Work Text:
It’s summer, of course days are going to be hot but today of all days seems to be the most intense heat summer has had.
You’re laid belly-first on the floor, head cushioned on your arm as you let the cold tiles lower your temperature.
You then feel someone nudge at your leg. “Get off of there, someone might trip over you.” It was Cove’s voice, saying it teasingly.
“This suckss.” You whined, still no intention of getting up. You felt Cove leave you alone and sat down on the couch. You looked up and saw that he got a popsicle from your Moms’ fridge. He is definitely family now, considering how comfortable he was to help himself from the fridge.
“Can I have a taste?” You asked. He looked back at you and shrugged.
“If you peel yourself off the floor now, you just might get a bite in time.” He gave a sly grin. Knowing Cove, it would only take three bites for him to devour the treat.
Realizing this, you quickly got up and took long strides to reach the couch. Despite the threat, Cove was already handing out the popsicle for you to take.
You hummed happily after taking a bite. The cold sensation in your mouth instantly relieves some of the heat inside your body.
Cove chuckled at how you acted. You looked adorable.
Finally up, you took the free space next to him and plopped down with a sigh, leaning heavily on the couch.
“There must be something else we could do to survive this heat…” You mumbled mostly to yourself. Cove hummed to acknowledge what you said as he continued to busy himself with his treat.
“All we have is the beach and popsicles..” You frown. You still love the beach but the limited choices were starting to look boring.
Cove opened his mouth to reply but the doorbell interrupted him.
Both you and Cove exchange glances. You weren’t expecting your Moms to be home early and Liz was also outside hanging out with her childhood friends.
You hopped off on your feet and went over to answer the door.
As the door opens, you spot the familiar black and white hair on your doorstep. Your eyes widened when you recognized who it belonged to.
“Baxter.” You smiled upon seeing him and he shared a grin in return.
“Hello.” He greets formally, hands on his hips and he tilted his head slightly to one side. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”
You shook your head reassuringly. “What’s up?”
Baxter was about to answer but Cove suddenly showed up at your side.
“Oh perfect, you’re also here.” He smiled wider as if the sight of you two were for sore eyes.
Cove raises an eyebrow, curious about what he meant. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong.” Baxter replied earnestly. “I’m here because I wanted to ask the both of you if you wish to hang out together today.”
“Oh?” Cove looked intrigued and you in turn brightened up.
“You have plans with us?” You questioned, trying to keep your eagerness at bay. Which failed, judging by how Cove suppressed a laugh.
Baxter’s eyes seemed to smile at your reaction. “I do, if you care to join me.” He said, his tone relaxed. He wouldn't mind if you turned him down. “I thought about going to a water park to enjoy the summer and figured, why not bring company to enjoy with? So here I am.”
“I would love to.” You answered, a smile still on your face. “It’s better than suffering the heat at home.”
Baxter nods as he smiles wider, a wordless thank you. He then turned his head to look at the person next to you. “What about you, Cove?”
“I’ll go. I’m not letting you two abandon me here while you have your fun.” He jested and the other, including you, chuckled.
“Perfect, this is absolutely perfect.” Baxter said, relieved and excited for what’s about to come.
With the plan in action, Baxter continued to share the details. “You don’t have to worry about anything, just bring your swimming gears, other things you might need and we’ll be good to go.”
You nod, mentally taking note of things. Already thinking about what you should bring.
“I’ll meet you outside later. Take your time, no rush.”
“Thanks, Baxter.” Cove says appreciatively as Baxter turns to leave. The receiver shook his head.
“No, thank you .” He corrects, as if what he offered wasn’t equal to your agreement to go.
Before you could correct him back, say that he’s the one doing a great favor, he had already left.
You shake your head, he’s still so strange. Then you closed the door behind you.
“Well, that was nice.” You remarked. Who knew your new neighbor would actively try to include the two of you.
“I know right? A free trip!” He says, his eyes beaming with excitement. You laughed slightly, sharing the same sentiment.
“I should go and prepare my stuff too.” Cove said and you nodded in understanding. He then walked towards the door to leave.
“See you later.”
You waved him goodbye and watched him go. You then turned around and went upstairs to get your things.
You try not to trip on your way up but with the excitement shaking your bones, you couldn’t help but get ready as early as you possibly can so you all can leave soon. Even though Baxter said not to rush.
You just can’t wait to hang out with both Cove and Baxter today. It’s going to be one of the best days ever.
