Summary:

Au, where Maomao was raised by the La clan and was actually named Kan Lakai, while Maomao serves as a nickname

There were some issues with the new mannequins, and Lahan decides to ask his younger sister for her professional opinion. Unfortunately, once Maomao reaches the office, she bumped into not the nicest ladies

Notes:

If you feel like there are holes - you are not wrong. It was planned to be longer, but then I would be kicked out of the uni, so there it is. Enjoy!!ᓚ₍⑅^..^₎♡

Work Text:

The morning routine started to feel even worse after Lakai’s return. When she was away in the Western Capital, he could at least explain why it feels so empty and too crowded at the same time. Yao and En'en had been living there for his sister's absence after all. Little do they know about their shared bloodline. Or to be more specific that Maomao is actually fine with being part of the La clan and has this character in her name. It's interesting how Yao seemed to not be aware of that, even though she was also part of the other named clan. It could be that they never spoke of Lakai, but there is no way her uncle never met her or never heard their father talking about his precious princess like he always does. Or perhaps she never thought that someone of such high status can be that close to her. Whatever was the case, it was still not his problem and not his headache whether they knew or not.

At some degree it was, as he needed to watch servants' mouths and how they talk about their young mistress. That's exactly why he only sent Sanfan and Sifan. They could keep their mouths shut, as Sifan never served Lakai directly and Sanfan knew better than revealing her mistress's identity. They also weren't allowed in the main building, just to make extra sure that they accidentally don't walk into Lakai's room or her study downstairs. Why should he worry about her identity reveal anyway? It's not like he will suffer from the discovery, he always treats her like his little sister. Even if she became the Empress, he would still call her proudly “Kaikai”, like a good older brother.

He was just having breakfast in the living room when Sifan walked in and gave him a respectful bow. He might not be a perfect servant that Lahan has in mind, but still pretty good. Probably someone he would entrust to take care his dear sister, but she was not there and much rather preferred Sanfan when would come back.

«Miss Yao and Miss En’en wanted to ask if you would like to go to the palace together. What should I tell them?»

Well was that a tough question. This morning he was supposed to go to the medical office to seek Maomao anyway, since his honourable mother asked him to deliver the news of the invitation to the tea party from the Empress. One she, unfortunately, won't be able to turn down as usual, as she got a direct letter from her. Poor girl. But going in the same carriage as Yao and En'en… It's not that bad, he can use some saved money from it, but… Is some money worth riding in the same carriage as En’en? If he can avoid seeing her so early in the morning, he will surely do so. Start a day with a constant glare at him is not his understanding of a good morning. It's not like his sister didn't give him glares early in the morning, but her glares usually actually have reasons, while En’en seems to be never satisfied with the way he treats Yao, which means, he will get them regardless. He needs to see Lakai, which means he would definitely get a glare or two. A familiar feeling in the back of his head sent a shiver down his spine.

«Tell them that they should go alone. I need to take care of a couple more things back at home anyway. They can go first.»

«I will tell them just that. Enjou your meal, Young Master Lahan.»

The boy rose from his bow and quickly left the room, leaving him alone in the room. That's right, his meal. He wasn't even nearly finished with it. Lately, he would force his way into the annex and eat whatever En’en had cooked, since it was sometimes even too good to be true. Today, he just didn't feel like it. Perhaps today would be a little too long.

«He has to stay behind?... Maybe then we can wait till he's done?» Yao was always trying to keep her emotions together, but it was still a bit hard for her. Especially when it was about Lahan. Because of that, the disappointment in her voice was crystal clear. Poor Sifan was the victim of En’en’s intense glare. She was too unhappy again. It made the boy wonder if anyone else besides Yao got at least a neutral look. It’s best he stays out of it, just like the young master advised. He doesn’t have any way to make at least one of them happy, so it’s best to just bow and leave.

«It would be unnecessary. Master Lahan said that you should go first.»

«Seems it can’t be helped, young mistress. Thank you, Sifan.» En’en interfered immediately. She really didn’t want to go with Lahan together, did she? That was none of his concern anyway. His task was to deliver the information, and he did it. Now he can be free and ask Sanfan for his next task. She probably will be in that weird study downstairs again, cleaning it from all the possible dust that got there in a few hours. If she is not there, then she will probably be in an unoccupied bedroom. He was always interested in why Sanfan never allowed anyone else to clean those two specific rooms, but whenever he asked, she would simply turn him down, so he stopped doing that a long time ago. That led him to bow to two young ladies and leave in search of Sanfan.

Thankfully, the day in the palace was starting as peacefully as ever. He got to ride in the carriage alone, without any gazes from someone who doesn’t even know what she wants. When he came to his office in the building there weren’t a lot of papers that needed his attention, which meant that he can finish them quickly and go see his amazing little sister and share the unpleasant, for her, news. Unfortunately, the moment he sat down at his table, a military official burst into his office. He was breathing heavily and holding on the door frame, trying to calm down. Finally after a couple of seconds, he straightened and bowed.

«Master Lahan! We had a situation! A soldier got hit in the ribs!»

«What does it have to do with me? You have situations like that all the time, it’s no need to come running here to tell me that.»

He was annoyed. Here he thought he just quickly finished with the tasks on his desk and go annoy his little sister and someone dares to disturb this peace. Further more, over the situation that happens almost everyday, only adds to his and his sister’s work. Of course, there are Yao and En’en, who also have to work more, but maybe for them it’s for the best, will be tired and perhaps finally decide to find themselves new place to stay, because Lahan wouldn’t be Lahan if he didn’t go over to the annex to annoy them after a long day of work. Perhaps if they moved out, Lakai would move back into the residence and would go to work with him together, instead of living in the dormitory. It’s not like she has to sneak out to see the Moon Prince, some people in the residence know anyway and would help her to go out, if needed. He raised his head from his papers, throwing an annoying look at the official, and returned to looking through the documents.

«That’s the thing! It wasn’t done by a person. We placed new training mannequins yesterday. If we trust the word of the official who bought and placed them, they are of the highest quality and should serve us longer and better than the previous ones, moreover he specifically said that they are also cheaper, so better option for us and our strong soldiers. But they broke from the slightest touch and went straight into the soldiers ribs, breaking them almost instantly. I thought this might be worth your attention.»

Now that was interesting. Something new that broke instantly and is said to be of better quality, but cheaper price? Well, it might be worth his attention, maybe he can even somehow drag his sister into this… That would be nice, he couldn’t see her for the past week at all because she had too much work. She cannot just put her work on someone else and go fool around like he or their father would sometimes do. That might be a perfect opportunity. He raised from his chair and quickly fixed his case for abacus on his waist and went to the door.

«You should’ve said so immediately. Show me the way.»

«Yes, sir. Forgive me for keeping that for later.»

The official bowed once again and started walking out of the building. Lahan just fixed his glasses as he was silently following him. Now that they walked and there was really nothing to get from him, there was something familiar in him… That’s right, wasn’t he one of the military officials who were gone for a year, because they were in the Western Capital? He probably was, his voice was also familiar, Lahan even talked to him himself, asking to take good care of his little sister for him. He should’ve just gone himself there, but it was a trip by boat… So maybe it’s for the best that he stayed back home.

The walk ended sooner than he expected. It was a different training ground, it was a bit further from the medical office than the one he usually visited. That was probably the reason he never visited it – too far from the medical office and can’t be used as an excuse to annoy his working sister. Some lower ranking officials came running to them when they finally walked into the ground and were on their way to the mannequins.

«Master Lihaku! The trainy was sent to the medical office. What should we do now? Just continue? Is it truly ok to use those mannequins?»

«No. Do some exercises instead. Me and Master Lahan will take a look at the mannequins. Is there anything you need from me, Master Lahan?»

So his name was Lihaku? Now it helped him remember something Lakai was once talking about during dinner with their mother…

°•°

«Pairin was all glowing today. I am glad there is someone who can satisfy her needs. Hopefully, he will buy her out.» Fengxian initiated this conversation. It was rare for Lakai to be at home for the dinner, so that’s not a surprise that the mother wanted to talk about something. Even if this something had to be a brothel. At the dining tabel. Lahan could never understand how it’s not gross for them to discuss such things and eat at the same time. He should shut this conversation down as soon as possible.

«Yeah. Master Lihaku seems to be very found of her, just like she is of him. Perhaps in a couple of years he will finally save up enough to buy her out.» Maomao was even worse for him in this regard. How can she be so calm about that? Yes, she did spend a lot of time in the brothel helping their granduncle and stuff, but talking about someone else’s life inside the chambers… He never questioned his mother, because she was born and raised in the brothel, so there is no wonder, but Maomao was raised as a noble lady, yet she talks about something like that… And like it’s nothing as well!

Both women were slowly eating and drinking their wine, continuing to converse about the brothel and people from there like it was nothing. Finally, Lahan has had enough and loudly placed down his empty cup.

«Can we, please, not talk about something like that at the dinner table? I have a better question for you, little sister, if you may.»

Finally his mother and his sister threw him a look. Mother’s was more understanding, while Lakai looked annoyed. It’s not new for her to be annoyed with him whenever he stopped conversations like this, but today he sure felt like her gaze is slowly making a hole through him. She's really in a bad mood after the trip. Did she have an argument with their father there? Or is it just because she was here, like it was sometimes. Whatever was the reason for her especially bad mood today, he would surely try to make up for it later with some snacks or something else that she likes. She finally nodded, so he knows that now he can ask her his question.

«Is that Lihaku guy… Are you familiar with him?»

«Well, we met a few times before. And this time we spent a whole year together, as he was guarding the annex, where we were living and working. Why asking?»

«Just wondering. After all, he works under me, so I was scared he might know you as Lakai. But it seems he only knows “Maomao”?»

«Yes. Thankfully, he only knows Maomao. He also told me that you asked him to look after me. I understand your worry, but please. That request could blow everything off. You better tell me how Yao and En'en ended up living here?»

Lahan only rolled his eyes at her words. So what if he's worried about her? She was away for a year in someone else's land, where no one knows or cares about her. Of course he would ask someone to take care of her for him. Is he in the wrong to ask someone, who is under his command? Better to ask someone who he can, if needed, punish directly. He let the congee in his mouth melt and give him all the richness of flavour. En’en and Yao… She knew how to ask unpleasant questions to make him as uncomfortable as he made her.

•°•

He was the one who was watching over his sister in the Western Capital! That’s right. As far as he’s aware, he did a pretty good job there. His sister is back and fine, thankfully wasn’t kidnapped or hurt at all. He should thank him later. But at the moment he had to focus on the mannequins and issues with them.

«There is. Bring me the person who bought these. And also the documents related to purchasing and delivering. I will take a look at them on my own. There shouldn’t be anything wrong if I touch the broken one already, right?»

«There shouldn’t be... Then I will get those right away!»

And Lihaku left almost instantly. Well, better for Lahan, no one will disturb his work. He slowly stepped closer to the lying mannequin, it was broken into two pieces. How it managed to break someone’s ribs was a secret. He was pretty sure that all the mannequins were made with pretty light wood, the technique was really hard to accomplish. Of course, if those were cheap, there wouldn’t be any doubt that the material and technique are wrong and that would be the reason for its breaking. However, the question of how it managed to break someone’s ribs is still open... The wood was specifically made light, so even if it breaks and hits someone, it won’t hurt or break something.

His hand reached for the lower broken part and touched the wood. It felt nice to the touch, perfectly smoothed. This was an incredible work with the wood, but... When Lahan tried to lift it, he just couldn’t. He knew he was weak, but he wasn’t that weak, right? He did lift a couple of mannequins before, because he was on the training grounds and they would fall to his feet. So, no, he can lift mannequins, but this... Perhaps the reason for it is being broken and so it feels heavier. He should ask that Lihaku when he comes back with the documents. Who came just in time.

«Master Lahan. The person, who told about these mannequins, is absent from the work today for some reason, no one knows where he is. I managed to get the documents though. Would you like to overlook them here or should I ask them to be delivered to your office?»

He was standing there tall and looking down at him. At times like that it always annoyed Lahan that he was a military, not civil, official. Almost all his subordinates were taller and better built than him and they would question if he was truly capable to be in his position. But not that man. He looked serious and devoted to whoever he was serving to. His sister once said: “Master Lihaku is like a dog. A big dog. I swear, if he had a tail like a dog, it would always be wagged, no matter the situation.”. She didn't lie. He was truly like a dog, even when tried to look serious. That made him chuckle.

«Truly like a dog...» He whispered as quietly as possible. After that he cleared his throat with a cough and looked at the man. «I would rather have documents here, while I will be waiting. Since you can’t get that man, go get me my little sister from the medical office, Maomao. If she can’t come at the moment, then ask her to later stop by my office. Think you can do that for me?»

«Get Little lady... I mean Miss Maomao! Sure. We will be right back!»

And he ran off like a scared dog. Lahan knew that his sister had many names and got even more in the medical office thanks to that one doctor that just refused to call her by Maomao. There was nothing wrong with calling her Little lady. After all, it was true. If you add La after the lady, that would be how some servants used to call her when she was a child. He needed to ask someone to lift the mannequin for him, because he’s not familiar with its usual weight, so perhaps the soldiers will be able to tell. But it can wait till Lakai comes, so they can witness it together and come to some conclusion together. He can focus on the documented part for now, since some low-ranking official brought all the documents to him.

Lihaku was standing in front of the medical office, unsure of what to do. He knew that they were probably busy because of the man they brought, especially since he needs surgery, but hopefully he can steal Little lady for Master Lahan. It wouldn’t be good to return empty-handed... He finally knocked at the door and walked in, taking a deep breath to start his speech confidently.

«Good day!! Is Miss Maomao free? Master Lahan seeks her to help with the investigation of the incident. Can I take her away for some time?»

There was only one woman and she didn’t seem pleased to see him at all. She was preparing some medicine before he came and raised to her feet to greet him, giving a slight bow and an annoyed look.

«Good day, sir. Maomao is currently assisting with the surgery. Would you like to wait for her?» She sounded really annoyed. Why would she be? They never met before in person and he never ever heard of her. Maybe she heard about him, but there shouldn’t be any bad rumors around, right? He was a fast learner and wanted to earn more so that he can buy Pairin out and maybe that annoyed others, but that’s surely not something that can start rumors. Whatever, he should just get this over with and return to his superior.

«I can’t really wait... Once they are done, can you ask Miss Maomao to go to Master Lahan’s office? We are doing an investigation over how exactly he got hit in the ribs and he thought she might be helpful.»

«Will do. Have a good day, sir.»

«Thanks. Have a good day.»

They both respectfully bowed to each other and Lihaku walked out. What a headache. Maybe he should really wait till the surgery is over and come together with her. But wouldn’t it be better to just go by himself? It’s not his fault that she’s busy with the surgery, right? Master Lahan is very undersatnding, plus it’s her job. He should understand, right? Probably he will, he just needs to calm down and walk back to the training grounds like it’s nothing.

Finally they were done. It wasn’t that hard, she didn’t have to perform the actual surgery, only assist, but even that was hard. Doctor Li thought that since Maomao and Tianyu performed a surgery in a much worse condition, they can handle this one as a doctor and assistant as well. They did their best and no one tried to correct them, so perhaps it was a success. They will need to wait and see. The trauma was really weird. It was a real luck that the broken rib didn’t hit any organs, but it was in a really bad position, so they had to fix that in order for it to heal properly. Truly, what a hard day. She finally took off her white overshirt that had some blood on it and placed it near the bandages that needed a wash. Just a second later Tianyu did the same and they both got a tap on their shoulders.

«Good job, Niangniang, Tianyu. You did everything perfectly and the patient should be able to recover properly. We will see later, but so far I can say that it was a success. Wash your white robes and get some rest.»

«Yes, sir.» Both of them said in unison and reached for their overrobes again, but Maomao’s hand was stopped.

She raised her head and looked at En’en, who took her clothes out of her hand and just nodded.

«I will take care of that for you. You go to the Master Lahan's office, he sent someone earlier to ask for you. I wouldn't normally tell you, but it has something to do with our recent patient and how he got his trauma. You are interested in stuff like that, right? Now go till I change my mind.»

En’en was nice to her?... Had that ever happened before? No, never, especially if Yao was close. But Yao wasn't here at the moment, she was outside washing some bandages. So that was probably the reason why she was so urgent to make her leave and was even being nice. Yao did, for some reason, like Lahan, so it would be best if she didn't know that Maomao went straight to him or she would abandon her duties and follow her. Not the most convenient thing. She has to use this while she still can.

«Thank you so much, En’en! I will go then!» Her voice was so cheerful, despite her going somewhere so unpleasant as the military office of her clan. It's not that she disliked it, but Lahan will probably try to drag this as long as he can to spend time with her and then will also ask for hugs. She hates them, it's always so long and too warm in them, he always hugs her like it's the last time he sees her. Lately she even comes to stay home more and warns the day before, so he can either take a day off as well or just know that she comes and maybe prepare something. He's always worrying for nothing, she's here under watch of others and there's only the military around who wouldn't dare to touch her, because pretty much everyone knows who she is.

She quickly gave a slight bow to everyone in the office who she could catch with her eyes and left the office, walking at a bit faster speed than usual..

«Perhaps you could also wash my clothes while you are at it, En’en? Pleasee.» Tianyu was standing next to her now, as the space between them was previously taken by Maomao, who was long gone. He put his hands together and tried his best to look as sympathetic as he could. Unfortunately, that would never work on En'en, she was not interested in helping him at all. She wouldn't help Maomao as well if that glasses-wearing freak didn't call for her specifically.

«No. Do it yourself.» She cut him off without even looking at him. What a terrifying woman. woman indeed. She slightly hit his arm with which he was holding his overrobe in her direction, turned around and left, getting a bowl full of bandages with her as well.

The walk to the building wasn’t a long one, actually shorter than Lakai expected. Now she just has to sneak into the Lahan’s office, without her father noticing. She did hear something about him taking a vacation because of his wife. And she knew exactly why: it was around that time they will spend a week with just each other as a form of anniversary of when he bought her out. What a stupid tradition. On the other hand, she could enjoy her time without him constantly trying to abandon his work and be all over the medical office. The only issue was that she didn’t remember which way Lahan’s office was. She was there few times before to help him with some documents when she had time off and their father didn’t feel all too well. But she never tried to memorize the way, since there is always someone who can lead her. Unfortunately they finished with the surgery just before the lunch break and she came to the office when most people would be having that said lunch, which meant that there is little to no people in the office. And even less who could help her find her way.

Onsou surely should be somewhere around, but he’s most likely would be in father’s office specifically or somewhere with her brother. What a joke. She was just wandering the corridors now, hoping to find her way like that. Thankfully she saw a group of court ladies who were discussing someone in their circle. Perhaps they would know the way. Maomao approached one of the ladies from behind and was just going to tap on her shoulder, when their conversation reached her ear.

«Are you certain it’s strong enough to kill him? We need him dead for sure, there should be no way he stays alive.»

«Yes, it worked before, so why won’t now? Suirei used it on one of the officials and it worked perfectly.»

«Isn’t it just some seaweed? How can it kill someone?... What if he just refuces to eat it? The La’s can do something like that...»

Suirei?... Seaweed?... Poisoning?... That was something familiar, she did hear all of this before... That’s right! Originally Suirei was suspected and proved to be attached to the death of the official who liked rare foods and was poisoned through it. Are they going to do the same? What should she do? Should she interfire? Is it her place to speak?

«Those La’s are not capable of saying no to tasty food. We can just put it inside the bun and he would eat it!»

«I still don’t understand why we are doing this. So what if they are neutral, just let them be.»

«There should not be any neutral. What if they join opposite fraction? We will be crushed. If they don’t want to be with us, then they are against us, so we need to remove them. Now, help me put some of that in this bun.»

This was her place to speak. This was about her family and her clan. They just wanted to kill someone like that? They do know there will be an investigation, right? Should she just report it? There is no one around, everyone is on break, she knows it. What should she do? Try to deal with it herself? Is she even capable of that? Even if they will try to hide something, she still knows what they have. She just needs to scare them away from doing that and everyone will be fine. Her hand reached to one of the ladies shoulder and grabbed it with all the strenght she had, turning her around to face her.

«May I ask you who exactly are you going to poison with this?» Her lips curved into an evil smile as her face darkened. Her voice was loud enough so that each of them could hear her, but still quiet enough so that it doesn’t go all over the corridors. That shouldbe enough to scare them off, it always worked in the rear palace, so there is no way it won’t work now. Maybe it will work even better, since they are used to good treatment.

«How dare you grab me like that!» The lady escaped her grip and was holding her shoulder with her hand. She looked like she was in pain and mad at the same time. She angrily and offendetly stared at Maomao, who was still grinning evilly. Truly, how dared she , a mere servant girl, who works in the medical office, grab a noble lady like that. But in this building there was no “Maomao”, there was only “Lakai”, who was raised to not even bow to those, who were lower rank than her, which would be almost everyone here. There was no issue with her treating them like that. Well, wouldn’t be with her father and brother, but there definitely would be issues with how they treat her and what they were planning.

«Better tell me how dare you think about poisoning someone from the La clan, my clan. We should probably call the guards and report it to them. Or we could just part our ways if you–»

She wasn’t able to finish her sentence as the other lady took all the seaweed they had on them and shoved it into her mouth. Ladies pushed her against the wall, so she won’t be able to escape them. She immediately tried to cough the seaweed out, but instead they closed her mouth with their hands. The irritating feeling of poison was fantastic, it felt so nice, her whole body started to slowly heat up, tears forming in the corners of her eyes, legs felt unable to stand, and the feeling of being a bit sufficeted was also nice. But the feeling of the arms on her mouth and another hand on her hair, preventing her from falling. She was trying to remove arms at least from her mouth, but her hands were pretty weak and she couldn’t do much.

«Just swallow it. Once you will do it, we will let you go. So, go on, swallow it and you can be free from this world. Isn’t that nice?»

She had no choice, they won’t let her go unless someone shows up in the corridors, which is not happening anytime soon, the lunchtime is close to its end, but it’s rare that someone returns earlier. She should just do what they say, she can just vomit all of it when they let her go. She loves eating poisons and it’s literally the best part of her day, it made today so much better, but the dose that they shoved in her might be a little too much. She shouldn’t play with the dose of something she’s unsure about. It’s best to spit it and rinse her mouth. She can just act like she swallowed it. Harder, but much safer than vomiting after. Besides, she will have to vomit right here and there as she can’t really feel her legs. The situation is really bad. She has no choice but to vomit as soon as they let her go.

«Finally. Let her go.»

As soon as they heard the “gulp” sound, the arms one after another slowly left her mouth and stepped away from her. Only after that the arm on her hair finally let it free, resulting her to fall down on the ground on her knees. She was about to bring her two fingers and let them in her throat, so she would vomit, but instead she saw a face of an angry court lady, the same one that she gripped on the shoulder before. Her face was in hold, her cheeks squeezed in a grip, face hold up so she will only look her in the eyes. She was still so mad from that grip, seriously? It’s not like Maomao could see much, her eyes were wet from still slight pain from where her hair was held and around the mouth where it was closed by others’ hands, vision blurred because of the poison effect. That made that lady nervously smile.

«You look pathetic. Now you will learn your lesson, idiot. Hope you will enjoy your little afterlife, servant girl.»

Her face was finally let go after another chuckle. It hurt. Hurt a lot. The grip was a bit too tight, which made her jaw feel out of place for a second. She quickly rushed her fingers into her mouth, hoping that it will result into vomit. Fortunately, it did. She was vomiting on the floor, long, painfully. She couldn’t feel her body. The seaweed itself was poisonous, but they definitely added something on top, so it would work just like they hoped. How smart and cruel at the same time. They just watched her trying to vomit all the poison she had inside, frowning in disgust.

«How filthy. That’s really disgusting. Let’s leave till someone comes and sees us near this ugly creature.»

They turned around and started quickly walking away. Oh how she wishes she had her vomiting medicine with her. It always saved her the suffering of trying to cause vomiting through her throat with the fingers. Even if she didn't have it on her, usually there would be someone who can help her with it just by hitting her in the stomach. It would be really nice. She was vomiting for a couple of minutes and couldn't do it anymore. She knew there was still more inside, but her body was too heavy, she couldn't move at all, she felt hot as well. She tried to vomit once again, but with the poison there was also a bit of blood. Her vision was still blurred, but she could clearly see something red along green seaweed. Oh. That was really bad. But she didn't have time to panic. She couldn't feel anything. Everything was too blurry, too hot. She liked eating poisons, sure, but not when it was shoved in her mouth and it can easily kill her. She liked to enjoy it, not hate it. And that was exactly what was going on right now.

She could feel her chest closing with every breath. She cannot die here. Not like that. She should try her best to at least get closer to the entrance. She couldn’t remember where she came from though. Everything was hurting so much. Why doesn’t it feel exciting? Why does it feel so painfully? Why can’t she even se properly. When she opens her mouth to say something out loud, at least one sound, one scream, there is nothing. Her throat aches as she tries to even breath. And now she coughs out the seaweed, which was still stuck in and some blood as well. It’s so painful, she can’t feel anything at all. She tried to stand up, but her legs didn’t listen to her at all. Maybe if she will hold on the wall she will be able to do that? It would be really good, but wal wasn’t of much help, she just fell again. This time it was even more painful, she could feel every motion in her body, the clothes around were too tight, too hurting, they were feeling like they could kill her, instead of helping her feel better. How annoying. She tries to crawl instead, perhaps that way she can reach at least somewhere. And she does. She crawls just a couple more centimeters before a pair of hands grabs her and shakes her, then hugs. Oh. That feels warm and nice, not painful and hot like the clothes, or skin, or hair, or anything at all on her. This pair of hands is holding her so gently, making sure she’s comfortable. She tries to raise her arms to hug back and tries to shift a bit to see the owner of the arms. Unfortunately, her body betrayed her faster. Eyes were feeling too heavy, but the breath instead of hurting her chest now finally felt softer and calmer. She could finally close her eyes in someone’s embrace and fall asleep? Or just unconscious. Whatever was the case, she felt safe enough to do that.

«Busy with the surgery... How unfortunate... Then I would ask you to get everyone as far from mannequins as possible and put someone to watch over them. We will return there later when Maomao will be free. For now, let’s go to my office and go over something in the documents.»

Lahan was standing in the shadow next to the mannequins. There was nothing more with them, but there definetely was something in the documents. Didn’t that official, who runs around for him right now, specifically said that those mannequins cost less but better quality? That is already impossible, something of better quality cannot cost less, moreover be better and serve longer. He might not know much about money quality correlation, but his sister has always told him: “There is no way that something of better quality can cost less! They are either lying to you or it’s going to somehow break or damage, sometimes not only itself. So don’t buy cheap stuff that is said to be of better quality than something more expensive.”. He knew that very well. And the result of doing so was right in front of them and in the medical office, bothering his little sister.

That was not the interesting part, though. They actually needed more money than for those that were usually bought. Usually they would use three hundred silver on thirty mannequins. It was reasonable and the amount that would be enough each time. They rarely had to change them as they mostly served for a really long time, sometimes they were just worn out from constant hitting so they would buy some new. So what was the reason, that the “cheaper” mannequins actually costed more? There was only twenty of them, since it was a try-out amount to see how they would work with the soldiers, but they costed four hundred silver. That would be twice as much as they would pay if they got them from their usual place. Even if the price went up a little, they were still charging too much. So this seems to be the basic situation of corruption, but everything is not that easy. Why put others in possible danger? There is probably something more behind this. But he needs to show everything to his sister and ask for her opinion first.

Lahan walked slowly towards his office. He wished he could walk faster, there were too many people and too much work on his mind. It would be so much better if every single person, who was now walking and discussing the lunch, actually did their jobs, instead of slacking off, he wouldn't have to deal with this dumb investigation right now. Some passers-by would bow to him and greet him, but he just passed right through, trying to get to his office. Unfortunately, as he was trying to get out of the crowd, he received a bow from someone, who he couldn't ignore.

«Sir Lahan. It has been a long time since we met, hasn't it? Would you mind joining me for lunch?» His voice was smooth and his smile was bright. How annoying. Here he thought that he just had to get through this crowd and be free, but this man caught him off guard. He did hear from other officials that he started walking around the outer court and catching different high ranking officials and inviting them for tea. Pretty much like his father, but he actually had some work in the outer court, unlike this man. He was supposed to be by the Emperor’s side and help him, not walk around and catch officials off guard.

«Good day, Master Gyokuen. It was a long time indeed. As much as I would like to enjoy lunch in your company, unfortunately, I won't be having any. I am in the middle of the investigation process. There is suspicion of corruption, so we need to deal with it quickly. Every other day, of course.» Lahan politely bowed as well, trying to hide his irritation. That was the worst possible moment ever. He almost got back and now he is invited to lunch. He didn't want to share it with him. He wanted to keep it for later, when he would be finished with the investigation and have it with his sister. But no, that man just has to show up and try to steal it.

«Then isn't it perfect? I can help you a bit, while you will, at least, enjoy a cup of tea with me. I would love to also show you something. Please, just follow me. I insist.»

And now he was insisting. Crap. He just wanted to close in his office and work, not drink tea with him. This was really annoying. But what was it about having something to show? He knew how to get his attention. That was even more annoying. There was no way anyone would know about the ways to get his attention except for his family and Onsou with Rikuson, as he also worked quite closely with them, so they were able to learn his ways. But there is no way anyone told that man that. Whatever was the case, he should refuse politely. But if he insists... That was the issue, he's the father-in-law of the Emperor and the father of the Empress. It's not someone you can just say no to. Seems, there was no way out for him.

«Well...  Since you insist, I guess I have no way of refusing. Where shall we go then?»

«Of course! Just follow me, Sir Lahan. I’m sure we will have a great time together.»

Gyokuen turned around and started slowly walking away from the crowd. That was so unfair. He could’ve spent this time on much better things than trying to deal with someone so unpleasant. Was he wrong for thinking that? No, he isn’t doing or saying anything, just trying to keep on his polite smile. Lakai did put a lot of effort in trying to teach her brother how to do that, especially since the start of her relationship with the Moon Prince. She even managed to get him to personally teach Lahan how to smile even in the worst case scenario. Which was at the moment. How could anyone smile in such situation?

«Master Lahan... Should I follow you? I mean, it’s more of a personal matter, so perhaps I shouldn’t...»

He stopped and turned his body halfway back to be able to see the man’s face. What he was saying is the truth this was Lahan’s personal matter, he was invited for the tea. But he still needed someone to carry the documents for him, which was at the moment this man’s job. Besides, when Lakai finally shows up he will need to ask him to explain everything once again. And if he has to suffer, so should do this man. There was zero chance he would get a rest while Lahan has to suffer.

«I would much rather if you stayed by my side. I don’t have any of my usual attendants, so it would be quite helpful. Thank you.»

He doesn’t have any attendants. His attendants are his father’s aides, who leave his side to assist someone who does an actual job. Rikuson went so far as to go to the Western Capital with them that was definitely something. Rikuson in general spent most of his time near Lahan’s side, not his actual employer’s. He was most helpful as well. Perhaps if he never left then to help Gyoku-ou, Gyokuen’s son, his dealings in the capital would be faster and easier. Whatever. It would be actually nice if that gift of his was his dear Rikuson.

Finally, they reached a garden house, where some snacks and tea was already prepared. Someone was waiting inside as well. Lahan had to fix his glasses to take a proper look at the present person. It was a pretty tall man, he was wearing dark brown attire, his hair were half down and half up in a bun without a cloth over it. His face lit up for a second when he noticed them coming. Yes. Lahan knew this man. That was his favourite aid, the most helpful one, even Lakai agreed with it. He changed a bit, he looked exhausted, but still had an amazing nice smile on his face. That reminded him a lot of Rikuson in their first trip to the Western Capital, when he was helplessly trying to calm his sister down because she couldn’t get the chance to go to see the city.

«I promised that I have something to show you. I have your aid Rikuson returned to the capital all good and well. He was most helpful in the West, I will never be able to thank you enough. I wish I could have him for longer, but I cannot do this, can I?»

«Certanly, Master Gyokuen. I am glad he was able to help. I am glad to see you back in the capital, Rikuson. Perhaps you should take some days off, while father is at home? Once he is back, we will have a lot of work.»

Rikuson was standing slightly behind that old man and bowed respectfully. It had been so long since they saw each other. It felt pretty good to have his eyes on him again. He might not be perfect in terms of numbers, but he can forget about that at the moment, he can easily forget about that. So what if he's not perfect? He's still considered beautiful, even the Moon Prince saw a slight competition in him in terms of who will get his sister's hand in marriage at one point. It was enough for Lahan. Rikuson was more than enough for Lahan to have his eyes on him everyday. As an aid, of course.

«It’s good to see you after such a long time, Master Lahan. It had been almost two years since we last met, right? Seems you didn't change a bit. I would like to remain working for now. Serving you is the greatest honour to me.»

His smile was pure perfection. How nice it was to see it again and to feel bits of warmth from him. Perhaps he was also happy to be back and to be working with Lahan. Hopefully, since there is a lot of work. Rikuson made a couple of steps towards him, then turned around and bowed to Gyokuen, quickly after that rushing to stand behind his left hand, since on the right he had Lihaku.

«Well then. You should for sure enjoy at least one cup of tea with me and share something about that investigation of yours. Perhaps I will be able to help you.»

That’s right, that old man was still there. And it looked like he wasn’t going to leave him alone. Why should he share about the investigation anyway? He has to get somehow out of this. What if he says he has a meeting soon? No, the La’s are usually not invited. Maybe say that he has something urgent to attend to? Might not work as well. But what if he just says that he’s ill... If Lakai finds out how he lied to get out, she won’t be happy, but he doesn’t have a choice, he has to use this.

«I would more than love to... Unfortunately, I don’t feel really well... I would appreciate help, but maybe next time. There is nothing that I cannot do myself. I will never be able to show all my gratitude for returning me Rikuson and the invitation, but unfortunately we will have to leave.»

«Oh, I see. What a shame. Then next time, sure. Let me know in advance and we can have lunch together. Hopefully you will feel better soon. Have a good day, Sir Lahan.»

«Thank you. Have a good day, Master Gyokuen.»

Finally. Goodness, why keep a person for so long? All three younger men gave a bow and turned around to leave. Rikuson was walking closer to Lahan, while Lihaku was a bit behind them and carrying all the documents. Felt not well, sure. Worked actually pretty nice. It will also be nice if he doesn’t try to find his sister after. Gyokuen knows her, they met, he even knows her as “Kan Lakai”, because she decided to introduce herself like that on second banquet. Whatever would be the case, the best one if nothing happened. He can annoy any officials, but hopefully he will leave the doctors alone.

«You don’t trust Master Gyokuen? It’s not a simple matter of “leaving unpleasant situation”, you don’t want to let him know about anything, right?»

Rikuson knew him too well. Far too well. How can he hide anything, if his aid will point it out immediately? Maybe it was good that he was his aid and not someone else’s. He could only let an irritated smile disappear from his face as they walked back on the main road and were walking towards the La building.

«How can I trust someone, who was doing false taxes? Even if he put more than had, that is still messing with taxes. I cannot trust him with another case concerning money. Can you blame me?»

«Absolutely not, Master Lahan.»

He could hear a chuckle in his voice. How could he laugh at this moment? Usually he would be more reserved. Has something happened in the Western Capital that changed him so much? Maybe. His sister was also a bit different after it, considering that she finally accepted her feelings to the Moon Prince. But that wasn't the most important thing. Rikuson was definitely more serious and more reserved before he left for the West. Even his sister was always pointing that out. Maybe he should ask her later what happened in the year that she was there. She might not know much, but it's better than to ask Rikuson himself.

They continued to walk to the building in silence, down the empty streets. There were some officials here and then but much less than usual. Well, it was lunchtime after all, everyone was eating and hiding from more work. He couldn't blame them, he would also be eating, if his sister was there. But she was busy in the medical office. Maybe when she finally comes, he can ask for her favourite dishes to make her feel better. Or maybe snacks would be better, since she was performing a surgery. Maybe she would tell him how it went. Oh, there are so many possibilities of what could happen. While savoring all of them in his head, he didn't notice how they finally reached the building and walked inside. The first thing they hear? Someone falling down, loudly.

«I will go check, you stay here, Master Lahan, Sir Rikuson.»

How good was it to have a military official with him. However, something didn't feel right... He knows he should stay here, with Rikuson, as Lihaku passes him the papers. But something was making him go on the source of sound. What could’ve been dropped when no one is around? And what was that feeling that he just must run there? He was just walking fast, not hearing two other men chasing him and shouting to him. When he finally reached the counter, he turned and saw the worst picture he only saw in his nightnamers. His sister was struggling to move on the floor, nearby was vomit, perhaps hers, there were some drops of blood as well. Her hair is messy, looks like someone was holding her on it. Just who would dare to do such thing to her?!

He rushed to her side and quicklyb wrapped his arms around her, trying to bring her in a seated position. She felt cold, she didn’t feel hot or warm like she usually would, but cold. She was struggling to breath and tears were going down her face, her whole body was shaking. He couldn’t let her go. He just held her in his arms, rocking back and forth, hoping that she wouldn’t actually die. She just can’t. Not like that. She just started living the life she always wanted. He had to do something, but he doesn’t even know what to do. He could only whisper to her “Everything will be alright, Kai. I’m here. Your big brother is here. You will be safe and sound now, I promise”. No, she won’t live for sure if he doesn’t do anything. Rikuson and Lihaku were just staring down on him, in shock as well. Who wouldn’t be? A noble lady lying on the floor, all shaking, vomit with blood nearby. What a horryfing sight.

«Rikuson, prepare a room where she can be laid down. Lihaku, go and fetch me Doctor Kan specifically. If he can’t come, then whoever is available.»

«Yes, sir!»

Both men answered in unison. This was scary. Really scary. They left almost immediately, as Lahan continued to sit there on the floor, rocking his sister. She would never do this to herself, she knew when and where to eat poison. This was definetely an effect of poison, she did describe him a few times how poisoning might look like. And the scene that he was now part of, was the “worst case scenario” in her words. He couldn’t hear or see anything else besides his sister in his hands. She was slowly calming down, her breathing wasn’t as rapid and as struggling as before, but that only scared him. What if she dies just like that? She can’t, no, surely she can’t leave just like that.

«Lakai, please, don’t die. Please, Kaikai, don’t leave me. Stay with me. Your older brother is here, everything will be fine. Granduncle will come soon and you will be even better than before. Please, Kai, my dear little sister, please. Please breathe, please. Don’t die like that. Not like that, no. You cannot  die earlier than me, please. You have so much yet to achive, it cannot just end like this, please. Don’t leave.»

He was so focused on her he couldn’t feel his own tears on his cheeks. At this point he was whispering everything he knew how to say just hoping that it would help. His voice was shaking just like his body, he was shaking even more than his sister. He didn’t notice when there was a crowd around them. Someone tried to help him, but thankfully Rikuson came and make them step back. He could feel all their gazes but that wasn’t important. This was scary. Really scary. He could only see this in his nightmares and he would always run to her room after waking up from them, to check on her. She would always be peacefully sleeping or reading one of her medical books. If she wasn’t sleep, she would mock him for being scared and then read the book out loud as he came to her side, so that some knowledge would stuck to him. But this was not an awful dream, he won’t wake up and run to her room. She was right here in his arms, dying if he doesn’t do something, anything. Thankfully, a hand gently touched his shoulder, getting him out of the thoughts.

«Master Lahan, the room is ready. Let me carry Lady Lakai.»

It was Rikuson. As gentle as usual. He always had a soft spot for him and his sister, as in his words “you two are more bearable than your father”. He also had a soft spot for him, but the man didn’t have to know that. He knew it would probably better to let him carry his sister, but he can’t allow it. It was his sister and he himself has to take care of her. No matter how much he trusted others, it was his family, he cannot let others near her, especially when she’s like that.

«No! I will do it myself. It would be better if you wiped the vomit with something. But something clean, it might have a hint about what was it that caused her being poisoned.»

Rikuson only nodded. Lahan somehow stood up with his sister in his arms and slowly walked down the halls to the room. It felt like he was walking slowly, he wanted to walk slowly to not cause any discomfort for her. But his legs were faster than his wishes and mind, they were moving on their own, when they finally reached open room with a couch, chair near it, table and open windows. Couch had a few cushions and a blanket. Rikuson indeed did a great job in preparing the room. He quickly rashed to the couch and carefully placed his sister on it, with care, so her head will be comfortable on the cushions and the neck won’t hurt after. Then he wrapped her in blanket and took one of her arms, sitting on the chair right beside thee couch. Her hand felt both cold and hot at the same time. He was trying desperately to feel the pulse. It was there, really light, but it was. That was a good news. Her breathing was also much calmer, much slower, much quieter, but it was present, which was already a good sign.

«Lahan, let me take care of her. You should wipe your face and clean your glasses, they are all wet.»

A gentle hand was on his shoulder. He raised his head to the voice to be met with a caring gaze of their Granduncle. He was there. He came to save his sister. She will live. She won’t die today, thankfully. She will live and laugh next to him. He let go of her hand, which was immediately caught by their old man, who was now sitting on another chair, which was closer to the bed and fully turned to it, while his was positioned so you would sit diagonally to the couch. He took off his glasses and placed them on his knees. He wanted to reach in his robes for the cloth for them, but instead his palms covered his face as the tears once again run down his face.

He knows she will live. She has the best doctor attending to her, one that they can trust as well. Everything will be fine, he just has to wait for a bit and his sister will be back. She won’t leave him just like that, she’s not evil enough to do that. But how did she even get poisoned? Did someone just put the poison in her mouth? It could be, since her hair looked like it was tucked on. His poor little sister. She shouldn’t have gone through this pain. He will have to find whoever did it and make them pay. But for now, he has to calm down. He was still sobbing as he straightened his back and took the cloth for glasses out of his robes, wiping wet from them. It felt somewhat relaxing. It was helping him calm down, as his eyes were closed and the hands were doing the known motion over and over again.

«It’s just a case of poisoning. I will give you the medicine to give her, when you will get her to better place to stay than this couch. It’s not good enough for a sick unconscious person. There also will be something to give her when she wakes up. I would love to stay and take care of her myself, but doctor Li is off work today, so I need to take care of all the young. I will be able to stay by her side tomorrow probably, though. If you have nothing against it, Lahan.»

An old hand was now patting his head. It felt nice, reassuring. Everything will be fine. That’s right, his sister has a high poison tollerance, she won’t die from it. She’s too familiar with poisons to die from one. He finally opened his eyes and looked up, trying to put his glasses on. But instead he felt wiping feeling of a handkerchief on his cheeks. Granduncle was looking down on him with the most care in the world and then gently patted him again, as he hid the handkerchief in his robes. Finally, he managed to put on glasses and nod.

«Will do. Thankfully we have a residence inside the palace as well. And thankfully Lakai has a room there as well. Thank you, Granduncle. I will be waiting for you tomorrow.»

Lahan urged himself from stand up from the chair and bow to his uncle, only to receive another pat. He was getting really a lot of pats today from his Granduncle, which could not be not good. It was a nice feeling, especially in this situation. He looked at his sister and his face darkened again, trying to hold back tears.

«She will live, right? She can’t die just like that... Right?»

«If she gets the best treatment, she will be even better than before. Thankfully, she has a caring older brother who will ensure that she gets only the best. I will return to the medical office now, if you would.»

The room was dark. The light of a candle was the only bright thing there. At the table sat a young man, looking through tons of documents and holding his head with one of his hands, while the other was changing the documents on the table. He looked a bit too tired, as if he's going to fall asleep at any moment. His hand reached for the cup on the edge of the table and he brought it to his lips. He emptied it in one sitting and placed the cup back on the same place. He was exhaling nervously, something was definitely wrong with him, but he just couldn't tell what. He could only lean on the back of a chair and look up at the ceiling.

«Master Lahan, I'm finished. Should I prepare a bath for you?»

A familiar female voice filled big empty room. He turned his head around and was met with a not tall enough for a man, but too tall for a woman person, they were dressed in the male clothes and bowing slightly to him. They were standing next to the bed, which had its fancy curtains down. That’s right. He was in the La residence inside the palace, where they decided it would be best for Lakai to stay. Lahan couldn’t take days off, especially as they were in the middle of the two investigations now: one harder than the other. His sister was fed just like their Granduncle had written down for him to do, changed into better clotches, wiped from any dirt there could be on her, hair brushed and taken care of. Now she just had to get some rest and she will be even better than before. Just like the doctor said. He needs to find who made her drink something like that. What if she wasn’t found as early as she was? What if something worse had happened? He needs to distract himself. A bath should be really good right now, just what he needs at a moment like this.

«Yes... The bath would be nice... I will entrust you with it then, please. And maybe a change of clothes would be nice as well... »

«Will do.»

They walked out of the room, leaving him alone with his sister. Lahan couldn’t help but stand up and slowly walk towards the bed. He was tired, exhausted, figuring out all day what have happened and what lead to this. The corruption could wait, who cares about it when there is a case of the poisoning. How did they get their hands on that poison? Why did they have it with them? Did they plan to poison her all along? Was victim someone else and she just was in the wrong place at the wrong time? So many questions and so few answers. Somehow Rikuson managed to catch at least one of the ladies that has something to do with it, but she keeps her mouth shut. However, she had the same seaweed on her that his poor sister ate. It might be a coincidence, but she was still locked for further investigation.

His arms reached to the curtain and opened them themselves. He carefully tied them up, so they wouldn’t fall down on him and sat on the floor, laying down his head on the bed with his arm to serve as a pillow. He could hear her breathing. Yes, it was really quiet and rather slow, but she was not dead. She was pretty much alive. And that was the good news. When she wakes up, he will make sure to give her everything she would ask for, no matter what it would be. Even if she asks for the whole empire under her feet – he would do that. Just because she asked for it. If she asks for that prince to leave her alone, he will find a way to do that. If she says that she wants to marry him, he will do everything in his power to make that happen. He's her older brother after all, that's his duty to make everything happen, even if it sounds like something that is impossible.

«Master Lahan, the bath is ready! Master Lahan?...»

Sanfan walked into the room, trying to see anything in the dark. Thankfully, her search didn't take long. Here he was, sitting next to the bed with his eyes closed. The bath won't be needed today, after all. She should just clean the documents a bit on the table and blow out the candle.

Her whole body was aching. It felt like she was crushed thousands of times and is being crushed once again. She couldn't feel anything except for the pain in her muscles. She slowly opened her eyes, only to be met with a high dark brown ceiling. That is certainly not her room in the La residence and not somewhere in the dormitory. There were used light wood, so why is the ceiling here dark? Her throat felt too dry, eyes hurt from all the crying before she went unconscious. What have even happened? Why was she here? She tried to slightly move her head and saw a familiar face near her bed. Lahan. He was sleeping, but in a very weird position. Why was he here? Where are they? What has happened? Should she try to scream? But before she could do anything, a woman in the dark green hanfu walked in.

«My lady! You are awake! Goodness! Stay in bed, I'm coming!»

Sanfan... It was so good to see another familiar person here. Maybe she was just in a different room? That could easily be the case, there are more than one room in their mansion and she doesn't know all of them, so it can easily be the case. But the structure of the room didn't resemble their mansion at all... She wanted to speak, but her throat was too dry for even a slight sound, let alone words. Thankfully, Sanfan rushed to her side with a cup of warm tea. How thoughtful. She placed the cup on a small table near the bed, where also was a bowl with water and a cloth, some herbs and medicines. Must have been used for hee treatment. Her ladies-in-waiting hands were now positioning her in a seated position and then she helped her empty the cup.

The warmth spread in her body. A nice feeling of drinking something so tasty it's to die for. Her throat no longer felt dry, but her whole body was still stiff. She couldn't lift a limb in her body and had to lean on the bed frame and pillows with her back fully. The maximum she managed to do was to place one of her hands on her brother's head, who was still asleep.

«What happened?... And where are we?...»

Her voice was really bad. She could barely hear herself, it wouldn't be surprising if Sanfan hasn't heard her as well. But she did, somehow. Even if she was standing pretty far to hear anything properly. She was rushing to her side again, this time having a bowl with the rice water inside and a spoon. Oh, that's not really nice, but what could she do? She was in a really bad state, she knew it's the best and what they should do, but she couldn't help not being satisfied with her first meal of the day.

«Master Lahan said that you were poisoned. They caught a suspect in it, but she keeps her mouth shut, so they are trying to figure something out. You shouldn't worry yourself with it. Please, don't be like Master Lahan. My lady, you need rest and a long time to recover. Doctor Kan said that it would be best to stay in bed for the meantime. Should I wake Master Lahan up?»

Sanfan was truly made to serve her. Yes, Miss Chue was also nice to have around, she was fun and active, something Maomao needed to actually look like a person, but Sanfan was more of what was just perfect. She could hear her even when she was whispering, could easily understand her emotions and wishes, and learned everything about her pretty fast. She was just pure perfection. She also knew how to behave best and would never overstep. Except for that one time when she was trying to kick En’en and Yao out. But whatever. She can excuse her that one accident. She shook her head in disagreement when Sanfan mentioned waking Lahan up. If he wakes up, he will ask too many questions, do too many things, panicking. She's sure he was the one who found her and who gave her that warm feeling that she felt before losing consciousness. He should have some rest instead, right here next to her, while her fingers, which movements do not send pain through her whole body. His hair was as usual soft and perfectly clean, just like it should be. Maybe she could suffer through that rice water for a few times, if Han will be as calm as he is right now.
