effort in the world couldn’t hide his nervousness, especially his hand darting to his side to push the paopu fruit closer to his side, concealed from Kairi.
Anxiety consumed him, nibbling away at him like the cool breeze of wind that hit his cheeks. Kairi had to have asked him here for a reason, right? Oh, how it ate at him. He tried to cut his thoughts down, as if he was slashing through heartless with a keyblade. Unfortunately, nothing was that easy.
”So, Sora… I wanted to ask.” Her voice held something behind it, reminding him of one of those dolls that had multiple dolls inside of it. Kairi’s beautiful red hair had a shine to it, the moonlight illuminating it in just the right ways.
I mean, a paopu fruit isn’t just a fruit, it was so much more than that. It… It was like a connection to fate, or at the very least a romantic gesture. He knew Kairi wouldn’t make fun of him, he knew better than that. But she would more than likely distance herself from him, who wants to be around th-
”Sora. Hello? Earth to Soraaa…?” She waved her hand softly in front of him, and his face realized much more quickly than he did that he completely tuned her out. “Ah! Sorry- I- Kairi, I wanted… I’m sorry, I got nervous-” “It’s okay, silly- I” “and I totally ignored you-” “Sora, I wanted to ask if you-” “Kairi, I’m so sorry-”
”Would you want to share a paopu fruit with me?!” They both exclaimed, taking a paopu from their sides, holding it in front of the other, both red in the face.
“Oh-” They both said, again.
”You- Oh my…” Kairi gasped, putting her paopu down in Sora’s lap, her free hands covering her mouth.
”Uh… I-” He laughed, one he hadn’t let out in a loooooong time. He put his down in her lap, clutching his side weakly. Kairi practically jumped him, throwing her arms around him and laughing with him.
”I can’t…” She said, within laughing. “-believe we both had the same idea..” Her warm breath hit his ear, sending shockwaves through his entire back. They had embraced before, but this time her hug felt fuller than ever, like they were gripping the world in their hands.
”Well… it’s like they say, fate intertwined, right?” He laughed, picking off a small piece of hers.
