Chapter Text
“okay nathan. tell me what’s been going on.”
“i don’t think i want to.”
“bernadette sent you here practically on her knees begging me to help, i need you to talk to me.”
nathan never particularly liked talking to people, especially about his problems. bernadette had tried a million times to get him to talk to her, but he never did. what the hell could she do anyways?
at least yuki didn’t push his boundaries, but she was in the mental ward. same place nathan might end up in approximately 30 minutes.
“nathan!”
“uh…what’s your name again?”
“oh you fuc- MAEVE.”
“oh uh, well what is it maeve?”
“maeve” looked at nathan like he had just killed his entire family.
“ok then.” maeve sighed while sitting back down in the leather chair he had been sitting in originally. “so according to bernadette, you’ve been caught smoking, you haven’t showered in…holy fuck, 2 months?! and your dental hygiene is in the negatives.”
“uh yeah,” nathan said, tensing up. “that checks out.”
maeve sighed. “i see im not necessarily reaching you in this setting, so im going to give you my number, okay? that way you can text me whenever you want to talk.”
“alright then.”
with not much else to say, maeve exchanged phone numbers with nathan. they exchanged goodbyes and nathan left.
when nathan left the rowhouse of which maeve resided, he found bernadette waiting outside in her pink volkswagen beetle. with a melancholy sigh, nathan slipped into the passenger seat, putting on his headphones and blasting music.
their house was a good 30 minutes away, and nathan was not in the mood to talk. bernadette had different plans.
“so how did it go?”
“it was fine.”
“that’s not very convincing.”
“just fuck off.”
“i’m just trying to help you! i don’t want you to end up like yuki.”
“don’t talk about her like that.”
“yuki is a jackass and you know it.”
“just fuck off!”
“why? do you like her or something?”
“bernie i’m fucking gay.”
“whatever!”
the rest of the drive was in complete silence. nathan looked at the window while bernadette grabbed the wheel with a white-knuckle grip.
when they got back home, nathan immediately went to his room. bernadette wished she could talk to him, but she could never reach. with that sour note, they both went to sleep.
