Work Text:
Subspace slowly woke up from his sleep, grumbling lowly as he got up from his position, wanting to get ready for his day of work. However, he had quickly realised that something was...off.
Looking around him everything was blurry, no matter how much he tried to focus. Not only that, but his eye also hurt terribly. Was he... going blind? He did have issues reading things and seeing small details as of late but it was never this bad so he brushed it off as just feeling tired and burnt out, but this certainly wasn't normal, not anymore. Was his rot really deteriorating his physical health this badly in such a short amount of time?
He tried to get up from the bed, only to end up tripping due to the slippers clumsily left on the floor next to it last night. After carefully getting up, Subspace proceeded to make his way towards his desk, over which a mirror hung up. Trying to look into it, he couldn't really make out wether or not his rot has spread to the rest of his face, having the pink and white on his skin blur into eachother instead. Since he was already there, he desperately reached out to whatever he had on his desk, hoping to find his painkillers, which thankfully he had managed to do.
After having taken them Subspace went back to his bed, hoping that he will be relieved from the pain he woke up to. However, as he waited, there was a thought that he could not ignore: was this all his fault? Afterall, it was him who has caused the incident between him and Medkit. Could things have gone any differently? That day of the disaster, the blinding rage he felt, the sensation of an eye held by his hand, the burning pain spreading on his face and arm... It was all a mistake. He should have never done it. Sure, Medkit did threaten to leave Blackrock, which is the reason why Subspace even lashed out at all, but the outcome has proven to not be worth it. Even after him and Medkit managed to reconcile and become partners, he has never truly stopped feeling guilty for it. Starting to feel panicked, both by his apparent blindness and his awfully loud thoughts he scrambled off the bed yet again to call Medkit. Thankfully, it didn't take long for the phone to get picked up.
"Hello. What is it Subspace? You haven't called me as early as this before." Medkit inquired, somewhat confused.
"MEDKIT!!! I need your help pplease... I can't see well anymore... and m-my eye hurts.."
"I'll be right there soon. Stay calm." he spoke, trying to calm down the panicked Subspace as he hung up the phone to get ready.
Just as Medkit promised, he got to Subspace's residence as fast as he could. Using the spare key the other had entrusted him with he opened the door and quickly began to make his way into his partner's bedroom. And there he was, sitting up in bed, rocking back and forth with a distraught look on his face.
He made his way towards the bed, sitting down calmly as to not disturb Subspace. He slowly wrapped his arms around him, hoping to make the other less panicked and moved his hair away from his face.
"Hello there, dear. May I have a close look at your eye?" he asked quietly.
After being given permission by a slight nod, he tilted Subspace's head and began to look for what could have gone wrong. By the looks of it, things looked.. bad. The rot has begun to make its way onto the once healthy side of his face, his eye being a clear victim of that, his pupil all cloudy. Medkit tried to ask Subspace to count the fingers that he held up, only for the other to start crying as he couldn't make out a proper answer. To that, all Medkit could do was go in for yet another hug, trying to calm down the scientist as much as he could.
"...Medkit? Am i going to die soon? This blindness cannot be a good sign, not to mention my body is just as rotten as ever..." he whispered after a while.
"I dont know. But even if you will, i will be here for you, in every step that you make, up until the very day you die. I will try my best to guide you and alleviate you of your pains, especially now."
"I.. I love you Medkit.. I'm sorry... for everything I've done."
"It's okay Subspace. What happened back then has been long gone. What matters now is the present and only it. I love you too, no matter what will happen. I will not abandon you again."
And as such the two of them have stayed on the bed, embracing eachother in the quiet of the room. Subspace trusted Medkit in his words, and while still feeling guilty about the past he did his best to focus on the present, on their closeness, just as Medkit has told him. The couple has then planned to navigate any of the hardships they will continue to encounter, making sure that both of them will be comfortable and as happy as they can be, given the multitude of situations that are about to follow, especially with the new gradual loss of vision. They have eachother, and thats all they will ever need.
