Work Text:
Cake was humming at the kitchen counter while stretching her arms all over to fetch butter, milk, and eggs from the fridge and flour, sugar, and baking soda from the pantry.
Heavy but slow steps and a pitched yawn sound behind Cake as she's holding a large metal bowl quickly mixing portioned ingredients together.
"What's up, pumpkin!" The cat says warmly with spring in her tone. She turns to see Fionna slouching as she sits at the table behind her with her chin propped on it and arms outstretched resting on the wood as her hands tap at the wood.
Fionna sighs exaggeratedly, her hair was messy.
"Meh-" Fionna sticks out her tongue a bit and blows a raspberry at Cake who laughs but continues pouring batter into her skillet as she mans the stove.
"Aww... what's the matter baby? Teen girl blues got you in your feels?" Cake asks softly tilting her head at Fionna as she sets the table with plates and utensils for the two of them and Bmo.
"No... It's just it's been weeks since Flame Prince has wanted to hang out again." Fionna whines as Cake sets down three glass cups and fills Fionna's with orange juice.
"Don't worry about it, you worry baby!" Bmo beams as he sits on the opposite side of the table, smiling cheerfully.
"Hah! Yeah what Bmo said, sometimes things don't work out. People are busy, they have family and personal stuff that needs to be tended too-" Cake stretches an arm to the skillet handle with an oven mitt and uses a spatula to dish out stacks of flapjacks on all of their plates.
"But that doesn't mean they've forgotten you, you know?"
"Yeah...." Fionna huffs as she looks down at the heart-shaped cakes on her plate it did get a smile to come on her face.
"There we go! I know my cooking get's you feeling right-" Cake says munching on a mouth full of pancake, shoveling more into her mouth with a fork.
"Thanks cake-" Fionna pours maple syrup on her stack of cakes and gets busy eating. Cake's cooking always hit the spot.
It was a comfortable silence as they ate, a slow but nice morning.
Bemo made a curious sound as they stopped eating, deep in though with maple syrup all over their green hands and screen. Bemo looked to Cake who offered the little robot a napkin with a smile.
"About Fionna being a worry baby- what was baby Fionna like?" Bmo inquired to her.
"Takes me back- hm......" Cake looks up at the ceiling and then back to Fionna who was messily eating her stack of pancakes.
"Biiig cry baby more than Me or Germaine..... at least from what my parents said-"
"Hey! I am a strong warrior!" Fionna slams a fist into the table, puffing her cheeks out and exhaling sharply.
"-When they found her on a boom boom leaf-Hah!" Cake chuckles a little as she thinks some more.
Cake turns to Bmo and adds, "She loved to do silly dances and sing alot-always in the bathroom I dont know." Cake giggled with Bmo.
"Always loved swords! Would pick up anything and bop me a new one if I wasn't looking-" Cake patted Fionna's head as she reminisced.
"Overall, Fionna was a fat cutie with a love for fighting and food-"
Bmo was touching his little screen with both hands laughing while kicking his feet in his tall chair.
"I'M NOT NO BABY NO MORE!" Fionna punches a fist up boastfully.
"I'M A WOMAN!" Fionna sets her arm down and goes still for a moment, it goes unnoticed by Bmo and Cake who continue chatting.
It left her feeling unsettled. It isn't the first time she's felt this way.
Fionna always pushes it down but the last word keeps repeating in her mind.
It's kind of scary how confusing it's leaving her.
She's pushing around the bits of pancake and maple syrup on her plate with a fork, thinking up a mess. Her brows knit and her features turn tense.
Cake laughs as Bmo runs from the table in a hurry, something about a football and scurries to the bathroom. Cake turns to Fionna and her expression turned concerned.
"Hey.... you alright?" Cake rubs her shoulder.
"You think you're down for a haircut talk out?" Cake cheerfully asks.
Fionna tensely nods.
Now in the bathroom with hands and face freshly washed off of any sticky food particles. Fionna was on a stool hands gripping the wood edge of the chair between her legs. Sitting in front of the sink and mirror with a large cloth tied around her neck covering her entire upper body.
Cake stretched her limbs to stand a litter taller than Fionna and morphed her hands into a comb and scissors. She pulled off Fionna's bunny cap and blonde shoulder-length hair came spilling out as she set the cap on the sink.
"We haven't done this in forever- Like years ago man, I was barely out of diapers." Fionna chuckled dryly.
"Tradition never fails in this case pumpkin, haircut therapy used to always do the trick when you were blue-" Cake spoke eagerly as she combed a part in Fionna's hair.
"So what can I do you for little lady?" Cake asked in a spunky tone as she combed the human's hair out in sections.
Fionna internally flinched at the last word but ignored it. "A little off the bottom-" Fionna sighs as she reluctantly relaxes into the combing.
"You've been coming to my shop for over a decade dear, I can feel the tension in your brow and neck. What's buggin your beans babe?"
"Haaa......." Fionna sighs, collecting words to say something that made sense.
"It doesn't make sense......at least to me...."
Cake hums in response as she brushed a portion of hair and uses her hand-morphed scissors to fake cut the strands.
"I don't know why I lose it over this......." Fionna exhales and kicks her feet in the chair a bit. "Well for starters.... when peps use girl nicknames for me it makes me feel off.........." Fionna expression donning a frustruated look as she fiddles with her fingers under the cloth. "Ugh It doesn't make any sense!.............talking science biz n stuff, peps are boys or girls-"
"Oh Finny, Sorry to cut you off but Lemme set you something straight-"
Cake adds as she finished combing and cutting one half of Fionna's hair and started on the other half.
"Nothing in life is just one thing cut and dry- Life is a colorwheel! Biologne or something yo!"
"Cake, come on! This is serious biz!" Fionna huffs.
Cake combs another section of hair and nods knowingly.
"Okay okay,- lemme break down for you-" Cake clears her throat for a second, "I had a girlfriend in the past-"
"WOW- Cake this is major tea! You never told me!-" Fionna gushed.
"Now- you never asked-" Cake laughed. "But, she wasn't always a she when we dated- sometime in the middle of seeing eachother he turned to she and I was cool with it, changed her name too, she was a punky horse with passion for baking-" Cake recalled warmly.
"But not all peps understand it. But it was an experience that helped me understand people more."
Fionna smiled and nodded knowingly.
"Soooooooo........... how do you feel now?" Cake finished the cut and showed Fionna through a handheld mirror.
"Better-" Fionna smiled.
Fionna contemplated kicking her feet as she stared at the floor.
"I just don't feel like a girl..... but I guess that's okay...." Fionna adds.
"Any changes you want to make!" Cake comments resting her chin on Fionna's head.
"You know how we don't know if Bmo is a girl or boy, I think that fits me."
Fionna straps their bunny cap back on over their combed hair.
"I like my name, so I'll keep it-"
Fionna turned to cake with a curious look.
"But you had a girlfriend! What was she like back then! What were you like back then!" Fionna switched spots with Cake on the chair, retying the cloth around Cake's neck and using thier fingers as fake scissors.
"Oh boy- I'll spare the details because I was not a good cat back then. Leather jackets, black boots, and pants, a hooligan I tells yuh. She was a punky lady but a goody two shoes-" Cake laughs. "She was a horse I knew-" She adds. "But I pulled her into the wrong crowds one thing led to another she broke up with me to see better people." Cake recalled longingly. "But It was for the best, it helped me grow up, plus I have my lovely spicey man now- my monochromicorn~" Cake gushed.
"Cake gimme more details this is important!~" Fionna whined as they combed Cake's hair.
"No way, It'll taint my image as your older sister!" Cake huffs and crosses her arms over her chest.
They spent the rest of the afternoon chatting about Cake's past, Bmo was sitting in the bathtub playing with a rubber duck.
