Chapter Text
It’s Monday morning and I can not seem to get out of bed. I'm so tired and just want to lay down a little longer. “Constance, you are going to be late for school,” my mom yells from downstairs. Grudgingly I leave my warm bed, put on my uniform, and go downstairs to leave for school. “Bye mom, bye dad, bye baby bro,” I say waving to them while walking out the door. It’s a cool September day with a small breeze blowing through my hair. The leaves are starting to change colors and I can’t help but smile when I see them. As I walk into school I can’t help but feel like everyone’s eyes are watching me, judging me for every move I make. I enter my first period math class and sit down waiting for the teacher. As soon as I sit down I can hear the footsteps of Ocean walking through the door. She yells out, “Connie! Hey! Save me a seat,” I smile, relieved to see my best friend. We’ve known each other since we were in kindergarten. Being now highschool seniors, Ocean truly has made her mark at this school. She has always won the position of high school president and she always has straight A’s. She’s always looked pretty, with her long red hair, straight posture, and shimmering hazelnut eyes. Me on the other hand, well, I’m nothing like Ocean. I only get B’s and I’ve never achieved anything important like Ocean. All I’ve ever gotten was “nicest girl in homeroom” for three years straight, and I’m sure my senior year will be no different. I have never been one to “stand out” as Ocean says, so I normally just follow whatever she is doing.
“Hey Ocean! Did you study for our math quiz today?” “Of course I did, when have you known me not to study?” She laughs and I laugh along knowing I shouldn’t have said that silly comment, of course she studied, she’s Ocean. Other students walk in and I recognize Ricky and Mischa from our choir. I never really talk to anyone else in the choir, except Ocean, and since she’s not really the best of friends with them, I’m not either. Class finally ends and I race Ocean to the choir room beating her by just a second. Father Markus, our choir director, welcomes us in and we sit in our seats waiting for the others. I love singing, it’s the only time I can actually feel good about myself without Ocean bringing me up. So when Father Markus told me about the choir I signed up instantly. I’m hoping to one day get a solo but Ocean always gets them, still, it doesn’t hurt to dream. Mischa and Noel both arrive at the same time, Mischa grunting at Father Markus while Noel kindly greets him. Ricky soon arrives after them, the clicking of his crutches giving him away. Father Markus then proceeds to close the door and we begin. “Today is going to be the day I finally get my solo, I can feel it,” I say smiling to myself, and with my new confidence boost, we start singing.
